• Cisco ASA intermittently fails to see traffic

  users | Mikrotik -- Internet | ASA | ServerA and ServerB I'm trying to troubleshoot a problem with a new Cisco ASA 5505. The network design is as above - the Microtik is the existing router, ServerA and ServerB used to plug directly into it. ServerA has IP 10.30.1.10, ServerB has IP 10.30.1.11 The ASA is configured with no NAT, a "allow anything" firewall, and uses the microtik as its default gateway. In effect, it is currently a simple IP router; the firewall and VPN stuff will all come later once the basics are working. Th problem is access to ServerA and ServerB is erratic - sometimes it will work, sometimes it will fail. It can fail for either one of the servers only, or both. When it is working: The Mikrotik logs show ping packets being sent out over the proper interface The ASA logs show the incoming connections. When it is failing: The Mikrotik logs show ping packets being sent out over the proper interface The ASA logs show nothing reaching the ASA. This can fail for one server only (e.g.: the Mikrotik is putting out packets to 10.30.1.10 and 10.30.1.11, but the ASA is only seeing packets arrive destined for 10.30.1.11) It can fail for one source only (e.g.: ClientA on the users network can ping 10.30.1.11, but clientB cannot) The problem can also be seen from the mikrotik router itself; sometimes it can ping ServerA and ServerB, sometimes it can only ping one of them What could be causing this? I can't think of any possible cause that is intermittent and could explain why the problem may occur for one destination server and not others. edit: Link to ASA config

• Bridging Virtual Networking into Real LAN on a OpenNebula Cluster

  I'm running Open Nebula with 1 Cluster Controller and 3 Nodes. I registered the nodes at the front-end controller and I can start an Ubuntu virtual machine on one of the nodes. However from my network I cannot ping the virtual machine. I am not quite sure if I have set up the virtual machine correctly. The Nodes all have a br0 interfaces which is bridged with eth0. The IP Address is in the 192.168.1.x range. The Template file I used for the vmnet is: NAME = "VM LAN" TYPE = RANGED BRIDGE = br0 # Replace br0 with the bridge interface from the cluster nodes NETWORK_ADDRESS = 192.168.1.128 # Replace with corresponding IP address NETWORK_SIZE = 126 NETMASK = 255.255.255.0 GATEWAY = 192.168.1.1 NS = 192.168.1.1 However, I cannot reach any of the virtual machines even though sunstone says that the virtual machine is running and onevm list also states that the vm is running. It might be helpful to know that we are using KVM as a hypervisor and I am not quite sure if the virbr0 interface which was automatically created when installing KVM might be a problem.

• OpenVPN Bridge LAN-to-LAN Configuration?

  I'm trying to configure an OpenVPN bridge LAN-to-LAN setup. Currently, I have the OpenVPN bridge Server/Client setup up running. On the server-side my br-lan interface has tap0, eth0, and wlan0 in the bridge group. On the client-side the br-lan interface has eth0 and wlan0 in the bridge group, the client tap0 is outside of the br-lan group. Currently the two bridge groups are connected via the wlanO interfaces (server-side is the Access Point - AP and the client-side is the wireless client). My goal is to connect the two bridge groups with a wireless VPN pipe. My network configuration: Server: br-lan: 10.4.96.50 Client: br-lan: 10.4.96.75 tap0: 10.4.96.100 <---- issued by the VPN server. Unfortunately, I'm stuck with using a bridge instead of a routed OpenVPN setup. My question is how (if possible) do I add the client tap0 interface to the client bridge group, as to ensure all traffic between the server/client bridge groups is using the VPN pipe? • Malware Cross Site Scriptinig attack / XSS Attack?

  I have been hit by an Cross Site Scripting / XSS / RFI Attack, where I cant find it anywhere in the source of the files and Hashes on files have not been changed according to OSSEC HIDS that I run real time monitoring on all webdirs. • Catastrophic Failure opening ODBC via Citrix

  We recently had our Citrix server crash unexpectedly. When it came back up, there was a new issue -- every ODBC connection fails with "Catastrophic Failure" (0x8000FFFF). The issue is limited to Citrix / ICA connections; logging in as the same user via RDP works as usual. ODBC error happens whether a DSN is used or not, on at least Access, MS-SQL, and CSV. Connections both through the SSL Gateway and directly. There have been a few users actually able to log in without trouble, but I can't pin down anything special about them.

