• Linux and Windows Server Setup

  Hello, I have an win 2008 R2 machine (a home machine of mine) that I am messing around with and learning the server technologies. I also wanted to try out oracle, and was wondering if its possible to setup a LINUX machine with Oracle, and have the two interoperate. What I mean by that is if I setup the server and my laptop on a domain, would it be possible to communicate to that LINUX machine and thus the Oracle database, and if so, are there any good resources on the setup? I was going to create a LINUX hyper v virtual... Any tips appreciated. Thanks.

• Terminal Server Logging Software

  I have recently been trying to find software to monitor users' activities on our terminal server. After a quick search, I found http://www.softactivity.com/tsm.aspx. Has anyone ever heard of or used this program? I just want to make sure this company is legit and the software runs efficiently. The server I would be installing it on has about 40-50 users on it. I am hoping the software has some type of setting to only monitor certain users, because i would hate to waste resources. If this is not good software, does anyone have any recommendations?

• Printer monitoring script (PowerShell)

  I am going to write a script of some sort to check event viewer in a windows server 2003 for all printjobs, and then write them to a comma delimited textfile like printername_floor_room.txt I am wondering what the best way is to do this realtime, and keep checking the event viewer constantly. Any caveats I need to be aware of? Thanks EDIT: Okay, so I will most likely go for PowerShell and use Get-EventLog and then edit the "table" data. Problems I'm having: if I were to save all this data to a text file, how do I get the data out of it? A comma-separated file I could work with, but this, I'm not really sure. And once that is sorted out, I'm still not sure how to keep the file updated more or less real-time. Can I make this service-like, without hogging up all resources? Run it every x seconds for example?

• Http 400 'Bad Request' and win32status 1450 when larger messages are sended to a WCF service

  we sometimes receive Http 400 bad request resultcodes when posting a large file (10mb) to a WCF service hosted in IIS 6. We can reproduce this using SOAP UI and it seems that it is unpredictable when this happens. In our WCF log the call is not received, so we believe that the request does not reach the ASP.NET nor WCF runtime. This happens on multiple websites on the same machine each having their own application pool. All IIS settings are default, only in ASP.NET and WCF we allow bigger readerQuota's etc.... The win32status that is logged in the IIS log is 1450 which we think means "error no system resources". So now the question: a) how can we solve this b) (when a is not applicable :) ) which performance counters or logs are usefull to learn more about this problem? greetings, Tim

• Windows 7 Stopped Using hosts file for DNS Resolution

  I am running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. Starting today, I noticed that DNS resolution is not reading my %SYSTEMROOT%\System32\drivers\etc\hosts file. I say this because I added two new entries to the file and when I run 'nslookup' on the command line, they don't resolve. Further, just trying to resolve 'localhost' results in my primary DNS server being queried. I've read several threads that suggest that the file might have been corrupted and to move it aside and create a new one. I've done that, and no improvement. Is there some sort of registry key that controls the sequence of resources used for DNS resolution (similar to nsswitch.conf on UNIX)? What else could be causing this? Thanks in advance.

• Joining computers from workgroup to active directory

  I have several computers at my office that I want to put on our domain. These computers currently are used by employees with local computer accounts and they have information stored under these accounts. When I join their computer to the domain how would or could I keep their current computer accounts and add them to the Active Directory so they could log in as usual access the network resources? Is this possible or do I need to just start from scratch on all this with their accounts and locally stored files? We are using Windows 2008 R2 and all systems being added have the Windows 7 pro or higher. All I want to really do is add the systems to the domain and have their accounts in the Active Directory so they can log in, access files which are already on their computer, and use network reosoures. If I can add their computer and then add same username and password to Active Directory to get this all to work that would be fine. I am just looking for minimal impact on the user really to get this done.

