• Is it possible to recover from the Windows 8 refresh feature?

  The intention of the Windows 8 RTM (released version) Refresh feature is to restore the system to the way it was when I first installed. It didn't though. Almost everything that came in the start-screen (not a menu any more) is gone, not just third party apps I installed, but EVERYTHING other than the icon for internet explorer, and the icon for the store, and the desktop, were wiped. Out of the box Windows 8 had a pretty large list of things installed, and it seems that the Refresh feature wipes all of them out. Is it possible to really get the system back to a fresh install state, or should I just re-install from the DVD I made? (I have access to Windows 8 RTM, legally through the MS Action Pack subscription.) I suspect that if I create a new account, I might get a new desktop with a default set of icons, but I'm hoping it might be possible to do this without using a different login. The second problem with Windows 8 refresh is it seems to trash the ACL's on my C: drive, taking all permissions away for access to the C: drive, making nothing on it visible or readable to my primary and only login account. I believe it might be possible to undo the damage done by the "refresh" with some judicious use of icacls from the command prompt.

• Will Windows repair my multi-boot when I format the 1st physical partition with boot sector?

  Due to historical reasons I got a laptop with Vista, Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008R2 partitions. (boot from external wasn´t that viable) Nothing (Windows Repair, bootrec /whateveroption) worked when I restored only the Windows 7 and WS2k8 with Acronis TrueImage. Don´t ask me through what idiotic error messages I went during repair tries. (Wrong Windows version,...) So I grudgingly restored all three - with the little additional excursion that I thought changing the active partition to the Windows 7 partition would move the boot sector and let me format the Vista part... Oh no. Seems too logical for MS. (Dunno what I changed, but today it will let me format!) So the real question is: Will formatting the Vista part trash things again beyond comprehension or will Windows Repair bring back the boot rec and remove Vista from the boot options? Or should I just erase all the files to avoid trashing the boot? Where will the boot rec be (after repair) when I format the Vista? On 1st or 2nd partition? And if I get drunk and install Windows 8.1 on the 1st, will anything work? ;-) Thanks

• Debugging methods for Windows XP hangups

  I experience occasional 'freezes' on my desktop machine (Windows XP SP3). I've tried the normal debugging methods I know (watching Process Explorer, running ProcMon (hard to get a good trace because the hangups are so intermittent). Are there any additional system debugging methods that might be useful in discovering what would cause these hang ups? While this question is more about debugging methods than the actual issue itself (which is probably more of a superuser question), the symptoms of the hangup are: All windows become non-responding. Can be brought the foreground, but do not repaint. Taskbar/explorer windows are non-responsive Ctrl+Alt+Del, Ctrl+Shift+Esc, Win+L, do not do anything (though the actions are queued up, and when the system unhangs, they are performed) Oddly enough, usually I can still scroll through the current page I have open in Google Chrome, but I cannot change tabs. Hangup can happen when I have tons of apps open, but also when I only have Outlook, Chrome, and MS Communicator (plus all the corporate spyware). Usually the hang lasts between 30sec and 3 minutes or so. After which I can continue working as usual.

• Make call with alternate provider if NOANSWER

  I have two voip providers, one free an the other paid. The free provider only allows local calls to certain area codes, so I need to fall back to the the paid provider if a call fails. At the moment, I have the following context in my extensions.conf file: [globals] ; freephoneline.ca PRIMARY_PROVIDER=fpl ; voip.ms SECONDARY_PROVIDER=voipms [local] exten => _NXXNXXXXXX,1,Set(CALLERID(name)=${OUTGOING_NAME}) exten => _NXXNXXXXXX,n,Dial(SIP/${EXTEN}@${PRIMARY_PROVIDER}) exten => _NXXNXXXXXX,n,Set(CALLERID(num)=${OUTGOING_NUMBER}) exten => _NXXNXXXXXX,n,Dial(SIP/1${EXTEN}@${SECONDARY_PROVIDER}) exten => _NXXNXXXXXX,n,Hangup() I checked the logs and noticed that the free provider responds with NOANSWER if a call is not allowed (Even though it plays a message). What I want is to: Try calling the ${PRIMARY_PROVIDER} first. If NOANSWER is returned by provider (not that the callee did not answer), then call with ${SECONDARY_PROVIDER} How can I modify my dial plan to get the desired results? EDIT : The primary provider is freephoneline.ca, and I'm using asterisk v1.8.2.3-2

• Monitor programs accessing my keyboard?

