• Calling a method at a specific interval rate in C++

  This is really annoying me as I have done it before, about a year ago and I cannot for the life of me remember what library it was. Basically, the problem is that I want to be able to call a method a certain number of times or for a certain period of time at a specified interval. One example would be I would like to call a method "x" starting from now, 10 times, once every 0.5 seconds. Alternatively, call method "x" starting from now, 10 times, until 5 seconds have passed. Now I thought I used a boost library for this functionality but I can't seem to find it now and feeling a bit annoyed. Unfortunately I can't look at the code again as I'm not in possession of it any more. Alternatively, I could have dreamt this all up and it could have been proprietary code. Assuming there is nothing out there that does what I would like, what is currently the best way of producing this behaviour? It would need to be high-resolution, up to a millisecond. It doesn't matter if it blocks the thread that it is executed from or not. Thanks!

• iPhone OpenGLES: Textures are consuming too much memory and the program crashes with signal "0"

  I am not sure what the problem is. My app is running fine on the simulator but when I try to run it on the iPhone it crashes during debugging or without debugging with signal "0". I am using the Texture2D.m and OpenGLES2DView.m from the examples provided by Apple. I profiled the app on the iPhone with Instruments using the Memory tracer from the Library and when the app died the final memory consumed was about 60Mb real and 90+Mb virtual. Is there some other problem or is the iPhone just killing the application because it has consumed too much memory? If you need any information please state it and I will try to provide it. I am creating thousands of textures at load time which is why the memory consumption is so high. Really cant do anything about reducing the number of pics being loaded. I was running before on just UIImage but it was giving me really low frame rates. I read on this site that I should use OpenGLES for higher frame rates. Also sub question is there any way not to use UIImage to load the png file and then use the Texture class provided to create the texture for OpenGLES functions to use it for drawing? Is there some function in OpenGLES which will create a texture straight from a png file?

• How do i implement tag searching with lucene?

  I havent used lucene. Last time i ask (many months ago, maybe a year) people suggested lucene. As am example say there are 3 items tag like this apples carrots apples carrots apple banana if a user search apples i dont care if there is any preference from 1,2 and 4. However i seen many forums do this which i hated is when a user search apple carrots 2 and 3 are get high results while 1 is hard to find even though it matches my search more closely. I HATED this in forums. Also i would like the ability to do search carrots -apples which will only get me 3. I am not sure what should happen if i search carrots banana but anyways as long as more 2 and 3 results are lower priority then 1 when i search apples carrots i'll be happy. Can lucene do this? and where do i start? i see a lot of classes and many of them talk about docs. What should i use for tagging?

• Small Open source and free java applications

  I am a Perl Developer who has just stepped into the Java world and I want to be very proficient in Java EE development. However, I have found that, being a Perl guy, I have very high MTI(Mother Tongue Influence). Indians will know what MTI is. For others, it can be defined as an influence of your "main" language whenever you "speak" your new language. In other words, our mind converts/translates what we want to "say" in the new language based on the "main" language, which can be quite absurd or meaning less in the "new" language. Coming back to the point, as a result of this MTI, many lines of my code has this Perl influence and it is absurd and useless for production. Hence, I'd like to see or better do some research on existing small to medium open source java applications, so that I will know how I can "speak" in the native way of the "new" language. Some examples in PHP will be : WordPress, Zend etc. So I'd really appreciate if you guys could suggest any such apps. Apps that have a great commercial value are highly preferred

According to Apple, iPhone 4 has a new screen resolution: 3.5-inch (diagonal) widescreen Multi-Touch display 960-by-640-pixel resolution at 326 ppi This little detail affects our apps in a heavy way. Most of the demo apps on the net have one thing in common: They position views in the believe that the screen has a fixed size of 320 x 480 pixels. So what most -if not all- developers do is: They designed everything in such a way, that a touchable area is -for example- 50 x 50 pixels big. Just enough to tap it. Things have been positioned relative to the upper left, to reach a specific position on screen - let's say the center, or somewhere at the bottom. Edit: It seems Apple has integrated an switch that allows to tell if an app is highRes or not. Nice. When we develop high-resolution apps, probably they won't work on older devices. And if they did, they would suffer a lot from 4-times the size of any image, having to scale them down in memory. This is community wiki. Just add anything that you think is relevant to this huge problem (constant screen res was one of the main reasons why I didn't go for Android!!).

