Scraping html WITHOUT uniquie identifiers using python

I would like to design an algorithm using python that scrapes thousands of pages like this one and this one, gathers all the data and inserts it into a MySQL database. The script will be run on a weekly or bi-weekly basis to update the database of any new information added to each individual page. Ideally I would like a scraper that is easy to work with for table structured data but also data that does not have unique identifiers (ie. id and classes attributes). Which scraper add-on should I use? BeautifulSoup, Scrapy or Mechanize? Are there any particular tutorials/books I should be looking at for this desired result? In the long-run I will be implementing a mobile app that works with all this data through querying the database.

Internet Explore works very slowly executing JS code

There is a page that uses PHP to fetch search results from Google Search API and then it puts the results on the page some funny way in a circle. Code and may look crappy but seems that it works more or less fine in Firefox. When you enter a search query and click submit button or Next/Previous links, it fills the wheel with results. The problem is its work in IE. It works there very slowly and then it doesn't clear the wheel before filling in new data, but puts it over that. My friend asked me to help him with this code. Please give me a piece of advice how I can fix it. Thanks so much!

WordPress theme blog not displaying well in FireFox-how to fix?

Hi I have recently made a new WordPress theme (named {cssgroundup}) which I am using on my blog at www.richard-dickinson.com It is only a basic WP theme for my personal use as I am quite new to the WordPress platform (?). It is a work in progress (as is the blog content!) however it displays alright in IE browser but not so well in FireFox. Can someone help me edit it so it displays properly in most browsers or advise me how I can fix this please? I have asked for help at wordpress.org forums but haven't yet had any help! I can post stylesheet code & theme.php code here if required. I look forward to helpful replies, many thanks

Is there a standardized (Meta?) Tag for the Date of a Website?

One thing that search engines really suck with is the date when a website was created. You know the problem: You search for some CSS or JavaScript problem and Google returns a ton of results from 2002 explaining how to fix the problem in IE 5.5 and Netscape 4.6 while the helpful articles are buried on Page 3. There is only one use for Page 3, and meaningful search results are not it. Anyway, I just wonder if there is a standardized or at least generally accepted tag or meta tag that I can put on my own pages to indicate the date they were created? Not that it helps filtering out the old crap out of search results (especially since the people at #1 with their 2002 articles have zero incentive to change), but I'd just like to do my part :P

I have a div which I am using as a footer to display some content. I have put the style as: .pageFooter{ position:absolute; bottom:0px; width:100%; height:25px; background:#e6e6e6; } This style works well when there is not content in the body of page. But when I populate the page with content, say datagrid, the div is overlaps data in datagrid. What changes should I make to the style to let the div be at the bottom always. I am using IE* to view the pages.

CSS: Centering a floated block level element in IE6 (It almost works)

I have a block level element which I am centering on the page. I have gotten it to work for all other browsers except IE6 where it ALMOST works. http://tinyurl.com/28sh9eq If I view the page in IE6 the red box is slightly off center of the pink one in IE. If I then resize the browser window it snaps into place where I want it. Uhhhhh.... yea.... what gives? How come resizing the window makes it work? Devise role based routing

I have an app with multiple users. Each user as a theoretical role (user, client, etc). I've designed a view/controller for each user type. I want to be able to login each type of user do a different root url and lock them to it. Originally I was going to add a column to Users in Devise called role and so I can differentiate the users. The problem I'm having is how to say in routes.rb if current_user.role == "client" root :to = 'controller#index' Once they are logged in to the page I also want to keep them from being able to visit any of my other paths ie: domain.com/calls domain.com/units I've been looking into cancan to run alongside Devise but I'm not sure if this is the answer.

Avoid Flickering in Windows Forms?

Double buffering not working with combo-box. is there any another methods to avoid flickering in windows forms? i have one windows form with number of panels in it. I'm showing only one panel at a time based on my menu selection. i have one icon panel,one header panel and the combo box. based on the selected item of that combo-box the gridview1 and 2 are filling. when I'm rapidly selecting the combo-box item using my keyboard down arrow the icon panel and the header panel are always repainting. i need to keep that both without any change. this two panels producing some flashing effect(ie,they are blinking or flashing) while I'm changing the combo box selected index. is there any way to avoid this flashing.? i tried double-buffered enabled in form constructor and form load event. Please Help..............

Detecting file upload size on the client side?

I'm using PHP for file uploads. In the PHP manual it shows an example using a MAX_FILE_SIZE hidden field, saying that it will detect on the client side (i.e. the browser) whether the file is too large or not. I've just tried the example in Firefox, Chrome and IE and it doesn't work. The file is always uploaded, even if it is way larger than the specified hidden field. Incidentally, if the file is larger than MAX_FILE_SIZE then calling move_uploaded_file doesn't work, so it seems the variable is having an effect server-side, but not client-side.

Hi I'm currently using yahoo map service to display a static image of a location with the latitude and longitude that I suppiled, and this work fine. But I was just wondering if it possible to send an url request to the service that will return an image with multiple markers on the image? (ie. more than one locations marked). I have the following code which does a couple of webpage redirections and then clicks an tag which has a javascript fuction as the href. When it is called a file is download. My problem is I want to be able to download the file without being prompted to cancel, save or open. Erlang Question - Time order of messages

Read (skimmed enough to get coding) through Erlang Programming and Programming Erlang. One question, which is as simple as it sounds: If you have a process Pid1 on machine m1 and a billion million messages are sent to Pid1, are messages handled in parallel by that process (I get the impression no) and(answered below) is there any guarantee of order when processing messages? ie. Received in order sent? If so, how is clock skew handled in high traffic situations for ordering? Coming from the whole C/Thread pools/Shared State background ... I want to get this concrete. I understand distributing an application, but want to ensure the 'raw bones' are what I expect before building processes and distributing workload. Also, am I right in thinking the whole world is currently flicking through Erlang texts ;)

Why is there a margin at the top of my browser?

