• Is .Net Going to Die As far as Server Apps and Desktop Apps are concerned? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: What does Windows 8 mean for the future of .NET? The Windows 8 preview doesn't mention .Net, and the demo seems to showcase what HTML, CSS and Javascript can do on Windows 8 OS. The impression I get from watching it is that HTML , Javascript is going to figure prominently in Windows 8, even for the traditional windows desktop applications. That, couple with the fact that there is no mentioning of .Net 5 and Visual Studio 2012 or 2013( MS is pretty quick to announce the next generation VS tools) yet, makes me worry that sooner or later, Microsoft will abandon the .Net platform completely. Yes, not just abandoning Silverlight, but the .Net platform in general. Which means that all the desktop apps, server apps you wrote in .Net is going to be obsolete, much like how VB6 apps are now obsolete. Is .Net going to die? Of course you won't find that all .Net apps stop running tomorrow. But will there be a day-- even when at that time Microsoft is alive and kicking-- when .Net apps are looked upon as legacy apps in the way we perceive VB6 apps? • Can I host a website on a different address from the webmail?

  I have what is to me an unusual situation. I have a client for whom I have built a website which I will be hosting, they have been using their domain name for their email addresses for a long period before I came along so moving their email account to my host would be problematic and building the website with their current host would also be problematic because their host is very restrictive. So to fix this I altered the A record in their existing control panel to point the domain name to my server. As a result I can see the pages that I have created at their domain and they can still access their existing webmail. However, it appears that they are now experiencing problems receiving email so I can only assume my solution was incorrect. What is the correct way to point their domain at my website but keep their webmail with the existing host? EDIT: 25/5/2012 - My client has finally responded to me after changing the MX record on their existing C-Panel. Email to their email address were being bounced back with the error 'no such recipient', so I set up the same email address in the new C-Panel and changed the MX record there to 'Remote mail exchanger' which has stopped the emails bouncing but has apparently lost them in cyperspace! Unfortunately I can't add a new record because this would require a fully qualified domain name and their domain name is of course pointed at our server!

• Ubuntu Lenove OCZ Agility3 - No Grub after install

  I've tried a dualboot (Win7 + Ubuntu) installation it on a Lenovo E330 with Agility3 240 Gigs... Conclusions: Ubuntu:: Ubuntu 12.04 x86_64 ( 21.06.2012 ) is not able to install grub in a bootable way. Grub will be installed and does update-grub during Installation, recognizes also the Win OS. But after a restart it boots directly to Windows.This is directly connected to the OCZ Agility3. On a good old fashion harddisk (those with the moving parts) Ubuntu is capable to install grub with no problem in a bootable manner. PinguyOS:: PinguyOS 12.04 LTS x86_64 (which is a Ubuntu based distro) is able to handle the Grub installation on OCZ Agility3. However they both use Grub 1.99... What i did:: Installed Windows. Installed Ubuntu. Installed PinguyOS. Grub Updates:: Grub updates are only through Pinguy OS possible, this means you have to edit the Ubuntu Grub entries manually after Kernelupdates on Ubuntu, in the PiguyOS sytem.. What i've already tried: Firmwareupgrade OCZ (livestick, successfull) Install Ubuntu Grub to sda Install Ubuntu Grub to sdc (Ubuntu Partion) Install Ubuntu Grub to /boot update-grub manually after install restore grub any ideas appreciated..

• Ubuntu 12.04 does not suspend with proprietary driver for Radeon 6800

  I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 x86_64 (though these issues have existed in previous releases too) and have a Radeon 6800 graphics card. I've run into issues with the open-source driver (the system would randomly hang when shutting down) so I switched to the proprietary driver (I compiled it myself using these instructions), but I am having new problems now. The main issue is that when I go into sleep mode, about 50-75% of the time, the screen goes black but the monitor does not actually shut off, and I can hear that the fans/hard drive are not suspending either. I can't get the computer to wake up (Ctrl+Alt+F1,2,3,etc. does not work), and I always end up force shutting down with the power button. I'd really appreciate help! • Letting search engines know that different links to identical pages stress different parts of the page