• Windows Server 2008 DHCP with RRAS

  I have a Windows Server 2008 R2 which is a member of a domain, but is placed in a remote location. The server is directly connected to Internet. Clients need to access a particular insecure TCP service in this server (ports 9730 and 9731). Since clients have dynamic IP addresses I cannot know in advance, I thought it would be nice to have them connected through a VPN in order to access the insecure service, but ONLY to access that service, like this: Client ------> VPN TUNNEL ------> (Insecure service at Server) | \----> (Normal internet access) I'd enable the insecure ports in the firewall only from VPN accesses. For this I configured RRAS in the server and gave it a static IP address range (172.19.1.2 through 172.19.1.254) to serve the clients. First I thought I could use DHCP to assign the addresses, but I cannot use DHCP in my LAN connection (not allowed by the hosting service). I tried configuring DHCP binding it to a Microsoft Loopback Adapter, but that's not supported as a DHCP source by RRAS. What I want to accomplish is to send specific DHCP options to the client (network mask, routing table, etc.). In particular: Prevent the client from having the server as default router (without changing the client's "use default gateway in remote network"). Have it as a route for the server's internal RRAS address only (172.19.1.1). Prevent the client from using a 255.255.0.0 mask for the 172.19.x.x network (a 255.255.255.0 mask would be better). Can I do that with RRAS only? How? Currently, the only solution I can think of is to use DHCP in the LAN adapter, but filter DHCP packets so they don't reach the provider's network. However, I'm not sure if that will work. Any suggestions are welcomed! Guille

  I am trying to get the IP of a PPP VPN network connection, but Win32_NetworkAdapterConfiguration does not seem to "see" it. If I interrogate all adapters using my script, it will see everything but the PPP VPN adapter. Is there a specific filter or something I need to enable, or do I need a different class?   I've got IPv6 addresses from SIXXS. My host is connected with SIXXS network over a AICCU tunnel ("sixxs" interface). My host address is 2001:::2, the host on the end has address 2001:::1. On my host IPv6 is fully accessible. • Xen HVM networking wont work

  I'm trying to get a Xen HVM network working using route however I am failing. Xen PV works fine using Ubuntu but when installing Ubuntu on HVM it fails to pick up the network. I'll let you know now that I'm not that experienced with Xen so I would appreciate any help. vm104 is the HVM thats causing me the problems, here is the configs that I believe should help resolve the problem. • Vista ICS issue

  I have a strange problem with Internet Connection Sharing on a laptop running Vista Business. This laptop is connected to the internet via the ethernet port, which goes to an ADSL modem. it is automatically assigned the IP address 192.168.1.50, and the modem/gateway is 192.168.1.1 My friends laptop is running Vista Home. Previously, I would create an ad hoc wireless network, enable ICS, and everything would be perfect. My friend would have internet access via this. However, something has now mysteriously broken. If I enable ICS on the wireless connection, it resets my Local Area Connection, assigning it the manual IP address of 192.168.0.1, which means my connection to the internet is destroyed. Both wireless adapters on each network are assigned auto configuration addresses, in the 168. range. They can see each other fine, but my friends laptop cannot access the internet via mine, even after I have restored the Local Area Connection settings. I understand the computer with ICS enabled must have the IP of 192.168.0.1, but previously, before whatever went wrong, my wireless adapter would be 192.168.0.1 and my friends computer would get an IP via DHCP. I have also tried setting static IP address and making a bridge, none of which works. How can I fix this problem, and prevent enabling ICS from touching my Local Area Connection? Both machines have no firewall, have appropriate settings etc...

