  I've got an ASP.NET page with a simple form. The user fills out the form with some details, uploads a document, and some processing of the file then needs to happens on the server side. My question is - what's the best approach to handling the server side processing of the files? The processing involves calling an exe. Should I use seperate threads for this? Ideally I want the user to submit the form without the web page just hanging there while the processing takes place. • Why is iphone Simulator not rendering HTML5 page correctly?

  hello all, I have a page I am developing in .net using HTML5 intended for a WebView in an iphone App. The page looks just fine in Safari. When I load it in the iphone Simulator it is rendering as plain text, no styles or js loading. I thought it might be an issue with .net, but seeing as it works in Safari i am stumped. When I use the XHTML doctype it works just fine in the Simulator. Any ideas why this is occurring and what the fix may be? Thanks!

• Is there a way to detect Layout or Display changes in WPF?

  Hello! I am trying to check how fast the Frame control can display a FixedPage object when it is assigned to Frame.Content property. I plan to check the tick count before and after the assignment to the Content property. Example: int starttime = Environment.TickCount; frame1.Content = fixedpage; int endtime = Environment.TickCount; The problem is that the assignment to the Content property might be asynchronous and returns immediately therefore i get a zero amount of time. The rendering of the FixedPage however visually has a lag time from assignment of the Content property up to the point where the FixedPage appears on screen. The Frame.ContentChanged() event is no good either because it gets triggered even before the FixedPage appears on screen so it's not accurate. I'm thinking of detecting the change on the window or control's display instead in order to get the time when the FixedPage is actually displayed on screen. Is there a way to do this in WPF? Thanks!

• Can I set a style for the content of an iframe from the main page?

  We have a page the embeds a Google Calendar in an iframe. Recently, a warning box div began appearing on the calendar that looks like this: <div id="warningBox" style="color:#aa0000;">Events from one or more calendars could not be shown here because you do not have the permission to view them.</div> Obviously the best solution here is to find the private events and remove them, but so far the search for those events has proved fruitless. This calendar is an aggregate of several calendars, including a few we don't control (ie weather). We're still looking, but in the meantime, I would like to try to hide that div. I know that iframes enforce the separation between the pages, such that the child page is pretty much a law unto itself. But surely there must be some way to set a style on an element inside the frame?

So, for a side gig of mine I decided to do some mock ups to show the client prior to dev and I'm quickly feeling that PowerPoint is not the right tool for this. What are you using for this type of stuff - some other software? pen/paper?

• How can I implement lazy loading on a page with 500+ images?

  I basically have a booking engine unit results page which must show 40 units and per each unit there's 1 large image of the first thumbnail and an X number of accompanying thumbnail images. I've been using the jquery lazy load plugin, but it's not thorough enough ( I'm invoking it on DOM Ready ), plus it doesn't really work in IE ( 50% of the clients use IE so it's a big issue ). What I think I really need to do is not really spit out the image but a fake element such as a span, and possibly modify my code such that if the user views the span, render it into an image element. <span src="/images/foo.gif"> The booking engine relies on JS so I think I might be forced to just rely on ajaxifying all the thumbnails and have event handlers on window scroll, etc in order for the page to be "usable" and load at an average time ( 2-3 seconds instead of 5-30s on high speed DSL/Cable ). I'd appreciate any examples or ideas.

  Hi all, Have had a good hunt through the archive but can't find anyone trying to do this... hope someone familiar with the facebook API can confirm if it's possible? Basically I have a client who wants to replicate their membership sign up process in a tab on their facebook page. The form would still submit to their own website to process, we'd just be replicating the form fields. As an additional requirement they want to capture peoples facebook user ID and get permission to post back to a users wall at the same time... The idea being that once the user is a member we can post back to their wall so their friends see that they've signed up... Basically after a sanity check that: 1) these things are possible to do; 2) the best method to build the form in a FB page - I'm guessing using JS to create all fields & ajax to submit to the external site?   There is a website I am trying to pull information from in perl, however the section of the page I need is being generated using javascript so all you see in the source is <div id="results"></div> I need to somehow pull out the contents of that div and save it to a file using perl/proxies/whatever. e.g. the information I want to save would be document.getElementById('results').innerHTML; I am not sure if this is possible or if anyone had any ideas or a way to do this. I was using a lynx source dump for other pages but since I cant straight forward screen scrape this page I came here to ask about it!

  I've been asked at work whether it is possible to write, on purpose or by accident, JavaScript that will remove specific characters from a HTML document and thus break the HTML. An example would be adding some JavaScript that removes the < symbol in the page. I've tried searching online and I know JavaScript can replace strings, but my knowledge of the language is negligible. I've been asked to look into it as a way of hopefully addressing why a site I work on needs to have controls over who can add bespoke functionality to the page. I'm hoping it's not possible but would be grateful for the peace of mind!

• "Easiest" way to track unique visitors to a page, in real time?

  I need to record in "real time" (perhaps no more than 5 minute delay?) how many unique visitors a given page on my website has had in a given time period. I seek an "easy" way to do this. Preferably the results would be available via a database query. Two things I've tried that failed (so far): Google Analytics: Does the tracking/reporting, but not in real time - results are delayed by hours. Mint Analytics ( http://www.haveamint.com/ ): Tracks in real time, but seems to aggregate data in a way that prevents reporting of unique visitors to a single page over an arbitrary time frame. So, does anyone know how to make Mint Analytics do what I want, or can anyone recommend an analytics package or programmed approach that will do what I need?

You know how sometimes you are on a good site and you click a button (like to submit a form) and the form doesn't go away, instead, the foreground becomes transparent and it contains a message of some kind, or another page.   So, everyone is really used to the errors that PHP gives you. They look kind of like this: Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 8388608 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 2 bytes) in /path/to/file(437) on line 21 My question is, do you put in the time to make your error pages more useful? I find that I am able to debug a lot faster using my own error page: I find this to be a lot better than the PHP errors because it gives me a stack trace, the usual error message, along with the actual location of the error, and more. Also, are there any downsides from creating your own development error pages. Obviously you wouldn't want to have a user see this page, but what about during development?

  I’m having a lot of trouble understanding how to create a module that will add an extra button to the shopping cart page. I found lots of info on payment modules and stand-a-lone page modules, but nothing for this. I simply need to add a button underneath the regular “Checkout” button that can post item data to another website. I’ve created a module but can’t get Magento to recognize it and display the button on that spot. Programs such as wget or curl will non-interactively retrieve a set of URLs, but do not execute javascript or any of that 'fancy stuff'. My ideal solution looks like any of the following (fantasy solutions): cat urls.txt | google-chrome --quiet --no-gui \ --output-sources-directory=~/urls-source (fantasy command line, no idea if flags like these exist) or cat urls.txt | python -c "import some-library; \ ... use some-library to process urls.txt ; output sources to ~/urls-source" As a secondary concern, I also need: dump all included javascript source to file (a la firebug) dump pdf/image of page to file (print to file)
