  I am attempting to install SQL Server Express (as part of the Visual Studio 2010 Professional installation), but it is failing. I am receiving this error log. • Help Installing SQL Server 2008 Express Edition

  Ok I am running Windows 7, 64 bit. I cleaned of SQL server 2005 completely off my system leaving only SQL Compact Edition. I went here http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=01af61e6-2f63-4291-bcad-fd500f6027ff&displaylang=en and installed SQL Server 2008 Express Edition Service Pack 1. After the install, under my start bar menu all i have for SQL configuration tools are the Configuration Manager, Error and Usage Reporting and the Install Center. I don't have the SQL Managment Studio. So I went here http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=08e52ac2-1d62-45f6-9a4a-4b76a8564a2b&displaylang=en and downloaded the SQL Server 2008 Management Studio Express but when I try to install it I get a warning says This program has known compatibility issues and that I need to Install SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1. I thought that is what I installed. So, I tried to continue running the install but I then get an error message that says Invoke or BeginInvoke can not be called on a Form before it is opened... How can I check if Service pack 1 is installed or not? What should I do? Also I rebooted my system and checked for Windows Updates and it says that Windows it up to date.

• Router reporting failed admin login attempts from home server

  I recently noticed in the logs of my home router that it relatively regularly lists the following entry: [admin login failure] from source 192.168.0.160, Monday, June 20,2011 18:13:25 192.168.0.160 is the internal address of my home server, running Windows Home Server 2011. Is there anyway I can find out what specifically is trying to login to the router? Or is there some explanation for this behaviour? (not sure if this belongs here or on superuser...) [Update] I've run both Wireshark and netmon for a while on my home server. Wireshark captured the traffic, but didn't really show anything useful (or nothing I could make use of). A simple HTTP GET request is sent from the server (192.168.0.160) to the router (192.168.0.1), from a seemingly random port (I've seen examples from 50068, 52883), and it appears to do it twice in quick succession (incrementing port by 1), about every hour. Running netstat around the time of the failure didn't show anything (probably too long after anyway). I tried using netmon as it categorises by process, so I thought it might show a corresponding process for the port. Unfortunately, this comes in under the 'unknown' category, meaning it's basically just a slower, less useful Wireshark. I know there's not much to go on here, but does this help in anyway?

• PCs on domain can not resolve external IP addresses using the DC's DNS Server

  I currently have a domain controller which handles all DHCP and DNS. The DHCP works just fine and the domain controller itself can use the internet with no issues. However, PCs that are part of the domain are not able to use external websites, only internal. Does anyone have any way I can solve this issue? • Access server using IP on another interface

  I am using Windows Server 2012 instead of a router for my home network. Currently I am using RRAS and computers from local network can access Internet correctly. Here is a map of the current setup: [PC1] ---| |---- (lan ip)[Server](wan ip)--> internet [PC2] ---| I have applications running on Server, such as IIS and others. All can be accessed from internet using wan ip and from lan using lan ip. I have a domain, lets say its my-domain.com, which is resolved to my wan ip. What I want is to enable my LAN computers to be able to connect to services on my server using the very same address as internet users: eg http://my-domain.com/. However this does not work for my lan computers. What I understand is that I need to set up some kind of loopback route in a way that packets comming to LAN interface get routed to WAN interface. But I haven't found how to achieve this (in fact, I don't know WHAT to search for). Feel free to ask for additional informations and I will try to update the question.

• Windows Home Server 2011, No disks "suitable for a backup destination"

  I recently installed Windows Home Server 2011 and love it. However, when I try to set up server backups, it says no suitable disks are available. Initially, before I set up my RAID, it found one of my twin drives and said it would work. Once I set up the mirroring, that one is no longer available (obviously). However, I have an internal SATA 1TB drive and an external USB2.0 1TB drive hooked up. Both are recognized by Disk Management. WHS11 still says nothing suitable for backups. The two drives details are as follows: Edit to clarify: The system partition is on Disk 0, not listed below. The two below are the two that SHOULD be available for system backups. Disk 1: Dynamic "Data" (D:) 931.51 GB NTFS, Healthy Disk 3: Basic 200 MB Healthy (EFI System Partition) "Backup" 930.66 GB NTFS, Healthy (Primary Partition) What's a bit odd is that in Disk Management the "Backup" volume does not show a drive letter, even though I assigned Z: (which is reflected in "My Computer". I also cannot make this a dynamic disk as it says it's unsupported by the device.

