• Sql Query - Limiting query results

- by Gublooo
I am quite certain we cannot use the LIMIT clause for what I want to do - so wanted to find if there are any other ways we can accomplish this. I have a table which captures which user visited which store. Every time a user visits a store, a row is inserted into this table. Some of the fields are shopping_id (primary key) store_id user_id Now what I want is - for a given set of stores, find the top 5 users who have visited the store max number of times. I can do this 1 store at a time as: select store_id,user_id,count(1) as visits from shopping where store_id = 60 group by user_id,store_id order by visits desc Limit 5 This will give me the 5 users who have visited store_id=60 the max times What I want to do is provide a list of 10 store_ids and for each store fetch the 5 users who have visited that store max times select store_id,user_id,count(1) as visits from shopping where store_id in (60,61,62,63,64,65,66) group by user_id,store_id order by visits desc Limit 5 This will not work as the Limit at the end will return only 5 rows rather than 5 rows for each store. Any ideas on how I can achieve this. I can always write a loop and pass 1 store at a time but wanted to know if there is a better way

• Common Table Expressions slow when using a table variable

- by Phil Haselden
I have been experimenting with the following (simplified) CTE. When using a table variable () the query runs for minutes before I cancel it. Any of the other commented out methods return in less than a second. If I replace the whole WHERE clause with an INNER JOIN it is fast as well. Any ideas why using a table variable would run so slowly? FWIW: The database contains 2.5 million records and the inner query returns 2 records. CREATE TABLE #rootTempTable (RootID int PRIMARY KEY) INSERT INTO #rootTempTable VALUES (1360); DECLARE @rootTableVar TABLE (RootID int PRIMARY KEY); INSERT INTO @rootTableVar VALUES (1360); WITH My_CTE AS ( SELECT ROW_NUMBER() OVER(ORDER BY d.DocumentID) rownum, d.DocumentID, d.Title FROM [Document] d WHERE d.LocationID IN ( SELECT LocationID FROM Location JOIN @rootTableVar rtv ON Location.RootID = rtv.RootID -- VERY SLOW! --JOIN #rootTempTable tt ON Location.RootID = tt.RootID -- Fast --JOIN (SELECT 1360 as RootID) AS rt ON Location.RootID = rt.RootID -- Fast --WHERE RootID = 1360 -- Fast ) ) SELECT * FROM My_CTE WHERE (rownum > 0) AND (rownum <= 100) ORDER BY rownum

• Boosting my GA with Neural Networks and/or Reinforcement Learning

- by AlexT
As I have mentioned in previous questions I am writing a maze solving application to help me learn about more theoretical CS subjects, after some trouble I've got a Genetic Algorithm working that can evolve a set of rules (handled by boolean values) in order to find a good solution through a maze. That being said, the GA alone is okay, but I'd like to beef it up with a Neural Network, even though I have no real working knowledge of Neural Networks (no formal theoretical CS education). After doing a bit of reading on the subject I found that a Neural Network could be used to train a genome in order to improve results. Let's say I have a genome (group of genes), such as 1 0 0 1 0 1 0 1 0 1 1 1 0 0... How could I use a Neural Network (I'm assuming MLP?) to train and improve my genome? In addition to this as I know nothing about Neural Networks I've been looking into implementing some form of Reinforcement Learning, using my maze matrix (2 dimensional array), although I'm a bit stuck on what the following algorithm wants from me: (from http://people.revoledu.com/kardi/tutorial/ReinforcementLearning/Q-Learning-Algorithm.htm) 1. Set parameter , and environment reward matrix R 2. Initialize matrix Q as zero matrix 3. For each episode: * Select random initial state * Do while not reach goal state o Select one among all possible actions for the current state o Using this possible action, consider to go to the next state o Get maximum Q value of this next state based on all possible actions o Compute o Set the next state as the current state End Do End For The big problem for me is implementing a reward matrix R and what a Q matrix exactly is, and getting the Q value. I use a multi-dimensional array for my maze and enum states for every move. How would this be used in a Q-Learning algorithm? If someone could help out by explaining what I would need to do to implement the following, preferably in Java although C# would be nice too, possibly with some source code examples it'd be appreciated.

