• Ubuntu 11.10 - How can i stop self-feedback-loop, coming directly from my microphone to speaker?

  I have microphone audio, which comes instantly to my speaker. I am using default pulseaudio and alsa from the package. I have tried to setup: 1) PA /etc/pulse/default.pa /etc/asound.conf $ ls analog-input-aux.conf analog-input-fm.conf analog-input-mic.conf analog-input-tvtuner.conf analog-output-desktop-speaker.conf analog-output-mono.conf analog-input.conf analog-input-front-mic.conf analog-input-mic.conf.common analog-input-video.conf analog-output-headphones-2.conf analog-output-speaker.conf analog-input.conf.common analog-input-internal-mic.conf analog-input-mic-line.conf analog-output.conf analog-output-headphones.conf iec958-stereo-output.conf analog-input-dock-mic.conf analog-input-linein.conf analog-input-rear-mic.conf analog-output.conf.common analog-output-lfe-on-mono.conf 2) ALSA in lsmod to make sure no loopback modules are loaded etc but none is resolving it. And there are many less information available on this. Has anyone similar problem solution in Ubuntu 11.10? (this problem i have resolved in Ubuntu 11.04 by replacing the default pulseaudio version to latest source from git, but while trying the same in Ubuntu 11.10 does not worked). Any tips please?

• 2D Procedural Terrain with box2d Assets

  I'm making a game that invloves a tire moving through terrain that is generated randomly over 1000 points. The terrain is always a downwards incline like so: The actual box2d terrain extends one screen width behind and infront of the circular character. I'm now at a stage where I need to add gameplay elements to the terrain such as chasms or physical objects (like the demo polygon in the picture) and am not sure of the best way to structure the procedural generation of the terrain and objects. I currently have a very simple for loop like so: for(int i = 0; i < kMaxHillPoints; i++) { hillKeyPoints[i] = CGPointMake(terrainX, terrainY); if(i%50 == 0) { i += [self generateCasmAtIndex:i]; } terrainX += winsize.width/20; terrainY -= random() % ((int) winsize.height/20); } With the generateCasmAtIndex function add points to the hillKeyPoints array and incrementing the for loop by the required amount. If I want to generate box2d objects as well for specific terrain elements, I'll also have to keep track of the current position of the player and have some sort of array of box2d objects that need to be created at certain locations. I am not sure of an efficient way to accomplish this procedural generation of terrain elements with accompanying box2d objects. My thoughts are: 1) Have many functions for each terrain element (chasm, jump etc.) which add elements to be drawn to an array that is check on each game step - similar to what I've shown above. 2) Create an array of terrain element objects that string together and are looped over to create the terrain and generate the box2d objects. Each object would hold an array of points to be drawn and and array of accompanying box2d objects. Any help on this is much appreciated as I cannot see a 'clean' solution.

• Creating the concept of Time

  So I've reached the point in my exploration of gaming where I'd like to impliment the concept of time into my little demo I've been building. What are some common methodologies for creating the concept of time passing within a game? My thoughts so far: My game loop tendes to spend a fair bit of time sitting around waiting or user input so any time system will likely need to be run in a seperate thread. What I've currently done is create a BackgroundWorker passing in a method that contains a loop triggering every second. This is working fine and I can output information to the console from here etc. Inside this loop I have a DateTime object that is incrimented by 1 minute for every realtime second. (the game begins in the year 01/01/01) Is this a standard way of acheiving this result or are there more tried and tested methods? I'm also curious about how to go about performing time based actions (reducing player energy, moving entities around the game board, life/death etc). Thanks for any pointers or advice. I've searched around however I'm not familiar enough with the terms and so my searches are yeilding little result on this one.

