  • How to change default user (ubuntu) via CloudInit on AWS

    - by Gui Ambros
I'm using CloudInit to automate the startup of my instances on AWS. I followed the (scarce) documentation available at http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~cloud-init-dev/cloud-init/trunk/annotate/head%3A/doc/examples/cloud-config.txt and examples on /usr/share/doc/cloud-init, but still haven't figured out how to change the default username (ubuntu, id:1000). I know I can create a script to manually delete the default ubuntu and add my user, but seems counter intuitive given that CloudInit exist exactly to automate the initial setup. Any ideas?

  • Perl Script in background

    - by himz
I have a perl script i made to automatically telnet into different servers . but its interface is only command line. To make it more user friendly for general windows users , i need to make GUI for it . My idea is to make GUI in a language like VB,java ,etc and let that call perl script . my script will run in background in a command prompt and whatever the result it displays back in GUI. Got some success. GUI in vb ,I run an instance of CMD in background ,run perl script in that .But that is wer program fails .As perl script runs in a thread for perl , i only get the output when script completes(rather say when it timeout). i need a mechanism where i can interact with the perl script , take output of script and show to user , then take input from user and so on . Please can you all suggest me some way to actually make this happen. PS: No limitation on using any language for GUI (as core work is done by perl script,GUI only there to give appropriate commands to script) Thanks in advance

  • Python3 and ftplib uploading files

    - by Teifion
My python2 script uploads files nicely using this method but python3 is presenting problems and I'm stuck as to where to go next (googling hasn't helped). from ftplib import FTP ftp = FTP(ftp_host, ftp_user, ftp_pass) ftp.storbinary('STOR myfile.txt', open('myfile.txt')) The error I get is Traceback (most recent call last): File "/Library/WebServer/CGI-Executables/rob3/functions/cli_f.py", line 12, in upload ftp.storlines('STOR myfile.txt', open('myfile.txt')) File "/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/3.1/lib/python3.1/ftplib.py", line 454, in storbinary conn.sendall(buf) TypeError: must be bytes or buffer, not str I tried altering the code to from ftplib import FTP ftp = FTP(ftp_host, ftp_user, ftp_pass) ftp.storbinary('STOR myfile.txt'.encode('utf-8'), open('myfile.txt')) But instead I got this Traceback (most recent call last): File "/Library/WebServer/CGI-Executables/rob3/functions/cli_f.py", line 12, in upload ftp.storbinary('STOR myfile.txt'.encode('utf-8'), open('myfile.txt')) File "/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/3.1/lib/python3.1/ftplib.py", line 450, in storbinary conn = self.transfercmd(cmd) File "/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/3.1/lib/python3.1/ftplib.py", line 358, in transfercmd return self.ntransfercmd(cmd, rest)[0] File "/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/3.1/lib/python3.1/ftplib.py", line 329, in ntransfercmd resp = self.sendcmd(cmd) File "/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/3.1/lib/python3.1/ftplib.py", line 244, in sendcmd self.putcmd(cmd) File "/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/3.1/lib/python3.1/ftplib.py", line 179, in putcmd self.putline(line) File "/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/3.1/lib/python3.1/ftplib.py", line 172, in putline line = line + CRLF TypeError: can't concat bytes to str Can anybody point me in the right direction

  • Install h5py in Mac OS X 10.6.3

    - by zyq524
I'm trying to install h5py in Mac OS X 10.6.3. First I installed HDF5 1.8, which used the following commands: ./configure \ --prefix=/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/Current \ --enable-shared \ --enable-production \ --enable-threadsafe \ CPPFLAGS=-I/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/Current/include \ LDFLAGS=-L/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/Current/lib make make check sudo make install Then install h5py: /Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/Current/bin/python \ setup.py \ build \ --api=18 \ --hdf5=/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/Current Then I got the errors: Configure: Autodetecting HDF5 settings... Custom HDF5 dir: /Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/Current Custom API level: (1, 8) ld: warning: in detect/vers.o, file was built for unsupported file format which is not the architecture being linked (i386) ld: warning: in /Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/Current/lib/libhdf5.dylib, file was built for unsupported file format which is not the architecture being linked (i386) Undefined symbols: "_main", referenced from: start in crt1.10.5.o ld: symbol(s) not found collect2: ld returned 1 exit status Failed to compile HDF5 test program. Please check to make sure: * You have a C compiler installed * A development version of Python is installed (including header files) * A development version of HDF5 is installed (including header files) * If HDF5 is not in a default location, supply the argument --hdf5=<path> error: command 'cc' failed with exit status 1 I just updated my Xcode, I don't know whether this is because my gcc's default setting. If so, how can I get rid of this error? Thanks.