• Windows 2008 RemoteAPP client disconnects within a matter of minutes

  I'm having an odd problem with Windows 2008 TS, and remote applications specifically. The situation is as follows: TS idle timeout is disabled via GPO TS terminating disconnected sessions after 1hr (via GPO) My users can log on to the Terminal server, and get a full desktop, OR via rdp files that give access to a few remote applications. When a user connects to a full desktop, everything is fine and dandy, they will remain logged on indefinately, and when they disconnect the session is terminated after an hour. however, when a user connects using a remote application link, the client seems to disconnect after only a few minutes of inactivity, when you click the window, the session reconnects. EventID's on TS server: 4779: This event is generated when a user disconnects from an existing Terminal Services session, or when a user switches away from an existing destop using Fast User Switching. 4778 : This event is generated when a user reconnects to an existing Terminal Services session, or when a user switches to an existing desktop using Fast User Switching users are connecting directly to 3389, not using a TS-gateway at the moment. This behavior is consistent on different clients that we have, Full desktop is fine, RemoteAPP constantly disconnects. The .rdp file used doesn't list any interesting parameters, aside from what application to launch, and where to find it. Can someone explain to me how there can be a difference in behaviour between full desktop, and remoteapp ? since essentially they use the exact same client ? Regards Jeroen

• Cisco SG200 vlan issue in ESXi VSA cluster

  I have three Cisco SG200-26 switches, and I also have two ESXi hosts that I have connected like shown in the below "best practice" map by VMware: http://communities.vmware.com/servlet/JiveServlet/previewBody/17393-102-1-22458/VSA_networking_map.pdf Even though I created the VLANs in the SG200 and I set the two VLANs (508 and 608) as allowed for these untagged ports (where my ESX NIC's are connected), I can not ping from host 1 to host 2 when configuring the NIC's to use 608 VLAN. Am I missing something? my IP's are all in the 192.168. range, and the only reason I need the VLANs is to isolate the traffic of VSA back-end internally, only the two hosts will be using the VLANs. So I think I do not have to create virtual interfaces on my router since that's the case, is my understanding correct? Also sending my switch config screenshot below.. all 3 switches have the latest firmware (it seems these were originally linksys and got rebranded as cisco after the acquisition) http://img31.imageshack.us/img31/2503/switch.gif Any ideas what to change on the Cisco SG200 to make this work , would be appreciated! The second VLAN (608) only needs two IP's: 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 The first VLAN (508) will have about 15 IP's for ESXi Management and VSA cluster service, I could use either 192.168.1.xx or 10.0.1.xx The rest of my network (about 50 clients) is in 192.168.1.xx range VMware also states that the VLAN protocol on the physical switch must be 802.1Q, not ISL, anyone knows which of the two my SG200-26 uses? In addition to that, the only requirement from VSA is that my two hosts: -Are in the same subnet. -Have static IP addresses set. -Have the same Default Gateway configured. If I need inter-vlan routing for this, I suppose I have to create virtual interfaces on my sonicwall, and assign an IP for each VLAN, and then set routes between them? Thank you for your time!

• Wifi Drops Connections with WPA2-PSK

  I run a small computer lab made up of 10 computers of identical hardware and software (Dell Latitudes with Windows 7 x64 Enterprise) and I use a ZyWALL 2WG as a router/firewall. Nine of the computers connect to the router over wifi using WPA2-PSK encryption while the last one is connected by ethernet cable. I'm having a problem where any computer connected to the wi-fi occasionally drops off the network (it cannot be pinged and the client cannot ping the gateway). It only happens on the wifi side and only when the encryption is WPA2-PSK or WPA-PSK. I tried using another router with a different make and model and had no problems. Thinking it could be a software error, I reset the router to factory defaults and installed the newest firmware (V4.04(AQI.8) | 04/09/2010), but still have the problem. The 802.1X log gives the following error User logout because of user disassociation. with this note WPA2-PSK:00242c582ece:logout where 00242c582ece is the mac address of the device. At this point I'm out of things to try and leads to follow. It looks like this user had the same or similar problem, but none of those proposed solutions work for me.