• Debugging Silverlight crash

- by RHLopez
I am trying to debug an IE 8 crash caused by a Silverlight application. I managed to find some articles on how to do a memory dump when a process crashes. I loaded the dump in windbg and ran !analyze -v. Below is the result. I am stuck at what further steps I can take to figure out what module or library that is running in Silverlight is causing the crash. So all I have right now is the crash in IE is caused by an Access violation (attempt to execute non-executable address) and from what is in the stack trace that some animation is running in Silverlight. Any tips or articles that would help me debug this will be appreciated. This dump file has an exception of interest stored in it. The stored exception information can be accessed via .ecxr. • Legacy URL rewriting with query string parameters

- by John Kaster
I've looked at http://stackoverflow.com/questions/817325/asp-net-mvc-routing-legacy-urls-passing-querystring-ids-to-controller-actions and several other similar posts for legacy URL routing, but I can't get past the error "The RouteData must contain an item named 'controller' with a non-empty string value." Looking this up on line didn't give me any hints to solve my problem. I've implemented the Legacy routing class described in the link above, and this is what I've defined in the routing table: routes.Add( "Legacy", new LegacyRoute("fooref.aspx", "FooRef", new LegacyRouteHandler()) ); routes.MapRoute( "FooRef", "{controller}/{action}", new { controller = "Home", action = "Index", foo_id = UrlParameter.Optional, bar_id = UrlParameter.Optional } ); When I use Phil Haack's route debugger, it indicates that fooref.aspx has a match, but when I turn the route debugger off, I get the error above. If I reverse the statement order, I get "Resource not found" for /ctprefer.aspx, which makes sense -- so it appears to be finding that as a valid route when put in the other order. Where do I need to declare this missing controller reference? Have routing requirements changed for ASP.NET MVC 2 RTM?

• Find the "largest" dense sub matrix in a large sparse matrix

- by BCS
Given a large sparse matrix (say 10k+ by 1M+) I need to find a subset, not necessarily continuous, of the rows and columns that form a dense matrix (all non-zero elements). I want this sub matrix to be as large as possible (not the largest sum, but the largest number of elements) within some aspect ratio constraints. Are there any known exact or aproxamate solutions to this problem? A quick scan on Google seems to give a lot of close-but-not-exactly results. What terms should I be looking for? edit: Just to clarify; the sub matrix need not be continuous. In fact the row and column order is completely arbitrary so adjacency is completely irrelevant. A thought based on Chad Okere's idea Order the rows from largest count to smallest count (not necessary but might help perf) Select two rows that have a "large" overlap Add all other rows that won't reduce the overlap Record that set Add whatever row reduces the overlap by the least Repeat at #3 until the result gets to small Start over at #2 with a different starting pair Continue until you decide the result is good enough

• Objective C - displaying data in NSTextView

- by Leo
Hi, I'm having difficulties displaying data in a TextView in iPhone programming. I'm analyzing incoming audio data (from the microphone). In order to do that, I create an object "analyzer" from my SignalAnalyzer class which performs analysis of the incoming data. What I would like to do is to display each new incoming data in a TextView in realtime. So when I push a button, I create the object "analyzer" whiwh analyze the incoming data. Each time there is new data, I need to display it on the screen in a TextView. My problem is that I'm getting an error because (I think) I'm trying to send a message to the parent class (the one taking care of displaying stuff in my TextView : it has a TexView instance variable linked in Interface Builder). What should I do in order to tell my parent class what it needs to display ? Or how sohould I design my classes to display automaticlally something ? Thank you for your help. PS : Here is my error : 2010-04-19 14:59:39.360 MyApp[1421:5003] void WebThreadLockFromAnyThread(), 0x14a890: Obtaining the web lock from a thread other than the main thread or the web thread. • Game loop and time tracking