• R Tree 50,000 foot overview?

  I'm working on a school project that involves taking a lat/long point and finding the top five closest points in a known list of places. The list is to be stored in memory, with the caveat that we must choose an "appropriate data structure" -- that is, we cannot simply store all the places in an array and compare distances one-by-one in a linear fashion. The teacher suggested grouping the place data by US State to prevent calculating the distance for places that are obviously too far away. I think I can do better. From my research online it seems like an R-Tree or one of its variants might be a neat solution. Unfortunately, that sentence is as far as I've gotten with understanding the actual technique, as the literature is simply too dense for my non-academic head. Can somebody give me a really high overview of what the process is for populating an R-Tree with lat/long data, and then traversing the tree to find those 5 nearest neighbors of a given point? Additionally the project is in C, and I don't have to reinvent the wheel on this, so if you've used an existing open source C implementation of an R Tree I'd be interested in your experiences.

• sIFR 3 randomly placing text on a single line in FF3.6

  Hello, sIFR 3 is behaving strangely in Firefox. The actual sIFR flash element is set within a box that is 412px wide. In IE, Chrome, Safari, etc., the with of the Flash element is a consistent 412px; however, in Firefox, the Flash element is briefly as wide as the Body element, before correcting itself. When the page finishes loading, sometimes the Flash element remains that wide, breaking the layout (the Flash text flows underneath the sidebar to the right). Setting a width in the CSS for the .sIFR-flash element causes it to remain the proper 412px wide, but the text doesn't wrap at all--it just cuts off at the right edge, and the height of the flash element remains one line high. The markup is simple; it's just an h2 within a div. • File upload fails when user is authenticated. Using IIS7 Integrated mode.

  These are the user identities my website tells me that it uses: Logged on: NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE (Can not write any files at all) and Not logged on: WSW32\IUSR_77 (Can write files to any folder) I have a ASP.NET 4.0 website on a shared hosting IIS7 web server running in Integrated mode with 32-bit applications support enabled and MSSQL 2008. Using classic mode is not an option since I need to secure some static files and I use Routing. In my web.config file I have set the following: <system.webServer> <modules runAllManagedModulesForAllRequests="true" /> </system.webServer> My hosting company says that Impersonation is enabled by default on machine level, so this is not something I can change. I asked their support and they referred me to this article: http://www.codinghub.net/2010/08/differences-between-integrated-mode-and.html Citing this part: Different windows identity in Forms authentication When Forms Authentication is used by an application and anonymous access is allowed, the Integrated mode identity differs from the Classic mode identity in the following ways: * ServerVariables["LOGON_USER"] is filled. * Request.LogognUserIdentity uses the credentials of the [NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE] account instead of the [NT AUTHORITY\INTERNET USER] account. This behavior occurs because authentication is performed in a single stage in Integrated mode. Conversely, in Classic mode, authentication occurs first with IIS 7.0 using anonymous access, and then with ASP.NET using Forms authentication. Thus, the result of the authentication is always a single user-- the Forms authentication user. AUTH_USER/LOGON_USER returns this same user because the Forms authentication user credentials are synchronized between IIS 7.0 and ASP.NET. A side effect is that LOGON_USER, HttpRequest.LogonUserIdentity, and impersonation no longer can access the Anonymous user credentials that IIS 7.0 would have authenticated by using Classic mode. • I just discovered why all ASP.Net websites are slow, and I am trying to work out what to do about it

