• Used DBAN to wipe Lenovo u410 then installed Ubuntu. Need to install windows 8, but I get an error.

  When I try to boot from my windows 8 USB (tested on a separate PC), I get this error text "The boot configuration data for your pc is missing or contains errors." I want to install windows again so I can fix a battery issue I'm having. Lenovo's power management app has an option to keep the battery at 60% if the laptop stays plugged in most of the time. I enabled this, then formatted without changing it back. I think there might be a raid setup that I may need to remove or something. I don't mind removing Ubuntu and starting fresh. I would just love some help with all this, I'm a noob when it comes to Linux.

From what I've learned so far in OOP is that if I want different behaviors from an object via methods, I should use different method names that best indicate the behavior, so why should I bother with method overloading in the first place?

• Increase traffic to a site through a site on subdomain [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Subdomain versus subdirectory We have two sites, one is mainly a portfolio site (built with Yii framework) and the other is a digital shop (built with open cart) where we sell plugins and themes. The url's look like www.mydomian.com and www.store.mydomain.com. But of these sites are in the same server. We use google analytics tools and have no problem getting traffic to our store. But we have very little to our portfolio site and we want to increase our Google ranking for this site. Assuming increased traffic to our site will increase our google ranking, we were thinking to use URl masking so the link will be www.mydomain.com/shop and this will load www.store.mydomain.com. Will this count as hits for our portfolio site? Because the .htaccess rules will ensure the subdomain is served. So I dont know if these hits will count on our store or our portfolio site...

  My website has an SSL cert (example url: https://subdomain.example.com). Under Apache it's set up for both port 80 and port 443. So under the following configuration, anyone who goes to http://subdomain.example.com is sent to https://subdomain.example.com . But for visits from Internet Explorer, the redirect doesn't happen. Instead, http visits get a "Internet Explorer cannot display the web page." with a list of client-side solutions to try. Any ideas on how to fix the config so IE visits have the same behavior as the other browsers (that is, send http to https automatically)?   I have dnsmasq running as a dns server with a number of linux boxes using static ips that run several virtual hosts on subdomains. I currently have the following address line in my dnsmasq.conf to map the subdomain of a boxes address to the boxes static ip: address=/.devbox1.mydomain.com/192.168.1.3 address=/.devbox2.mydomain.com/192.168.1.4 e.g. site1.devbox1.mydomain.com > maps to devbox1 static ip, site1 virtual host site2.devbox1.mydomain.com > maps to devbox1 static ip, site2 virtual host site3.devbox2.mydomain.com > maps to devbox2 static ip, site3 virtual host I was wondering if I can change the machines over to DHCP addresses (instead of static) and have dnsmasq use the dhcp ip instead of the static one? Can I modify the address line to refer to the DHCP address (obviously, I cant hardcode the address)? I know I could add mac address to ip allocation, but I want to avoid this if possible.

• Canonicals with differing content

  Interesting conundrum here with canonicals. Lets say I have a site with a "verified" system where other websites can become so and so "verified". Their url to send people to to confirm verification is something like "blah.com/verify/company1" and "blah.com/verify/company2". But logically "blah.com/verify" itself is not verifying anyone in particular, so it redirects to the signup form to get verified, at "blah.com/verify/register" As far as the actual companies registered, I figure it doesn't make sense to index every individual url with only the tiny difference of which company name it's saying yay or nay to being verified, so canonicals could come in handy on those pages to condense the indexing. Yet making "blah.com/verify" the canonical "hub" doesn't work well because it's a signup form, not a verification page, so technically has quite different content from the various verification pages themselves. But at the same time it's a bit unfair to choose 1 company to point all the canonical benefits too to use that as the "hub", yet a bit wasteful to have google index every individual verification page and spread out all that linkjuice. Basically, I'm just looking for advice, what's best for this from a search engine standpoint?

• Incomplete upgrade 12.04 to 12.10

  Everything was running smoothly. Everything had been downloaded from Internet, packages had been installed and a prompt asked for some obsolete programs/files to be removed or kept. After that the computer crashed and and to manually force a shutdown. I turned it on again and surprise I was on 12.10! Still the upgrade was not finished! How can I properly finish that upgrade? • Interfaces and Virtuals Everywhere????

