  Today I thought I should write something about a stalker I've got. Don't get me wrong, I have way more fans than stalkers, but this stalker is particular persistent towards me. But this I didn't click until later into this conversation. He must have saved himself for 9 months before posting to me again. Well... Some days ago I get an email from someone I thought i didn't know. Here is his first email Hi, I want a proper solution for achievement the result. The solution must be standard query, means no using as any native code like TOP clause, also the query should run in SQL Server 2000 (no CTE use). We have a table with consecutive keys (nbr) that is not exact sequence. We need bringing all values related with nearest key in the current key row. His response to that started to get nasty.  I have to say Peso 2 is not acceptable. As I said before the solution must be standard, ORDER BY is not part of standard SELECT. Try this without ORDER BY:  Truncate Table Nums INSERT INTO Nums (nbr, val) VALUES (1, 0),(9,4), (5, 7)  So now we have new rules. No ORDER BY because it's not standard SQL! Of course I asked him  Why do you have that idea? ORDER BY is not standard? To this, his replies went stranger and stranger Standard Select = Set-based (no any cursor) It’s free to know, just refer to Advanced SQL Programming by Celko or mail to him if you accept comments from him. What the stalker probably doesn't know, is that I and Mr Celko occasionally are involved in some conversation and thus we exchange emails. I don't know if this reference to Mr Celko was made to intimidate me either. So I answered him, still polite, this What do you mean? The SELECT itself has a ”cursor under the hood”. Now the stalker gets rude  But however I mean the solution must no containing any order by, top... No problem, I do not like Peso 2, it’s very non-intelligent and elementary. Yes, Peso 2 is elementary but most performing queries are... And now is the time where I started to feel the stalker really wanted to achieve something else, so I wrote to him So what is your goal? Have a query that performs well, or a query that is super-portable? My Peso 2 outperforms any of your code with a factor of 100 when using more than 100,000 rows. • Sun2Oracle: Upgrading from DSEE to the next generation Oracle Unified Directory - webcast follow up

  Thanks to all of the guest speakers on our Sun2Oracle webcast: Steve from Hub City Media, Albert from UCLA and our own Scott Bonell. During the webcast, we tried to answer as many questions as we could, but there were a few that we needed a bit more time to answer.  Albert from UCLA sent me the following information: Alternate Directory EvaluationWe were happy with Sun DSEE. OUD, based on the research we had done, was a logical continuation of DSEE.  If we moved away, it was to to go open source. UCLA evaluated OpenLDAP, OpenDS, Red Hat's 389 Directory. We also briefly entertained Active Directory. Ultimately, we decided to stay with OUD for the Enterprise Directory, and adopt OpenLDAP for the non-critical edge directories.HardwareFor Enterprise Directory, UCLA runs 3 Dell PowerEdge R710 servers. Each server has 12GB RAM and 2 2.4GHz Intel Xeon E5 645 processors. We run 2 of those servers at UCLA's Data Center in a semi active-passive configuration. The 3rd server is located at UCLA Berkeley. All three are multi master replicated. At run time, the bulk of LDAP query requests go to 1 server. Essentially, all of our authn/authz traffic is being handled by 1 server, with the other 2 acting as redundant back ups.

• "VLC could not read the file" error when trying to play DVDs

  I can watch most DVD's on my machine using VLC but today, I went to watch Thor, and it won't play. libdvdread4 and libdvdcss2 are at the latest versions. vlc -v returns 1.1.4 w32codecs are installed and reinstalled ubuntu-restricted-extras are same as above My machine recognises the disc and I can open the folder and browse the assorted .vob files, of which there are many. None of them will open in VLC, or in MPlayer etc. When I run vlc -vvv /media/THOR/VIDEO_TS/VTS_03_1.VOB I get: File Reading Failed VLC could not read the file I also see command line output like this: [0x963f47c] main filter debug: removing module "swscale" [0x963a4b4] main generic debug: A filter to adapt decoder to display is needed [0x964be84] main filter debug: looking for video filter2 module: 18 candidates [0x964be84] swscale filter debug: 720x576 chroma: I420 -> 979x551 chroma: RV32 with scaling using Bicubic (good quality) [0x964be84] main filter debug: using video filter2 module "swscale" ..... I just can't watch THOR, and I'm pretty confident that the disc is ok. It is a rental, but it's clean and there are no surface abrasions. I even cleaned it with Christian Dior aftershave to make sure.