I have a web page that is displays differently in Firefox and Safari (IE testing yet to come). The page displays as expected in Safari, but there is a 50px margin between the body and the HTML that I can't determine what is causing it. Here is the CSS for the body: body { font-size: 13px; line-height: 1.333em; background: #f6eaae url(../_images/parchment-big.jpg) no-repeat center top; font-family: "Lucida Grande", Lucida, Verdana, sans-serif; color: #323232; } I would really appreciate some assistance in finding what is causing this difference. Ideally the Firefox version is better because it gives that extra breathing room at the top. Thanks.

C++ boost thread id and Singleton

hi. Sorry to flood so many questions this week. I assume thread index returned by thread.get_id is implementation specific. In case of the pthreads, is index reused? IE, if thread 0 runs and joins, is thread launched afterwords going to have a different ID? the reason I ask this is a need to implement Singleton pattern with a twist: each thread gets its own instance. I know it sounds very crazy, but threads control hardware (cuda) which does not permit device memory sharing. What is a good way to implement such pattern?

How to list all items in custom taxonomy with a permanlink in Wordpress

Hi, Not sure how to word this. I've set up a type in Wordpress called Products. I also have two taxonomies linked to Products called Brands and Categories. When you create a product you can set to which Brand and Category the product belong to. It works perfectly when using the type as permalink to list everything within a type http://sitename.com/products but I can't seem to get the taxonomies working in the same way, ie. list all the items within a taxonomy (like an archive, I suppose): http://sitename.com/brands http://sitename.com/categories Is this possible, and if so, what could I possibly be doing wrong? I would try and set up some rewrite rules in functions.php, but I don't know what the query string looks like if you want to list items in a taxonomy, and if this is even possible. If it helps, I'm using the plugins More Types and Ultimate Taxonomy Manager to create the types and taxonomies.

What is the role of asserts in C++ programs that have unit tests?

Greetings, I've been adding unit tests to some legacy C++ code, and I've run into many scenarios where an assert inside a function will get tripped during a unit test run. A common idiom that I've run across is functions that take pointer arguments and immediately assert if the argument is NULL. I could easily get around this by disabling asserts when I'm unit testing. But I'm starting to wonder if unit tests are supposed to alleviate the need for runtime asserts. Is this a correct assessment? Are unit tests supposed to replace runtime asserts by happening sooner in the pipeline (ie: the error is caught in a failing test instead of when the program is running). On the other hand, I don't like adding soft fails to code (eg: if(param == NULL) return false;). A runtime assert at least makes it easier to debug a problem in case a unit test missed a bug. Prevent auto scrolling when clicking tab anchor

On my page I have some tabs that I've added some javascript so when they're clicked the page loads the tab's anchor URL instead of simply changing the view with AJAX, but I now want to stop the browser from auto scrolling to the anchor location. Having done some research, I'm pretty sure I just need to add a couple of lines so that when clicked it returns false or prevents default but, being a noob, I've no idea where to put them!?! Hyperlink (a href) with a pound sign at the end doesn't do anything in Firefox

I have a link that is somewhat like this: <a href="------.html#video">Text</a> It works fine in IE but not in Firefox. In Firefox it shows the new URL on the address bar but doesn't update or change anything in terms of content. Somehow the "#" is causing Firefox to ignore updating the page. I tried using Javascript "window.location" and "window.location.href" and all sorts of other things but it still doesn't work. Does anyone have any idea how to fix it? Thanks!

Hello, I am maintaining a classic asp website that uses cookies throughout. We have had some issues where users are losing these cookies after they close the browser. I have verified in IE and Firefox that the cookie expires when the session does. The issue is that I have a extent the life of the cookie with the following Response.Cookies("foocookie").Expires = dateadd("d",1,now) What am I doing wrong? How to implement a book preview (2 page spread) without using Flash?

I'm looking into a solution for work, where you have a two page spread of the book to preview. Either side of this, you can hover in the corner to create a pseudo-flip and then click the mouse button to actually turn the page. I know there is many Flash solutions out there, but in this case we cannot use it... So we are looking for a possible solution that can work across all major browsers (yes, including IE6)... I looked a few canvas solutions, but with Google's canvas extension for IE, these will terribly slow. So was thinking about an SVG/VML solution, like Raphael Javascript library. This could be good, but then trying to look into how to code this, without examples, could be a challenge with the time constraint. Is there a solution out there that fits (or almost fits) this problem?

TabContainer in BorderContainer not showing correctly

Hi, I am using a borderContainer with a fix width and centering in the center of my page (Use of a div around the bordercontainer). Everything works fine until i add a TabContainer. All of a sudden i can not see my Tab's anymore. This goes as wel for IE as FF. Is this a bug or something else? How could i work around this? I'm using the latest release of dojo 1.4.3. I've tried using borderContainer in borderContainer with no result. Thnx Stefaan

How do I ensure data consistency in this concurrent situation?

The problem is this: I have multiple competing threads (100+) that need to access one database table Each thread will pass a String name - where that name exists in the table, the database should return the id for the row, where the name doesn't already exist, the name should be inserted and the id returned. There can only ever be one instance of name in the database - ie. name must be unique How do I ensure that thread one doesn't insert name1 at the same time as thread two also tries to insert name1? In other words, how do I guarantee the uniqueness of name in a concurrent environment? This also needs to be as efficient as possible - this has the potential to be a serious bottleneck. I am using MySQL and Java. Thanks
