• Get user-inputed file name from JFileChooser Save dialog box

  This answer to this question may seem obvious, but I'm actually struggling with it quite a bit. I've searched through JFileChooser methods in the API, and I've looked at some of the questions already asked and answered here on stackoverflow. My question is this. In my program, I am to allow the user to type in a file name which I will then use to create a brand new file that I will write on. How do you get the text the user has entered in the textfield next to the label "Save As:" on the Save dialog box provided by JFileChooser? Is there a JFileChooser method that would allow me to get that user-inputed text? Or would I have to go through another class, or do something else to get that text? Thank you so much, to anyone who answers. It's very late for me now, and this program is due in a few hours (meaning I'll be having another sleepless night). Desperate may be too strong a word, but I'm something close enough.

• How to implement an override method in IronPython

  I'm trying to implement a WPF control in IronPython and I'm having trouble implemented the override methods. The code below fails with this error: TypeError: expected int, got instancemethod. If I rename the VisualChildrenCount method, the exception is not raised anymore, but the control doesn't work. • JLabel with separate text and icon background colours

  Hey, I have a simple Jlabel element with text and icon setting the background changes the full label colour. I want to be able to only render the background colour on the text section of the label, ie - to have separate backgrounds/foregrounds for the icon and text. Selecting/deselecting the label will flip the colour behind the icon and text. Is this possible to do this by just extending JLabel, and if so which methods should i be looking to customise? My alternative idea is to create a panel with two separate label elements, one with an icon the other with text. It seems a bit messy, and before i start i'm wondering is there a smarter way of achieving this with Swing.

  Hi, I just read that C99 has double_t which should be at least wide as double. Does this imply that it gives more precision digits after the decimal place? More than the usual 15 digits for double?. Secondly, how to use it: Is only including #include enough? I read that one has to set the FLT_EVAL_METHOD to 2 for long double. How to do this? As I work with numerical methods, I would like maximum precision without using an arbitrary precision library. Thanks a lot...

• iPhone - Bug using CADisplayLink and UIControls - bad to mix openGL and UIControls?

  Having had problems using other methods, I've decided to stick with CADisplayLink to run my game loop. The animation is smooth now, but sometimes there's a problem where the buttons and other UI elements can't be used, can't be accessed by touch or changed programmatically. This includes UIButtons and UILabels. Has anyone encountered this before? Is it not a good idea in general to use interface builder and uicontrols on top of an OpenGL view? I've heard they don't play well together but haven't heard the reasons. Thanks!

• Boiler plate code replacement - is there anything bad about this code?

As far as I can tell, they work ok, but I need some reassurance/advice on whether there are some problems I might be missing. • Joda-Time: Period to string

  I'm using the Joda-Time library with Java. I'm having some difficulty trying to turn a Period object to a string in the format of "x days, x hours, x minutes". These Period objects are first created by adding an amount of seconds to them (they are serialized to XML as seconds and then recreated from them). If I simply use the getHours() etc. methods in them, all I get is zero and the total amount of seconds with getSeconds. How can I make Joda calculate the seconds into the respective fields, like days, hours, etc...?

• Howto specify format of Restlet-response in browser?

  Hello everybody, i've started to introduce myself into REST. I use as REST-framework Restlet. I have defined a resource with methods for the GET with several response formats like @Get("xml") @Get("json") I now want to test my defined response-formats with my browser, but I don't know which parameter I have to specify in my URL to get the format. Something like: http://localhost:8182/members?type=xml I've tried some param-names, but I couldn't find the right param-name. I know that there must be such a parameter, because I've seen it already in an URL, but i forgot the name and couldn't find it in the net. How is the name of this parameter when using restlet? I would be pleased, if somebody can help me, thanks, Martin

• Circular Dependency Solution

  Our current project has ran into a circular dependency issue. Our business logic assembly is using classes and static methods from our SharedLibrary assembly. The SharedLibrary contains a whole bunch of helper functions, such as a SQL Reader class, Enumerators, Global Variables, Error Handling, Logging and Validation. The SharedLibrary needs access to the Business objects, but the Business objects need access to SharedLibrary. The old developers solved this obvious code smell by replicating the functionality of the business objects in the shared library (very anti-DRY). I've spent a day now trying to read about my options to solve this but i'm hitting a dead end. I'm open to the idea of architecture redesign, but only as a last resort. So how can i have a Shared Helper Library which can access the business objects, with the business objects still accessing the Shared Helper Library?

• rdoc and the "--accessor" option

  rdoc --help says: --accessor, -A accessorname[,..] comma separated list of additional class methods that should be treated like 'attr_reader' and friends. Option may be repeated. Each accessorname may have '=text' appended, in which case that text appears where the r/w/rw appears for normal accessors. Does anyone have any working examples of doing this (both the accessor method definition and the rdoc command invocation)? No matter what combination I try, my accessors will not show up in the RDoc output. Thanks.