• [MINI HOW-TO] Repair Missing External Hard Drive Database Error in WHS

  If you’re using external hard drives with your Windows Home Server, they might get unplugged and create an error. Here we look at running the Repair Wizard to quickly fix the issue. If an external drive that is included in your drive pool becomes unplugged or loses power, you might see the following error under Home Network Health when opening the WHS Console. To fix the issue verify the drive has power and is plugged in correctly and click Repair. The wizard launches and you’ll need to agree that you may lose data during the repair of the backup database. In this example it was a simple problem where an external drive became unplugged from the server…so you can close out of the wizard. If you look under Server Storage you can see the drive is missing…To fix the issue verify the drive has power and is plugged in correctly. WHS will add the drive back into the pool and when finished you’ll see it listed as healthy and good to go. Using external drives that are part of your storage pool may not be the best way to have your home built WHS setup, but if you do, expect occasional errors such as this. • Developing a feature which sole purpose to be taken out?

  What is the name of the pattern in which individual contributors (programmers/designers) developed an artifact for the sole purpose is to serve as a diversion so that management can remove that feature in the final product? This is a folklore I heard from an ex-colleague who used to work at a large game development company. At that company, it is well known that middle management is pressurized to "give inputs" and "make changes" to the product otherwise they risk being seen as not contributing to the project. This situation have delayed many projects because of these superfluous "management inputs". In one project at the above company, the artists and developers created a supernumerary animated character that appears in every cutscene and sticks out like a sore thumb. They designed it in such a way that it can be easily removed before the game is shipped (this was when games were still sold in physical media and not a downloadable product). Obviously the management then voted to remove the animation. On the positive side, management didn't introduced any unnecessary changes that would have delayed the project because they have shown that they provided constructive inputs to the product. This process pattern has a name among game programmers that work in corporates, but I forgot what was the actual name. I believe it's duck-something. Anybody can help pointing out the name and perhaps some rather credible reference to how the pattern develops?.

• Having trouble installing guest additions for a Xubuntu 13.10 guest OS in Virtualbox 4.2.10

  I am using Ubuntu 13.04 64-BIT as my host operating system running Virtual Box 4.2.10. I get this message when I tell virtualbox to install guest additions(CTRL+D),mounting the volume in the guest OS and run the VBoxLinuxAdditions.run file using root by: sudo ./VBoxLinuxAdditions.run It starts and then comes to these error messages: Verifying archive integrity... All good. Uncompressing VirtualBox 4.2.10 Guest Additions for Linux.......... VirtualBox Guest Additions installer Removing existing VirtualBox non-DKMS kernel modules ...done. Building the VirtualBox Guest Additions kernel modules The headers for the current running kernel were not found. If the following module compilation fails then this could be the reason. Building the main Guest Additions module ...done. Building the shared folder support module ...fail! (Look at /var/log/vboxadd-install.log to find out what went wrong) Doing non-kernel setup of the Guest Additions ...done. Installing the Window System drivers Warning: unknown version of the X Window System installed. Not installing X Window System drivers. Installing modules ...done. It still says the kernel modules are missing and the window is not seamless. Any idea what could be the problem?

• When is meta description still relevant?

  I received this bit of advice about the meta description tag recently: Meta descriptions are used by Google probably 80% of the time for the snippet. They don’t help with rankings but you should probably use them. You could just auto generate them from the first part of the question. The description tag exists in the header, like so: <meta name="Description" content="A brief summary of the content on the page."> I'm not sure why we would need this field, as Google seems perfectly capable of showing the relevant search terms in context in the search result pages, like so (I searched for c# list performance): In other words, where would a meta description summary improve these results? We want the page to show context around the actual search hits, not a random summary we inserted! Google Webmaster Central has this advice: For some sites, like news media sources, generating an accurate and unique description for each page is easy: since each article is hand-written, it takes minimal effort to also add a one-sentence description. For larger database-driven sites, like product aggregators, hand-written descriptions are more difficult. In the latter case, though, programmatic generation of the descriptions can be appropriate and is encouraged -- just make sure that your descriptions are not "spammy." Good descriptions are human-readable and diverse, as we talked about in the first point above. The page-specific data we mentioned in the second point is a good candidate for programmatic generation. I'm struggling to think of any scenario when I would want the Google-generated summary, that is, actual context from the page for the search terms, to be replaced by a hard-coded meta description summary of the question itself.

