• Copied XEN vm to new host - boots up asking to fix the HD (win2003 guest)

  I have an old box running CentOS 5.4, and XEN. It has a 2003 Guest that I wish to move over to another CentOS box running XEN. I stopped the machine, and have SCP'd the HD image files of the guest to the new host. I ran md5sum on the files, and they are identical. When I configure a new Guest, it fires up, but windows fails to boot asking to fix the system instead. The HD are identical, so I'm guessing there is something that I missed. I don't want to go through this procedure, because the system needs to be identical. How can I get one VM to run seamlessly on another host? Any ideas, and comments are 100% appreciated. Thank You

• Spare PC with XP to be used as Torrent Downloader and local Web Server HOWTO?

  Hi I'm a bit in a pickle in trying to setup my old laptop using Windows XP to be able to serve as two devices in one, I want to make it a downloader for torrents and a local web server as well and how to do this? I have a wireless NIC and LAN, and I have two internet connections and i would like to be able to download torrent only on LAN and be a webserver on the Wireless, also the webserver can be accessed through the internet. The reason for trying to separate the connection is I can't have torrent downloads using all my bandwidth as my web pages cant be access as it times out or too slow. I have two broadband connections, is this even possible or would i need a different OS or program that I can download? please

• HP EX485 Media Server Keeps Powering Down & Restarting Automatically

  HP Home Media Server EX485 approx 3 years old. Unit suddenly powers itself off and restarts automatically as if the power button was pressed. Server restarts up OK for a few minutes and the cycle repeats itself again & again. Reseated all drives, check fans in chassis and they are OK (turning). Can login to server to see logs before it powers itself down again. Suggestions any help is appreciated on resolving this problem. Thanks.

• Using wrong adaptor with same V but wrong amps with my laptop

  I have a Toshiba Satellite A200 1-GH. My sister's old laptop was also a Toshiba. The adaptors were mixed somehow, and I've been using the wrong adaptor for a very long time. I've realized this when my computer could not work without the adaptor plugged in. When I checked out the voltage-amps values, the values on my computer were 19V-4.7A, the values on the adaptor were 19V-3.42A. I bought a new adaptor corresponding to the values written under the computer immediately but I was wondering if the battery should also be replaced? If so, what happened to the battery technically that made it useless anymore? Can anybody help?

• Running Windows XP with VMWare Fusion from a Fujitsu-Siemens recovery disk.

  I have installed a trail version from VMWare Fusion. I had (sold now) a very old Fujitu-Siemens laptop (from around 2001) which came with two recovery disks (which I still have :P). One recovery disk is a Windows XP installer, the other is a disk with drivers and useless software you will never use and run permanently in the background. If I install Windows XP from the recovery disk (which did not contain any software except what comes with Windows XP, for as far as I know), will it run in VMWare Fusion? Or do I really have to buy/pirate a new Windows XP installation disk? Thanks. Yes, I need XP, not 7.

  My Thinkpad X61 Tablet is running out of space, and I would like to give it a bigger drive. I would like to clone the old drive to a bigger new drive. What do I need to get to accomplish this? The fewer things to get, the better, of course. The easier, the better. My system: Thinkpad X61 Tablet. XP w/ the latest SP. I am OK with XP, and don't want to reinstall it. No optical drive. • Can't access to a iSCSI volume

  I have a iSCSI target on a customer place I'm using from an old Fedora (Core6) server. I configured it and formatted as ext3 (mistake, now I know) and I've been working with it for some time. Now I need to access this volume from other machine. As far as I've read, I can't do it safely from two machines at the same time (yep, that's the first thing I tried). So I've umount it from original server and tried to mount it on the new server (I did it at first with Ubuntu 10 LTS but when I was unable to do it I installed another Fedora with the same configuration) with no success. The problem: I can see all target on NAS but when I do a "fdisk -l" to see all devices and know which mount I see all targets as SFS filesystem. From the original server I see all SFS (after all, they belong to my customer and don't know what he have in) except the one I manage which I see as 'Linux'. What can I do? • Is there any trick to join and use Windows 8/8.1 with Samba 4 (4.1.6)?