• Openconnect for Cisco VPN doesn't recognize private key file - asn1 encoding routines:ASN1_CHECK_TLEN:wrong tag

  I'm trying to use my Synology DS212 NAS box also act as VPN gateway to my companies VPN. Sadly, they only use Cisco ASA and to complicate stuff even further, we've got to use personal certificates (which is of course more secure, but more complicate to get going…). So I compiled OpenConnect v4.06 from http://www.infradead.org/openconnect/. • Microsoft Remote Desktop Services - Android

  We have recently started testing Remote Desktop Services. We have deployed the environment using the latest server, Windows Server 2012 R2. We have deployed the Web Access Roles, RD Gateway, Connection Broker Virtualization Host and Session Host. We are running both, Virtual machine-based and Session-based deployments. All of these are working as expected internally and externally when using a Windows workstation as the RDS client, however, the Android client is unable to launch applications. Once you install the app from Google Play you are given a screen to add Remote Resources. After entering the appropriate URL, username and password we see the applications that have been published. Unfortunately, when we attempt to launch an app we get the following error: Connection Error Host not found. Please provide the fully-qualified name or the IP address of the host. We have already entered this information otherwise I don't believe we would be able to see the published applications. I think the error is related to the certificate and how it is being used to connect to the applications. Since this is in our lab environment we have not configured a valid external certificate on the servers and the trusted certificate that is installed on the android tablet points to our internal server / domain name. What I would like to know: Has anyone configured RDS Web Access on Server 2012 R2 and attempted to externally connect an Android or iOS device using the Microsoft supported Remote Desktop client. Are others experiencing the same problem we are? Were you able to resolve the issue? Was it related to the external cert / host name?

• haproxy and tomcat intermittent hangs

  I am trying to run haproxy in front of tomcat on a Solaris x86 box, but I am getting intermittent failures. At seemingly random intervals, the request just hangs until haproxy times out the connection. I thought maybe it was my app, but I've been able to reproduce it with the tomcat manager app, and hitting tomcat directly there is no problems at all. Hitting it repeatedly with curl will cause the error within 10-15 tries curl -ikL http://admin:admin@<my server>:81/manager/status haproxy is running on port 81, tomcat on port 7000. haproxy returns a 504 gateway timeout to the client, and puts this into the log file: Sep 7 21:39:53 localhost haproxy[16887]: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:65168 [07/Sep/2009:21:39:23.005] http_proxy http_proxy/tomcat7000 5/0/0/-1/30014 504 194 - - sHNN 0/0/0/0/0 0/0 "GET /manager/status HTTP/1.1" Tomcat shows nothing, no error in the logs and no indication that the request ever makes it to the tomcat server. • From Bluehost to WP Engine, My WordPress Story