- by David Brown
Maybe I'm just an idiot, but I've been trying to implement a game loop all day and it's just not clicking. I've read literally every article I could find on Google, but the problem is that they all use different timing mechanisms, which makes them difficult to apply to my particular situation (some use milliseconds, other use ticks, etc). Basically, I have a Clock object that updates each time the game loop executes. internal class Clock { public static long Timestamp { get { return Stopwatch.GetTimestamp(); } } public static long Frequency { get { return Stopwatch.Frequency; } } private long _startTime; private long _lastTime; private TimeSpan _totalTime; private TimeSpan _elapsedTime; ///
/// The amount of time that has passed since the first step. ///
public TimeSpan TotalTime { get { return _totalTime; } } ///
/// The amount of time that has passed since the last step. ///
public TimeSpan ElapsedTime { get { return _elapsedTime; } } public Clock() { Reset(); } public void Reset() { _startTime = Timestamp; _lastTime = 0; _totalTime = TimeSpan.Zero; _elapsedTime = TimeSpan.Zero; } public void Tick() { long currentTime = Timestamp; if (_lastTime == 0) _lastTime = currentTime; _totalTime = TimestampToTimeSpan(currentTime - _startTime); _elapsedTime = TimestampToTimeSpan(currentTime - _lastTime); _lastTime = currentTime; } public static TimeSpan TimestampToTimeSpan(long timestamp) { return TimeSpan.FromTicks( (timestamp * TimeSpan.TicksPerSecond) / Frequency); } } I based most of that on the XNA GameClock, but it's greatly simplified. Then, I have a Time class which holds various times that the Update and Draw methods need to know. public class Time { public TimeSpan ElapsedVirtualTime { get; internal set; } public TimeSpan ElapsedRealTime { get; internal set; } public TimeSpan TotalVirtualTime { get; internal set; } public TimeSpan TotalRealTime { get; internal set; } internal Time() { } internal Time(TimeSpan elapsedVirtualTime, TimeSpan elapsedRealTime, TimeSpan totalVirutalTime, TimeSpan totalRealTime) { ElapsedVirtualTime = elapsedVirtualTime; ElapsedRealTime = elapsedRealTime; TotalVirtualTime = totalVirutalTime; TotalRealTime = totalRealTime; } } My main class keeps a single instance of Time, which it should constantly update during the game loop. So far, I have this: private static void Loop() { do { Clock.Tick(); Time.TotalRealTime = Clock.TotalTime; Time.ElapsedRealTime = Clock.ElapsedTime; InternalUpdate(Time); InternalDraw(Time); } while (!_exitRequested); } The real time properties of the time class turn out great. Now I'd like to get a proper update/draw loop working so that the state is updated a variable number of times per frame, but at a fixed timestep. At the same time, the Time.TotalVirtualTime and Time.ElapsedVirtualTime should be updated accordingly. In addition, I intend for this to support multiplayer in the future, in case that makes any difference to the design of the game loop. Any tips or examples on how I could go about implementing this (aside from links to articles)?

• Where does lucene .net cache the search results?

- by Lanceomagnifico
Hi, I'm trying to figure out where Lucene stores the cached query results, and how it's configured to do so - and how long it caches for. This is for an ASP.NET 3.5 solution. I'm getting this problem: If I run a search and sort the result by a particular product field, it seems to work the very first time each search and sort combination is used. If I then go in and change some product attributes, reindex and run the same search and sort, I get the products returned in the same order as the very first result. example Product A is named: foo Product B is named: bar For the first search, sort by name desc. This results in: Product A Product B Now mix up the data a bit: Change names to: Product A named: bar Product B named: foo reindex verify that the index contains the changes for these two products. search Result: Product A Product B Since I changed the alphabetical order of the names, I expected: Product B Product A So I think that Lucene is caching the search results. (Which, btw, is a very good thing.) I just need to know where/how to clear these results. I've tried deleting the index files and doing an IISreset to clear the memory, but it seems to have no effect. So I'm thinking there is another set of Lucene files outside of the indexes that Lucene uses for caching. EDIT I just found out that you must create the index for field you wish to sort on as un-tokenized. I had the field as tokenized, so sorting didn't work.

• Naming of ASP.NET controls inside User Controls with ASP.NET MVC

- by skb
I am wondering if there is a way to make ASP.NET controls play nicely with my ASP.NET MVC app. Here is what I am doing. I have an order page which displays info about a single Order object. The page will normally have a bunch of rows of data, each row representing an OrderItem object. Each row is an ASP.NET User Control. On the user control there is a form element with two text boxes (Quantity and Price), and an update button. When I click the update button, I expect the form to post the data for that individual OrderItem row to a controller method and update the OrderItem record in the database. Here is my problem: When the post happens, the framework complains because the fields on the form don't match the parameters on the controller method. Each form field is something like "OrderItem_1$Quantity" or "OrderItem_2$Price" instead of just "Quantity" or "Price" which would match my method parameters. I have been told that I can overcome this by making sure that the IDs of all my controls are unique for the page, but allow the NAMEs to be repeated between different forms, so that if a form for an individual row is posted, the name can be something that will match what is on my controller method. The only problem is that I am using ASP.NET controls for my text boxes (which I REALLY want to continue doing) and I can't find any way to override the name field. There is no Name propery on an ASP.NET control, and even when I try to set it using the Attributes accessor property by saying "control.Attributes["Name"] = "Price";" it just adds another name= attribute to the HTML tag which doesn't work. Does any one know how I can make this work? I really don't like all of the HtmlHelper functions like TextBox and DropDown because I hate having my .aspx be so PHP or ASP like with the <%% tags and everything. Thanks!

