  • Bash script for mysql backup - error handling

    - by Jure1873
I'm trying to backup a bunch of MyISAM tables in a way that would allow me to rsync/rdiff the backup directory to a remote location. I've came up with a script that dumps only the recently changed tables and sets the date of the file so that rsync can pick up only the changed ones, but now I don't know how to do the error handling - I would like the script to exit with a non 0 value if there are errors. How could I do that? #/bin/bash BKPDIR="/var/backups/db-mysql" mkdir -p $BKPDIR ERRORS=0 FIELDS="TABLE_SCHEMA, TABLE_NAME, UPDATE_TIME" W_COND="UPDATE_TIME >= DATE_ADD(CURDATE(), INTERVAL -2 DAY) AND TABLE_SCHEMA<>'information_schema'" mysql --skip-column-names -e "SELECT $FIELDS FROM information_schema.tables WHERE $W_COND;" | while read db table tstamp; do echo "DB: $db: TABLE: $table: ($tstamp)" mysqldump $db $table | gzip > $BKPDIR/$db-$table.sql.gz touch -d "$tstamp" $BKPDIR/$db-$table.sql.gz done exit $ERRORS

  • Making Python scripts more user friendly?

    - by Michael Morisy
I have a bunch of python scripts I've put together that cut down on busy work, but I'd like to be able to share them in an easier-to-use format for others to be used internally. The scripts aren't accessing anything local, just open API's across a couple web apps. Ideally: a) Users wouldn't have to have a python compiler installed b) They can be using Windows when running it. c) It's simple enough they can just click something, and it will work. I've tried some of the Windows Python executable compilers, but none have really worked well and I was considering just uploading it to a webserver and putting up some basic password access protection around it Any suggestions for sharing scripts?

  • Active Directory Script: DSMOVE failed

    - by Malnizzle
DSQUERY user -inactive 4 | DSMOVE -newparent <distinguished name of target OU> Running this script and getting "dsmove failed (user) is an unknown parameter". If I run the dsquery w/o the dsmove, it cleanly pulls a list for me. If I run with just one account, it works as well. Thoughts?

  • Command does not execute in crontab while command itself works just fine

    - by fuzzybee
I have this script from Colin Johnson on Github - https://github.com/colinbjohnson/aws-missing-tools/tree/master/ec2-automate-backup It seems great. I have modified it to send email to myself every time an EBS snapshot is created or deleted. The following works like a charm ec2-automate-backup.sh -v "vol-myvolumeid" -k 3 However, it does not execute at all as part of my crontab (I didn't receive any emails) #some command that got commented out */5 * * * * ec2-automate-backup.sh -v "vol-fb2fbcdf" -k 3; * * * * * date /root/logs/crontab.log; */5 * * * * date /root/logs/crontab2.log Please note that the 2nd and 3rd execute just fines as I can see the date and time in log files. What could I have missed here? The full ec2-automate-backup.sh is as follows: #!/bin/bash - # Author: Colin Johnson / [email protected] # Date: 2012-09-24 # Version 0.1 # License Type: GNU GENERAL PUBLIC LICENSE, Version 3 # #confirms that executables required for succesful script execution are available prerequisite_check() { for prerequisite in basename ec2-create-snapshot ec2-create-tags ec2-describe-snapshots ec2-delete-snapshot date do #use of "hash" chosen as it is a shell builtin and will add programs to hash table, possibly speeding execution. • Howto switch / chage user id witin a bash script to execute commands in the same script?

    - by a1an
Is there a way to switch user identity within a script (executed as root as part of an installation process) to execute some commands without calling an external sctipt, then be back to root to run other commands? Sort of: #!/bin/bash some commands as root SWITCH_USER_TO user some commands as user including environment variables checks, without calling an external script SWITCH_USER_BACK some other stuff as root, maybe another user id change...

  • Solaris to Linux conversion: Use VxFS or GFS?

    - by w00t
We're a Solaris shop looking at RedHat Enterprise Linux and one of the things we're wondering is if we should keep Veritas Volume Manager + FileSystem or go with LVM+ext3 or RedHat's preferred cluster filesystem solution, GFS. One of the things we like about Veritas is that it can use Veritas Volume Replicator to have a remote copy of important filesystems. This functionality seems to be missing from RedHat, DRBD doesn't seem to be packaged in RHEL... So my questions are: Does anybody use VxFS/VxVM/VVR on Linux? Thoughts, experiences? Comparison with LVM+ext3? Anybody using GFS? Thoughts, experiences? Do you do remote replication for disaster recovery, and if so, how? Is there a standard RedHat way?

  • Script to list current user's mapped network drives

    - by Dmart
I have a Windows XP/ Server 2003 environment here users have mapped different network drives themselves using arbitrary drive letters. Some of these users do not know how to tell the true UNC path of these drives, and I would like to be able to run a script or program to query those drives and show me the drive letters and the corresponding UNC paths. I would like to see output like "net use" in that user's context so that I can see what drives THEY have mapped. I would need to do this using my own admin account, which is where the difficulty lies. I understand this information would be stored in the HKCU registry? I would love to be able to do this in Powershell, but a vbscript or even a standalone executable would do. Thanks.