  Hi guys. I'm appologizing in advance to the guys who will tell me this isn't a tech/server/IT issue! But I've been beating my head around this for a couple of days now. I'm trying figure out who to talk to, or which company I can approach to try to see if there are Grid/Cloud Computing companies who have programs setup to deal with colleges. I'm dealing with a compsci course, and we're looking at a few projects that would require a great deal of computing/computational resources. But in calling different companies (HP/Rackspace/etc..) I'm either not getting through to the right depts, or to the right people, or the companies just aren't setup for this. There are plenty of companies who have discounts for desktop software/hardware, but who in the biz deals with discounts/offerings for Cloud/Grid Computing solutions??   Hello, I want to learn about servers, not for any particular application, I simply want to learn. I am looking at LAMP, but I can't find any resources for learning about it. I have a giant book from 2004, would it still be applicable or should I use something more recent? I looked online but couldn't find anything beyond installation. Is there a comprehensive resource, preferably using Python (since I already know it) and preferably free, for learning LAMP? I don't know much about networking, is it a prerequisite for LAMP? • Corrupted .WAR file after transfer from 32-64 bit Windows Server to Desktop or vice versa

  Hi All, Does anyone experience this problem of corrupted .WAR file after it has been copied over the network share ? this is .WAR file (Web Archive) the J2EE application file (.WAR file is compressed with the same zip algorithm i think ?) Scenario 1: Windows Server 2008 x64 transfer into Windows XP using RDP client (Local Devices and Resources) Scenario 2: Windows XP 32 bit transfer into Windows Server 2003 x64 using shared network drive (port 445 SMB ?) for both of the scenario it always failed / corrupted (the source code seems to be duplicated at the end of line when you open up in the Eclipse / Java IDE). but when in both scenario i compressed the file into .ZIP file everything is OK. can anyone explains why this problem happens ? So I'm now looking for semi-advanced tutorials that are complete and secure above anything else. I don't really mind trying a new distro, but I prefer ubuntu/debian.   Welcome, How can enable remote terminal login into Ubuntu 9.10 using usb-serial terminal ? I got created device ttyUSB0 and i want allow to log-in using hyper-terminal. I found some resources but they are related to real! hardware rs232 ports, i can't find any information about USB converter. Right now i have established connection between that usb-serial port and my laptop (i can send text writing to port cp sometext.txt /dev/ttyUSB0 and read using hyperterminal). Any idea ? Regards

• HP LasterJet P2035 not mapping on remote desktop

  I am connecting from a Windows 7 Pro laptop to a remote 64bit Windows 2008 R2 server via Remote Desktop. My local laptop has a networked HP LaserJet P2035 printer set as the default printer. When I connect to the server, the local (networked) HP printer does not get mapped on the server. I've installed the 64bit drivers from HP for the printer and was able to create a test printer on the server itself using the correct driver (HP LaserJet P2035) priting to a file. I've also checked the Printer under Local Resources tab on my Remote Desktop client. Does anyone know where else I should check to get my local printer to make to my remote desktop session?

  How can enable remote terminal login into Ubuntu 9.10 using a USB serial port? I created device /dev/ttyUSB0 and i want to allow logins using Hyper-Terminal. I found some resources but they are related to real hardware rs232 ports. I can't find any information about USB converter. So far I have established connection between that USB-serial port and my laptop. I can send text to the port (cp sometext.txt /dev/ttyUSB0) and read it using hyperterminal. What do I need to do to enable logins on this port?

• DB2 LUW tools for diagnosing issues when the stuff hits the fan

  I am no DBA and very much a novice when it comes to DB2 so even 'obvious' answers are welcome to this question: I love db2top but sometimes I cannot get it to run if the load average is high on a db2 LUW. This morning I was looking at an issue where load average shot up suddenly, I could not get db2top to come up and I needed to find out what was happening. What can I do to find out who is doing what in this situation? I suspected a horribly bad query was being run by someone...is there a good way to find information on poor performing SQL on the fly in that type of situation? Are there any good ways to collect good, actionable stats who/where bad sql is coming from in the event that load average is so high? I know about db2pd but I am not sure how to use it effectively and slogging through tens of thousands of lines of raw data is probably not the most efficient way to get at the heart of a problem. Any tips or resources?

