  • Searching for SD-cards

    - by Shaddix
I need to implement searching for SD-cards in my program. Currently I'm using search for all removable devices like: searcher = New Management.ManagementObjectSearcher("\\localhost\root\cimv2", "SELECT DeviceId FROM Win32_LogicalDisk WHERE DriveType=2 AND Size>0"); But it find USB flash drives also. Is there a proper way to find SD-cards only? What I need is in general only drive letter for available SD-cards (like "F:" or so).

  • get url:xml why external url does not work

    - by Kazim Cubbali
I am trying to grab information from an external xml with the following code. It only worked when I uploaded same file to my servers. Why cant I grab information from an external url? <script language="javascript"> // This script uses jQuery to retrieve the news XML file and display the contents $(document).ready(function(){ $.ajax({ type: "GET", url: "www.simplyprofound.com/samples/xml_jquery/sample.xml", dataType: "xml", success: function(xml) { $(xml).find('item').each(function(){ var title = $(this).find('title').text(); var source = $(this).find('source').text(); var description = $(this).find('description').text(); $('<div class="news_title"></div>').html(title).appendTo('#news_wrap'); $('<div class="news_source"></div>').html(source).appendTo('#news_wrap'); $('<div class="news_description"></div>').html(description).appendTo('#news_wrap'); }); } }); }); </script>

  • Multithreading, when to yield versus sleep

    - by aaa
hello. To clarify terminology, yield is when thread gives up its time slice. My platform of interest is POSIX threads, but I think question is general. Suppose I have consumer/producer pattern. If I want to throttle either consumer or producer, which is better to use, sleep or yield? I am mostly interested in efficiency of using either function. Thanks

  • What are your feelings on JavaFX?

    - by ForYourOwnGood
I currently do a lot of work in ActionScript 3.0, I also love to program in Java. Is JavaFX perfect for me? What is the general feeling on JavaFX, will it become a power house, or go down the same path as Java Applets? Could the designers I work with become comfortable with JavaFX to the same extent they are comfortable with ActionScript and JavaScript?

  • HOWTO use UIWebView to display a downloaded file later?

    - by Roboprog
How do I format an NSURL (what path, or path generator function) so that I can display a downloaded local file (NOT part of the application NSBundle) for use offline? The idea is to snag an HTML file, clean it up and stash it in the iFoo application specific storage area, then later use UIWebView to display it. Next, I go off to RTFM about working with files on iFoo (iPhone / iPad) in general, but any fast-start tips are appreciated.

  • Agile Whiteboard Software

    - by PaddyC
Can anyone recommend decent software that could replace a physical whiteboard, as used in Agile development? I've had a look at http://www.brightgreenprojects.com/ but ideally we'd like something we could host ourselves. We use Jira for issue tracking, and are looking at integrating GreenHopper for project management at the moment. The general feeling among users so far seems to be that GreenHopper is a little clunky. Is there a more straight-forward agile whiteboard software tool out there?

  • Does the usage of interfaces slow down programs?

    - by Olga
Is it true that interfaces slow down programs? I have heard that this is the case because during running time each during each usage of an object implementing this interface the decision has to be made which class implementing the interface this object belongs to. I am especially interested in an answer for C++, but also in general. And if this is true, some numbers would be helpful, too. Thank you very much!

Any input is greatly appreciated. Im not sure how Id mark the best answer, perhaps leave it to the community to vote for it.

  • Intents? How to register to be alerted for incoming emails?

    - by Justin
Extreme Android developer newbie here...well, new to Android development, not development in general. I want to write an application that gets notified when emails come into the device, and takes various actions based on data in the email (subject, sender, to, etc). I think what I have to do is create a BroadcastReceiver with an IntentFilter. The problem I'm having is figuring out what Intent(s) I need to "listen" for. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks.

  • Is there a way to specify wildcarded region names when using ehcache with hibernate?