  • Programmatically configure MATLAB

    - by Richie Cotton
Since MathWorks release a new version of MATLAB every six months, it's a bit of hassle having to set up the latest version each time. What I'd like is an automatic way of configuring MATLAB, to save wasting time on administrative hassle. The sorts of things I usually do when I get a new version are: Add commonly used directories to the path. Create some toolbar shortcuts. Change some GUI preferences. The first task is easy to accomplish programmatically with addpath and savepath. The next two are not so simple. Details of shortcuts are stored in the file 'shortcuts.xml' in the folder given by prefdir. My best idea so far is to use one of the XML toolboxes in the MATLAB Central File Exchange to read in this file, add some shortcut details and write them back to file. This seems like quite a lot of effort, and that usually means I've missed an existing utility function. Is there an easier way of (programmatically) adding shortcuts? Changing the GUI preferences seems even trickier. preferences just opens the GUI preference editor (equivalent to File - Preferences); setpref doesn't seems to cover GUI options. The GUI preferences are stored in matlab.prf (again in prefdir); this time in traditional name=value config style. I could try overwriting values in this directly, but it isn't always clear what each line does, or how much the names differ between releases, or how broken MATLAB will be if this file contains dodgy values. I realise that this is a long shot, but are the contents of matlab.prf documented anywhere? Or is there a better way of configuring the GUI? For extra credit, how do you set up your copy of MATLAB? Are there any other tweaks I've missed, that it is possible to alter via a script?

  • WPF app startup problems

    - by Dave
My brain is all over the map trying to fully understand Unity right now. So I decided to just dive in and start adding it in a branch to see where it takes me. Surprisingly enough (or maybe not), I am stuck just getting my darn Application to load properly. It seems like the right way to do this is to override OnStartup in App.cs. I've removed my StartupUri from App.xaml so it doesn't create my GUI XAML. My App.cs now looks something like this: public partial class App : Application { private IUnityContainer container { get; set; } protected override void OnStartup(StartupEventArgs e) { container = new UnityContainer(); GUI gui = new GUI(); gui.Show(); } protected override void OnExit(ExitEventArgs e) { container.Dispose(); base.OnExit(e); } } The problem is that nothing happens when I start the app! I put a breakpoint at the container assignment, and it never gets hit. What am I missing? App.xaml is currently set to ApplicationDefinition, but I'd expect this to work because some sample Unity + WPF code I'm looking at (from Codeplex) does the exact same thing, except that it works! I've also started the app by single-stepping, and it eventually hits the first line in App.xaml. When I step into this line, that's when the app just starts "running", but I don't see anything (and my breakpoint isn't hit). If I do the exact same thing in the sample application, stepping into App.xaml puts me right into OnStartup, which is what I'd expect to happen. Argh! Is it a Bad Thing to just put the Unity construction in my GUI's Window_Loaded event handler? Does it really need to be at the App level?

  • Interrupting a thread from inside a runnable class? (java)

    - by kyeana
I am trying to set up a method inside a class that implements the runnable interface that will set the interrupt status of that class. The reason i want to be able to do it from inside the class is there is some other clean up stuff that i need to take care of as well, and i would like to be able to do it all by calling one method instead of calling, for example: Gui gui = new Gui() // class that implements runnable Thread guiThread = new Thread(gui, "gui thread"); guiThread.start() ... ... guiThread.interrupt(); gui.cancel(); Currently my cancel code looks like this, however it isn't correctly setting the interrupt status of this thread. public void cancel() { Thread.currentThread().interrupt(); // other clean up code here. } Any advice on if/how i could get this working? Thanks. EDIT: I when i tried to get the cancel working, i commented out the guiThread.interrupt(), so that i wasn't just setting the status the reseting the status.