  As of a few days ago, my computer is behaving 'erratically'. When I am typing, my pointer will randomly move to another place in the text and start typing a semi-random string of characters. ("gvyfn" is common; It has typed this about 8 times whilst I composed all the text above) It often highlights part of or all the text and overwrites it. It sometimes goes into loops of pressing Control-alt-delete down, bringing up Windows 7 menu thing. It sometimes even messes with mouseclicks; they have unexpected results, like requesting admin priveledges from applications, instead of switching to their window. I believe this is because it is holding a alt-function key down. This behaviour happens periodically, in waves. It might subside for an hour, then continue to haunt me. I believe it to be a virus or malicious program. My anti-virus (Symantec) and multiply MS rootkit removers could not find anything suspicious. I've noticed that sometimes it re-maps keys, and types gibberish when I press certain keys (though no pattern is evident). I believe a malicious program has installed a keyhook on my computer. I'm wondering... - Is there a way to let me view which programs are emulating keystrokes? - Is there a way to view what keyboard hooks are installed? (I'm also at liberty to try any other techniques to remove this blasted thing. It is easily the most fustrating computer problem I've encountered). Thanks!

• Growing a small hosting company [closed]

  We currently have a few servers, 1 WHM VPS (2GB), 1 MS SQL VPS (2 GB), and 1 IIS VPS (2GB). The VPS servers are doing fine as far as uptime and response times but we would like to add the following features. 1) monitoring with load statistics 2) failover I have looked a Zabbix, Zenoss, Nagios, and a couple of other cloud solutions like monitor.us and watchdog from Zerigo. Ideally for the monitoring solution. Our current hosting company suggested we get a dedicated server or VPS and install load balancing software (not sure I like that idea). I've looked into Rackspace and Amazon load balancers which seem like the most feasible solutions for load balancers. Does anybody have any input on the monitoring and load balancing products I'm looking into? Monitoring should monitor uptime as well as give reports on memory usage, disk usage, processor usage, and which processes/websites/users are responsible for the load. It would be ideal if the load balancer worked with any IP. Not sure if either Rackspace or Amazon load balancers would allow load balancing with servers outside their datacenter. Thank you.

• HTMLUNIT Facebook javascript warning

  Hi I am trying to create simple application that would be able to search people on facebook using given e-mail. I am already able to log into an account using the HTMLunit tool and even create a page, which should throw result of my search. But when I try to print the result as XML the file is missing some blocks of javascript results (I can tell that they are missing by comparing file created by my application and source code, that can be viewed by using IE) Is there any way around this? I just need to get the same result IE's showsource function does. Thanks a lot.   If I move the application resources to a UserControl resources everythgin runs groovy. I still don't understand why. I noticed that my application object MyApp did more than inherit from Application it loaded an XAML for the main template and connected all the plumbing. • Exception seem in an eclipse GMF application when file not present in workspace

  I am developing a GMF application . In this situation , I start my workspace and load a file in the workspace . Then I close the workspace and then delete the file from the workspace . After that, I try to restart my application and restore the workspace . Of course , now since the file does not exist , there are going to be exceptions . I tried a lot to handle these exceptions but if I try to get rid of one exception , then another pops up . Does anyone know what methods do I have to override in order to handle this situation correctly .   Disclaimer: I'm completely clueless about .net and COM. I have a vendor's application that appears to be written in .net and I'm trying to wrap it with a web form (a cgi-bin Perl script) so I can eventually launch this vendor's app from a separate computer. I'm on a Windows Server 2003 R2 SE SP1 system and I'm using Apache 2.2 for the web server and ActivePerl 5.10.0.1004 for the cgi script. My cgi script calls the vendor's app that resides on the same machine using the Perl backtick operator. ... $result = "Result: " . `$vendorsPath/$vendorsExecutable $arg1 $arg2`; ... Right now I'm just running IE web browser locally on the server machine and accessing "http://localhost/cgi-bin/myPerlScript.pl". The vendor's app fails and logs a debug message that includes the following stack trace (I changed a couple names so as to not give away the vendor's identity): ... I actually developed my web script there and got it completely working there before I tried moving it to the Windows Server 2003 machine. So what's different about the Windows Server 2003 machine that would keep the vendor's .net app from being executed successfully by a web cgi script? Can I fix this problem somehow to make it work on my server or will the vendor have to make a change to their .net app and ship out a new version? I'm probably the only person in the world who is trying to execute this vendor's app from a separate program, so I hate to bother the vendor with the issue if there's a workaround that I can implement myself here on my server machine. Plus, I'm in kind of a hurry and I don't want to wait 4 or 6 months for the vendor to put in a fix and deploy a new version. Thanks for any advise you can give.

