• Dual Home HP Server running Win2003

  Hello everyone. I'm new to server dual homing. I have a HP ProLiant DL360 G4p running Win2003 with 2 NICs , only one is currently active. I'd like to activate the 2nd NIC connected (in a active/passive state) to a 2nd switch with only one IP address and ideally only one mac layer address. The 1st switch is a Cisco 2960G and the 2nd is a Cisco C3560G. There are VLANS, RSTP and PAGP in use already. Can someone give me an idea, in broad terms , of what technology/protocols I should be investigating (HSRP, SLB Teaming etc.) ? I can provide more info if needed. Thanks, Colm.

• Windows Server 2008, IIS7 and Windows Authentication

  We currently have a development server set up which we are trying to test some Windows authentication ASP.NET code on. We have turned on Windows Authentication in IIS7 on Windows Server 2008 R2 fine, and it asks the user for a username and password as excepted, but the problem is it doesn't appear to accept any credentials. This code for example... Protected Sub Page_Load(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Me.Load Page.Title = "Home page for " + User.Identity.Name End Sub ...always returns an empty string. One theory we have is that we dont have Active Directory installed as of yet, we are just testing this by logging on via the machine name not a domain. Is this type of authentication only applicatable to domains (if so we can probably install Active Directory and some test accounts) - or is it possible to get the user identity when logging in using the machine name? Ideally we would like to be able to test this on our local machines (Windows 7 Pro) using our own accounts (again these aren't on a domain) and IIS but this has the same issue as our dev server. • pthreads_setaffinity_np: Invalid argument?

  I've managed to get my pthreads program sort of working. Basically I am trying to manually set the affinity of 4 threads such that thread 1 runs on CPU 1, thread 2 runs on CPU 2, thread 3 runs on CPU 3, and thread 4 runs on CPU 4. After compiling, my code works for a few threads but not others (seems like thread 1 never works) but running the same compiled program a couple of different times gives me different results.   For desktop browser all modern browser uses Zoom functionality so we can use PX but if same site can be seen on mobile then would px not be good for zooming in mobile browsers. or use of px is also fine for mobile browsers. even if we don't care for IE 6 , should we use em in place of px still if we are not making different site for mobile, same site will be seen on both desktop and mobile phones (iphone, blackberry, windows mobile, opera mini, android etc?

• Firewall Authentication - logon failed

  I am attempting to use a Watchguard firebox 550e with Fireware XTM 11 to authenticate incoming traffic for RDP access. I have configured the firewall to use my domain controller for Active directory authentication with a Windows 2000 server farm and added a couple of user accounts to the users list in the firewall, but when I attempt to log onto the authentication page for the firewall, I get Logon failed. I know that the user names work and that the passwords are correct. I am also certain that I have told it to log on using Active Directory instead of the FireboxDB. I have tried using the username alone, the domain\username, and the email address. I believe that the Search base is correct (DC=mydomainname,DC=com), and I did not change any defaults for sAMAccountName (and I do not recall making any changes to those items when configuring the domain structure). Any assistance would be appreciated.

  I need some help configuring AD LDS (Active Directory Lightweight Directory Services). I'm not an administrator, have never configured domains and I don't have a clue how to add new users to existing domains. The thing is I need to develop an app on top of Sharepoint 2010 that must be connected to AD. I've chosen AD LDS because I can install it on Windows 7 and it acts as an active directory even though there's no domain controller present in the network. What I've done so far: I've installed AD LDS I've added a new instance with appication directory partition name DN=Air,DC=Watanabe,DC=pri I can connect to it using ADSI Edit and see all kinds of strange But now I don't know what to do? When it opens I can see the window below, but where's next? Can anybody give me some guidelines, how can I add domain users, so I can use them in my app AD required app?

• Any way to stop VMWare workstation from dropping SSH connections?

  I have VMWare workstation 8 with a few Linux guests. I have had problems maintaining an active SSH connection to my VMs when they are in bridged mode. I first read that the onboard realtek network cards were not well supported so I bought a Intel Pro/1000 GT card. This supposedly had support. But this made no difference. Connections via SSH are active for about the first 3 minutes then hang and die. I have changed the TCP Checksum offload on the Intel and Realtek NICs, but this only works some of the time and even then not for very long. The best I could do was about 20 minutes before the connection was dropped. Any ideas?

At peak - 4K-5K database sessions Oracle is installed on Linux 5.8 (Oracle's unbreakable version) the database size: 7TB disk storage: NetApp (connected with 10GB network) I would like to replace old servers (IT will purchase HP blades BL685C). Servers will have 256GB of RAM. I need your help to figure out what to do with CPUs and cores. Options: 2 CPUs (2.3 GHz) with 16 cores each 4 CPUs (3.0 GHz) with 8 cores each Question: Which one should I pick? P.S. Next year, we will migrate from Oracle to SQL server. I hope, whatever option you recommend will work for both platforms

• Sync iPhone applications in iTunes

  Suppose I have one the one hand one iTunes library on a PC used to sync Outlook contacts and calendar plus on the other hand one iTunes library on a Mac that syncs music, podcasts, apps, ringtones, etc. Both libraries are based on iTunes 9.0.2. It turns out that the iTunes library on the PC always tries to sync apps and ringtones as well. Unfortunately, this boils down to deleting apps and ringtones from the iPhone because the apps are not part of the iTunes library on the PC. After unchecking the checkbox to sync apps and ringtones and plugging the iPhone into the Mac the checkbox is also unchecked on the Mac. It seems as if the settings for syncing apps and ringtones are stored on the iPhone rather than in the particular iTunes library. Whenever syncing apps and ringtones is active on one machine it is also active on the other and vice versa. How can I make the PC ignore apps and ringtones and only sync contacts and calendar?