  This is probably the longest blog post I’ve written in a LONG time. And if you’re used to coming here for the Oracle stuff, this post is not about that. It’s about my blog, and the stuff under the hood that makes it run, AKA WordPress. If you want to skip to the juicy stuff, then use these shortcuts: My Site Slowed Down How I Moved to WP Engine How WP Engine ‘Hooked’ Me Why WP Engine? I started thatJeffSmith.com on May 28th, 2010. I had been already been blogging for several years, but a couple of really smart people I respected (Andy, Brent – thanks again!) suggested that I take ownership of my content and begin building my personal brand. I thought that was a good idea, and so I signed up for service with bluehost. Bluehost makes setting up a WordPress site very, very easy. And, they continued to be easy to work with for the past 2 years. I would even recommend them to anyone looking to host their own WordPress install/site. For $83.40, I purchased a year’s worth of service and my domain name registration – a very good value. And then last year I paid $107.40 for another year’s services. And when that year expired I paid another $190.80 for an additional two year’s service in advance. I had been up to that point, getting my money’s worth. And then, just a few weeks ago… My Site Slowed to a Crawl That spike was from an April Fool's Day Post, I think Why? Well, when I first started blogging, I had the same problem that most beginner bloggers have – not many readers. In my first year of blogging, I think the highest number of readers on a single day was about 125. I remember that day as I was very excited to break 100! Bluehost was very reliable, serving up my content with maybe a total of 3-4 outages in the past 2 years. Support was usually very prompt with answers and solutions, and I love their ‘Chat now’ technology – much nicer than message boards only or pay-to-talk phone support. In the past 6 months however, I noticed a couple of things: daily traffic was increasing – woohoo! my service was experiencing severe CPU throttling – doh! To be honest, I wasn’t aware the throttling was occuring, but I did know that the response time of my blog was starting to lag. Average load times were approaching 20-30 seconds. Not good when good sites are loading in 5 seconds or less. And just this past week, in getting ready to launch a new website for work that sucked in an RSS feed from my blog, the new page was left waiting for more than a minute. Not good! In fact my boss asked, why aren’t you blogging on Blogger? Ugh. I tried a few things to fix the problem: I paid for a premium WordPress theme – Themify’s Grido (thanks to @SQLRockstar for the heads-up) I installed a couple of WP caching plugins I read every WP optimization blog post I could get my greedy little eyes on However, at the same time I was also getting addicted to WordPress bloggers talking about all the cool things you could do with your blog. As a result I had at one point about 30 different plugins installed. WordPress runs on MySQL, and certain queries running via these plugins were starving for CPU. Plugins that would be called every page load meant that as more people clicked on my site, the more CPU I needed. I’m not stupid, so I eventually figured out that maybe less plugins was better, and was able to go down to just 20. But still, the site was running like a dog. CPU Throttling, makes MySQL wait to run a query Bluehost runs shared servers. Your site runs on the same box that several hundred (or thousand?) other services are running on. If you take more CPU than they think you should have, they will limit your service by making you stand in line for CPU, AKA ‘throttling.’ This is not bad. This business model allows them to serve many, many users for a very fair price. It works great until, well, until it doesn’t. I noticed in the last week that for every minute of service, I was being throttled between 60 and 300 seconds. If there were 5 MySQL processes running, then every single one of them were being held in check. The blog visitor notice this as their page requests would take a minute or more to be answered. Bluehost unfortunately doesn’t offer dedicated server hosting, so there was no real upgrade path for me follow and remain one of their customers. So what was I to do? Uninstall every plugin and hope the site sped up? Ask for people to take turns on my blog? I decided to spend my way out of the problem. I signed up for service with WP Engine and moved ThatJeffSmith.com The first 2 months are free, and after that it’s about $29/month to run my site on their system. My math tells me that’s a good bit more expensive than what Bluehost was charging me – to the tune of about 300% more a month. Oh, and I should just say that my blog is a personal blog even though I talk about work stuff here. I don’t get paid for blogging, I don’t sell ads, and I don’t expense the service fees – this is my personal passion. So is it worth it? In the first 4 days, it seems to be totally worth it. Load times have gone from 20-30 seconds to less than 5 seconds. A few folks have told me via Twitter that they notice faster page loads. I anticipate this will indirectly lead to more traffic as Google penalizes you in search results if your site is too slow, and of course some folks won’t even bother waiting more than 5-10 seconds. I noticed right away that writing posts, uploading pictures, and just using the WordPress dashboard in general was much more responsive. So writing is less of a chore now, which means I won’t have a good reason not to write How I Moved to WP Engine I signed up for the service and registered my domain. I then took a full export of my ‘old’ site by doing a FTP GET of all my files, then did a MySQL database backup, exported my WordPress Theme settings to a .zip file, and then finally used the WordPress ‘Export’ feature. I then used the WordPress ‘Import’ on the new site to load up my posts. Then I uploaded the theme .zip package from Themify. Then I FTP’d the ‘wp-content’ directory up to my new server using SFTP (WP Engine only supports secure FTP – good on them!) Using a temporary URL to see my new site, I was able to confirm that everything looked mostly OK – I’ll detail the challenges and issues of fixing the content next – but then it was time to ‘flip the switch.’ I updated the IP address that the DNS lookup tables use to route traffic to my new server. In a matter of minutes the DNS servers around the world were updated and it was time to see the new site! But It Was ‘Broken’ I had never moved a website before, and in my rush to update the DNS, I had changed the records without really finding out what I was supposed to do first. After re-reading the directions provided by WP Engine and following the guidance of their support engineer, I realized I had needed to set the CNAME (Alias) ‘www’ record to point to a different URL than the ‘www.thatjeffsmith.com’ entry I had set. Once corrected the site was up and running in less than a minute. Then It Was Only Mostly Broken Many of my plugins weren’t working. Apparently just ftp’ing the wp-content directory up wasn’t the proper way to re-install the plugin. I suspect file permissions or file ownership wasn’t proper. Some plug-ins were working, many had their settings wiped to the defaults, and a few just didn’t work again. I had to delete the directory of the plug-in manually via SFTP, and then use the WP Dashboard to install it from scratch. And here was my first ‘lesson’ – don’t switch the DNS records until you’ve completely tested your new site. I wasn’t able to navigate the old WP console to review my plug-in settings. Thankfully I was able to use the Wayback Machine to reverse engineer some things, and of course most plug-ins aren’t that complicated to setup to begin with. An example of one that I had to redo from scratch is the ‘Twitter @Anywhere Plus’ plugin that I use to create the form that allows folks to tweet a post they enjoyed at the end of each story. How WP Engine ‘Hooked’ Me I actually signed up with another provider first. They ranked highly in Google searches and a few Tweeps recommended them to me. But hours after signing up and I still didn’t have sever reyady, I was ready to give up on them. They offered no chat or phone support – only mail and message boards. And the message boards were rife with posts about how the service had gone downhill in the past 6 months. To their credit, they did make it easy to cancel, although I did have to do so via email as their website ‘cancel’ button was non-existent. Within minutes of activating my WP Engine account I had received my welcome message and directions on how to get started. I was able to see my staged website right away. I like this for a few reasons, but primarily I liked their business model. It told me they knew what they were doing, and that they were willing to put their money where their mouth was. This was further evident by their 60-day money back guarantee. And if I understand it correctly, they don’t even take your money until after that 60 day period is over. After a day, I was welcomed by the WP Engine social media team, and was given the opportunity to subscribe to their newsletter and follow their account on Twitter. I noticed their Twitter team is sure to post regular WordPress tips several times a day. It’s not just an account that’s setup for the sake of having a Twitter presence. These little things add up and give me confidence in my decision to choose them as my hosting partner. ‘Partner’ – that’s a lot nicer word than just ‘service provider,’ isn’t it? Oh, and they offered me a t-shirt. Don’t ever doubt the power of a ‘free’ t-shirt! How awesome is this e-mail, from a customer perspective? I wasn’t really expecting any of this. Exceeding expectations before I have even handed over a single dollar seems like a pretty good business plan. This is how you treat customers. Love them to death, and they reward you with loyalty. But Jeff, You Skipped a Piece Here, Why WP Engine? I found them on one of those ‘Top 10′ list posts, and pulled up their webpage. I noticed they offered a specialized service – they host WordPress installs, and that’s it. Their servers are tuned specifically for running WordPress. They had in bolded text, things like ‘INSANELY FAST. INFINITELY SCALABLE.’ and ‘LIGHTNING SPEED.’ And then they offered insurance against hackers and they took care of automatic backups and restores. The only drawbacks I have noticed so far relate to plugins I used that have been ‘blacklisted.’ In order to guarantee that ‘lightning’ speed, they have banned the use of the CPU-suckiest plugins. One of those is the ‘Related Posts’ plugin. So if you are a subscriber and are reading this in your email, you’ll notice there’s no links back to my blog to continue reading other related stories. Since that referral traffic is very small single-digit for my site, I decided that I’m OK with that. I’d rather have the warp-speed page loads. Again, I think that will lead to higher traffic down the road. In 50+ days I will need to decide if WP Engine is a permanent solution. I’ll be sure to update this post when that time comes and let y’all know how it turns out.