  Switching from Microsofts Oracle Driver to ODP.NET version 10.2.0.100. After changing the data types to OracleDBTypes in a procedure, that worked perficetly using System.Data.OracleClient, the procedure fails if we try and pass in more that 20 parameters. The error returned is: ORA-06550: line 1, column 7: PLS-00306: wrong number or types of arguments in call to 'ADD_TARP_EVENT' ORA-06550: line 1, column 7: PL/SQL: Statement ignorede If we reduce the number of parameters to less than 20 it works. Is this a known issue? • objective-c uncompress/inflate a NSData object which contains a gzipped string

  Hi, I'm using objective-c (iPhone) to read a sqlite table that contains blob data. The blob data is actually a gzipped string. The blob data is read into memory as an NSData object I then use a method (gzipInflate) which I grabbed from here (http://www.cocoadev.com/index.pl?NSDataCategory) -- see method below. However, the gzipInflate method is returning nil. If I step through the gzipInflate method, I can see that the status returned near the bottom of the method is -3, which I assume is some type of error (Z_STREAM_END = 1 and Z_OK = 0, but I don't know precisely what a status of -3 is). Consequently, the function returns nil even though the input NSData is 841 bytes in length. Any thoughts on what I'm doing wrong? Is there something wrong with the method? Something wrong with how I'm using the method? Any thoughts on how to test this? • How to store wiki sites (vcs)

  Hello, as a personal project I am trying to write a wiki with the help of django. I'm a beginner when it comes to web development. I am at the (early) point where I need to decide how to store the wiki sites. I have three approaches in mind and would like to know your suggestion. Flat files I considered a flat file approach with a version control system like git or mercurial. Firstly, I would have some example wikis to look at like http://hatta.sheep.art.pl/. Secondly, the vcs would probably deal with editing conflicts and keeping the edit history, so I would not have to reinvent the wheel. And thirdly, I could probably easily clone the wiki repository, so I (or for that matter others) can have an offline copy of the wiki. On the other hand, as far as I know, I can not use django models with flat files. Then, if I wanted to add fields to a wiki site, like a category, I would need to somehow keep a reference to that flat file in order to associate the fields in the database with the flat file. Besides, I don't know if it is a good idea to have all the wiki sites in one repository. I imagine it is more natural to have kind of like a repository per wiki site resp. file. Last but not least, I'm not sure, but I think using flat files would limit my deploying capabilities because web hosts maybe don't allow creating files (I'm thinking, for example, of Google App Engine) Storing in a database By storing the wiki sites in the database I can utilize django models and associate arbitrary fields with the wiki site. I probably would also have an easier life deploying the wiki. But I would not get vcs features like history and conflict resolving per se. I searched for django-extensions to help me and I found django-reversion. However, I do not fully understand if it fit my needs. Does it track model changes like for example if I change the django model file, or does it track the content of the models (which would fit my need). Plus, I do not see if django reversion would help me with edit conflicts. Storing a vcs repository in a database field This would be my ideal solution. It would combine the advantages of both previous approaches without the disadvantages. That is; I would have vcs features but I would save the wiki sites in a database. The problem is: I have no idea how feasible that is. I just imagine saving a wiki site/source together with a git/mercurial repository in a database field. Yet, I somehow doubt database fields work like that. So, I'm open for any other approaches but this is what I came up with. • Oracle Coding Standards Feature Implementation