    - by bkent314
When using Ehcache with Hibernate, is there a way to specify region names with wildcards in the ehcache.xml file? For example, to allow for cache settings at the package level (with * as a wildcard indicator): <cache name="com.example.my.package1.*" ... /> <cache name="com.example.my.package2.*" ... /> (Note: The package-level distinction is just an example. My question is to wildcards in the general case.)

  • How do I strip local symbols from linux kernel module without breaking it?

    - by Kimvais
If I do --strip-debug or --strip-unneeded, I have the .ko that lists all function names with nm, if I do just strip foo.ko I have a kernel module that refuses to load. Does anyone know a quick shortcut how to remove all symbols that are not needed for module loading so that people cannot reverse engineer the API:s as easily? PS: For all you open source bigots; this is something that general public will never be using in any case so no need to turn the question into a GPL flame war.

  • The internal implementation of R's dataset

    - by Yin Zhu
I am trying to build a data processing program. Currently I use a double matrix to represent the data table, each row is an instance, each column represents a feature. I also have an extra vector as the target value for each instance, it is of double type for regression, it is of integer for classification. I want to make it more general. I am wondering how what kind of structure R uses to store a dataset, i.e. the internal implementation in R.

  • DB Interface Design Optimization: Is it better to optimise for Fewer requests of smaller data size?

    - by Overflow
The prevailing wisdom in webservices/web requests in general is to design your api such that you use as few requests as possible, and that each request returns therefore as much data as is needed In database design, the accepted wisdom is to design your queries to minimise size over the network, as opposed to minimizing the number of queries. They are both remote calls, so what gives?

  • Java data structure to use with Hibernate to store unknown number of parameters?

    - by Lunikon
Following problem: I want to render a news stream of short messages based on localized texts. In various places of these messages I have to insert parameters to "customize" them. I guess you know what I mean ;) My question probably falls into the "Which is the best style to do it?" category: How would you store these parameters (they may be Strings and Numbers that need to be formatted according to Locale) in the database? I'm using Hibernate to do the ORM and I can think of the following solutions: build a combined String and save it as such (ugly and hard to maintain I think) do some kind of fancy normalization and and make every parameter a single row on the database (clean I guess, but a performance nightmare) Put the params into an Array, Map or other Java data structure and save it in binary format (probably causes a lot of overhead size-wise) I tend towards option #3 but I'm afraid that it might be to costly in terms of size in the database. What do you think?

    - by Costa
Hi I spent a day trying to make Ent Lib Logging work and log anything into database or event log, I have a web application and console application withe the same Ent Lib config, only the console is capable to log into the Event Log, I tried everything with permissions, but I don't know what exactly I am doing, which services should have what, It does not work!! • Jquery - Convert ascii chars back to HTML

    - by sdmiller
I am reading data from an html file to load into a div. The problem I am having is, the program that writes the html files is converting to <br /> SO when I execute $('#items').load('/News/list.aspx'); it displays as a string on my page instead of reading it as a page break. I have tried to read the above file into a variable to do a string replace on the <br /> but it doesn't seem to work. Any suggestions?

  • Can a Page.PrePrender event be fired before Page.Load event handler called return?

    - by flashnik
A Page.PreRender event is guaranteed to be fired after Page.Load event is fired. But is it guaranteed to be fired after Load event handler returned? A more general question is if event lifecycle of ASP.Net page guarantees that each event is fired only after previous has returned or events can be fired while previous is still executing? How does answer change if previous event fires some custom event such as DataBound? Can such event be executed in parallel with another event in page lifecycle?

  • post object to wcf rest service

    - by gleasonomicon
I'm using the WCF Rest service application project template in visual studio. I'm just learning about REST, and I was wondering how I would post a SampleItem object to the following method: [WebInvoke(UriTemplate = "", Method = "POST")] public SampleItem Create(SampleItem instance) { // TODO: Add the new instance of SampleItem to the collection throw new NotImplementedException(); } I get the general concepts of gets for the purposes of grabbing data, but I'm not sure how I would post the object in code (or just through a browser for testing) to the service.
