• How to do directional per fragment lighting in world space?

  I am attempting to create a GLSL shader for simple, per-fragment directional light. So far, after following many tutorials, I have continually ran into the issue: my light is specified in world coordinates, however, the shader treats the light's position as being in eye space, thus, the light direction changes when I move the camera. My question is, how to I transform a directional light position such as (50, 50, 50, 0) into eye space, or, would doing things this way be the incorrect approach to the problem?

• Empathy Audio Call Option Disabled 13.04

  Recently, I noticed that the Audio Call option is now disabled (greyed out) in Empathy when I right click on an available GoogleTalk contact. This option used to be available a few days ago. I do have libtelepathy-farstream3, libfarstream-0.1-0, and libfarstream-0.2-2 installed on Ubuntu 13.04 x64 with kernel 3.8.0-27. (Note, I just upgraded the kernel to 3.8.0-29 and still have this issue). Has anyone else experienced this recently, and if so, is there a resolution?

• Live CD has black screen HP DV6

  Attempting to install/try ubuntu (11.10, 12.04) on my new laptop, using a liveCD (and tried USB). I get the purple screen (with the man/keyboard at the bottom) and after that the screen flashes bright white before going black. Ubuntu continues to load in the background, with login sound etc but the screen is off. I have tried as many different solutions as I could find including: using nomodestep, xforcevesa, i915.modeset=0, and also now i915.modeset=1 in boot options (seperately): varying consequences, but either I end up at a blinking cursor with no prompt, a command line (startx fails: no screen found), or the original blank screen again Tried booting from VirtualBox - it crashes at the same place the screen would go blank when using a CD/USB tried 11.04: I don't have this problem BUT when trying to install, I get a ubi-partman error 141 (possibly down to the three partitions that came on my laptop... not sure why HP needed there own separate partition for HP Tools...) Model: HP Pavillion DV6 6B08SA Processor: AMD Quad-Core A6-3410MX APU with Radeon HD 6545G2 Dual Graphics (1.6 GHZ 4 MB L2 cache ) Chipset: AMD RS880M Any help would be greatly appreciated. I just want to be able to partition the drive and install Ubuntu. I'm assuming the issue is graphics card related, although I have no confirmation of that. • Planning Bulletin for JRE 7: What EBS Customers Can Do Today

  An initiative to certify Oracle E-Business Suite with JRE 7 desktop clients is underway.  We have tested EBS 11.5.10.2, 12.0, and 12.1 with JRE 7. We have fixes for nearly all of the compatibility issues now, and are working hard to produce the remaining fixes quickly. A. When will JRE 7 be certified with Oracle E-Business Suite? We will announce the certification of the E-Business Suite with JRE 7 once all fixes are available, verified, and documented.  Certification announcements will be distributed through My Oracle Support, My Oracle Support Community Forums, Oracle Technology Network Forums, newsletters, and user group news outlets. Oracle's Revenue Recognition rules prohibit us from discussing certification and release dates.  In addition to the standard communication channels listed above, customers are encouraged to monitor or subscribe to this blog.    B. What can customers do to prepare for the JRE 7 certification? Customers should ensure that they are on the latest available JRE 6 update. Of the compatibility issues identified so far with JRE 7, the most critical is an issue that prevents E-Business Suite Forms-based products from launching on Windows desktops that are running JRE 7.  Customers can prevent this issue today by ensuring that they have applied the latest certified patches documented for JRE 6 configurations to their EBS application tier servers: Apply Forms patch 14615390 to EBS 11i environments (Note 125767.1) Apply Forms patch 14614795 to EBS 12.0 and 12.1 environments (Note 437878.1) These patches are compatible with JRE 6 and 7, production ready, and fully-tested with the E-Business Suite.  These patches may be applied immediately to all E-Business Suite environments. All other Forms prerequisites documented in the Notes above should also be applied now. C. What else will be required by the final certified configuration? • Should I use JavaFx properties?

  I'm usually very careful to keep my Model, View, and Controller code separate. The thing is JavaFx properties are so convenient to bind them all together. The issue is that it makes my entire code design dependent on JavaFx, which I feel I should not being doing. I should be able to change the view without changing too much of the model and controller. So should I ignore the convenience of JavaFx properties, or should I embrace them and the fact that it reduces my codes flexibility.

• How exactly is Google Webmaster Tools measuring "Site Performance"?