  Okay, I have reached a sort of an impasse. In my open source project, a .NET-based Oracle database browser, I've implemented a bunch of refactoring tools. So far, so good. The one feature I was really hoping to implement was a big "Global Reformat" that would make the code (scripts, functions, procedures, packages, views, etc.) standards compliant. (I've always been saddened by the lack of decent SQL refactoring tools, and wanted to do something about it.) Unfortunatey, I am discovering, much to my chagrin, that there doesn't seem to be any one widely-used or even "generally accepted" standard for PL-SQL. That kind of puts a crimp on my implementation plans. My search has been fairly exhaustive. I've found lots of conflicting documents, threads and articles and the opinions are fairly diverse. (Comma placement, of all things, seems to generate quite a bit of debate.) So I'm faced with a couple of options: Add a feature that lets the user customize the standard and then reformat the code according to that standard. —OR— Add a feature that lets the user customize the standard and simply generate a violations list like StyleCop does, leaving the SQL untouched. In my mind, the first option saves the end-users a lot of work, but runs the risk of modifying SQL in potentially unwanted ways. The second option runs the risk of generating lots of warnings and doing no work whatsoever. (It'd just be generally annoying.) In either scenario, I still have no standard to go by. What I'd need to know from you guys is kind of poll-ish, but kind of not. If you were going to use a tool of this nature, what parts of your SQL code would you want it to warn you about or fix? Again, I'm just at a loss due to a lack of a cohesive standard. And given that there isn't anything out there that's officially published by Oracle, I think this is something the community could weigh in on. Also, given the way that voting works on SO, the votes would help to establish the popularity of a given "refactoring." P.S. The engine parses SQL into an expression tree so it can robustly analyze the SQL and reformat it. There should be quite a bit that we can do to correct the format of the SQL. But I am thinking that for the first release of the thing, layout is the primary concern. Though it is worth noting that the thing already has refactorings for converting keywords to upper case, and identifiers to lower case.

I have a problem with running a WS, it looks like my Spring context can't find file persistence.xml Which i am able to believe because i did not have generated META-INF folder in my template (which is Maven project template with archetype org.springframework.ws) I have created META-INF manually. • PerlIO in Windows PowerShell and CMD.exe

  Apparently, a Perl script I have results in two different output files depending on if I run it under Windows PowerShell, or cmd.exe. The script can be found at the bottom of this question. The file handle is opened with IO::File, I believe that PerlIO is doing some screwy stuff. It seems as if under cmd.exe the encoding chosen is much more compact encoding (4.09 KB), as compared to PowerShell which generates a file nearly twice the size (8.19 KB). This script takes a shell script and generates a Windows batch file. It seems like the one generated under cmd.exe is just regular ASCII (1 byte character), while the other one appears to be UTF-16 (first two bytes FF FE) Can someone verify and explain why PerlIO works differently under Windows Powershell than cmd.exe? Also, how do I explicitly get an ASCII-magic PerlIO filehandle using IO::File? Currently, only the file generated with cmd.exe is executable. The UTF-16 .bat (I think that's the encoding) is not executable by either PowerShell or cmd.exe. • jQuery ajaxSubmit ignored by IE8

  Hi there, I am combing the jQuery validation plug-in with the jQuery Form Plugin to submit the form via AJAX. This works perfectly in Firefox & Chrome, but (as usual) Internet Explorer is being a pain. For reasons that are alluding me, IE is ignoring the ajaxSubmit, as a result it submits the form in the normal fashion. However, when the procedure attempts to execute the query, passing the results of the XMLELEMENT function into the USERRECORD output parameter, I get the following exception: Error report: ORA-01422: exact fetch returns more than requested number of rows ORA-06512: at "USPX_GETUSERBYID", line 4 ORA-06512: at line 3 01422. 00000 - "exact fetch returns more than requested number of rows" *Cause: The number specified in exact fetch is less than the rows returned. *Action: Rewrite the query or change number of rows requested I'm baffled trying to nail this down, and unfortunately my google-fu hasn't helped. I've found plenty of Oracle SQL|XML examples, but none that deal with XML returns from a procedure. Note: I know that an alternate method of retrieving XML using DBMS methods exists, however, it's my understanding that that functionality is deprecated in favor of SQL|XML.