  I just discovered that every request in an ASP.Net web application gets a Session lock at the begging of a request, and then releases it at the end of the request!!! I mean, WTF Microsoft! In case the implication is lost on you, as it was from me at first, this basically means the following: Anytime an ASP.Net webpage is taking a long time to load (maybe due to a slow database call or whatever), and the user decides they want to navigate to a different page because they are tired of waiting, THEY CANT! The ASP.Net session lock forces the new page request to wait until the original request has finished its painfully slow load. Arrrgh. Anytime an UpdatePanel is loading slowly, and the user decides to navigate to a different page before the UpdadePanel has finished updating... THEY CANT! The ASP.Net session lock forces the new page request to wait until the original request has finished its painfully slow load. Double Arrrgh! So what are the options? So far I have come up with: Implement a Custom SessionStateDataStore, which ASP.Net supports. I haven't found too many out there to copy, and it seems kind of high risk and easy to mess up. Keep track of all requests in progress, and if a request comes in from the same user, cancel the original request. Seems kind of extreme, but it would work (I think) Don't user Session! When I need some kind of state for the user, I could just user Cache instead, and key items on the authenticated user's name, or some such thing. Again seems kind of extreme I really can't believe that the ASP.Net Microsoft team would have left such a huge performance bottleneck in the framework at version 4.0! Am I missing something obvious? How hard would it be to use a ThreadSafe collection for the Session? Arrrrghhhhhh. Any advice much appreciated.

Well after everyones VERY VERY helpful advice (thank you guys alot) I managed to get over half of the program running how I wanted. Everything is pointing in the arrays where I want them to go. Now I just need to access the arrays so that It prints the correct information randomly. • How can I copy files in the middle of a build in Team System?

  I have two solutions that I want to include in a build. Solution two requires the dll's from solution one to successfully build. Solution two has a Binaries folder where the dll's from solution one need to be copied before building Solution two. I've been trying an AfterBuild Target, hoping that it would copy the items after the first SolutionToBuild, but it doesn't fire then. • What data stucture should I use for BigInt class

  I would like to implement a BigInt class which will be able to handle really big numbers. I want only to add and multiply numbers, however the class should also handle negative numbers. I wanted to represent the number as a string, but there is a big overhead with converting string to int and back for adding. I want to implement addition as on the high school, add corresponding order and if the result is bigger than 10, add the carry to next order. Then I thought that it would be better to handle it as a array of unsigned long long int and keep the sign separated by bool. With this I'm afraid of size of the int, as C++ standard as far as I know guarantees only that int < float < double. Correct me if I'm wrong. So when I reach some number I should move in array forward and start adding number to the next array position. Is there any data structure that is appropriate or better for this? Thanks in advance.

• Dijit.Dialog irregular behaviour of scroll bar making dialog box unusable

  I use a dojo dialog box to display a page pulled from another part of the site. The page being pulled is long - so I use the css attribute: `max-height: 900px; overflow:auto; To make sure it displays properly. For a long page, it displays a 900px high dialog box with a scrollbar down the right hand side side. However the scrollbar is going up to the dialog box title and shifting the close box icon to the left. In internet explorer, when a user moves his mouse of the close box icon, it moves to the right. If you move your mouse to the right it moves left - so you can never actually close the box with the icon. I have tried clearing the content in the box and just making it very long, and the same thing still happens. Oddly enough, if I close the window using esc and click pull up the dialog box again, it works fine. Any way I can make it display properly at all times. I am using Dojo version 1.3. Thanks

• Good Hosting Providers With Zend Framework Support

  I currently use ixwebhosting for my hosting services. They're cheap and work (most of the time). The databases are horribly slow, the servers are horribly slow, and their support (though usually prompt) is tough to deal with. That being said, they're cheap, I've got like 20 domains hosted in my account, none of them are high volume, and they work JUST good enough- until today. This isn't meant to be a condemnation of ixwh though. Their prices are very low for what they do offer and most things work just fine, most of the time. I need to be able to host web apps written with Zend Framework in a fairly easy fashion. The server performance can't be worse than what I've already had (a pretty low hurdle to clear), and I don't want to spend $30/mo. These are not money making websites- they're projects. My requirements are PHP 5.3, ZF support, MySQL databases, multiple domains- not much. Who should I look at, and who should I look out for? Also- I put this on SO instead of SF because of the Zend Framework specific requirement. If I'm wrong, do as you wish.

