• Announcing the New Windows Azure Web Sites Shared Scaling Tier

  Windows Azure Web Sites has added a new pricing tier that will solve the #1 blocker for the web development community. The shared tier now supports custom domain names mapped to shared-instance web sites. This post will outline the plan changes and elaborate on how the new pricing model makes Windows Azure Web Sites an even richer option for web development shops of all sizes. Free Shared Reserved # of Sites 10 100 100 Egress 165MB/Day 5GB/Month Included 5GB/Month Included Storage 1GB 1GB 10GB Throttling CPU/Memory/Egress CPU/Memory Unlimited Price Free $.02/hr per site, per instance $.08/hr per core Setting the Stage In June, we released the first public preview of Windows Azure Web Sites, which gave web developers a great platform on which to get web sites running using their web development framework of choice. PHP, Node.js, classic ASP, and ASP.NET developers can all utilize the Windows Azure platform to create and launch their web sites. Likewise, these developers have a series of data storage options using Windows Azure SQL Databases, MySQL, or Windows Azure Storage. The Windows Azure Web Sites free offer enabled startups to get their site up and running on Windows Azure with a minimal investment, and with multiple deployment and continuous integration features such as Git, Team Foundation Services, FTP, and Web Deploy.  The response to the Windows Azure Web Sites offer has been overwhelmingly positive. Since the addition of the service on June 12th, tens of thousands of web sites have been deployed to Windows Azure and the volume of adoption is increasing every week. Preview Feedback In spite of the growth and success of the product, the community has had questions about features lacking in the free preview offer. The main question web developers asked regarding Windows Azure Web Sites relates to the lack of the free offer’s support for domain name mapping. During the preview launch period, customer feedback made it obvious that the lack of domain name mapping support was an area of concern. We’re happy to announce that this #1 request has been delivered as a feature of the new shared plan. New Shared Tier Portal Features In the screen shot below, the “Scale” tab in the portal shows the new tiers – Free, Shared, and Reserved – and gives the user the ability to quickly move any of their free web sites into the shared tier. With a single mouse-click, the user can move their site into the shared tier. Once a site has been moved into the shared tier, a new Manage Domains button appears in the bottom action bar of the Windows Azure Portal giving site owners the ability to manage their domain names for a shared site. This button brings up the domain-management dialog, which can be used to enter in a specific domain name that will be mapped to the Windows Azure Web Site. Shared Tier Benefits Startups and large web agencies will both benefit from this plan change. Here are a few examples of scenarios which fit the new pricing model: Startups no longer have to select the reserved plan to map domain names to their sites. Instead, they can use the free option to develop their sites and choose on a site-by-site basis which sites they elect to move into the shared plan, paying only for the sites that are finished and ready to be domain-mapped Agencies who manage dozens of sites will realize a lower cost of ownership over the long term by moving their sites into reserved mode. Once multi-site companies reach a certain price point in the shared tier, it is much more cost-effective to move sites to a reserved tier.  Long-term, it’s easy to see how the new Windows Azure Web Sites shared pricing tier makes Windows Azure Web Sites it a great choice for both startups and agency customers, as it enables rapid growth and upgrades while keeping the cost to a minimum. Large agencies will be able to have all of their sites in their own instances, and startups will have the capability to scale up to multiple-shared instances for minimal cost and eventually move to reserved instances without worrying about the need to incur continually additional costs. Customers can feel confident they have the power of the Microsoft Windows Azure brand and our world-class support, at prices competitive in the market. Plus, in addition to realizing the cost savings, they’ll have the whole family of Windows Azure features available. Continuous Deployment from GitHub and CodePlex Along with this new announcement are two other exciting new features. • Scene Graph Traversing Techniques

  Scene Graph seems to be the most effective way of representing the game world. The game world usually tends to be as large as the memory and device can handle. In contrast, the screen of the device captures only a fraction of the Game World/Scene Graph. Ideally, I wish to process(update and render) only the visible game objects/nodes on per-frame basis. My question therefore is, how to traverse the scene graph so, that I will focus only on the game notes that are in the camera frustum? How to organize data so that I can easily focus only on the scene graph nodes visible to me? What are techniques to minimize scenegraph traversal time? Is there such way as more effective traversal, or do I have to traverse whole scene graph on per-frame basis?