  It seems that Samba doesn't like at all. I've followed various tutorials and I can't get Windows 8 to work properly with a Ubuntu Server as domain controller. This week i've downloaded ubuntu 14.04 lts and set a fast domain configuration. As usual all other Windows version (XP and 7) work but the newest M$ nightmare doesn't. In this try it doesn't even join the domain, keeps saying the my username or password are wrong. • Occasional HDD Related Hangs

  I have an issue that seems to be disk related. Occasionally my system will block for 30 or so seconds and is mostly unresponsive. Those things already in memory requiring no disk access continue to function but those things requiring disk access (even small) hang. 30 seconds later everything is back to normal. I have 2 Samsung drives in RAID 0. I have 1 WD drive (has pagefile) I have an SSD used for caching (Intel Smart Response). This is a new install of Windows and the drives were fine in my old PC (~1 month ago). Has anyone experienced anything similar? Any suggestions to solve this one? Thanks in advance.

• Mouse will not click and drag

  My mouse is currently having trouble with Click and Drag. It moves well, it clicks well (including double click); but it will not click and drag correctly. When dragging it just drops the highlighted area almost immediately after starting it. The operating system is Windows 7 x6, and the mouse is a Microsoft 5 Button laser wired model that's approximately 3 years old. The problem is relatively new, but has been happening consistently for several weeks through several reboots. Is there anything to try besides buying a new mouse?

• Dell Inspiron 530 - SSD Worth it?

  I'm going to be upgrading my Dell Inspiron 530 (2.0 Ghz Intel Dual Core CPU, 3 GB RAM) to windows 7 soon, and rather than backup and reformat my existing drive, I'm planning on getting a 2nd drive to replace my current primary, and moving it to a secondary. Thus, this seems like an excellent time to get a solid-state drive, if its going to be worth it. As far as I can tell this machine has a SATA-I controller, and I'm unsure if I'll see a noticeable performance increase with an SSD without going to SATA-II. So I have a three part question here given all that: Will spending the money on a SSD be worth it if hook it into a SATA-I controller? Is it reasonable to upgrade the controller on this machine to a SATA-II controller? Given that this PC is kind of old to begin with, am I better off performance wise to just stick with a faster HDD?

• Migrate 3 terabytes of files to a new server windows 2003

  We have a new file server to handle the obscene amount of files generated by the company (PDFs, XLS, DOCs and JPGs). Files being moved to the new server total about 3tb. The problem is we can't take the company down for days to move the files. The other problem is the applications creating all these files have to reference previous files, so we can't simply point them to the new server. Also, there isn't an option to have the applications create files on the new server, but reference the old server for existing files. The servers are x64 win2003 r2. Both servers are on the same subnet. DFS doesn't work. Is there an application that can handle this amount of data to copy the files over, throttle bandwidth, and do a 'merge'? By merge I mean constantly copying over newly created files until the two servers are synched.

• Snapshot/Save GPU Drivers

  Since I'm running XP/32-bit, my GPU drivers are quite fragile. I've spent several hours trying to back up and restore from old versions, on at least two separate occasions. Writing down the device drivers is not enough. In the short term, I would like to somehow save, zip, backup, snapshot, or something so that if I need to reinstall my OS in the short-term, I have a reliable way to get the drivers. ATI's website doesn't have the install kit anymore, and I don't have it saved; I googled, but didn't find the exact same version. How can I backup/save my drivers so that I can reinstall them later?

Now if I remove those entries from fstab, the drives disappear from Computer. If I add the entries back, they show up as an unmounted drive even when the drive is not plugged in.   I am building a Pay Rate Calculator worksheet with a Flat/Base pay rate & numerous Overtime pay rates. I would like to be able to have the "Overtime" pay rate cells to change depending on my selection from my drop-down list. My list selections are "Flat Rate" and "Compounding". 1) If I select "Flat Rate" how can I make all the "Overtime" cell rates and totals default to zero or calculate to zero, to show the user there is no overtime rates to be applied to this job and to use the one rate to pay? 2)And if I select "Compounding" the Overtime rate cells are updated to add/include additional fees, to show the user Overtime rates apply to the job and penalties have automatically been calculated on top for them. • Can I swap a HDD from a RAID 1 for a bigger capacity drive?

  I have a RAID 1 setup with two 500GB drives. So they mirror each other. I know that if I take one of them out and put in a new 500GB drive it will set it up so that the new drive will mirror the old one. My question is if I take out one of the 500GB drives and add say a 2TB drive, will it set up the 2TB drive to mirror the 500GB? I assume if it does, it will only allow me access to 500GB. However, if I then take out the one remaining 500GB after the data has been mirrored and stick in a 2TB, once that is rebuilt, will I then have a 2TB RAID setup with the same data as what was originally on the 2x 500GB setup?