  When you follow a permalink to a chat message in the Stack Exchange chat, you get a view of the transcript page for the day that contains the particular message. This message is highlighted in yellow, and the page is scrolled to its position. Sometimes – admittedly rarely, but it happens – a web search will result in such a transcript link. Here's a (constructed, obviously) example: A Google search for strange behavior of the \bibliography command site:chat.stackexchange.com gives me a link to this chat message. This message is obiously unrelated to my query, but the transcript page does indeed contain my search terms – just in a totally different spot. Both the above links lead to the same content, and Google knows this, since both pages have <link rel="canonical" href="/transcript/41/2012/4/9/0-24" /> in their <head>. The only difference between the two links is Which message has the highlight css class?. Is there a way to let Google know that while all three links have the same content, they put an emphasis on a different part of the content? Note that the permalinks on the transcript page already have a #12345 hash to "point" to the relavant chat message, but Google appears to drop it.

• Flashback Data Archives: Ein gutes Gedächtnis für DBA und Entwickler

  Daten werden gespeichert und zum Teil lange aufbewahrt. Mitunter werden Daten nach ihrer ersten Speicherung geändert, vielleicht sogar mehrfach. Je nach gesetzlicher oder betrieblicher Vorgabe müssen die Veränderungen sogar nachverfolgbar sein. Damit sind zugleich Mechanismen gefordert, die sicherstellen, dass die Folge der Versionen lückenlos ist. Und implizit bedeutet das zusätzlich, dass die Versionen auch vor Löschen und Verändern geschützt sein müssen. Das Versionieren kann über die Anwendung, mit der die Daten auch erfasst werden, erfolgen, über Trigger oder über besondere Werkzeuge. Jede dieser Lösungen hat ihre eigenen Schwächen. Zusätzlich steht die Frage nach dem Schutz vor unerlaubtem Löschen oder Ändern versionierter Daten im Raum. Flashback Data Archives lösen diese Frage, denn sie bieten nicht nur einen wirksamen Mechanismus zum Versionieren von Datensätzen, sondern sie schützen diese Versionen auch vor Veränderung und löschen sie schließlich sogar automatisch nach Ablauf ihrer Aufbewahrungsfrist.Ursprünglich wurden die Archive als eigenständige Option zur Enterprise Edition der Oracle Database 11g unter dem Namen Total Recall eingeführt. Ende Juni 2012 verloren die Flashback Data Archives ihren Status als eigenständige Option. Weil die Archive aber grundsätzlich komprimiert wurden, hat Oracle sie stattdessen zu einem Feature der Advanced Compression Option der Enterprise Edition (ACO) gemacht. Seit der Version 11.2.0.4 der Datenbank ist das Komprimieren aber für die Archive nicht mehr zwangsläufig, sondern optional. Damit gibt es lizenzrechtlich erneut eine Änderung: Wer die Kompression verwendet, der muss nach wie vor ACO lizensieren. Wer die Flashback Data Archives dagegen ohne Kompression verwendet - also zum Beispiel Entwickler -, dem stehen sie ab 11.2.0.4 aufwärts im Lieferumfang aller Editionen der Datenbank zur Verfügung. Diese Änderung ist in den Handbüchern zur Lizensierung der Versionen 11.2 und 12.1 der Datenbank dokumentiert. • 1.5 TB USB Drive failed to mount

  Seagate 1.5Tb FreeAgent USB Hard Drive. Formatted FAT32. I figure it is 75% full. Used to work fine in XUBUNTU it shows up in Cairo Dock but when I click on it I get "failed to mount drive'. Nautilus does not display the icon nor does Thunar. Windows Vista will no longer recognise drive either. Back Track 5R3 also no longer fails to mount it. BUT and here is the BIG BUT my Pioneer DV-410 reads the files and plays the everything just fine. I believe this all happened after an unclean shutdown / XUbuntu 12.10 system freeze. Why can't XUBUNTU mount this drive when a crappy 13 year old DVD player can mount it. I am desperate to back up the data before just in case the drive becomes completely unreadable. Using XUBUNTU 12.10 Quantal current 3.5.0.17 Kernel (past 3 Kernels wont read it either) and all newest apt-get update / dist-upgrade are applied. I will post any other info you folks request as needed. • Oracle BPM overview and roadmap session on Monday, October 1st

