  • Revision, Quadratic Time

    - by stan
I am not sure if you can post revision programming questions in here but i am stuck with some algorithms revision If an algorithm is quadratic it takes time proportional to the number of n^2 ? So if the slides say its almost 1/2 the square of n records is this the same as saying (n^2 * 0.5) Thanks

  • parallel sorting methods

    - by davit-datuashvili
in book algorithm in c++ by robert sedgewick there is such kind of problem how many parallel steps would be required to sort n records that are distributed on some k disks(let say k=1000 or any value ) and using some m processors the same m can be 100 or arbitrary number i have questions what we should do in such case? what are methods to solve such kind of problems? and what is answer in this case?

  • grid traversal question

    - by Kensay
Given a grid of any height and width, write an algorithm to traverse it in a spiral. (Starting at the top left and ending in the middle) without passing over previously visited nodes. Without using nested loops.

  • Get spiral index from location

    - by ricick
I'm using Alberto Santini's solution to this question to get a spiral grid reference based on an items index Algorithm for iterating over an outward spiral on a discrete 2D grid from the origin It's not the accepted solution, but it's the best for my needs as it avoids using a loop. It's working well, but what I want now is to do the inverse. Based on a known x and y coordinate return the index of a location. This is as a precursor to returning the items surrounding a given location.

  • How to detect a image texture?

    - by Ole Jak
So we have a photo like this How to detect that a red wall has a white figure painted on it and that that white figure is a texture and than how to cut that wall from the picture? I need an algorithm for performing such operation programaticly (not by hand)

  • Estimating the size of a tree

    - by Full Decent
    I'd like to estimate the number of leaves in a large tree structure for which I can't visit every node exhaustively. Is this algorithm appropriate? Does it have a name? Also, please pedant if I am using any terms improperly. sum_trials = 0 num_trials = 0 WHILE time_is_not_up bits = 0 ptr = tree.root WHILE count(ptr.children) > 0 bits += log2(count(ptr.children)) ptr = ptr.children[rand()%count(ptr.children)] sum_trials += bits num_trials++ estimated_tree_size = 2^(sum_trials/num_trials)

  • Else without if

    - by user2808951
I'm trying to write a code for my computer programming class for a project due Monday, and I'm pretty new to Java, but I'm trying to write a program that will first determine if a number the user inputs is even or odd and then determine if the number is prime or not. I'm not sure if I did the algorithm right or not, so if anyone has any corrections on the program to my algorithm or anything else please say so, but my real issue is that the program is refusing to compile. Every time I try, it says it's having an else without if problem. Here's a link to my command box: http://s1341.photobucket.com/user/Emi_Nightshade/media/Capture_zps45f9a2ea.png.html Here's my code: import java.io.*; import java.util.*; public class Lesson9p1_ThuotteEmily { public static void main(String args[]) { Scanner kbReader0=new Scanner(System.in); System.out.print("\n\nPlease enter an integer. An integer is whole number, and it can be either negative or positive. Please enter your number: "); long num=kbReader0.nextLong(); if(num%2==0) //if and else with braces { System.out.println("Your integer " + num + " is even."); } else { System.out.println("Your integer " + num + " is odd."); } Scanner kbReader1=new Scanner(System.in); System.out.print("\n\nWould you like to know if your number is prime? Please enter yes or no: "); String yn=kbReader1.nextLine(); if(yn.equals.IgnoreCase("Yes")) { System.out.println("Okay. Give me a moment."); { if(num%2==0) { System.out.println("Your number isn't prime."); } else if(num==2) { System.out.println("Your number is 2, which is the only even prime number in existence. Cool, right?"); } for(int i=3;i*i<=n;i+=2) { if(n%1==0) { System.out.println("Your number isn't prime."); } } else { System.out.println("Your number is prime!"); } } } if(yn.equals.IgnoreCase("No")) { System.out.println("Okay."); } } } If anyone could help me out with this and also any problems I may have made elsewhere in the program, I'd be very grateful! Thanks.

  • Google Chrome appears to hijack default browser

    - by Russsell Feldman
I read all the advice on how to make Firefox or IE for windows 7 the default browser. I know how to do this but the problem is whenever a program tries to open a page through the default browser it will default to Google Chrome and when I uninstalled Google Chrome then programs like Yahoo Messanger (getting a profile) would fail looking for chrome. I don't think Google would do this sort of thing "HiJack a Default Browser" I'm convinced it must be a trogen or virus or a registery hack. If so any ideas how I would go about fixing this without purchasing every virus/trogen program until it WAS removed This method could be an expensive fix. Thank you Russell Feldman