  First a disclaimer; this post is about micro-optimization of C# programs and does not apply to most common scenarios - but when it does, it is important to know. Many developers are in the habit of declaring member virtual to allow for future expansion or using interface based designs1. Few of these developers think about what the runtime performance impact of this decision is. A simple test will show that this decision can have a serious impact. For our purposes, we used a simple loop to time the execution of 1 billion calls to both non-virtual and virtual implementations of a method that took no parameters and had a void return type: Direct Call:     1.5uS Virtual Call:   13.0uS The overhead of the call increased by nearly an order of magnitude! Once again, it is important to realize that if the method does anything of significance then this ratio drops quite quickly. If the method does just 1mS of work, then the differential only accounts for a 1% decrease in performance. Additionally the method in question must be called thousands of times in order to produce a meaqsurable impact at the application level. Yet let us consider a situation such as the per-pixel processing of a graphics processing application. Here we may have a method which is called millions of times and even the slightest increase in overhead can have significant ramification. In this case using either explicit virtuals or interface based constructs is likely to be a mistake. In conclusion, good design principles should always be the driving force behind descisions such as these; but remember that these decisions do not come for free.   1) When a concrete class member implements an interface it does not need to be explicitly marked as virtual (unless, of course, it is to be overriden in a derived concerete class). Nevertheless, when accessed via the interface it behaves exactly as if it had been marked as virtual.

  Say that you want to start a new project (I'm talking about a serious project — e.g if you had an idea that seems good and profitable — not about something you start just to learn a new technology or just for your enjoyment) but you don't feel like you can do it alone since, for example, you lack the experience or the technical skills to go through all the phases needed to go from the idea to the final product. Say also that you don't simply want to hire someone. You want someone who can be as passionate as you in the job, that is “proficient” in and enthusiast of the same technologies as you are and that possibly has a background similar to yours (e.g. you both are students, you both come from a prestigious univerity or just you're both Star Trek nerds). So, basically you don't want a person to tell what to do (e.g. “implement this and that, slave!”) but someone who can be inspiring and bring something new and important to your project. • Lost Traffic from Google Because of Meta-tag Adding

  I have a site aroundnails.com. It has English version on subdomain en.aroundnails.com. Reading about language related meta-tags for Google, I have placed such a meta tag on the main page of main site: <link rel="alternate" hreflang="en" href="http://en.aroundnails.com/" /> By this way I have tried to say Google, that my site on en.aroundnails.com is the english version of main site, not a duplicate. After a fortnight I have lost a huge part of traffic from Google, more than a half. At the beginning of September I have moved this meta-tag, but traffic remained at the same level. Hope somebody can help me to solve this issue.

• External table and preprocessor for loading LOBs

  I was using the COLUMN TRANSFORMS syntax to load LOBs into Oracle using the Oracle external which is a handy way of doing several stuff - from loading LOBs from the filesystem to having constants as fields. In OWB you can use unbound external tables to define an external table using your own arbitrary access parameters - I blogged a while back on this for doing preprocessing before it was added into OWB 11gR2. For loading LOBs using the COLUMN TRANSFORMS syntax have a read through this post on loading CLOB, BLOB or any LOB, the files to load can be specified as a field that is a filename field, the content of this file will be the LOB data. So using the example from the linked post, you can define the columns; Then define the access parameters - if you go the unbound external table route you can can put whatever you want in here (your external table get out of jail free card); This will let you read the LOB files fromn the filesystem and use the external table in a mapping. Pushing the envelope a little further I then thought about marrying together the preprocessor with the COLUMN TRANSFORMS, this would have let me have a shell script for example as the preprocessor which listed the contents of a directory and let me read the files as LOBs via an external table. Unfortunately that doesn't quote work - there is now a bug/enhancement logged, so one day maybe. So I'm afraid my blog title was a little bit of a teaser....