  I'm having problems with external native DLL. I'm working on ASP.NET 1.1 web application and have this DLL which I load through DLLImport directives. This is how I map DLL functions: [DllImport("somedllname", CallingConvention=CallingConvention.StdCall)] public static extern int function1(string lpFileName,string lpOwnerPw,string lpUserPw); [DllImport("somedllname", CallingConvention=CallingConvention.StdCall)] public static extern int function2(int nHandle); I call the dll methods and all works great, but I have problems with this DLL crashing my web site on some cases, so I would like an option to unload the dll after I use it. • Is WPF Decorator class useful?

  I need to create control to draw border around its child. So, I have created class and derived it from Decorator: class RoundedBoxDecorator : Decorator { protected override Size ArrangeOverride(Size arrangeSize) { //some source } protected override void OnRender(DrawingContext dc) { //some source } } It works fine, but I have some doubts about using Decorator as ancestor. I have found in MSDN that there are no special methods or properties in it, only derived from its ancestors (UIElement or FrameworkElement). ArrangeOverride and OnRender are also derived. So, what for Decorator class was designed and does it makes sense to use it? Or I can derive from FrameworkElement?

If my application "phones home" to provide the unique device ID on which it runs, what other information would I need to collect (e.g., the Apple ID used to purchase the application) to create a valid registration token that authorizes use of the application?   My web app solution consists of 3 projects: Web App (ASP.NET MVC) Business Logic Layer (Class Library) Database Layer (Entity Framework) I want to use Ninject to manage the lifetime of the DataContext generated by the Entity Framework in the Database Layer. The Business Logic layer consists of classes which reference repositories (located in the database layer) and my ASP.NET MVC app references the business logic layer's service classes to run code.   I read some of the answers on here re: testing views and controllers, and mocking, but I still can't figure out how to test an ASP.NET MVC controller that reads and sets Session values (or any other context based variables.) How do I provide a (Session) context for my test methods? Is mocking the answer? Anybody have examples? Basically, I'd like to fake a session before I call the controller method and have the controller use that session. Any ideas?

  I have been checking out Groovy a bit and I feel that moving a Java program to Groovy little by little -- grabbing a class and making it a Groovy class, then converting the method guts a bit at a time -- might be a relatively sane way to take advantage of some of the Groovy language features. I would also do new classes in Groovy. Questions: Is this a reasonable way to convert? Can I keep all of my public methods and and fields in Java? Groovy is "just" a superset, right? What kinds of things would you not do in Groovy, but prefer Java instead?

When should I prefer one over the others? The question arises because of a debate between developers. One never uses String.Format for concatenation - he argues that this is for formatting strings, not for concatenation, and that is is always unreadable because the items in the string are expressed in the wrong order. The other frequently uses String.Format for concatenation, because he thinks it makes the code easier to read, especially where there are several sets of quotes involved. Both these developers also use the concatenation operator and String.Builder, too.

• Is generic Money<TAmount> a good implementation idea?

  I have a Money Type that allows math operations and is sensitive to exchange rates so it will reduce one currency to another if rate is available to calculate in a given currency, rounds by various methods. It has other features that are sensitive to money, but I need to ask if the basic data type used should be made generic in nature. I've realized that the basic data type to hold an amount may differ for financial situations, for example: retail money might be expressed as all cents using int or long where fractions of cents do not matter, decimal is commonly used for its fixed behaviour, sometimes double seems to be used for big finance and large values sometimes a special BigInteger or 3rd-party type is used. I want to know if it would be considered good form to turn Money into Money<T_amount> so it can be used in any one of the above chosen scenarios?

  I'm about to design my Web service API, most of the functions of my API is basically very simular to my web application. Now the question is, should I create 1 single method and reuse them for both the web application and the web service api? (This seems to be the logical solution, however its very complicated; it's much easier to duplicate the method used by the web application, and keep both separate, ie one method for the web application and one method for the web service.)   I have similar question, maybe you can help. Is it possible to get list of all process which are running in the Android system, and kill some of them? I know that there are some applications (task managers), but I would like to write my own, simple application. I would like to write simple task manager, just list of all process and button which will kill some of them. • Handling changes in an interface shared across multiple solutions?

  Our "main" solution is the development code: shared libraries, services, UI projects, etc. The other solution is an integration and automated tests solution. It references several of the development projects. The reason it is separate is to avoid interference with the development solution's unit test VSMDI file. And to allow us to play with different execution methods (other test runners, like Gallio or StoryTeller) without interfering with the development solution. Recently, an interface changed in the development solution, one of our test mocks implemented that interface. But, it was not updated because there was no warning at compile time because it was in another solution. This broke our CI build. Does anyone have a similar setup? How do you handle these issues, do you follow a strict procedure or is there some kind of technical answer?

• What's a good tutorial for creating a gem with RSpec?

  I've been searching around for ways to create a gem with RSpec, but haven't found descriptive tutorials. I started out with Ryan Bates' Making a gem, but I'm looking for a tutorial that discusses creating an acts_as style gem with RSpec. By acts_as, I mean to say that the gem adds certain methods to an existing class in Rails. Why is this important? Because I've found gem templates like New Gem, got a spec to run but when I try to test an Active Record object it starts choking. I've tried requiring active_record in spec_helper.rb but I must be doing something wrong because it doesn't solve the problem. When it comes to plugins, I found this Rails Guide. If there's a gem version for that around that'd be awesome. Thanks guys! P.S. I love screencasts.