  • Google Drive stripped Outlook 2010 of all emails, contacts, etc

    - by David
I have a business that requires I use the business email: [email protected] I loaded Google Drive as a free cloud to share project details with co-worker. Side effect is that Outlook 2010 does not work now. All incoming emails are now transferred to my personal Google account. Now I can not send business emails inclusive of business headers and footers since Outlook is erroring on send/receive. And all my history of email organization on Outlook is gone. I was previously successfully syncing outlook through Google calendar to keep my blackberry sync'd Your help is appreciated - thank you. David

  • Wireless only connects to Google

    - by dmanxiii
I am using a netgear wireless router to connect to create a wireless network. When connected to the router via an Ethernet cable everything works correctly. When connecting to the router via wireless only Google can be accessed. I've done searches via Google using random words to make sure that it is not a cached page, and these all work. However, trying to connect to any non Google domain the page fails to load. I've accessed the connection with two different laptops, both are running Windows Vista. The network connection is strong on both, but the issue persists for both. Edit: I have configured the wireless networks name and password, and connect to that using the credentials I have defined. I am sure I am not connecting to a neighbors wireless network. Edit2: Typing in the direct IP address for CNN.com ( http://157.166.255.19 ) would not resolve.

  • Windows 8 Google Contacts Sync doesn't sync custom fields

    - by Nishant
I installed Windows 8 Pro a couple days ago. In the in-built "People" app, since there were options to sync contacts with several third party services like Facebook, Linkedin etc., I wanted to sync my Google contacts to the People app. The sync was successful and all my contacts migrated properly. However, the age old problem of custom fields not syncing between Google/Apple/Windows apps is still present. If a field label in my Google contacts is 'iPhone', it doesn't sync! Nor do any other custom fields except 'home' or 'work' with numbers. Is there a solution to this or any other workaround?

  • RSS reader that supports multiple google accounts?

    - by Koen027
I've been looking around for an RSS reader that can handle more than 1 google account? I have multiple gmail addresses for different things in life. I separate mails this way and also RSS feeds. This works fine on google reader, but i would like to have a desktop app that can handle multiple accounts, like Thunderbird can handle multiple mail accounts. All the desktop clients I've found so far ask you for 1 google account and that's where it ends. You can't add anymore.

  • How to Sync with Outlook and Google

    - by Astaar
Recently, Google dropped the support for their Google Sync service. That program was regularly reading your Outlook calendar, parse it, and then modify your Google Calendar to match - effectively synchronizing. This was useful to me because it allowed me to share my professional calendar with whom I chose (namely, my wife). Now I'm looking for an alternative or how to continue a sync using Outlook. Please note I'm not trying to show my online calendar in Outlook. I want to update my online calendar with whatever I have in my Outlook 2010 one. Is there any other way of doing this?

  • Comparing outgoing mail options, self hosted VS google apps in my situation

    - by Hoofamon
I am setting up a small site that has the need to be able to programmatically send mail from time to time. Password resets and things like that. I'm already using google apps to handle my domains email, so now i'm left with the decision between setting up basic SMTP services on my server to send "password reset mails and things like that" OR instead to have the software use google apps to send mail. I like the google apps option as it's less stuff to worry about and seems to fit my needs, i'm trying to figure out what the downsides would be? Thanks for any thoughts

  • the best method for google indexing text content in images?

    - by dnuske
Hi everybody, I have a webpage where I put 1 image once in a while, this is just like xkcd.com I would like to know how to let google know the text in my images. My approach is to put the text in alt html attribute, like this: <img src="http://myapokalips.com/public/cartoons/021_Robot_Tattoo.png" alt="RETARD - aw, that's a sick tattoo! - yea, bro, it means 'strength'" /> is that right? or should I put the text in some random metatag? thank you in advance.

  • Google Chrome Speed Tracer what does Request Timing and Response Timing actually measure?

    - by Bryce Thomas
I'm testing out the Google Chrome Speed Tracer on a few common web pages and taking a look through the results. One thing I'm not sure I understand is what the "Request Timing" and "Response Timing" properties of resources are actually measuring. Initially I thought Request Timing must measure the time from a request for a resource being sent and when that request arrived at the server. However, I then wondered how the Speed Tracer would actually have any way of measuring this. Furthermore, the Response Timing that I'm getting for resources tends to be far less than the Request Timing (e.g. 500ms request, 1ms response), which is a little bit suss. So is anyone able to explain exactly what Request Timing and Response Timing are measuring?

  • Why is Google Charts not showing the right data for me? Are the axis messed up?

    - by alex
http://chart.apis.google.com/chart?cht=lc&chs=600x400&chd=t:171,811,629,507,460,390,434,379,329,312,368,329,329,329,352,330,299,323,340,325,329,1895,1047,736,617,684,620,515 If you go there on your browser, you'll notice that you see a graph. However, the axis are messed up! And it seems like I can't see the ups and downs of my line graph. WHy? I don't get what's wrong. I just want to plot the simple stuff on a line chart. Just those data points. Nothing more, nothing less!