• In Social Relationship Management, the Spirit is Willing, but Execution is Weak

  In our final talk in this series with Aberdeen’s Trip Kucera, we wanted to find out if enterprise organizations are actually doing anything about what they’re learning around the importance of communicating via social and using social listening for a deeper understanding of customers and prospects. We found out that if your brand is lagging behind, you’re not alone. Spotlight: How was Aberdeen able to find out if companies are putting their money where their mouth is when it comes to implementing social across the enterprise? Trip: One way to think about the relative challenges a business has in a given area is to look at the gap between “say” and “do.” The first of those words reveals the brand’s priorities, while the second reveals their ability to execute on those priorities. In Aberdeen’s research, we capture this by asking firms to rank the value of a set of activities from one on the low end to five on the high end. We then ask them to rank their ability to execute those same activities, again on a one to five, not effective to highly effective scale. Spotlight: And once you get their self-assessments, what is it you’re looking for? Trip: There are two things we’re looking for in this analysis. The first is we want to be able to identify the widest gaps between perception of value and execution. This suggests impediments to adoption or simply a high level of challenge, be it technical or otherwise. It may also suggest areas where we can expect future investment and innovation. Spotlight: So the biggest potential pain points surface, places where they know something is critical but also know they aren’t doing much about it. What’s the second thing you look for? Trip: The second thing we want to do is look at specific areas in which high-performing companies, the Leaders, are out-executing the Followers. This points to the business impact of these activities since Leaders are defined by a set of business performance metrics. Put another way, we’re correlating adoption of specific business competencies with performance, looking for what high-performers do differently. Spotlight: Ah ha, that tells us what steps the winners are taking that are making them winners. So what did you find out? Trip: Generally speaking, we see something of a glass curtain when it comes to the social relationship management execution gap. There isn’t a single social media activity in which more than 50% of respondents indicated effectiveness, which would be a 4 or 5 on that 1-5 scale. This despite the fact that 70% of firms indicate that generating positive social media mentions is valuable or very valuable, a 4 or 5 on our 1-5 scale. Spotlight: Well at least they get points for being honest. The verdict they’re giving themselves is that they just aren’t cutting it in these highly critical social development areas. Trip: And the widest gap is around directly engaging with customers and/or prospects on social networks, which 69% of firms rated as valuable but only 34% of companies say they are executing well. Perhaps even more interesting is that these two are interdependent since you’re most likely to generate goodwill on social through happy, engaged customers. This data also suggests that social is largely being used as a broadcast channel rather than for one-to-one engagement. As we’ve discussed previously, social is an inherently personal media. Spotlight: And if they’re still using it as a broadcast channel, that shows they still fail to understand the root of social and see it as just another outlet for their ads and push-messaging. That’s depressing. Trip: A second way to evaluate this data is by using Aberdeen’s performance benchmarking. The story is both a bit different, but consistent in its own way. The first thing we notice is that Leaders are more effective in their execution of several key social relationship management capabilities, namely generating positive mentions and engaging with “influencers” and customers. Based on the fact that Aberdeen uses a broad set of performance metrics to rank the respondents as either “Leaders” (top 35% in weighted performance) or “Followers” (bottom 65% in weighted performance), from website conversion to annual revenue growth, we can then correlated high social effectiveness with company performance. We can also connect the specific social capabilities used by Leaders with effectiveness. We spoke about a few of those key capabilities last time and also discuss them in a new report: Social Powers Activate: Engineering Social Engagement to Win the Hidden Sales Cycle. Spotlight: What all that tells me is there are rewards for making the effort and getting it right. That’s how you become a Leader. Trip: But there’s another part of the story, which is that overall effectiveness, even among Leaders, is muted. There’s just one activity in which more than a majority of Leaders cite high effectiveness, effectiveness being the generation of positive buzz. While 80% of Leaders indicate “directly engaging with customers” through social media channels is valuable, the highest rated activity among Leaders, only 42% say they’re effective. • How to install Snow Leopard Server over Regular Snow Leopard

  I'm in the ADC so I have legitimate access to a free copy of Snow Leopard Server and licence key which I need to use to test my Push Notifications. I downloaded the software, and when I opened the .dmg I saw "Click to install Snow Leopard Server" which I did, and then it prompted me to restart the computer to begin installation. When the computer restarted, however, it just booted into my regular OS X partition. I kept trying to no avail. Obviously I'm missing something stupid here but I'm not a server admin so I don't know what to do :) The dmg is almost 6GB so I can't burn a DVD of it. I really need your help! Thanks guys!

  Does Windows Server 2008 have hardware acceleration? I tried to use WPF to make over 20,000 drawings. It only cause around 40% CPU in windows 7. However, I run the same program on Windows Server 2008 with the same hardware configuration except that it has a dedicated graphical display card (GT 9500) while Windows 7 has only an onboard display card, it cause over 80% CPU. So, does Windows Server 2008 have hardware acceleration? Or could I make it? And how do I change the hardware acceleration setting? Thanks.