• Inter-vlan routing issues

  I've been brought in to help administer a network and I've run into an issue - I'm not sure why this one is beyond me, however I figure an extra set of eyes on the problem may help resolve the issue. I have an HP MSM720 controller and at the time I'm trying to set up a basic hotspot set up with access points. For the time being I'm just looking to have people authenticate with a PSK and access the internet and other resources (namely printers) on other vlans. The user authenticates and the DHCP server on the controller gives them a 192.168.1.0/24 address. They are able to successfully browse the internet and ping machines on other networks, however they are unable to print to network printers that sit on the same LANs as the very computers that wireless clients can ping. The (extremely simplified) topology is as follows Computers on the wireless 192.168.1.1 network are able to ping computers on the 192.168.0.0 network, however cannot ping or print to the printers on the same network. I'm baffled and I have no idea why this is the case. Can anyone shed some light on this for me? Can someone spot the error of my configuration? EDIT : It should be noted that for whatever reason other computers on the 10.0.100.0/24 network cannot even ping the gateway of the Wireless Access network (192.168.1.1) - I'm not sure if this is relevant. These are the VLANS listed on the controller.

• Windows 2003 DNS or IIS6 Problem?

  Weird DNS problem... We have an intranet located internally on a windows 2003 / iis6 server - DNS handled internally on another windows 2003 server. The intranet, amongst other functions, hosts a ecommerce store I wrote that sells nike apparel embroidered with our company logo. Up until recently, it would send an email to payroll and the cost would be deducted from the employees paycheck. lets say this store is located at http://mydomain.com (only available internally) Now, we've been told by the accountants that we can no longer auto deduct from payroll and the employee needs to pay with a credit card or cash. So i went to thawte.com and ordered an SSL cert to be on the safe side (even though the CC gateway is secure) and they told me i need to drop the .com from the domain name Not wanting to mess with a system thats perfectly functional, i created another DNS entry that just points to mydomain (no .com) and left the old one in there. so they would go to http://mydomain On my Mac (OS X 10.6) i can hit either one just fine On Windows XP / Windows XP Embedded or Windows 7 (the vast majority of the pc's on our network) http://mydomain - returns nothing http://mydomain.com still works https://mydomain.com works but says the cert is invalid (as it should, it was issued to mydomain - not mydomain.com) my question is: why does it work on my Mac and not on a Windows PC (i get dhcp and dns just like any other pc on the network) and will removing the .com one from the DNS server resolve this? I've done all the usual attempts - ipconfig /flushdns, ipconfig /renew and release even going so far as to stop and restart DNS client on my Windows 7 box; rebooting and shutting down - adding a regedit entry something along the lines of SecureResponses and rebooting nothing works... I think its the .com and the not conflicting in DNS but i'm not sure - and why not on OS X We're closed on sunday and i'm going to remote in and see what happens if i remove the .com from DNS but any other ideas? -Mario

• Persistent static route stops working after VPN drops and reconnects

  I've got a VPN between two networks, one home and one office (A and B). Their subnets are: (A) 192.168.1.0 and (B) 192.168.0.0 The two networks have identical ADSL routers. Unfortunately these can only do dial-out VPN. So I've got a Windows 2008 server on Network B acting as a VPN server (ServerB). Network A's router (RouterA) passes through Network B's router and connects via PPTP to ServerB. RouterA is assigned the static IP 192.168.0.40 on Network B. There's a persistent static route on ServerB telling it to use 0.40 for all requests to Network A's subnet, 192.168.1.0. (route -p add 192.168.1.0 mask 255.255.255.0 192.168.0.40). This enables ServerB to ping all machines on A (and those machines to ping ServerB). The VPN connection occasionally drops (I'm not sure why - it's set to remain always on and seems to drop randomly). This wouldn't be too much of a problem, as it reconnects automatically and quickly, except that when it does reconnect, the static route on ServerB no longer works. Route print (on ServerB) shows that the persistent static route still exists. However a tracert to a machine on Network A doesn't use the static route; it tries instead to use ServerB's default gateway (which is RouterB), and fails to find the machine. Deleting and re-adding the static route fixes the problem - a tracert uses the static route. At the moment, a batch file to delete and re-add the static route is scheduled to run every day. But this is clearly far from an ideal solution! I hope that's not too confusing. Any help would be very much appreciated.