  I have a requirement for the project I'm working on right now which is proving a bit tricky for me. Basically I have to sort an array of items based on the Text property of those items: Here are my items: var answers = [], answer1 = { Id: 1, Text: '3-4 weeks ago' }, answer2 = { Id: 2, Text: '1-2 weeks ago' }, answer3 = { Id: 3, Text: '7-8 weeks ago' }, answer4 = { Id: 4, Text: '5-6 weeks ago' }, answer5 = { Id: 5, Text: '1-2 days ago' }, answer6 = { Id: 6, Text: 'More than 1 month ago' }; answers.push(answer1); answers.push(answer2); answers.push(answer3); answers.push(answer4); answers.push(answer5); answers.push(answer6); I need to analyse the Text property of each item so that, after the sorting, the array looks like this: answers[0] = { Id: 6, Text: 'More than 1 month ago' } answers[1] = { Id: 3, Text: '7-8 weeks ago' } answers[2] = { Id: 4, Text: '5-6 weeks ago' } answers[3] = { Id: 1, Text: '3-4 weeks ago' } answers[4] = { Id: 2, Text: '1-2 weeks ago' } answers[5] = { Id: 5, Text: '1-2 days ago' } The logic is that, the furthest away the date, the more high priority it is, so it should appear first in the array. So "1-2 days" is less of a priority then "7-8 weeks". So the logic is that, I need to extract the number values, and then the units (e.g. days, weeks) and somehow sort the array based on those details. Quite honestly I'm finding it very difficult to come up with a solution, and I'd appreciate any help.

In IE8 the video harness doesn't even appear. Is HTML 5 just not supported enough to accomplish this yet? Edit: Got this to work with Artiom's fix. Looks like this works fine with Chrome and Safari. I'm using a codec Firefox doesn't support, so it doesn't work there; although I suspect it will work with a supported codec. IE8 sure enough doesn't work (high five IE).

• Expose webservice directly to webclients or keep a thin server-side script layer in between?

  Hi, I'm developing a REST webservice (Java, Jersey). The people I'm doing this for want to directly access the webservice via Javascript. Some instinct tells me this is not a good idea, but I cannot really explain that instinct. My natural approach would have been to have the webservice do the real logic and database access, but also have some (relatively thin) server-side script layer (e.g. in PHP). Clients would talk to the PHP layer which in turn would talk to the webservice. (The webservice would be pretty local to the apache/PHP server and implicitly trust calls from the script layer. The script layer would take care of session management.) (Btw, I am not talking about just hiding the webservice behind an Apache which simply redirects calls.) But as I find myself at a lack of words/arguments to explain my instinct, I wonder whether my instinct is right - note that while I have been developing all kinds of software in all kinds of languages and frameworks for like 17 years, this is the first time I develop a webservice. So my question is basically: what are your opinions? Are there any standard setups? Is my instinct totally wrong? Or partially? ;P Many thanks, Max PS: I might add a few bits of information about the planned usage of the whole application: will be accessed by different kinds of users, partly general public, partly privileged thus, all major OS/browser combinations can be expected as clients however, writing the client is not my responsibility will potentially have very high load/traffic logic of webservice will later be massively expanded for another product which is basically a superset of the functionality of the current project there is a significant likelihood that at some point an API should be exposed which can be used by 3rd party developers - obviously, with some restrictions at some point, the public view of the product should become accessible via smartphones, too (in other words, maybe a customized version of the site to adapt to the smaller display and different input methods)