• Vim + OmniCppComplete: Completing on Class Members which are STL containers

  Completion on class members which are STL containers is failing. Completion on local objects which are STL containers works fine. For example, given the following files: // foo.h #include <string> class foo { public: void set_str(const std::string &); std::string get_str_reverse( void ); private: std::string str; }; // foo.cpp #include "foo.h" using std::string; string foo::get_str_reverse ( void ) { string temp; temp.assign(str); reverse(temp.begin(), temp.end()); return temp; } /* ----- end of method foo::get_str ----- */ void foo::set_str ( const string &s ) { str.assign(s); } /* ----- end of method foo::set_str ----- */ I've generated the tags for these two files using: ctags -R --c++-kinds=+pl --fields=+iaS --extra=+q . When I type temp. in the cpp I get a list of string member functions as expected. But if I type str. omnicppcomplete spits out "Pattern Not Found". I've noticed that the temp. completion only works if I have the using std::string; declaration. How do I get completion to work on my class members which are STL containers? Edit I found that completion on members which are STL containers works if I make the follow modifications to the header: // foo.h #include <string> using std::string; class foo { public: void set_str(const string &); string get_str_reverse( void ); private: string str; }; Basically, if I add using std::string; and then remove the std:: name space qualifier from the string str; member and regenerate the tags file then OmniCppComplete is able to do completion on str.. It doesn't seem to matter whether or not I have let OmniCpp_DefaultNamespaces = ["std", "_GLIBCXX_STD"] set in the .vimrc. The problem is that putting using declarations in header files seems like a big no-no, so I'm back to square one.

• Advice for Architecture Design Logic for software application

  Hi, I have a framework of basic to complex set of objects/classes (C++) running into around 500. With some rules and regulations - all these objects can communicate with each other and hence can cover most of the common queries in the domain. My Dream: I want to provide these objects as icons/glyphs (as I learnt recently) on a workspace. All these objects can be dragged/dropped into the workspace. They have to communicate only through their methods(interface) and in addition to few iterative and conditional statements. All these objects are arranged finally to execute a protocol/workflow/dataflow/process. After drawing the flow, the user clicks the Execute/run button. All the user interaction should be multi-touch enabled. The best way to show my dream is : Jeff Han's Multitouch Video. consider Jeff is playing with my objects instead of the google maps. :-) it should be like playing a jigsaw puzzle. Objective: how can I achieve the following while working on this final product: a) the development should be flexible to enable provision for web services b) the development should enable easy web application development c) The development should enable client-server architecture - d) further it should also enable mouse based drag/drop desktop application like Adobe programs etc. I mean to say: I want to economize on investments. Now I list my efforts till now in design : a) Created an Editor (VB) where the user writes (manually) the object / class code b) On Run/Execute, the code is copied into a main() function and passed to interpreter. c) Catch the output and show it in the console. The interpreter can be separated to become a server and the Editor can become the client. This needs lot of standard client-server architecture work. But some how I am not comfortable in the tightness of this system. Without interpreter is there much faster and better embeddable solution to this? - other than writing a special compiler for these objects. Recently learned about AXIS-C++ can help me - looks like - a friend suggested. Is that the way to go ? Here are my questions: (pl. consider me a self taught programmer and NOT my domain) a) From the stage of C++ objects to multi-touch product, how can I make sure I will develop the parallel product/service models as well.? What should be architecture aspects I should consider ? b) What technologies are best suited for this? c) If I am thinking of moving to Cloud Computing, how difficult/ how redundant / how unnecessary my efforts will be ? d) How much time in months would it take to get the first beta ? • Edit Contact code worked in 1.6 but doesn't work on Droid 2.1?

  Hi All, I had some fairly simple code in my app to invoke Edit Contact activity on a known good contact index that worked in Android 1.6 but is broken for me now in Android 2.1 on the Droid.