• SSIS Dashboard v0.4

  Following the post on SSISDB script on Gist, I’ve been working on a HTML5 SSIS Dashboard, in order to have a nice looking, user friendly and, most of all, useful, SSIS Dashboard. Since this is a “spare-time” project, I’ve decided to develop it using Python since it’s THE data language (R aside), it’s a beautiful & powerful, well established and well documented and with a rich ecosystem around. Plus it has full support in Visual Studio, through the amazing Python Tools For Visual Studio plugin, I decided also to use Flask, a very good micro-framework to create websites, and use the SB Admin 2.0 Bootstrap admin template, since I’m all but a Web Designer. The result is here: https://github.com/yorek/ssis-dashboard and I can say I’m pretty satisfied with the work done so far (I’ve worked on it for probably less than 24 hours). Though there’s some features I’d like to add in t future (historical execution time, some charts, connection with AzureML to do prediction on expected execution times) it’s already usable. Of course I’ve tested it only on my development machine, so check twice before putting it in production but, give the fact that, virtually, there is not installation needed (you only need to install Python), and that all queries are based on standard SSISDB objects, I expect no big problems. If you want to test, contribute and/or give feedback please fell free to do it…I would really love to see this little project become a community project! Enjoy!

  Running queries, browsing tables – you are often faced with many thousands, if not millions, of rows. Most people are happy with looking at the first few rows. But occasionally you need to see more. SQL Developer doesn’t show you all records, all at once. Instead, it brings the records down in ‘chunks,’ or as-needed. How It Works There is a preference that tells SQL Developer how many records to get in a single request, or ‘fetch’ of records. The default is 50… So if I run a query that returns MORE than 50 rows: There’s more than 50 records in this resultset, but we have 50 in the grid to start with. We don’t know how many records are in this result set actually. To show the record count here, we actually go physically query the database with a row count type query. All we know is that the query has finished executing, and that there are rows available to go fetch. It tells us when it’s done. As you scroll through the grid, if you get to record 50 and scroll more, we’ll get 50 more records. Or, you can cheat to get to the ‘bottom’ of the result set. You can ask SQL Developer to just to get all the records at once… Once all the records have been fetched, you’ll see this: All rows fetched! A word of caution There’s a reason we have the default set to 50 and not 1000. Bringing back data can get expensive and heavy. We’ve found the best performance to be found in that 50 to 200 record range.

  I guess that Game Dev' is a more sensible place for my problem then SO. I did have JOGL1.1 set up and working, but I soon discovered that it did not support the latest OpenGL, so I started work on upgrading to JOGL2.0 it's not gone too well. Firstly, is it worth me trying to get JOGL to work, or should I just move over to LWJGL? I am fairly comfortable with OpenGL (via C++) and from what I did get working with JOGL1.1, I seem to be OK adapting to it. Assuming that I stick with JOGL, am I foolish for trying to use JOGL2.0? From what I can gather, JOGL2.0 is still in beta, but I am willing to go with it as I want to make use of the latest OpenGL I can. I have been using the Eclipse IDE and have set up a user library for JOGL, here is a screen shot of the configuration and I have added this user library to my own Eclipse project. the system variable %JOGL_HOME% points to "C:\Users\edacosh\Downloads\JOGL2.0" so that should work fine. Now, the problem I actually having, when I try to run my code, on the line GLProfile glp = GLProfile.getDefault(); The code stops with the following message... Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: com/jogamp/common/jvm/JVMUtil at javax.media.opengl.GLProfile.<clinit>(GLProfile.java:1145) at DiCE.DiCE.<init>(DiCE.java:33) at App.<init>(App.java:17) at App.main(App.java:12) Caused by: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: com.jogamp.common.jvm.JVMUtil at java.net.URLClassLoader$1.run(Unknown Source) at java.security.AccessController.doPrivileged(Native Method) at java.net.URLClassLoader.findClass(Unknown Source) at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(Unknown Source) at sun.misc.Launcher$AppClassLoader.loadClass(Unknown Source) at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(Unknown Source) ... 4 more I have also set my project to ensure that it is using jre6 along with jdk6, as I was having some issues.