• UIImageJPEGRepresentation - memory release issue

- by FredM
On a iPhone app, I need to send a jpg by mail with a maximum size of 300Ko (I don't no the maximum size mail.app can have, but it's another problem). To do that, I'm trying to decrease quality until obtain an image under 300Ko. In order to obtain the good value of the quality (compressionLevel) who give me a jpg under 300Ko, I have made the following loop. It's working, but each time time the loop is executed, the memory increase of the size of the original size of my jpg (700Ko) despite the "[tmpImage release];". float compressionLevel = 1.0f; int size = 300001; while (size 300000) { UIImage *tmpImage =[[UIImage alloc] initWithContentsOfFile:[self fullDocumentsPathForTheFile:@"countOpix_imageToAnalyse.jpg"]]; size = [UIImageJPEGRepresentation(tmpImage, compressionLevel) length]; [tmpImage release]; //In the following line, the 0.001f decrement is choose just in order test the increase of the memory //compressionLevel = compressionLevel - 0.001f; NSLog(@"Compression: %f",compressionLevel); } Any ideas about how can i get it off, or why it happens? thanks

• Python progression path - From apprentice to guru

- by Morlock
Hi all, I've been learning, working, and playing with Python for a year and a half now. As a biologist slowly making the turn to bio-informatics, this language has been a the very core of all the major contributions I have made in the lab. (bash and R scripts have helped some too. My C++ capabilities are very not functional yet). I more or less fell in love with the way Python permits me to express beautiful solutions and also with the semantics of the language that allows such a natural flow from thoughts to workable code. What I would like to know from you is your answer to a kind of question I have seldom seen in this or other forums. Let me sum up what I do NOT want to ask first ;) I don't want to know how to QUICKLY learn Python Nor do I want to find out the best way to get acquainted with the language Finally, I don't want to know a 'one trick that does it all' approach. What I do want to know your opinion about, is: What are the steps YOU would recommend to a Python journeyman, from apprenticeship to guru status (feel free to stop wherever your expertise dictates it), in order that one IMPROVES CONSTANTLY, becoming a better and better Python coder, one step at a time. The kind of answers I would enjoy (but feel free to surprise the readership :P ), is formatted more or less like this: Read this (eg: python tutorial), pay attention to that kind of details Code for so manytime/problems/lines of code Then, read this (eg: this or that book), but this time, pay attention to this Tackle a few real-life problems Then, proceed to reading Y. Be sure to grasp these concepts Code for X time Come back to such and such basics or move further to... (you get the point :) This process depicts an iterative Learn/Code cycle, and I really care about knowing your opinion on what exactly one should pay attention to, at various stages, in order to progress CONSTANTLY (with due efforts, of course). If you come from a specific field of expertise, discuss the path you see as appropriate in this field. Thanks a lot for sharing your opinions and good Python coding!

• Tiff Analyzer

- by Kevin
I am writing a program to convert some data, mainly a bunch of Tiff images. Some of the Tiffs seems to have a minor problem with them. They show up fine in some viewers (Irfanview, client's old system) but not in others (Client's new system, Window's picture and fax viewer). I have manually looked at the binary data and all the tags seem ok. Can anyone recommend an app that can analyze it and tell me what, if anything, is wrong with it? Also, for clarity sake, I'm only converting the data about the images which is stored seperately in a database and copying the images, I'm not editting the images myself, so I'm pretty sure I'm not messing them up. • cpptask ordering of static libraries in gcc command line

- by AC
How do I force cpptask to move the static libraries to the end on arg list issued to the compiler? Here is the clause I am using <cpptasks:cc description="appname" subsystem="console" objdir="obj" outfile="dist/app_test"> <compiler refid="testsslcc" /> <linkerarg value="-L${libdir}" /> <linkerarg value="-L/usr/local/devl/lib" /> <linkerarg value="-Wl,-rpath,../lib" /> <libset libs="unittest ${libs} dsg readline ncurses gcov" /> <fileset dir="test/obj" includes="main.o" /> <fileset dir="." includes="${TCFILES}" /> <fileset dir="../lib" includes="libboost_thread.a libboost_date_time.a" /> </cpptasks:cc> when this executes, libboost_thread.a libboost_date_time.a are first files in the argument list passed the compiler, gcc -ggdb -Wl,-export-dynamic -Wshadow -Wno-format-y2k ../../lib/libboost_date_time.a ../../lib/libboost_thread.a x.cpp ... which causes compiler error. By manually moving them to the end of the argument list, the application compiles without error. gcc -ggdb -Wl,-export-dynamic -Wshadow -Wno-format-y2k x.cpp ... ../../lib/libboost_date_time.a ../../lib/libboost_thread.a And yes I have tried changing the order in the xml, and that of course didn't work. For now I am using an exec task to call gcc with the files in the correct order but this of course is a hack.