  • Snow Leopard & Ruby on Rails - SQLite3 issue

    - by spin-docta
I just upgraded to snow leopard. Before, I had everything running fine, but now when I start the server from the terminal I get: => Booting WEBrick => Rails 2.3.3 application starting on http://0.0.0.0:3000 => Call with -d to detach => Ctrl-C to shutdown server [2009-08-28 23:18:19] INFO WEBrick 1.3.1 [2009-08-28 23:18:19] INFO ruby 1.8.7 (2008-08-11) [universal-darwin10.0] [2009-08-28 23:18:19] INFO WEBrick::HTTPServer#start: pid=845 port=3000 Then when I got to generated page, it seems like it isn't working with sqlite3. • Unable To Install SQL Server 2008 On Windows 7 & Windows XP

    - by mickburkejnr
Hi Guys, you are my final hope of salvation! For the last five hours I've been trying to install SQL Server 2008, first on Windows 7 and then Windows XP. Both have had the same issue. Even before the installation starts, an error message appears saying: Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 installation has failed. SQL Server 2008 Setup requires .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 to be installed. I have installed everything in the hope of getting past this. the service pack it refers to has even been installed and I can see them in the control panel! I have installed Framework 2.0, Framework 2.0 SP1, Framework 3.5, Framework 3.5 SP1, Windows Installer 3.5 and Windows Installer 4.0. Even installed the Service Pack for SQL Server 2008.... But, nothing, works! Does anyone have an idea what I'm doing wrong or what could be wrong? I'm seriously close to the end of my tether, I've even sent Steve Ballmer an email with my frustration. I would seriously appreciate some help with this. Many thanks!

  • VMWare workstation: from command line, how to start a VM in service mode (run in background)?

    - by GenEric35
Hi, I have tried the vmrun and vmware.exe executables, but both of them start the vmware GUI when starting the VM. What I want to do is start the VM without starting the VMWare GUI. The reason I am doing this is after a few hours of idle, the guest OS becomes sluggish. It has lots of RAM but the only way I found to keep it's responsiveness optimal is to shutdown(dumps the memory) and the start; a restart of the guest OS doesnt dump the memory so I need to be able to do a stop of the VM, and then a start. So far the command I use are: C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware Workstationvmrun stop F:\VirtualMachines\R2\R2.vmx C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware Workstationvmrun start F:\VirtualMachines\R2\R2.vmx But the start command actually starts the VMWare Workstation GUI, which I don't need. I'm looking for a solution to start the VM without the VMWare Wokstation GUI, or a solution to what is causing the VM to become sluggish after a few hours of running idle.

  • Best ASP.NET E-Commerce Framework (aspDotNetStoreFront, AbleCommerce, BVCommerce, MediaChase,...)

    - by EfficionDave
I need a full-featured asp.net E-Commerce solution for a project. It needs to be easily extensible as I need to extend it to integrate with a custom Flash based personalization engine. It should also have a great administrative back-end that handles inventory tracking, report, labels, shipping, ... so that the client can really use it as the basis for their business. I've used quite a few different E-Commerce systems including OSCommerce, Zen Cart, Catalook, and eTailer. While I was impressed with Zen Cart and eTailer, this project is big enough that I want to try a more serious, commercial offering. I'm particularly interested in thoughts on aspdotnetstorefront, BVCommerce, AbleCommerce, and MediaChase. [UPDATE] I've done quite a bit of evaluation since I posted this question and will give some of my findings below: BVCommerce - The price point is nice, the product seems fairly well regarded, and I've heard good things about customizing/extending it, it just doesn't seem like it's going to meet my needs as an Top Tier ECommerce solution. After viewing the tutorial videos, the Admin interface just seems too basic and outdated. aspDotNetStorefront - The integration with DotNetNuke was it's biggest selling point for me but after reading peoples opinions, it's integration seems quite weak. It's sounds like there's a significant learning curve and the architecture just doesn't sound like it's as clean as it should be. AbleCommerce - After a rather thorough evaluation, I have selected AbleCommerce for at least my next project. The Admin interface is beautiful and has a nice list of features. The E-Commerce portion of the user side is very well done, highly skin-able (using Master Pages and a couple other techniques), and the checkout workflow has all the features I need while still being very clean. Source to the API can be bought for $500 but you generally won't need it. There are some 3rd party modules available but there's not currently a large market for these. The biggest glaring weakness of AbleCommerce I've found is their CMS capabilities are very limited and not at all well suited for a non-technical user to make most site content updates. But I have a good solution for that that I plan adapting into AbleCommerce. They will automatically generate a site for you to play with to your heart's content for 30 days. It is defniitely worth checking out.

