• How do I download a corrupted package again?

  Ubuntu 12.04 can't install Firefox 13 update, because the package is corrupted. While attempting to install, returns this error (I translated it from my language to English). /var/cache/apt/archives/firefox_13.0+build1-0ubuntu0.12.04.1_i386.deb W: Waited for dpkg --assert-multi-arch but was not there - dpkgGo (10: There are no "child" processes). I can tell that the package at /var/cache/apt/archives/firefox_13.0+build1-0ubuntu0.12.04.1_i386.deb is corrupted, but even as admin, I can't delete it in order to be downloaded again.   What are some famous programs or video games that were written in the following languages? C C++ Java Python I'm asking this particularly so I know how powerful impact did those languages have on our lives. I believe Windows was also written in C/C++ but I'm not sure if fully. Also if you are kind enough you can mention some other language impacts besides programs/video games. These languages are by far the most common so that's why I've picked them. Besides the impact on our lives I'd also like to see the power these languages have. I'm studying programming and I've learned bits of all those languages and I think if I knew some famous examples of programs written in those languages I could understand the power of them, as well as inspire me further in my career.

• Collision: Vector class (java)

  When handling collision detection / response and you need a Vector class, do you need to create that class yourself or is there a java class you can use? A vector class should have methods like: subtract(Vector v), normalize(), dotProduct(Vector v), ... At the moment it seems logical to use classes like java.awt.Rectangle and java.awt.Polygon to calculate collisions. Would I be right to use these classes for this purpose? My question is not about how to implement collision detection, I know how that works. However I'm wondering what would be a correct and clean way to implement it in java since I'm fairly new to the language and to application development in general.

• Legality of using/embedding MP3s?

  I am working on a language learning startup. I think that one of the best ways to study is through music. For that purpose I would like to include MP3s on the website, together with related study tools such as appropriate lyrics. Because I want to avoid dead links I would like to host the MP3s directly on my server and stream them to the users. Doing this isn't exactly legal since everyone could download the MP3s. But what if, before accessing a specific song, I displayed a message asking "Do you legally own this song in CD/MP3/... format?" and only if the user clicks "yes" he is allowed to continue and listen. Isn't this how, for example, YouTube gets around legal problems? Does anybody have insight on this? Thank you!

• Where can I find good (well organized) examples of game code?

  Where can I find good (well organized) examples of game code? I'm hoping that I can pick up some organizational tips. Most examples in books are too short and leave out lots of detail for the sake of brevity. I'm particularly interested on how to group your variables and methods so that another programmer would know where to look in the code. For example initializers at the top, then methods that take input, then methods that update views. I don't care about a particular language, as long as its OOP. I looked at the Quake 2 and 3 sources, but they're straight C and not much help for getting tips on organizing your objects. So, have you seen some good source? Any pointers to code that makes you say "wow, that's well organized" would be great.

  I didn't get an answer but I wasn't doing anything and this is an interesting topic. In Ubuntu 12.04, opening a file in gedit or I am working on the command line, in dpkg, I get returned the error "locale not supported, falling back to default "C" libraries", and the one below, Gtk-WARNING **: Locale not supported by C library. Using the fallback 'C' locale. The locales were not set correctly, and locale LANG and LANGUAGE were the culprits. I picked my way through this. The answer, correct below.

  I never learnt anything about VB6 (and I dont want to) but I wanted to search for bad things in computer software, so my first though was VB6. So for example, VB6 was strongly typed with late binding. Makes some sense to have a language with that combination? (I dont think so). • game engine done, ideas missing

  I read at many places how people have this GREAT ideas but are not able to program themselves. I have quite the opposite problem. I have developed game engine, level editor, embedded Lua scripting language, I have even made wrapper for Android and it all works well. But I have no good idea about how to proceed with actual levels; I have no good ideas. The engine itself is very generic and can be used in many game concepts, but I just cannot think of anything useful. Do you have any thoughts on how to proceed? Where should I seek ideas? Who should I ask? I am sorry if this question is a duplicate.