I might figure it out myself in a couple of years. Our ways have crossed several times. And I am extremely thankful for that. I still remember my first session on an Apple Lisa. It must have been around 1985. I was still in school, and we were visiting the University of Hamburg to get some orientation on the departments. When I started I chose Informatics. And I suppose the Apple Lisa played a significant role in my decision. Is it fate that I later wrote about Apple Lisa? I’ve attended your presentation and public demo of the Lisa System at CHI ’98 in Los Angeles. Maybe a video still exists. I should look it up and publish it somewhere. You had also booth duty for Sun Microsystems – presenting HotJava Views, a user interface for a network computer. And you were handing out VHS tapes (!) of Starfire. I still have mine – but no player anymore. Then I joined Sun in 2002, and I guess I popped up in your office each time when I came to Santa Clara. The SEED mentoring program finally made it possible that we exchanged and discussed many ideas on the past and future of HCI. Dueling Interaction Models of Personal-Computing and Web-Computing at MEDICI 2007 is one of the results. But do you remember for instance also our jam session with Phil Clevenger on Hello World? • Help find correct alsa model for onboard sound (alc887?) that will work with jack and have correct mixer setup

  I have a Gigabyte GA-MA74GMT-S2 motherboard. I am using Jack for sound - connected to ALSA. I am running Ubuntu 12.04. aplay -l reports card 0: SB [HDA ATI SB], device 0: ALC887 Analog [ALC887 Analog] The problem is that the default setup, that alsa decides to use, causes stuttering and xruns no matter how generous I set the frames/period or periods/buffer etc. Also, Jack works fine if I plug in an external USB sound system and use that. My processor is an AMD phenom x4 945, and I have 8GB ram, and Video card is Geforce GTX550 Ti, all of which should be quite capable enough. I also tried Pulseaudio and that works fine, but I need to use Jack At first I thought it might be an interrupt conflict, but I have found that adding "options snd-hda-intel model=generic" to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf causes it to play correctly, but the limited mixer setup lacks controls I need - so this setup isn't good enough. Still, it seems to prove it isn't a hardware conflict. I have tried many other models, such as 3stack, 6stack, auto and even basic, and they all suffer from the stuttering. I eventually found "options snd-hda-intel model=3stack-6ch-intel" works without stuttering, and mixer is much closer to what it needs to be. Can anyone help on how to get a correct and accurate model for ALSA to use? • Use depth bias for shadows in deferred shading

  We are building a deferred shading engine and we have a problem with shadows. To add shadows we use two maps: the first one stores the depth of the scene captured by the player's camera and the second one stores the depth of the scene captured by the light's camera. We then ran a shader that analyzes the two maps and outputs the third one with the ready shadow areas for the current frame. The problem we face is a classic one: Self-Shadowing: A standard way to solve this is to use the slope-scale depth bias and depth offsets, however as we are doing things in a deferred way we cannot employ this algorithm. Any attempts to set depth bias when capturing light's view depth produced no or unsatisfying results. So here is my question: MSDN article has a convoluted explanation of the slope-scale: bias = (m × SlopeScaleDepthBias) + DepthBias Where m is the maximum depth slope of the triangle being rendered, defined as: m = max( abs(delta z / delta x), abs(delta z / delta y) ) Could you explain how I can implement this algorithm manually in a shader? Maybe there are better ways to fix this problem for deferred shadows?

• What is a good way to store tilemap data?

  I'm developing a 2D platformer with some uni friends. We've based it upon the XNA Platformer Starter Kit which uses .txt files to store the tile map. While this is simple it does not give us enough control and flexibility with level design. Some examples: for multiple layers of content multiple files are required, each object is fixed onto the grid, doesn't allow for rotation of objects, limited number of characters etc. So I'm doing some research into how to store the level data and map file. This concerns only the file system storage of the tile maps, not the data structure to be used by the game while it is running. The tile map is loaded into a 2D array, so this question is about which source to fill the array from. Reasoning for DB: From my perspective I see less redundancy of data using a database to store the tile data. Tiles in the same x,y position with the same characteristics can be reused from level to level. It seems like it would simple enough to write a method to retrieve all the tiles that are used in a particular level from the database. Reasoning for JSON/XML: Visually editable files, changes can be tracked via SVN a lot easier. But there is repeated content. Do either have any drawbacks (load times, access times, memory etc) compared to the other? And what is commonly used in the industry?   Do you have an OS installed on your USB thumb drive? Booting from it in a VM is now possible, you’ll just have to use a simple trick to get it to work. Last week we showed you how to put Ubuntu on a USB drive in a separate partition, and we also discussed working with VMware Player (our favourite VM Client). But have you ever tried booting from a USB drive in VMWare? It doesn’t allow doing so, but we will force it to boot from a USB, with a bit of old geekery.