• c# opennetCF background worker - e.result gives a ObjectDisposedException

- by ikky
Hi! I'm new working with background worker in C#. Here is a class, and under it, you will find the instansiation of it, and under there i will define my problem for you: I have the class Drawing: class Drawing { BackgroundWorker bgWorker; ProgressBar progressBar; Panel panelHolder; public Drawing(ref ProgressBar pgbar, ref Panel panelBig) // Progressbar and panelBig as reference { this.panelHolder = panelBig; this.progressBar = pgbar; bgWorker = new BackgroundWorker(); bgWorker.WorkerReportsProgress = true; bgWorker.WorkerSupportsCancellation = true; bgWorker.DoWork += new OpenNETCF.ComponentModel.DoWorkEventHandler(this.bgWorker_DoWork); bgWorker.RunWorkerCompleted += new OpenNETCF.ComponentModel.RunWorkerCompletedEventHandler(this.bgWorker_RunWorkerCompleted); bgWorker.ProgressChanged += new OpenNETCF.ComponentModel.ProgressChangedEventHandler(this.bgWorker_ProgressChanged); } public void createDrawing() { bgWorker.RunWorkerAsync(); } private void bgWorker_DoWork(object sender, DoWorkEventArgs e) { Panel panelContainer = new Panel(); // Adding panels to the panelContainer for(i=0; i<100; i++) { Panel panelSubpanel = new Panel(); // Setting size, color, name etc.... panelContainer.Controls.Add(panelSubpanel); // Adding the subpanel to the panelContainer //Report the progress bgWorker.ReportProgress(0, i); // Reporting number of panels loaded } e.Result = imagePanel; // Send the result(a panel with lots of subpanels) as an argument } private void bgWorker_ProgressChanged(object sender, ProgressChangedEventArgs e) { this.progressBar.Value = (int)e.UserState; this.progressBar.Update(); } private void bgWorker_RunWorkerCompleted(object sender, RunWorkerCompletedEventArgs e) { if (e.Error == null) { this.panelHolder = (Panel)e.Result; } else { MessageBox.Show("An error occured, please try again"); } } } Instansiating an object of this class: public partial class Draw: Form { public Draw() { ProgressBar progressBarLoading = new ProgressBar(); // Set lots of properties on progressBarLoading Panel panelBigPanelContainer = new Panel(); Drawing drawer = new Drawing(ref progressBarLoading, ref panelBigPanelContainer); drawer.createDrawing(); // this makes the object start a new thread, loading all the panels into a panel container, while also sending the progress to this progressbar. } } Here is my problem: In the private void bgWorker_RunWorkerCompleted(object sender, RunWorkerCompletedEventArgs e) i don't get the e.Result as it should be. When i debug and look at the e.Result, the panel's properties have this exception message: '((System.Windows.Forms.Control)(e.Result)).ClientSize' threw an exception of type 'System.ObjectDisposedException' So the object gets disposed, but "why" is my question, and how can i fix this? I hope someone will answer me, this is making me crazy. Another question i have: Is it allowed to use "ref" with arguments? is it bad programming? Thanks in advance. I have also written how i understand the Background worker below here: This is what i think is the "rules" for background workers: bgWorker.RunWorkerAsync(); => starts a new thread. bgWorker_DoWork cannot reach the main thread without delegates - private void bgWorker_DoWork(object sender, DoWorkEventArgs e) { // The work happens here, this is a thread that is not reachable by the main thread e.Result => This is an argument which can be reached by bgWorker_RunWorkerCompleted() bgWorker.ReportProgress(progressVar); => Reports the progress to the bgWorker_ProgressChanged() } - private void bgWorker_ProgressChanged(object sender, ProgressChangedEventArgs e) { // I get the progress here, and can do stuff to the main thread from here (e.g update a control) this.ProgressBar.Value = e.ProgressPercentage; } - private void bgWorker_RunWorkerCompleted(object sender, RunWorkerCompletedEventArgs e) { // This is where the thread is completed. // Here i can get e.Result from the bgWorker thread // From here i can reach controls in my main thread, and use e.Result in my main thread if (e.Error == null) { this.panelTileHolder = (Panel)e.Result; } else { MessageBox.Show("There was an error"); } }

