• Business Objects Web Intelligence-style reporting in a Winform app. Is this possible?

  I have a WinForm app that displays results in a Gridview control. If a user right mouse clicks on a row, he can then, from a popup menu, select a command to perform on the row much like windows File Explorer. But now I want to be able to give the user the ability to construct a filter so that he can control which rows are displayed in the grid w/o effecting the functionality of the application. I would also like the user to be able to select the columns/fields that he sees in the grid. For the basis of this question, let's assume that the data displayed in grid comes from a single table. business Objects' Web Intelligence and Desktop Intelligence applications give me very flexible and powerful reporting capabilities, but I want to integrate this capability into my WinForm application. Does Business Objects, or maybe Crystal Reports provide this sort of functionality? I can construct my own query builder but I'd rather not reinvent sliced bread.

• My iPhone App don't works in iOS 4. Why?

  Hi everybody. I make a iPhone App that display some videos, I made it with Xcode 3.2.2 with iPhone SDK 3.1.3 and works fine. But a few days ago I downloaded the last version of the iPhone SDK for iOS 4, the proyect Build ok, no erros, no warnings, but when I run the aplication the video didnt work, the image didn't load but sound works. I don't understand it. Here is the code that I used. • How to find out which app locks a given USB storage device?

  I'd like to unplug my USB mass storage device, but I get the following error message from Windows: Windows can't stop your 'XYZ' device because it is in use. Close any programs or windows that might be using the device, and then try again later. How can I find out which application locks the device, so I can safely unplug it without having to close all running applications first? Note: I'm working on a Windows Vista system.

• Running .NET app from network share in Win 7?

  We have a .NET 1.1 application that we keep on a netowork share. We install the .NET Framerwork to the local PCs and also set the full trust via the following: %windir%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322\caspol -pp off -cg LocalIntranet_Zone FullTrust This has worked fine on all PCs to date however now we have a few new PCs with Win7 and the process no longer is working. The app will run fine from a local drive in Win7 but running the networked copy results in a general exception error. Any ideas on how to get this to work under Win7?

• Which CMS for a mobile app? No HTML, just XML or JSON

  I am a newbie in content management systems. I would need a CMS that can transfer content by XML or JSON to a client. It is ok if the CMS can also manage HTML websites, but the priority is on the data transfer over a web service. Which is the best CMS to use here? I want to avoid spending endless hours learning all the big CMS systems just to find out that they don't support this feature or that it's badly integrated. Thanks.

• Will iPhone OS4 make your life easier or harder as a lone app developer?

  I am interested to hear what people feel about the new iPhone OS4 release. It is obviously very exciting having access to all the new features, apparently (from apple.com) it has over 1500 new APIs. My original thoughts were "Wow, this is awesome", and I suppose it is. I was just getting comfortable with OS 3.2 development though, and now there is a raft of additional stuff to learn in order to keep up with the pack. So I am feeling quite frustrated! Do you think, when working as an individual app developer, having access to these additional features would improve your applications or just water down the quality? I guess being giving the opportunity to improve applications and provide better features should be welcomed. I think frustration comes from struggling to keep up with the continuous changes, but thats the industry we are in I suppose! Any thoughts/comments?

• Is there a quick way to build & install to iPhone (from XCode) without starting the app?

  In XCode, I can use CMD-R to run (or CMD-Y to debug), and my app will compile, install on the phone & start-up. (I've already prepped my phone & XCode so this part works as expected.) What I'd LIKE to do is type CMD-<something else> and have my program compile & install on the phone, but NOT start-up. I realize that I can just CMD-B to build, then go through some rigamarole to deploy, but I'm hoping one of you smart-folk can tell me the lazy-man's shortcut for all of this. Thanks!

• Clipboard app that automatically saves to Web share folder ?

  I currently use SnagIt and have used Windows 7 Snipping tools. These tools allow you to copy a piece of your screen the clipboard and then paste it into other applications on your desktop. They work with Outlook and it's really useful as you don't have to save the image to do a write-up or send an email. Problem is - you can't paste clipboard images into webforms. Gmail web does have image insert feature, but it only works on web images that you copied as it extracts the full url from your copy and uses that. It does not work on with images in your local clipboard. Does anybody know of an application that would allow to clip and save directly to a web folder, maybe something that replaces your clipboard with the URL of the save image location? It would be awesome if the picasa web client or evernote allowed actual clipboard pasting. Instead they ask for a file to upload.

• NSArrayController that is sorted and unique (no duplicates) for use in a pop-up in a core-data app

  I have core data app with an entity OBSERVATION that has as one of its attributes DEALNAME. I want to reference through Interface Builder or by making custom modifications to an NSArrayController a list of unique sorted dealnames so that I can use them in a pop-up. I have attempted to use @distinctUnionOfSets (and @distinctUnionOfArrays) but am unable to locate the proper key sequence. I can sort the ArrayController by providing a sort descriptor, but do not know how to eliminate duplicates. Are the @distinct... keys the right methodology? It would seem to provide the easiest way to optimize the use of IB. Is there a predicate form for removing duplicates? Or do I need to use my custom controller to extract an NSSet of the specific dealnames, put them back in an array and sort it and reference the custom array from IB? Any help would be appreciated. I am astounded that other have not tried to create a sorted-unique pop-up in tableviews.

• Why does Pages.app connect to a server through https and keep the connection open?

  Every time i start up the program Pages (iWork) it connects to a server through https. What is going on? Why would Apple do this? I use no features under Pages that could warrant this behaviour. It connects to IP address 2.22.240.224 on port 443 and keeps the connection open until i close the application. All the info i can get from Wireshark is a bunch of Apple-related domain names. Edit: The same thing happens with Numbers. I have disabled "Documents & Data" on iCloud so that shouldn't be the reason why. Edit 2: The programs in the iWork suite stopped doing this after recent updates so it's not an issue anymore.