• Is it possible to interrupt or cancel the trash-delete process?

  I am connected to the company server, onsite not remote, which is Windows based. When, in the OS finder, I go to delete a file or directory that resides on the window-based server, the trash progress panel appears as usual. Not infrequently it will just hang there appearing to be active but no progress occurs on the progress bar. So the X is chosen to stop or cancel the process. A new panel appears, and while appearing to be active, again, just hangs there indefinitely. My lack of reputation prevents posting a screen shot - sorry. The question then is this: Is there a way via the Activity Monitor, Terminal, etc. to interrupt this deleting process in the Mac OS? Currently, I have to force shutdown and reboot to eradicate the ever-deleting panel. Finder relaunch does not solve and only eliminates the finder until I force reboot. Any assistance is appreciated. • Internet wireless connected with limited access, windows vista

  I had some malware in my computer so I did a bit of manual work to remove it including resetting TCP/IP. Now the malware is gone. I can see my home wireless network and I can get connected to it but when connected I get the Internet wireless connected with limited access message. When I go to the IE I cannot browse. When I tried to ping 192.168.1.1 I got an Error Code 1231 Unconnected Network Problem. I have deactivated my Windows firewall as I thought it could be hyperactive security. Still no luck. I have Norton but it is not active, I have also Avast and AVG installed but they are not active. Any ideas?

• Winxp system context menus blank after last security update

  Because of a CERT advisory of several out-of-band security updates released by MS I did a Critical Updates pass on my WinXP Pro SP3 machine. I now have the situation where it seems that all of my WinXP-generated menus come up with all items black. If I wave the cursor over the menu, the items will update as they become active (go blue) and then update correctly (to black-text-on-white-background) as they go non-active. Separators (which never get a hover event) stay black. App-level context menus seem to work fine (Firefox, OpenOffice, etc.) with the exception of Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer, which both exhibit this behavior on both their context menus and on their menu bar drop down menus. I'm assuming that's true because they are all using the same library code. Thoughts? Fixes? Help!

• Site-to-Site PPTP VPN connection between two Windows Server 2008 R2 servers

  We have two Windows Server 2008 R2 machines, one in our main office and one in a new office which we have just moved offsite. The main office has previously been handling client-to-server PPTP VPN connections. Now that we have moved our second server out of office, we want to set up a demand-dial or persistent VPN connection from the second server to the primary. Using a custom setting RRAS profile, we have successfully managed to set up a site-to-site VPN connection so that from the second server itself, it can access any of the devices in the main office and communicate back. However, any connected machines in the second office cannot use this connection, even when using the second server as gateway. The demand-dial interface is setup from the Second Server dialing into Main Server and a static route set up on RRAS for 192.168.0.0 with subnet mask 255.255.0.0 pointing down this network interface. The main office has the network of 192.168.0.0/16 (subnet mask 255.255.0.0). The second office has the network of 172.16.100.0/24 (subnet mask 255.255.255.0). What steps do we need to take to ensure traffic from the second office PCs going towards 192.168.x.x addresses use the VPN route? Many Thanks in advance for any help the community can offer.   I am in the process of upgrading my Windows SBS 2008 server running Exchange, Active Directory and as a File server to Windows Server 2012 essentials. Now I know that Windows Server 2012 essentials does not have exchange, thus I was looking to migrate the Active directory and the file server to Windows Server 2012 essentials, Then I would have a separate Virtual machine running Windows server 2012 standard with Exchange 2013. Now my question is, what should I do first? Migrate the AD and File server to Windows 2012 essentials and then after the migration is finished, I create a local move of the mailboxes from SBS 2008 to Windows Server 2012 standard running exchange 2013? or should this be the other way round?

• Can't reconnect to my RDP session

  I use a VM through RDP. When I'm done for the day, I just disconnect the session and reconnect in the morning. That allows me to pick up what I was doing and not close all the applications. As I'm the only user, this generally works well. Today, I can't reconnect to my session from yesterday. When I RDP, I get a new session. When I run query user, I can see my other session: USERNAME SESSIONNAME ID STATE IDLE TIME LOGON TIME me rdp-tcp#82 1 Active 15:00 4/22/2010 9:00 AM me rdp-tcp#91 2 Active . 4/30/2010 9:00 AM If I try to use Terminal Services Manager to remote control the other session, I get this error: Session (ID 1) remote control failed (Error 7044 - The request to control another session remotely was denied. ) Is there any way to reconnect to this session, or do I need to just kill it?

  I am setting up a mail server: Dovecot and Postfix with MySQL support and Postfixadmin. Spend literally all day trying to figure it out, but I'm still unable to neither send nor receive any emails. To my knowledge, I have configured everything correctly, so either there is another problem, or my knowledge isn't good enough.