  • ADO Entity Framework 4 to WPF Datagrid. DatagridComboBox nightmare.

    - by Jason
The WPF datagrid -seems- like it's going to work, but the combobox implementation does not work straight from the designer. So I'm left wandering around in the XAML randomly changing things trying to get it to work. The problems are numerous. I want to display a foreign key relationship (with drop down) instead of a bunch of numbers for a selection. It seems like it shouldn't be this hard. I can get the right values to show up (their description instead of an ID), but the table freaks out thinking that all the values have been modified. If I select a drop down, it refuses to allow me to edit anything else. I want to chalk this up as a .NET bug, but since I'm new to WPF datagrids, it's probably just me. Here is the code. <DataGridComboBoxColumn Header="Make Up" ItemsSource="{Binding Source={StaticResource materialMakeUpTypesViewSource}}" DisplayMemberPath="Description" TextBinding="{Binding Path=MaterialMakeUpType.Description}" SelectedItemBinding="{Binding Path=MaterialMakeUpType.Description}" SelectedValueBinding="{Binding Path=MaterialMakeUpType.ID}" />

  • Selenium Webdriver (FirefoxDriver)

    - by Samareri
Hey all, I'm using Selenium Webdriver to do some robottesting. Since some functions appear to only work in Firefox, I'm obligated to use Firefoxdriver. Now and then, something weird happens. Starting up te driver driver = new FirefoxDriver(); driver.get(URL); gets firefox to startup but not to go to the specified url. The strange thing is that it works on another computer with the same preferences set in Firefox. I solved this problem once by changing to another version of firefox, but this time this doesn't do the trick for me, it did however worked for the other developers. Yes, the error started for all developers on the same time, same day... My first question is: is it a firefox problem or Webdriver problem. Second question: how is it possible that it works on other pc's? Any help would be very appreciated Thanks Error: org.openqa.selenium.WebDriverException: Could not parse "". • Help me choose a CSS framework: 960 vs Blueprint vs ???

    - by Christian Perry
I've been looking at different CSS frameworks. The two major players seem to be 960.gs and Blueprint. My question is simple: what are the pros and cons to each, and which do you recommend? And are there other frameworks that I should consider instead? Putting my question into context, I'm the designer on a site that's similar to StackOverflow, but with a general audience focus, rather than a specific technical one.

  • What version of the .NET framework ahould I target?

    - by MiffTheFox
I'm a desktop C# developer (that is not ASP) and am wondering about version targeting for small personal projects. These are, of course, trying to reach as wide an audience as possible, and so I've been targeting .NET 3.0 (which is the latest version on a Windows Vista system without any service packs) and 2.0 (which is simply the most compatible version compatible with VS2008). Unfortunately, this precludes me from learning any technologies such as LINQ introduced post 3.0, and, with an upcoming switch to VS2010, I'm wondering if I should target the new 4.0 platform at the expense of uses without the latest and greatest, or should I just stick to trying to reach as wide a userbase as possible?

  • Asynchronous pages in the ASP.NET framework - where are the other threads and how is it reattached?

    - by rkrauter
Sorry for this dumb question on Asynchronous operations. This is how I understand it. IIS has a limited set of worker threads waiting for requests. If one request is a long running operation, it will block that thread. This leads to fewer threads to serve requests. Way to fix this - use asynchronous pages. When a request comes in, the main worker thread is freed and this other thread is created in some other place. The main thread is thus able to serve other requests. When the request completes on this other thread, another thread is picked from the main thread pool and the response is sent back to the client. 1) Where are these other threads located? 2) IF ASP.NET likes creating new threads, why not increase the number of threads in the main worker pool - they are all running on the same machine anyway? 3) If the main thread hands off a request to this other thread, why does the request not get disconnected? It magically hands off the request to another worker thread somewhere else and when the long running process completes, it picks a thread from the main worker pool and sends response to the client. I am amazed...but how does that work?