  Hello, I am trying to open the SMS/MMS app on the iPhone and have an image that is saved in the camera roll pre loaded into the text field. Is this possible? • what free app can i use to resize an image to specific heigh x width?

  I have an image that is huge and i want to re-size it down to 375 x 210 px to enter a competition. I would like to keep the aspect ratio of the image the same and not have to crop if I dont have to. i dont think my original image is the same ratio or proportions so i understand ill need to crop to get that in line but the rest should just be shrunk. that is to say i dont want to have to crop a small part of the image to meet the 375 x 210 px requirement.

• How practical to change MVC app from traditional authentication to cookieless?

  I have an application written in MVC that uses your regular .Net Forms Authentication. There's nothing particularly new or exciting going on with it. My client has now asked that users be able to log in to the app on the same machine but in different browsers, or different tabs within the same browser. To my mind, he's asking for a scope change to have authentication moved to cookieless instead of its current design. Not having had any experience with doing this in MVC, I'm curious to know before I get started how much hurt I'm in for by trying this. Are there better ways to do it? What should I consider? Any advice appreciated.

• What Windows app can sort a huge XML file?

  I have some enormous XML-based configuration files, with 125000 lines in them. The problem is that they are auto-generated by the system I use, and "child" tags are in a random order within their respective parent tag. This means that a diff comparison is impossible. I want to recursively sort all tags within a parent tag by the value in name="". Some parent tags only appear once and don't have a name="" parameter; these should be sorted by the tag name itself. Once the files are sorted like this, they can be compared quite easily using normal tools. We are currently using ExamXML which can match unsorted XML files, but it fails because the files are too big. Is there an application that can do this? (Windows much preferred; Linux only as a last resort) I do not want to dive into development or XSLT jobs. I am thinking that someone must have made a simple sorting tool like this already - I just can't find it using Google. • Tool to automatically add tracing or instrumentation to an .NET app?

  I have a .NET app which runs once a day. Sometimes there's a logical error somewhere which occurs randomly. Is there a tool like Eqatec's Tracer which automatically injects instrumentation in the code and logs everything to a file? The issue with Eqatec's Tracer is that it opens a window on the machine and it doesn't seem to log. My issue rarely occurs and I need to keep all logs for a long time. I don't want to change the source code and add logging statements all over the place. I am aware of PostSharp & Logfaces.

• How do you determine up/down latency of a web app.

  I am trying to work out how to calculate the latency of requests through a web-app (Javascript) to a .net webservice. Currently I am essentially trying to sync both client and server time, which when hitting the webservice I can look at the offset (which would accurately show the 'up' latency. The problem is - when you sync the time's, you have to factor in latency for that also. So currently I am timeing the sync request (round trip) and dividing by 2, in an attempt to get the 'up' latency...and then modify the sync accordingly. This works on the assumption that latency is symmetrical, which it isn't. Does anyone know a procedure that would be able to determine specifically the up/down latency of a JS http request to a .net service? If it needs to involve multiple handshakes thats fine, what ever is as accurate as possible. Thanks!!

• Getting a PasteScript error when I try to serve an existing Pylons app.

  I'm trying to serve an existing Python 2.5 Pylons application on OS X Snow Leopard. I've already installed Python 2.5 and set it as the default Python installation, installed paster, and installed the version of Pylons the app needs (0.9.6.1) as well as other eggs... but when I cd to the main folder and do "paster serve development.ini" I get the following: File "/usr/local/bin/paster", line 5, in <module> from pkg_resources import load_entry_point File "/System/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.5/Extras/lib/python/pkg_resources.py", line 2603, in <module> File "/System/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.5/Extras/lib/python/pkg_resources.py", line 666, in require File "/System/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.5/Extras/lib/python/pkg_resources.py", line 565, in resolve pkg_resources.DistributionNotFound: PasteScript==1.7.3 I definitely have done "easy_install PasteScript==1.7.3" and I still get this error. • A 110 kb .NET 4.0 app needs 10 seconds for a cold start, thats not acceptable !

  Hello, I am using the .NET 4.0 client profile for my app and I run a dual core with 4 GB Ram and a fast hard disk. nothing big is done at the start just showing a generic List in a wpf listview. How can I make the cold start faster of my assembly ? I have done now again a cold start and run the windowsapplication.exe in my \obj\x86\Debug folder and my harddisk run like hell and it took 10,5 seconds ??? What is wrong? The warm start after the cold one took 1 second. Java 6 apps has not that problem, not at all just to compare...

• How do you leave comments/like a specific page of a Facebook Canvas app?

  I'm building a tabbed Facebook Canvas app that requires individual images to be "Like"d and commented on. Since each image is loaded up as its own page, in this style: http://apps.facebook.com/appname/image/333/ (which translates to: www.mydomain.com/image/333/) I was hoping I could just get a UID for each "image" page and then comment/like based off that. • What is the flag to show the nesting of views in a Mac app?

  I have just spet the last few hours trying to find the flag to use in Terminal to launch an app with the colored outlines around the various view elements to show how they are nested. I know that Matt Gemmell covered it during the Cocoa Face Off session of NSConference 2009 (at about the 13minute mark in the video). Unfortunately I can't actually read what he types and he doesn't speak the exact command. I know it has to be in the Apple docs somewhere but the search system is currently not being of any use. It looks like her just adds -showAllViews YES to the end of the command to open TextEdit but that command has no effect in 10.6.6. I have also tried every other capitalization I can think of as well as using view instead of views. Every command opens TextEdit just fine but doesn't show the colored outlines.