• Feature element repeatedly added with every feature activation/deactivation

- by ccomet
This is a very minor behavior when compared with the entire scope, but it is one that I'd like to put a stop to. I have created a very, very simple SharePoint Feature. It has two elements in its manifest: an aspx webpart page, and an elements xml. I'll paraphrase my elements xml, which just adds a module, below. <Elements xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/sharepoint/"> <Module Name="Pass" Url="" Path=""> <File Url="pasq.aspx" NavBarHome="True" Type="Ghostable"> <AllUsersWebPart WebPartZoneID="Left" WebPartOrder="0"> WARGH THIS PART DOESN'T MATTER FOR THIS QUESTION! </AllUsersWebPart> </File> </Module> </Elements> Now, on the first time I deploy and activate this feature, it works properly. But if I have to deactivate and then reactivate the feature in order to fix some properties in the webpart, then I find myself with a second webpart on the page. Naturally, each similar cycle will just add more and more. I understand that a new webpart must be created in order to employ the changes I just made, but why is the old webpart still on the page? Can I make this older webpart go away automatically as part of the feature activation/deactivation process without needing to employ a Receiver class?

• cascading combo box causing empty fields in next record

- by glinch
Hi there, I'm having problems with a cascading combo box. Everything works fine with the combo boxes and the values get populated correctly. Private Sub cmbAdjComp_AfterUpdate() Me.cboAdjOff.RowSource = "SELECT AdjusterCompanyOffice.ID, AdjusterCompanyOffice.Address1, AdjusterCompanyOffice.Address2, AdjusterCompanyOffice.Address3, AdjusterCompanyOffice.Address4, AdjusterCompanyOffice.Address5 FROM" & _ " AdjusterCompanyOffice WHERE AdjusterCompanyOffice.AdjCompID = " & Me.cmbAdjComp.Column(1) & _ " ORDER BY AdjusterCompanyOffice.Address1" Me.cboAdjOff = Me.cboAdjOff.ItemData(0) End Sub The secondary combo box has a row source query: SELECT AdjusterCompanyOffice.ID, AdjusterCompanyOffice.Address1, AdjusterCompanyOffice.Address2, AdjusterCompanyOffice.Address3, AdjusterCompanyOffice.Address4, AdjusterCompanyOffice.Address5 FROM AdjusterCompanyOffice ORDER BY AdjusterCompanyOffice.Address1; Both comboboxes have the same controlsource. Everything works fine and dandy moving between records and the boxes show the correct fields for each record. When i use the first combo box, and then select the appropriate option in the second combo box, everything works great on the specific record. However when I move to the next record, the values in the second combo box are all empty. If i close the form and reopen it, and avoid using the cascading combo boxes all the values are all correct when i move between records. Somehow using the cascading combo boxes creates a conflict with the row source of the secondary combo box. Hope that is clear! Have been rummaging around for an answer but cant find anything. any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Noel

• JavaScript variable to ColdFusion variable

- by Alexander
I have a tricky one. By means of a <cfoutput query="…"> I list some records in the page from a SQL Server database. By the end of each line viewing I try to add this in to a record in a MySQL database. As you see is simple, because I can use the exact variables from the output query in to my new INSERT INTO statement. BUT: the rsPick.name comes from a database with a different character set and the only way to get it right into my new database is to read it from the web page and not from the value came in the output query. So I read this value with that little JavaScript I made and put it in the myValue variable and then I want ColdFusion to read that variable in order to place it in my SQL statement. <cfoutput query="rsPick">

#rsPick.ABBREVIATION#

#rsPick.name#

#rsPick.Composition#

Transaction done...
<cfquery datasource="#Request.Order#"> INSERT INTO products (iniid, abbreviation, clsid, cllid, dfsid, dflid, szsid, szlid, gross, retail, netvaluebc, composition, name) VALUES ( #rsPick.ID#, '#rsPick.ABBREVIATION#', #rsPick.CLSID#, #rsPick.CLLID#, #rsPick.DFSID#, #rsPick.DFLID#, #rsPick.SZSID#, #rsPick.SZLID#, #rsPick.GROSSPRICE#, #rsPick.RETAILPRICE#, #rsPick.NETVALUEBC#, '#rsPick.COMPOSITION#','#MYVALUE#' ) </cfquery>
</cfoutput>