• NAS disk - problem with accessing SAMBA

  Hello I have a NAS disk running on some version of Linux. The disk is located in local network (5 PC running XP or Vista, all connected to Linksys Router). I have problems accessing NAS resources through SAMBA. The 1st issue is that the NAS is not accessible through hostname (even if it is configured), 2nd point is that it is mostly not accessible through IP manner (\IP_OF_NAS). Rest of services (FTP, HTTP access) works flawlessly. I connected the NAS to my home network (only 1 WinXP and Linsys router) and the NAS is working fine - SAMBA access together with hostname recognition works perfectly. I wonder this is an issue with WINS? Could anybody help? Regards

  I'm just getting started with HAProxy and I was wondering if its possible to modify the request path for an HTTP request. One of the backend server uses Dropwizard and its assets bundle see here bundle. In my setup /xyz serves static assets /api/xyz serves REST resources With HAProxy I want requests from api.host.com/xyz to be sent to backend/api/xyz and requests from host.com to be sent to backend/ I've gotten most of that working but I can't figure out how to tell HAProxy to change the path, prepending /api/ to anything from api.host.com Is this possible or am I going about this the wrong way?

I want to use a Puppet to configure them and next try to setup OpenStack. I am not sure If I am understanding how this should look at the end.   We're looking into implementing Variable Envelope Return Path (VERP) for improved bounce processing for our application. Our current mail infrastructure is MS Exchange 2007 but are in the process of upgrading to 2010. We're also implementing Postini for spam filtering. Exchange doesn't support sub-addressing (see also this question on disposable addresses) -- and VERP is somewhat of a specialized application of sub-addressing. Are there any options for implementing VERP in Exchange without putting another non-Exchange SMTP relay in front of Exchange to pre-process incoming messages? Specifically could a transport rule be created that could match against the target (non-existing) recipient, store that recipient address in a special header added to the message, and redirect the message to a pre-created mailbox? Note: we have developer resources available if custom code could be used somehow.

  I'm looking for a good performance monitoring service for websites. I know about some of the available general monitoring services that check for uptime and notify you about unavailable services. But I'm specifically looking for a service with an emphasis on performance. I.e., I would like to see reports with detailed performance statistics from multiple locations world-wide, with a break-down on how long it took to fetch the different website resources, including third-party scripts such as Google Analytics and so on (the report should contain similar details such as the FireBug Net tab). Are there any such services and if so, which one is the best?

• Programs minimized for long time takes long time to "wake up"

  I'm working in Photoshop CS6 and multiple browsers a lot. I'm not using them all at once, so sometimes some applications are minimized to taskbar for hours or days. The problem is, when I try to maximize them from the taskbar - it sometimes takes longer than starting them! Especially Photoshop feels really weird for many seconds after finally showing up, it's slow, unresponsive and even sometimes totally freezes for minute or two. It's not a hardware problem as it's been like that since always on all on my PCs. Would I also notice it after upgrading my HDD to SDD and adding RAM (my main PC holds 4 GB currently)? Could guys with powerful pcs / macs tell me - does it also happen to you? I guess OSes somehow "focus" on active software and move all the resources away from the ones that run, but are not used. Is it possible to somehow set RAM / CPU / HDD priorities or something, for let's say, Photoshop, so it won't slow down after long period of inactivity?

• Can't create a registry key under Eventlog and I am in administrators group

  I am troubleshooting an installer problem where it's giving an error writing to a registry key. So when I use the Registry Editor (regedit) to create the same key under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Eventlog, I get a "Cannot create key: Error writing to the registry". Looking at the permissions, administrators have full access and I am a member of that group. I can create entries in other areas in the registry. When I try to take ownership, I see my name already listed. But then I get an error "Unable to set new owner on Eventlog. Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service". I tried after a new reboot. I turned off my firewall (Comodo). Why can't I create a new key when I am an admin and permissions indicate I have full control?

• How to create a Linux Media Server using Ubuntu?

  Hello all: I'm an intermediate Linux user and a relative beginner to servers. I would like some help finding resources on setting up a basic server. I have Googled, and am a member of the Ubuntu Forums, but just figure it can't hurt to ask the Stack Overflow community for help as well. I plan on installing on an old laptop (Lenovo Thinkpad R61i or Toshiba Satellite A105). I have downloaded the latest Ubuntu (9.10) but don't know how to do any of the configurations. I just want a server to store my files where I can access (download and/ or stream) from a browser. Any help you can give is greatly appreciated. Thanks! Thomas