  I've been working for two months now on improving our response time (mainly server side) on a new forum (a brand new product on a technical point of view) we've launched in Germany a few month ago and I'm a lot surprised by the results I get. I monitor our response time using Apache logs and our own implementation of Boomerang beacon. Using my stats, I can see that our new product responds in about 680 ms where our old product was responding in about 1050 ms. On the other side, Google Webmaster Tool tells us that our pages have an average reponse time of about 1500 ms today where it was 700 three months ago with our old product. I've figured that GWT was taking client side metrics into account so I've added some measures on our Boomerang beacon and everything looks just fine. I've also ran some random pages on ySlow and Google's Page Speed and everything looks better than it was before. We event have a 82% on Google's Page Speed tool which is quite cool for a site with some ads in it :) Lately, we have signed a deal with Akamai to use two of their products : CDN for our static files (we were using another CDN before but it wasn't very effective) and RMA to improve Networks routes. We have also introduced a new agressive cache mecanism to ensure that most of the pages served to crawlers are cached by our memcache grid. After checking my metrics, it seems that this changes have improved from 650ms to about 500ms, which is good (still not great but it is definitly an improvement). But webmaster tools continues to report an increasing average response time where we see it decreasing in the same time. Have you ever had the same kind of wierd behavior on your sites while doing performance improvements ? Do you have any idea how to monitor the same thing Google does with Site Performance in Google Webmaster Tools so that we could improve our site and constantly check if it is what Google wants ? Edit 2011/07/26 : Thanks for your answers guys ! Nevertheless, I was not precise enough. The main issue we have is not with the Site Performance page but with the Crawl Stats one for now. We probably found an issue on our side with some very slow pages (around 3000 ms !!) and we are trying to fix them. I'll keep you posted as soon I'll have some infos. Thanks again !

• Business layer access to the data layer

  I have a Business layer (BL) and a Data layer (DL). I have an object o with a child objects collection of Type C. I would like to provide a semantics like the following o.Children.Add("info"). In the BL I would like to have a static CLASS that all of business layer classes uses to get a reference to the current datalayer instance. Is there any issue with that or must I use the factory pattern to limit creation to A class in the BL that knows the DL instance.

• After locking the screen in Ubuntu 14.04, password is not accepted, How can it be fixed?

Since the last update every time I lock the screen (when leaving my room for example) - when I get back and input my password, it is not accepted even though it's the correct password, the error I get is: Password incorrect, please try again I found that clicking the "Switch Account" fixes the issue but it is very annoying, if you know any way to fix it, it would be nice. • A brief note for customers running SOA Suite on AIX platforms

  When running Oracle SOA Suite with IBM JVMs on the AIX platform, we have seen performance slowdowns and/or memory leaks. On occasion, we have even encountered some OutOfMemoryError conditions and the concomittant Java coredump. If you are experiencing this issue, the resolution may be to configure -Dsun.reflect.inflationThreshold=0 in your JVM startup parameters. https://www.ibm.com/developerworks/java/library/j-nativememory-aix/ contains a detailed discussion of the IBM AIX JVM memory model, but I will summarize my interpretation and understanding of it in the context of SOA Suite, below. Java ClassLoaders on IBM JVMs are allocated a native memory area into which they are anticipated to map such things as jars loaded from the filesystem. This is an excellent memory optimization, as the file can be loaded into memory once and then shared amongst many JVMs on the same host, allowing for excellent horizontal scalability on AIX hosts. However, Java ClassLoaders are not used exclusively for loading files from disk. A performance optimization by the Oracle Java language developers enables reflectively accessed data to optimize from a JNI call into Java bytecodes which are then amenable to hotspot optimizations, amongst other things. This performance optimization is called inflation, and it is executed by generating a sun.reflect.DelegatingClassLoader instance dynamically to inject the Java bytecode into the virtual machine. It is generally considered an excellent optimization. However, it interacts very negatively with the native memory area allocated by the IBM JVM, effectively locking out memory that could otherwise be used by the Java process. SOA Suite and WebLogic are both very large users of reflection code. They reflectively use many code paths in their operation, generating lots of DelegatingClassLoaders in normal operation. The IBM JVM slowdown and subsequent OutOfMemoryError are as a direct result of the Java memory consumed by the DelegatingClassLoader instances generated by SOA Suite and WebLogic. Java garbage collection runs more frequently to try and keep memory available, until it can no longer do so and throws OutOfMemoryError. The setting sun.reflect.inflationThreshold=0 disables this optimization entirely, never allowing the JVM to generate the optimized reflection code. IBM JVMs are susceptible to this issue primarily because all Java ClassLoaders have this native memory allocation, which is shared with the regular Java heap. Oracle JVMs don't automatically give all ClassLoaders a native memory area, and my understanding is that jar files are never mapped completely from shared memory in the same way as IBM does it. This results in different behaviour characteristics on IBM vs Oracle JVMs.

  We're running freebsd + jail, and lighttpd + fastcgi + php_cgi. We changed our domain and all of a sudden we are getting SPORADIC connection closes. We recently changed our subdomain from www to shop but really there have been no other major changes. When I modified lighttpd's server.max-read-idle from default 60 to 5 the connection close message comes much more rapidly however it has not corrected the issue.