• Isis Finally Rolls Out

  Google has rolled their wallet out for several chains; I see the NFC readers in Walgreen's when I'm sent their for milk.  But Isis has been relatively quiet until now.  As of last week they have finally launched in their two test cities: Austin, and Salt Lake City.  Below are the supported carriers and phones as of now, but more phones will be added later. To start using Isis, you have to take your NFC-capable phone to your carrier's store to get the SIM replaced with a more sophisticated one that has a secure element configured for Isis.  The "secure element" is the cryptographic logic that secures mobile payments.  Carriers like the secure element in the SIM while non-carriers (like Google) prefer the secure element in the phone's electronics. (I'm not entirely sure if you could support both Isis and Google Wallet on the same phone.  Anybody know?) Then you can download the Isis app from Google Play and load your cards.  Most credit cards are supported, and there's a process to verify the credit cards are valid.  Then you can select from the list of participating retailers to "follow."  Selecting a retailer allows that retailer to give you offers via the app. The app is well done and easy to use.  You can select a default payment type and also switch between them easily.  When the phone is tapped on the reader, there are two exchanges of information.  The payment information is transferred, and then the Isis "SmartTap" information which includes optional loyalty number and digital coupons.  Of course the value of mobile wallets comes from the ease of handling all three data types (i.e. payment, loyalty, offers).   One of the nice things about SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) is that you can highlight a table name in a script and press Alt + F1 to perform sp_help on it. Unfortunately I've never been able to use that feature as the majority of the tables in our product belong to a schema other than dbo.    On a long train journey back to York I wondered if I could solve this problem by writing my own replacement for sp_help (which I’ve called sp_help_table_schemas).  My version works by first checking the system tables to find out which schemas the table belongs to SELECT s.Name   --Find the schema FROM sys.schemas s  JOIN sys.tables t on t.schema_id = s.schema_id  WHERE t.name = 'Orders'It then dynamically calls the standard sp_help method but this time supplying the table owner as well.SET @cmd = 'EXEC sp_help ''' + QUOTENAME(@SchemaName) + '.' + QUOTENAME(@ObjectName) + ''' ;' ;           EXEC ( @cmd )Once I had proved the basics worked I wrapped it up into a stored procedure and deployed it to the master database on my laptop.  It was then just a question of going into Tools à Options within SSMS and defining the keyboard short cutA couple of notes You can’t amend the existing Alt+F1 entry to I went with Ctrl+F1.  You need to open new query window for the change to be picked upSo I can now highlight a table name and press Ctrl+F1 The completed script is attached.   Thanks go to Martin Bell who reviewed my stored procedure and give some valuable advice.

• After suspend, my monitor wont turn back on

  I set my pc to suspend after 5 minutes of inactivity, when I return to my computer I mash a couple of keys and the pc turns back on and the drives start spinning etc etc, but I get no signal to either of my monitors. My peripherals are powered as the num/caps lock lights turn on and off. I should add I have two monitors, I have the same problem on both. As I am writing the last line from my previous paragraph keeps disappearing. I press control z and it comes back but kinda weird. Thanks in advance for any help :)

• Mysterious subdomains to my site indexed by Google

  Stackers, We have an issue with strange subdomains pointing to (pages on) our site such as: www2.example.com 2.example.com anothersite.com.example.com A few things are perplexing: who created them? why they do that? why Google index them and made them appear in the search results when clicking them gets a 5xx error. how can we get rid of them? It seems some type of scams that hurt our site's free search and experience. Anyone had similar experience and knows the answers? Really appreciate it!

• C# creating a simple snake game

  I was thinking about creating a snake game with C#, so I ran ideas in my head, and some problems came up. How can I track and output in the correct location the blocks that run after the snake's head? If the snake is built of five blocks, and the user starts going in a circle, how can I print the snake body in the right location? Also, how can I create an action that will run on the background, which will move the snake forward, no matter what the user does? What structure should my code have? (code design structure) This should be a console application, since it's the only framework I am familiar with. I am not looking for finished code, since I want to really understand how it should work.