What I should have done was to install Ubuntu Server, since I don't even own a screen to connect to it. Does anybody know of a way to convert my Ubuntu machine to a Ubuntu Server machine in one big swoop? It has to be done over SSH, since I don't have a screen to connect to it, like I said. It's currently running 9.10, about to be upgraded to 10.4.

  I have a database in dev (SQL Server 2005 on Windows Server 2008) that I need to move to prod (SQL Server 2000 on Windows Server 2003). My process is as follows: Login to dev, open SQL Server Management Studio Right click on the database | Tasks | Backup. Keep all default options (full backup etc.) Move .bak file locally to prod (no network drive), login to prod, open SQL Server Enterprise Manager. Right click Databases node | All Tasks | Restore database. Change Restore as database to reflect the same database name. Click radio button 'From device'. Click 'Select Devices' Click Restore from: Add..., browse to .bak file (small - only 6mb) Now I am ready to restore the database, so I click OK and get the following error: "The media family on device 'E:...bak' is incorrectly formed. SQL Server cannot process this media family. RESTORE DATABASE is terminating abnormally." This error is immediate. I have tried a few different variations of this - restoring the db to dev machine with a different db name and log file names (where it originated), creating an empty database with the same physical path to files before and trying to restore to that, making a few different .bak files and making sure they are verified before uploading them to prod. I know for a fact the directory for the .mdf and .ldf files exist on prod, though the files themselves don't exist. If, before I click OK to restore, go to the options tab instead I get the following error: Error 3241: The media family on device 'E:...bak' is incorrectly formed. SQL Server cannot process this media family. RESTORE FILELIST is terminating abnormally. Anyone have any bright ideas?

  Currently migrating from SQL Server to PostgreSQL and attempting to improve a couple of key areas on the way: I have an Articles table: CREATE TABLE [dbo].[Articles]( [server_ref] [int] NOT NULL, [article_ref] [int] NOT NULL, [article_title] [varchar](400) NOT NULL, [category_ref] [int] NOT NULL, [size] [bigint] NOT NULL ) Data (comma delimited text files) is dumped on the import server by ~500 (out of ~1000) servers on a daily basis. Importing: Indexes are disabled on the Articles table. For each dumped text file Data is BULK copied to a temporary table. Temporary table is updated. Old data for the server is dropped from the Articles table. Temporary table data is copied to Articles table. Temporary table dropped. Once this process is complete for all servers the indexes are built and the new database is copied to a web server. I am reasonably happy with this process but there is always room for improvement as I strive for a real-time (haha!) system. Is what I am doing correct? The Articles table contains ~500 million records and is expected to grow. Searching across this table is okay but could be better. i.e. SELECT * FROM Articles WHERE server_ref=33 AND article_title LIKE '%criteria%' has been satisfactory but I want to improve the speed of searching. Obviously the "LIKE" is my problem here. Suggestions? SELECT * FROM Articles WHERE article_title LIKE '%criteria%' is horrendous. Partitioning is a feature of SQL Server Enterprise but $$$ which is one of the many exciting prospects of PostgreSQL. What performance hit will be incurred for the import process (drop data, insert data) and building indexes? Will the database grow by a huge amount? The database currently stands at 200 GB and will grow. Copying this across the network is not ideal but it works. I am putting thought into changing the hardware structure of the system. The thought process of having an import server and a web server is so that the import server can do the dirty work (WITHOUT indexes) while the web server (WITH indexes) can present reports. Maybe reducing the system down to one server would work to skip the copying across the network stage. This one server would have two versions of the database: one with the indexes for delivering reports and the other without for importing new data. The databases would swap daily. Thoughts? This is a fantastic system, and believe it or not there is some method to my madness by giving it a big shake up. UPDATE: I am not looking for help with relational databases, but hoping to bounce ideas around with data warehouse experts.

  So I installed Windows Server 2008 R2, I have Exchange 2010 running for some mail. I installed BlackBerry Enterprise Server Express for kicks. This server runs dns/dhcp for 2 laptops. But what now? It has 200g's free on the main drive and a 150g external that I have mapped as a network drive. I am not sure what else to do with this thing. It was my main station but since my laptop is nicer I am running it headless and using the lcd monitor for it as a second monitor for the laptop when I am at home.

  I've got SQL server running on a machine which is not in a domain, and which is not operating in mixed mode (it's running with "Windows Authentication"). I'm trying to connect to it from a Linux web server running freetds via TCP/IP, using NTLM to authenticate. The firewall on the SQL server is very restrictive. 1433 is open to my web server, but I'm getting conflicting information from the web on what additional ports (TCP/UDP) are needed for NTLM to succeed. It is currently fail; I can talk on 1433 to request NTLM, but the actual authentication always fails. One source says 137, 138, 139, but those are just the NetBIOS ports. Do I really need those?