The table’s design is simple. They took a regular coffee table, affixed old mother boards to it and then, over the motherboards and elevated by acrylic standoffs, they put a heavy sheet of acrylic to serve as the table top. • *DX11, HLSL* - Colour as 4 floats or one UINT

  With the DX11 pipeline, would it be much quicker for the vertex buffer to pass one single UINT with one byte per channel to the input assembler, as opposed to three floats? Then the vertex shader would convert the four bytes to four floats, which I guess is the required colour format for the pipeline. In this instance, colour accuracy isn't an issue. The vertex buffer would need to be updated many times per frame, so using a single UINT and saving 12 bytes for every vertex could well be worth it: quicker uploads to vram and also less memory used. But the cost is the extra shader work for every vertex to convert each 8 bits of the input UNIT into a float. Anyone have an idea if it might be worth doing? Or, is it possible for the pipeline to be set to just internally use a four-byte colour format? The swap chain buffer has been initialised as DXGI_FORMAT_R8G8B8A8_UNORM, so ultimately that's how the colour will be written. Thanks!

• System will not boot without USB thumb drive inserted

  I've had this issue before when trying out Linux Mint, but I was unable to get any assistance. I was then lead to believe that it was a problem related to Mint, and not grub. I installed Ubuntu 12.04 tonight on a second partition alongside Windows 7. I installed from a USB stick, and everything went peachy until I rebooted without the stick in my tower. It now says: error: no such device: 20cec6ca-4024-4237-84c3-2dba3c851497 grub rescue > I've verified via ls -l /dev/disk/by-uuid that my drive where Ubuntu is installed matches the UUID that supposedly doesn't exist. The UUID of my thumb drive when inserted happens to be 06B3-9C68. There is no mention of my USB drive's UUID anywhere in /boot/grub/grub.cfg I've also tried to re-install GRUB after booting into my system, removing the stick, and running grub-install /dev/sda. It still happens, and I cannot boot without the USB drive inserted into the computer. And what really gets my goat is that the boot order of my system is CDROMHard DriveUSB. It's not even reaching the USB to try to boot from it, so why does it matter that it's not there? Edit: Also, I ran grub-config without the stick in followed by another grub-install. Still no go. • Can't connect to Wired Network after installing 12.04

  I have installed 12.04 into a used HP Compaq DC 7100 CMT. Plugged in LAN cable into the computer and it says network disconnected. from what I understand on the things I've read, it's not getting the address right, maybe it's just a guess (hardware address 00:16:35:78:47:bb). I know the LAN cable is working I can get on the net with the old computer. (Old computer is using device MAC address; Auto eth0 00:11:11:E6:4F:FE). I have put this address into the newer HP and it shows last used (minutes ago) but no Internet sever not found. I tried the hardware address it says never. I feel and think this should be easy to fix. But I just don't know. Let me elaborate a little: I used to be a C/C++ programmer where I used data structure concept like trees, queues stack etc and tried to optimize as much as possible, minimum no. of loops, variables and tried to make it efficient. It's been a couple of years that I started writing java codes, but it is simply not that efficient in terms of performance, memory intensive etc. To the point: I want to enter programming challenges using java so I need to improve my approach at things I program. So please suggest me some books that can help me learn to program better and have a chance in solving challenges in programming.

• Problem with webcam after changing camera input to my iPhone's camera [closed]

• Screen Corruption in half the screen only

  About 50% of the my NATTY desktop screen is corrupted. Once that happens I can re-boot as many times as I want but the problem continues. If I logout and then into WINDOWS for a day I may be successful and boot UBUNTU with a good screen. The desktop is formatted correctly, there's no pixelation, rather there is a fine grained white crosshatch pattern covering the entire screen. If I open any application the screen corruption worsens eventually to the point I can no longer make out anything. I ran ram memory test w/o any errors. I have no display issues when running WINDOWS 7. Any ideas. My computer is a Dual Boot stock DELL 5150 w/3gig of ram an on board video.