• OWB 11gR2 &ndash; OMB and File Editing

  Here we will see how we can use the IDE for editing OMB scripts. The 11gR2 release is based on the common Oracle platform IDE used also by JDeveloper. It comes with a bunch of standard behavior for editing and rendering code. One of the lesser known things is that if you drop a text file into OWB you can edit it. So you can drop your tcl scripts right into OWB and edit in-place, and don’t need another IDE like Eclipse just for this task. Cool, so you have the file here. There may be no line numbers, you can toggle line numbers on by right clicking in the gutter. If we edit the file within the OWB IDE, the save is a little different from normal. OWB doesn’t normally manipulate files so things like ctrl-s to save, saves the OWB objects, but if you edit a file the closing of the file will ask if you want to save it – check it out. Now we enter the realm of ‘he who dares’…. Note the IDE doesn’t know about tcl files out of the box, so you see above there is no syntax highlighting. The code is identified by the extension… .java is java, .html is HTML etc. With OWB, the OMB scripts are tcl, we usually have .tcl extension on these files. One of the things we can do to trick up the syntax highlighting is to simply rename the file to have a .java suffix, then all of a sudden we get syntax highlighting, see the illustration here where side by side we see a the file with a .java extension and a .tcl extension. Not ideal pretending to be .java but gets us a way to having something more useful than notepad. We can then change the syntax highlighting such that we get Eclipse like highlighting within the IDE from the Tools Preferences option; You then get the Eclipse like rendering albeit using a little tweak on the file names… Might be useful if you are doing any kind of heavy duty OMB script development and just want a single IDE. The OMBPlus panel is then at hand for executing and testing it out.

The redirects that are working now look something like this: Redirect 301 /installer_1.0.0.zip http://www.example.com/download/installer_1.0.3.zip Redirect 301 /installer_1.0.1.zip http://www.example.com/download/installer_1.0.3.zip Redirect 301 /installer_1.0.2.zip http://www.example.com/download/installer_1.0.3.zip I would like to use a regex instead of having multiple lines for each version I need to redirect. I have tried these options with no success: Redirect 301 /installer_(.*).zip http://www.example.com/download/installer_1.0.3.zip Redirect 301 /installer_([0-9+]\.[0-9+]\.[0-9+]).zip http://www.example.com/download/installer_1.0.3.zip Should these work or am I doing something wrong? • SharePoint 2010 Single Page Apps without a Master Page

  Originally posted on: http://geekswithblogs.net/djacobus/archive/2014/06/06/156827.aspxWell, maybe a stretch, but I am inclined to believe it is so.  I have been using  the JavaScript Client Object Model (JCSOM) for about 6 months now and I believe it can do about 80% of my job quickly without much fanfare.  When building sites in SharePoint no one wants the OOTB list views, etc. They want a custom look and feel!  I used to think in previous engagements that this would mean some custom server code or at least a data-form web part.   Since coming on-board in my current engagement, I have been forced because we don’t own the hosting site to come up with innovative ways to customize the UI of SharePoint.  We can push content via sandbox solutions and use JCSOM from within SharePoint Designer to do almost all customizations.  I have been using the following methodology to accomplish this: 1. Create an HTML file, which links CSS and JavaScript Files 2. Create and ASPX Web Part Page, Include a Content Editor Web Part and link to the HTML page created above.   So basically once it was done, I could copy , paste,  and rename those 4 items: CC, JS, HTML. ASPX and using MVVM just change the Model, View, and View-Model in the JavaScript file.  in about 5 minutes, I could create a completely new web part with SharePoint data.  Styling would take a little longer.  Some issues that would crop up: 1.  Multiple(s) of these web parts would not work well together on the same page (context). 2.  To separate the Web parts and context I would create a separate page for each web part and link them to a tabs layout via a Page Viewer web part or I frame.  Easy to do and not a problem but a big load problem as these web part pages even with minimal master had huge footprints.  (master page and page web part zones)   I kept thinking of my experience with SharePoint 2013 and apps!  The JavaScript was loaded from within the app, why can’t we do that in 2010 and skip the master page and web part zones.