• Re-ordering child nodes in django-MPTT

- by Dominic Rodger
I'm using Ben Firshman's fork of django-MPTT (hat tip to Daniel Roseman for the recommendation). I've got stuck trying to re-order nodes which share a common parent. I've got a list of primary keys, like this: ids = [5, 9, 7, 3] All of these nodes have a parent, say with primary key 1. At present, these nodes are ordered [5, 3, 9, 7], how can I re-order them to [5, 9, 7, 3]? I've tried something like this: last_m = MyModel.get(pk = ids.pop(0)) last_m.move_to(last_m.parent, position='first-child') for id in ids: m = MyModel.get(pk = id) m.move_to(last_m, position='right') Which I'd expect to do what I want, per the docs on move_to, but it doesn't seem to change anything. Sometimes it seems to move the first item in ids to be the first child of its parent, sometimes it doesn't. Am I right in my reading of the docs for move_to that calling move_to on a node n with position=right and a target which is a sibling of n will move n to immediately after the target? It's possible I've screwed up my models table in trying to figure this out, so maybe the code above is actually right. It's also possible there's a much more elegant way of doing this (perhaps one that doesn't involve O(n) selects and O(n) updates). Have I misunderstood something? Bonus question: is there a way of forcing django-MPTT to rebuild lft and rght values for all instances of a given model?

• cakephp paginate using mysql SQL_CALC_FOUND_ROWS

- by michael
I'm trying to make Cakephp paginate take advantage of the SQL_CALC_FOUND_ROWS feature in mysql to return a count of total rows while using LIMIT. Hopefully, this can eliminate the double query of paginateCount(), then paginate(). http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/information-functions.html#function_found-rows I've put this in my app_model.php, and it basically works, but it could be done better. Can someone help me figure out how to override paginate/paginateCount so it executes only 1 SQL stmt? /** * Overridden paginateCount method, to using SQL_CALC_FOUND_ROWS */ public function paginateCount($conditions = null, $recursive = 0, $extra = array()) { $options = array_merge(compact('conditions', 'recursive'), $extra); $options['fields'] = "SQL_CALC_FOUND_ROWS `{$this->alias}`.*"; Q: how do you get the SAME limit value used in paginate()? $options['limit'] = 1; // ideally, should return same rows as in paginate() Q: can we somehow get the query results to paginate directly, without the extra query? $cache_results_from_paginateCount = $this->find('all', $options); /* * note: we must run the query to get the count, but it will be cached for multiple paginates, so add comment to query */ $found_rows = $this->query("/* do not cache for {$this->alias} */ SELECT FOUND_ROWS();"); $count = array_shift($found_rows[0][0]); return $count; } /** * Overridden paginate method */ public function paginate($conditions, $fields, $order, $limit, $page = 1, $recursive = null, $extra = array()) { $options = array_merge(compact('conditions', 'fields', 'order', 'limit', 'page', 'recursive'), $extra); Q: can we somehow get $cache_results_for_paginate directly from paginateCount()? return $cache_results_from_paginateCount; // paginate in only 1 SQL stmt return $this->find('all', $options); // ideally, we could skip this call entirely }

• Powershell: Select-Object with additional calculated difference value

- by David.Chu.ca
Let me explain my question. I have a daily report about one PC's free space as in text file (sp.txt) like: DateTime FreeSpace(MB) ----- ------------- 03/01/2010 100.43 DateTime FreeSpace(MB) ----- ------------- 03/02/2010 98.31 .... Then I need to use this file as input to generate a report with difference of free space between dates: DateTime FreeSpace(MB) Change ----- ------------- ------ 03/01/2010 100.43 03/02/2010 98.31 2.12 .... Here are some codes I have to get above result without the additional "Change" calculation: Get-Content "C:\report\sp.txt" ` | where {$_.trim().length -gt 0 -and -not ($_ -like "Date*") -and -not ($_ -like "---*")} ` | Select-Object @{Name='DateTime'; expression={[DateTime]::Parse($_.SubString(0, 10).Trim())}}, ` @{Name='FreeSpace(MB)'; expression={$_.SubString(12, 12).Trim()}}, ` | Sort-Object DateTime ` | Select-Object DateTime, 'FreeSpace(MB)' |ft -AutoSize # how to add additional column Change to this Select-Object? My understanding is that Select-Object will return a collection of objects. Here I create this collection from an input text file(parse each line into parts: datetime and freespace(MB)). In order to calculate the difference between dates, I guess that I need to add additional calculated value to the result of the last Select-Object, or pipe the result to another Select-Object with the calculation as additional property or column. In order to do it, I need to get the previous row's FreeSpace value. Not sure if it is possible and how?