• Out Of disk, but still boots

  I have a HP Compaq nx6310 notebook wth 4gb memory & a new 250gb hdd. After installing Ubuntu 12.04, i got an "out of disk" error & was unable to boot. I rebooted in live, instaled & ran Boot Repair then rebooted. Grub menu loaded fine, followed by "out of disk.....press any key to continue". I pressed a key & Ubuntu booted, a bit slow but still booted. • Usb Live No hardisk

  Ok so i own a toshiba laptop , and the thing is my hdd went bad,but i had a usb flash drive with i live cd Ubuntu on it. Now i dont have and hdd plugged in my laptop im only with a flashdrive. My question is how much memory does this live cd support cause my flash drive is 32 gigs and after about 1.5 gigs of downloads a screen shows up and tells me that i dont have enough space left. the other thing is i dont have money to get a hdd right now so i wanna use this flash drive for now but can i somehow customize the cd thru the live edition so i could have programs that i need after restarts i tried with Customization Live Cd but when i run it , it stops and in my terminal it says could not execute not enough space. So if anyone can tell me what can i do with this problem im having with space on my live Usb ubuntu.

• College Courses through distance learning

  I realize this isn't really a programming question, but didn't really know where to post this in the stackexchange and because I am a computer science major i thought id ask here. This is pretty unique to the programmer community since my degree is about 95% programming. I have 1 semester left, but i work full time. I would like to finish up in December, but to make things easier i like to take online classes whenever I can. So, my question is does anyone know of any colleges that offer distance learning courses for computer science? I have been searching around and found a few potential classes, but not sure yet. I would like to gather some classes and see what i can get approval for. Class I need: Only need one C SC 437 Geometric Algorithms C SC 445 Algorithms C SC 473 Automata Only need one C SC 452 Operating Systems C SC 453 Compilers/Systems Software While i only need of each of the above courses i still need to take two more electives. These also have to be upper 400 level classes. So i can take multiple in each category. Some other classes I can take are: CSC 447 - Green Computing CSC 425 - Computer Networking CSC 460 - Database Design CSC 466 - Computer Security I hoping to take one or two of these courses over the summer. • PyGame QIX clone, filling areas

  I'm playing around with PyGame. Now I'm trying to implement a QIX clone. I have my game loop, and I can move the player (cursor) on the screen. In QIX, the movment of the player leaves a trace (tail) on the screen, creating a polyline. If the polyline with the screen boundaries creates a polygon, the area is filled. How I can accomplish this behaviour ? How store the tail in memory ? How to detect when it build a closed shape that should be filled ? I don't need an exact working solution, some pointers, algo names would be cool.

• Ubuntu 12.04.1 Setup doesn't detect Windows 7 partition

  I'm not really that of a linux pro, more of a noob. But i can handle console operations. Well, this is my system: ASUS ZenBook Prime UX31A 256 GB ADATA MX11 SSD Intel Core i5-3317U (Ivy-Bridge) I have a fresh installation of Windows 7 Ultimate (not activated) on a 90 GB NTFS Partition on my SSD, the rest is unassigned. I want to install Ubuntu 12.04.1 from an USB Stick (no CD-Drive...) created with Universal USB Installer 1.9.1.1. However I'm not givven the option 'Install alongside Windows', and when i choose 'other' it shows that 256 GB of 256 GB are unassigned (free) Memory. os-prober gave me: /dev/sda1/:Windows 7 (loader):Windows:chain I also tried: sudo dmraid -rE and: sudo apt-get remove dmraid with no success... How can I install Ubuntu alongside Windows? Thanks very much in advance!

It has been several years since I have programmed in Ruby, but I'd like to refresh my memory and bring my knowledge current. With most programming languages, I've found that I can skip books that only concern a single version bump. Yet, Ruby is a young language and I understand there may have been significant changes in 1.9. Although I already have the second edition, is it worthwhile to buy the third edition for Ruby 1.9? Are the differences that vast, or will it be simple enough to catch up to 1.9 with the online docs?

  I have some problems in Meta description tags in my Blogger blog. When I update my pages in search engine with the help of the Fetch as Google feature in GWT, all my blog's results comes with a correct meta description like Today I am back with a reason that "WHY IS ORIGINAL MEMORY IN HARD-DISK IS LESS THAN PRINTED" on a box. If we buy any hard-disk or a pen drive... But after approx 5-6 days, it changes to my blog's default meta description. This is also happening after changing the default meta description of my blog. I want only one answer that why its happening? After deleting my blog and creating a new blog with the same name this problem was solved. Why this problem was solved? - I am asking this question because to solve problems in the future.

• A better way to do concurrent programming

To avoid this, you use the lock keyword, but if you use that in the wrong way, your code deadlocks. It's all a nightmare. Luckily, there's a better way - Actors. They're really easy to think about. They're really safe (if you follow a couple of simple rules).