  I'm still pretty new to game programming and any tutorial that I have worked with stuck to only games with the initial screen. I want to start creating my own games but there are a few things that I still need to learn. One of them is how to create a game that side-scrolls. For example; Mario... Or ANY type of game like that... Can anyone give me a small example to create something like that. I'm not asking for any specific language because currently in school I am learning javascript but I know some c++/java/processing/objective-c as well. So any of those languages would be fine and I could probably implement it in any of the others... In fact, it seems that client-side Java (applets, desktop applications, ...) is dying completely, and Java is primarily becoming a server-side language. Except for the sake of compatibility, is there any place where applets are still useful on today's web? As a web developer who is familiar with Java and with JavaScript, why would I ever choose to use an applet instead of some JavaScript?

• Shifting from XNA/C# to C++?

  For a while now, I've been working with XNA for game design and development (although only for personal use ATM.) Overall, I'm a major fan of XNA itself, and it's overall "feel." However, due to the fact that: XNA seems to have a lack of support (no Metro support, no updates since 2010, etc.) I plan to try and get a job in the game development industry, and due to C++'s dominance, being more familiar with it would be very useful XNA only supports Windows (non-Metro) and Xbox 360, while I am interested in Mac and (to a lesser extent) Linux support. I've been trying to shift over to C++ as my main language. However, I do not want to focus on learning raw DirectX/C++ at this time, so I've been looking for a higher level C++ API (something about the same level as XNA, although something a bit more low-level would be fine) with a feel similar to XNA. So, for someone switching from C#/XNA to C++, what would my best choice(s) be for API's similar to XNA, although unmanaged and running on C++?

  I have a friend who has the specific problem of building a case against the use of a custom HTML <wrapper> tag in some site's markup. Now, intuitively we can answer that use of such a tag is risky, as future HTML specs may define a wrapper tag with semantics that conflict with its use on the site. We can also appeal to a particular section of the HTML5 spec which also recommends against the use of custom tags for this reason. And while I agree with the conclusion, I find these arguments a little on the weak side, on their own. Is there some well grounded and proven theory in computer science from which we can derive this conclusion? Have programming language theorists created proofs about the properties of vocabulary versioning, or some such thing?

• Should I continue to learn and program using ansi c or non standard? [closed]

  I am a Cs Student, enthusiastic about programming. C is my first programming language that I learned. (Never been exposed to programming, data structures, algorithms before) I failed the exam because I studied on my own and didn't know how to use windows non standard libraries like conio.h. (I had to draw circles, etc using get x and get y). I told them but they just don't care. What do I do because for a beginner this is very confusing? Do I continue to study ansi c on my own, or should I study non standard c? Should I do them in parallel? *I did use the search bar but found nothing useful that could help me.

  I am learning from The C++ Primer. One of the exercises is to compile a program with arguments in main(). For this I am trying to use mac terminal. I need to compile a C++11 Unix executable file named "main" which takes “f" as an argument. I am using Xcode 4.6.3 on OS X Lion. I compiled the program with clang++ -std=c++11 -stdlib=libc++ main.cpp -o main. But don’t know what to do next. I found -frecord-gcc-switches while searching compiler options on google. It does what I need to do. Is there a clang version of this? Please use simple language. I have never used command line before. I tried going through the clang user guide but a lot of it is out of my depth.

• What's the reason exceptions are heavily used in managed (C# and Java) languages but not in C++? [on hold]

  AFAIK, a lot of C++ projects don't allow exceptions and deny them in coding guidelines. I have a lot of reasons, for example, exception is hard to handle correctly if your binary needs to be compiled by separate and different compilers. But it doesn't fully convince me, there is a lot of projects which are just using one compiler. Compared to C++, exceptions are heavily used in C# and Java and the reason can only be that exception are not bringing enough benefit. One point is debugbility in practice. Exception can not get the call stack in C++ code, but in C# and Java you can get the call stack from exception, it is significant and makes debugging easier. No-callstack is not the fault of the exception, it is the language difference, but it impacts the exception usage. So what's the reason that exceptions are frowned upon in c++ programs?