• Nautilus Image Converter: strip EXIF metadata

  I just found out that images can have more than 20KB of EXIF data. Not really an issue with 2MB files, but if you have small thumbnails this really adds up. I use mogrify often to resize, and I can use mogrify -strip to remove the EXIF data. However, if I use Nautilus Image Converter there is no way to strip this data. Is there something in the configuration I can set so it always automatically adds the -strip flag to the command?

• How granular should a command be in a CQ[R]S model?

  I'm considering a project to migrate part of our WCF-based SOA over to a service bus model (probably nServiceBus) and using some basic pub-sub to achieve Command-Query Separation. I'm not new to SOA, or even to service bus models, but I confess that until recently my concept of "separation" was limited to run-of-the-mill database mirroring and replication. Still, I'm attracted to the idea because it seems to provide all the benefits of an eventually-consistent system while sidestepping many of the obvious drawbacks (most notably the lack of proper transactional support). I've read a lot on the subject from Udi Dahan who is basically the guru on ESB architectures (at least in the Microsoft world), but one thing he says really puzzles me: As we get larger entities with more fields on them, we also get more actors working with those same entities, and the higher the likelihood that something will touch some attribute of them at any given time, increasing the number of concurrency conflicts. [...] A core element of CQRS is rethinking the design of the user interface to enable us to capture our users’ intent such that making a customer preferred is a different unit of work for the user than indicating that the customer has moved or that they’ve gotten married. Using an Excel-like UI for data changes doesn’t capture intent, as we saw above. -- Udi Dahan, Clarified CQRS From the perspective described in the quotation, it's hard to argue with that logic. But it seems to go against the grain with respect to SOAs. An SOA (and really services in general) are supposed to deal with coarse-grained messages so as to minimize network chatter - among many other benefits. I realize that network chatter is less of an issue when you've got highly-distributed systems with good message queuing and none of the baggage of RPC, but it doesn't seem wise to dismiss the issue entirely. Udi almost seems to be saying that every attribute change (i.e. field update) ought to be its own command, which is hard to imagine in the context of one user potentially updating hundreds or thousands of combined entities and attributes as it often is with a traditional web service. One batch update in SQL Server may take a fraction of a second given a good highly-parameterized query, table-valued parameter or bulk insert to a staging table; processing all of these updates one at a time is slow, slow, slow, and OLTP database hardware is the most expensive of all to scale up/out. Is there some way to reconcile these competing concerns? Am I thinking about it the wrong way? Does this problem have a well-known solution in the CQS/ESB world? If not, then how does one decide what the "right level" of granularity in a Command should be? Is there some "standard" one can use as a starting point - sort of like 3NF in databases - and only deviate when careful profiling suggests a potentially significant performance benefit? Or is this possibly one of those things that, despite several strong opinions being expressed by various experts, is really just a matter of opinion?

  I was thinking about this when I was starting to set up some code for a new project: are there any rules of thumb for when a method should be part of an object, and when it should be a stand alone function that takes an object as a parameter? EDIT: as pointed out in a comment, this can depend on language. I was working in C++ when it came to mind, though I'm this is an issue across a number of languages (and would still love to see answers that pertain to them).

• Why aren't more desktop apps written with Qt?

  As far as I know and have understood in my experience with Qt, it's a very good and easy to learn library. It has a very well designed API and is cross-platform, and these are just two of the many features that make it attractive. I'm interested to know why more programmers don't use Qt. Is there a deficiency which speaks against it? Which feature makes other libraries better than Qt? Is the issue related to licensing?

• Dump debugging with Parallel Stacks

  One of the areas where we fixed many bugs for Beta2 in our parallel debugging windows is with regards to managed dump debugging. So it was really cool to see Tess use the Parallel Stacks window in that scenario in her video demo with Scott.Other than the neat ability to open managed dumps in VS2010, Parallel Stacks was the only debugging feature she needed for diagnosing the issue! I'm currently using Direct3D 11 and not 10, and the signature for this function is: D3DXVECTOR3 *pOut, CONST D3DXVECTOR3 *pV, CONST D3D10_VIEWPORT *pViewport, CONST D3DXMATRIX *pProjection, CONST D3DXMATRIX *pView, CONST D3DXMATRIX *pWorld As you may have noticed, it requires a D3D10_VIEWPORT, and I'm using a Direct3D 11 viewport, D3D11_VIEWPORT. Do you have any ideas how I can use D3DXVec3Unproject with Direct3D 11?

• My Encore N300 wireless usb doesn't connect, any workarounds?

  I decided to wipe Windows 7 and made a full installation. Everything works great but for a Encore N300 wireless usb dongle that I use on my desktop. Ubuntu seems to recognize it and I can browse the available networks, but I can connect to any of them. I was told that I should download its drivers, and so I did it, but I don't know how to install them. Please, I'd like to know if my connectivity problem is really a driver issue or some other thing.