• Motherboard not recognizing memory anymore

  I bought some new RAM and installed it on my motherboard. But, the BIOS would not post. There's an LED on my motherboard that shows error codes, and it showed the error: No usable memory detected. So, I removed the new memory and reinstalled the old memory, thus restoring the computer back to its original configuration. But, the BIOS still would not post, still giving the error: No usable memory detected. I've ensured that the memory and power headers are seated properly. I've tried all possible combinations of memory slots, and I've also reset the CMOS, but the error remains the same. The computer was working fine before I tried upgrading the memory, and I originally assembled the computer myself. What are some possible causes of this problem?

• How do I force Windows to play sound through the speakers only when a USB headset isn't connected?

  I'm using a speaker set connected through the green audio jack and a headset which I connect through USB. My problem is that every time I connect/disconnect my headset, I have to go through a lot of settings/restart some programs to make the sound go through the speakers again. What I want is to have audio play through the headset when it's connected, but if I disconnect the headset, I want the audio to automatically play through the speakers. For example, if I connect/disconnect the headset while listening to music, I have to restart the application to make the music play through the correct speaker/headset, and it shouldn't be that inconvenient. (I found this somewhat relevant topic, but the problem is that it doesn't really give an answer. (Also, it is 2 years old.))

• How can I re-create Microsoft Cluster Service resource groups on a different cluster?

  I use Microsoft Cluster Service on a cluster of Windows Server 2003 machines containing several dozen resource groups. In the process of migrating to newer hardware, I would like move resources to the new machines on resource group at a time spread out over a few days to ease the migration and minimize risk. I was wondering of there was a smarter way to do this than manually re-creating resources on the new and then deleting them on the old cluster? The cluster has already been set up properly, the only missing is the resource groups and the resources they contain (IP, network names, services...). I have looked through the options of the cluster admin GUI and cluster.exe's commandline options, but haven't found anything like an import/export feature to copy over the configuration of a resource or entire resource group. Does something like this exist?

• Can I reprogram a microphone input to be used as an audio output? (on XP)

  I have a five year old Sony Vaio laptop (vgn-fw31m) that has had impact damage to the audio-output mini-jack for about the last year or so. In a recent discussion with my brother, we wondered whether it would be possible to write a program that would enable windows to use the microphone mini-jack input as the audio-output? As I currently use this laptop for work I am not keen to risk pulling it apart in order to replace the components comprising the audio-out. I therefore 'hope' that a programming solution exists. • why can't i delete this file on my pc

  i am trying to install some software and it requires removing the following file: cd %SYSTEMROOT%\assembly\GAC rename Microsoft.Office.Interop.Outlook Microsoft.Office.Interop.Outlook.Old the problem is when i do the rename it looks like its successful but it doesn't seem to actually delete Microsoft.Office.Interop.Outlook i tried to explicitally do: del Microsoft.Office.Interop.Outlook and again it looks like it works but then when i do a "dir" i still see that file. Do you have any suggestions on why this wouldn't allow me to delete this file. I have outlook closed when i am doing this so i wouldn't think outlook is locking the file.

• Java Applets fail to launch in Windows 7 64bit

  Hi can you help? I'm having great trouble launching Java applets using Windows 7 64 bit. I have the 32 bit version of Java installed (as recommended, for use with 32 bit browsers). When I click on an Java applet to open it the Java logo shows with a circular progress bar, but the process goes no further, just the progress bar going round and round. There are no error messages. The computer is a few months old and Java has never worked properly. I've tried with both IE9 and Chrome, followed the suggested fixes, uninstall then reinstall, check certain browser settings (all were in order), check Java control panel settings (again all was in order) delete the internet cache etc, tried 32bit & 64bit Java side by side. All to no avail. I'm baffled Is there anything else to try, or do I have to accept a computer without Java (Very inconvenient!) Thanks

• Any cons for using Tuffmail?

  I've been looking for Email hosting for some time now. I decided on fusemail for the longest because of the price, but after doing some research, it looks like they have big problems over there. I've been looking at Tuff Mail lately, and I have not found any negative feedback on the service. Also, all the extremely good reviews I have found on Tuff Mail are 1-2 years old. Does anyone currently use Tuff Mail now? Is there any way you can give me a pro/cons on them?