  • Unable to specify parameters to cvlc in a script

    - by VxJasonxV
I'm creating a script that issues a few curl commands in order to access a time-protected mms stream link, then set up a relay using cvlc (vlc's command line interface) for my own use on an unencumbered player. The curl aspect of this is working, as I can run as a browser and curl side by side and get the same access url. (It's time locked meaning the stream will work forever, but you have to connect quickly or the URL will time out.) The very end of the script prints the command I will run, which is then followed up by "exec $CMD". When I echo $CMD I get: cvlc --sout '#standard{access=http,mux=asf,dst=0.0.0.0:58194}' mms://[...] Manually Copy/Pasting this command in, verbatim, works perfectly fine, but as part of a script, the cvlc execution output says: [0x9743d0] main interface error: no suitable interface module [0x962120] main libvlc error: interface "globalhotkeys, none" initialization failed [0x9743d0] dummy interface: using the dummy interface module... Why is --sout behaving one way in a script (non-interactive shell?) vs. another way in the foreground (interactive shell) ?

  • Server setup scripts, patches and migrations

    - by Ben Swinburne
I have written some scripts which I use to configure various servers in a uniform way. Each time I deploy a server I run the relevant scripts so that I know they're all configured the same. I then have some patch scripts, which are changes to the originals which I can then run to ensure that modifications to the original set up can be run on each server. E.g. disable.sh - Disable SELinux etc to ensure other scripts all run correctly general.sh - Jailkit, AV, Repos, RKHunter, security tweaks, uninstall unused bits etc web.sh - Installs and configures Apache2 001_update_nr_licence_key.sh - Update a licence key for a piece of software which has changed since its install in general.sh I can run the first 3 without a problem, but when it comes to running patches I am a bit stuck. Is there a sensible way of doing these with some software? My current thought is write to a log file the role of the server be it web or db for example and then note the name of the patch which has run. It could then iterate through a folder to find all patches for that role which it has not yet run and execute them. This seems a bit long winded however. Could someone advise me as to the best way I can keep my servers uniform?

I have to concatenate a number of files in a directory structure which contains spaces in the folder names looking like this: ./CH 0000100014/A10/11XT/11xt#001.csv find . -name "*.csv" -type f -print0 | xargs -0 cat > allmycsv.txt does the job, however now I need to include the information contained in the path, i.e. CH 0000100014/A10/11XT as a header of each inputfile to cat. find . -name "*.csv" -type f -print0 | xargs -0 -I % sh -c 'echo %; cat %' >allmycsv.txt would do the job, if I had no spaces in the path, but in my case, cat does not get along with the space in the path name. Is there a way out? Cheers, E P.S. I am working on bash on OSX

  • trap "" HUP v.s Nohup ? How can I run a portion of shell script in nohub mode?

    - by Alex
I want to run a shell script over the weekend, but I wanna make sure if the terminal loses the connection, my script won't be terminated. I use nohup for the whole script invokation, but I also want to execute some portion of my shell script in a way that if someone closes my terminal, my script runs on the background still. Here is a simple example : #!/bin/bash echo "Start the trap" trap " " HUP echo "Sleeping for 60 Seconds" sleep 60 echo "I just woke up!" Please suggest what I should do ? The trap " " HUP seems like not working when I close my terminal tab.

  • GRUB Error after Deleting Linux Partition

    - by Nironan12
I was dual-booting with Windows 7 and Windows Vista each taking up half of my hard drive. In Windows 7 I used Easeus Partition Manager to shrink my Windows 7 volume 8GB. On the unallocated space, I installed Linux Mint 8 RC1. After a little bit of playing around with it, I booted in Windows 7, used EPM again and deleted the 8GB Linux partition. I then extended Windows 7 on the 8GB. After restarting my computer, all I get is a black screen and this: GRUB loading. error: no such partition grub rescue> I do not have a Windows 7 disk nor does my computer come with Startup Repair. What do I do?

  • Need to get a list of all users within a subnet of servers

    - by mikedopp
I am looking to write a batch or vbs script to gather all users (local to the server. ie. administrators or a local account(not ad users)) on a collection of servers inside my network. I assume I could do this by subnet. Could even put the server names into a csv text file for the script to read from and report back to. Lots to ask. I would use net user however I run into local access only. Ideas? Or too many security walls to work?

  • How to add a variable into a grep command

    - by twigg
I'm running the following grep command var=`grep -n "keyword" /var/www/test/testfile.txt` This work just as expected but I need to insert the file name dynamically from a loop like so: var=`grep -n "keyword" /var/www/test/`basename ${hd[$i]}`.txt` But obviously the use of ` brakes this with a unexpected EOF while looking for matching ``' and unexpected end of file Any ideas of away around this?

  • compare the contents of two folders that are replicating by dfs

    - by Funky Si
I have a large folder that I am replicating by dfs and I want to check that all files have been replicated correctly. Currently I am running the following script at both ends. cd e:\data\shared\ dir /a:-h /b /s > e:\data\shared\result.txt and then using a text editor to tidy the file before using a diff tool to compare them. Does anyone know a better way of doing this? Failing that does anyone know how to adapt my script to ignore all the files in the DfsrPrivate folders

  • Running a shell script in *nix

    - by Ben
Bit of a newb using *nix (I'm actually using a bash shell in OS X 10.5) and I wondered what the probably very simple answer is to this... When I write a script (called, say, my_script) and I've saved it to the current directory, why do I have to put a period and a forward slash in front of its name to run it? Like this: ./my_script Can't the shell tell that I want to run it from the current directory? Windows seems to handle that situation. Cheers Ben