• ASP.NET MVC2: Client-side validation not working with Start.js

- by Shaggy13spe
Ok, this is strange. I would hope it's something I'm doing wrong and not that MS has two technologies that simply don't work together. (UPDATE: See bottom of post for Script tag order in HEAD section) I'm trying to use the dataView template and client-side validation. If I include a reference to: by itself, the dataview template works fine. but if I put in the following references: then I get the following error: > Error: Type._registerScript is not a > function Source File: > http://ajax.microsoft.com/ajax/beta/0911/MicrosoftAjaxTemplates.js > Line: 1 and: > Error: Sys.get("$listings") is null > Source File: > http://localhost:12370/Listings Line: > 76 Here's the code calling the dataview: $(document).ready(function () { LoadMap(); Sys.require([Sys.components.dataView, Sys.scripts.jQuery], function() { $("#listings").dataView(); Sys.get("$listings").set_data(listings.Data); updateMap(listings.Data); }); }); I would really appreciate any help with this one. Thanks! UPDATE: I've tried moving around the order of the last 4 script tags, but to no avail.

• Will HttpResponse.Filter buffer the whole data before start the sending?

- by vtortola
Hi, An user posts this article about how to use HttpResponse.Filter to compress large amounts of data. But what will happen if I try to transfer a 4G file? will it load the whole file in memory in order to compress it? or otherwise it will compress it chunk by chunk? I mean, I'm doing this right now: public void GetFile(HttpResponse response) { String fileName = "example.iso"; response.ClearHeaders(); response.ClearContent(); response.ContentType = "application/octet-stream"; response.AppendHeader("Content-Disposition", "attachment; filename=" + fileName); response.AppendHeader("Content-Length", new FileInfo(fileName).Length.ToString()); using (FileStream fs = new FileStream(Path.Combine(HttpContext.Current.Server.MapPath("~/App_Data"), fileName), FileMode.Open)) using (DeflateStream ds = new DeflateStream(fs,CompressionMode.Compress)) { Byte[] buffer = new Byte[4096]; Int32 readed = 0; while ((readed = ds.Read(buffer, 0, buffer.Length)) > 0) { response.OutputStream.Write(buffer, 0, readed); response.Flush(); } } } So at the same time I'm reading, I'm compressing and sending it. Then I wanna know if HttpResponse do the same thing, or otherwise it will load the whole file in memory in order to compress it. Cheers.

• That assembly does not allow partially trusted callers although the zone is fully trusted.

- by Frederik Gheysels
Since yesterday, I receive a security exception when I want to run a unit-test from within VS.NET 2008. The error goes like this: SecurityException: that assembly does not allow partially trusted callers ... The assembly that failed was : file:///S:/MyProject/MyAssembly.dll The S: drive is a mapped drive which points to a physical location on my disk. What I find very strange, is that this used to work for months previously. I mean, I did this all the time. In order to get this to work, I 've created a new security zone with the caspol utility in order to give this S: network share drive FullTrust. In other words, when I run caspol -m -lg I see this (I removed the other zones for the sake of brevity): 1.2. Zone - Intranet: LocalIntranet 1.2.1. All code: Same site Web 1.2.2. All code: Same directory FileIO - 'Read, PathDiscovery' 1.2.3. Url - file://R:/*: FullTrust 1.2.4. Url - file://S:/*: FullTrust 1.2.5. Url - file:///S:/*: FullTrust I've added the 1.2.5 zone just recently because the error that was given, mentionned file:///s:/.... Any ideas ? Could it be that this has something to do with the installation of VS.NET 2010 or the .NET Framework version 4.0 ?

• Design patter to keep track UITableView rows correspondance to underlying data in constant time.

- by DenNukem
When my model changes I want to animate changes in UITableView by inserting/deleting rows. For that I need to know the ordinal of the given row (so I can construct NSIndexPath), which I find hard to do in better-than-linear time. For example, consider that I have a list of addressbook entries which are manualy sorted by the user, i.e. there is no ordering "key" that represents the sort order. There is also a corresponding UITableView that shows one row per addressbook entry. When UITableView queries the datasource I query the NSMUtableArray populated with my entries and return required data in constant time for each row. However, if there is a change in underlying model I am getting a notification "Joe Smith, id#123 has been removed". Now I have a dilemma. A naive approach would be to scan the array, determine the index at which Joe Smith is and then ask UITableView to remove that precise row from the view, also removing it form the array. However, the scan will take linear time to finish. Now I could have an NSDictionary which allows me to find Joe Smith in constant time, but that doesn't do me a lot of good because I still need to find his ordinal index within the array in order to instruct UITableView to remove that row, which is again a linear search. I could further decide to store each object's ordinal inside the object itself to make it constant, but it will become outdated after first such update as all subsequent index values will have changed due to removal of an object. So what is the correct design pattern to accurately reflect model changes in the UITableView in costant (or at least logarithmic) time?