• Very simple code for number search gives me infinite loop

  Hello, I am a newbie Computer Science high school student and I have trouble with a small snippet of code. Basically, my code should perform a basic CLI search in an array of integers. However, what happens is I get what appears to be an infinite loop (BlueJ, the compiler I'm using, gets stuck and I have to reset the machine).   Hi, i'm making a questionnaire about a service quality, its contains the options (poor, regular, good, very good). It's contains 6 questions (radio button) and a suggestion box (textbox). In the table of the database i created 6 rows for questions, 1 for suggestion and 1 for date (a friend of mine tole me to use this but i didn't get why). q1) I'm going to atribute a value form 1 to 4 to the radio buttons options, and i'd like to sum every answer for each question, and then divide by the numbers of user that answered that question and give the mean. how am i supposed to to that? I'd also like generate reports of the month, of the year. q2) not only about the questionnaire but for registration too. I need all the fields to be completed, no blank options, if he don't complete all of fields it'll not be submitted and there will be a warning message to the user. q3) about the field type, i'd like it to be the same class that is in the database, i'm having a "problem". Ex: Name(varchar) : 1234(int), in the field 'name' of the table of the database 1234 will be shown as name, and i don't want this, i want only the type that i declared in the construction of the table. q4) i'd also like to know if it's possible to create pizza graphics, about the percentage of each question, is this possible? q5) I'm using phpmyadmin and some of my id's are auto_increment, but 'cause of my tests they at a high number, i'd like to restart to 0 the ids number, is this possible? • firefox does not load large size images

  I am stuck with a kind of bug in FF, wherein it’s unable to load images of big size (I have 8 MB size of image) from the server. The loading of image is all fine on IE. I am still looking out for ways to get rid of this problem. I changed server(IIS) settings to allow bigger file sizes. Also, I used “load” event on image using JQuery and tried all sort of options listed here http://api.jquery.com/load-event/, but nothing worked so far. • jQuery Fancy - popup window doesn't fully expand

  I am using jQuery Fancybox to display a number of Flash videos on a site and I am having trouble with the window not opening fully on the first click in Firefox. It works fine in other browsers. • Quickly accessing files in a 'project'

  Hi all. I'm looking for a way to quickly open files in my project's source tree. What I've been doing so far is adding files to the file-name-cache like so: (file-cache-add-directory-recursively (concat project-root "some/sub/folder") ".*\\.\\(py\\)$") after which I can use anything-for-files to access any file in the source tree with about 4 keystrokes. Unfortunately, this solution started falling over today. I've added another folder to the cache and emacs has started running out of memory. What's weird is that this folder contains less than 25% of files I'm adding, and yet emacs memory use goes up from 20mb to 400mb on adding just this folder. The total number of files is around 2000, so this memory use seems very high. Presumably I'm abusing the file cache. Anyway, what do other people do for this? I like this solution for its simplicity and speed; I've looked at some of the many, many project management packages for emacs and none of them really grabbed me... Thanks in advance! Simon

• Panel in Windows Forms Application not clearing

  I'm working on my project: [Beer Pong Management System][1], a Windows Forms application. I am currently trying to add a whole tournament mode to it. In a nutshell, I've created a TabControl, with the first tab page with the settings and setup and the second page the brackets. There is a feature for each of the match-ups, that once there is a winner is decided, a yellow cancel button will appear in order to revert the tournament. However my issue is when i click the button the next match-up does not get removed in the series is going. See below: Image Here(not high enough rep to insert image) I have tried to set the MatchUp to null, I've tried dispose(), close(). even Parent.Controls.Remove(). Even after I switch tabs which is supposed to clear all, they still sit there when i come back. I have a feeling I might be loosing a reference or something because I can't even push new teams into them, they just sit there with their buttons.