  Bhagat Nainani and I, Manoj Das, will present a session on Oracle BPM overview and road map on Monday, October 1 2012, from 12:15-1:15 PM at Moscone South - 308. Since last OpenWorld, many good things have happened. Many customers have gone live with their BPM 11g deployments, some of whom were nominated for the Innovation Awards. From a product perspective, we delivered 11.1.1.6 and 11.1.1.7 is just around the corner. We will discuss some of the highlights related to both customer successes and product features. In particular, we will present some of the exciting new capabilities that we are introducing in 11.1.1.7 around business analyst driven model-to-execution, more comprehensive unified BPM suite, more flexible and manageable BPM. Another significant development is the release of Process Accelerators. We have not only released accelerators, we have ourselves deployed and are using them internally. We will talk about accelerators as well as our learnings. • Mouse doesn't work & internet connection not made in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

  Yesterday, Nov 15, 2012, I booted into my Ubuntu 12.04 LTS system. It has resided on a Crucial 128 GB SSD with about 90% free space since early summer. I also have Windows 7 loaded on another Crucial 256 GB SSD. Ubuntu has set up a dual boot system for me even though each OS has its own SSD. I have been using this setup without problems since summer. Yesterday, when the boot process finished, my Microsoft Comfort Mouse 3000 did not work and there was a message that Ubuntu was not connected to the internet. So w/o the mouse I was forced to turn the machine off manually. About 4 days ago Ubuntu worked fine and booting into Win 7 also works fine. I have a backup machine with the same style mouse on it so I swapped the mouse onto this system. Same results. But both mice work when booting into Win 7. Today I removed both SSDs and installed my Ubuntu 12.04 HD which has not been used since I moved Ubuntu to the SSD from it. Same results. Between the last time I used Ubuntu 12.04 on the SSD and when I tried to use it again I made no changes to my machine, either hardware or software. My machines specs are: AMD FX-6100, MSI 990FXA-GD65 AM3+ format with latest BIOS (Ver 19.9), Corsair Vengeance 1866 MHz memory - 16 GB (4GB X 4 sticks), MSI N580GTX video card (nVidia 306.97 drivers), Sony Bravia 32" HD TV as a monitor, Pioneer BluRay DVD-RW, DSL connection to internet thru a router (10 mps), Crucial 128 GB SSD (90% free space), Microsoft Comfort Mouse 3000 I try to maintain current BIOS and drivers for all devices. I mostly use my Ubuntu system for programming in GCC and OpenCOBOL, surfing the internet and e-mailing. No games are installed. I'm stumped! If anyone has experienced this same problem I'd appreciate knowing how you solved it. TIA, Dave

• how can I get 32-bit program to run on 64-bit Ubuntu?

  Sorry to be asking this, but I have read quite a few posts and articles a lot of places wrt the issue I am having, to no avail. I am trying to get a Second Life Viewer (Firestorm) to run, and just keep getting the '64-bit error message' it throws. I have installed every 32-lib I can find, still doesn't work. I think I am surely missing some setting somewhere, or running Firestorm from the wrong place, or something, but I have no idea what. FWIW, Firestorm loads but doesn't behave right in the 32-bit version, either. I have actually tried several linux distros, 32 and 64-bit. Mint 32-bit runs it straight off, and Mint 64-bit throws the '64-bit error'. openSUSE, any version, won't run it at all. Oh, and all the other SL viewers I have tried behave the same way. I am beginning to wonder if my set-up just doesn't like linux. Here is my system info: CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 CPU 750 @ 2.67GHz (2661 MHz) Memory: 4026 MB OS Version: Linux 3.2.0-29-generic-pae #46-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jul 27 17:25:43 UTC 2012 i686 Graphics Card Vendor: ATI Technologies Inc. • Another big year for the ADF EMG at OOW12

  Oracle Open World 2012 has only just started, but in one way it's just finished!  All the ADF EMG's OOW content is over for another year! The unique highlight this year for me was the first ever ADF EMG social night held on Saturday, where I finally had the chance to meet so many ADF community members who I've known over the internet, but never met in person.  What?  You didn't get an invite?  Oh well, better luck next year ;-) Seriously our budget was limited, so in the happy-dictatorship sort of way I had to limit RSVPs to just 40 people.  Hopefully next year we can do something bigger and better for the wider community. Following directly on from the Saturday social night the ADF EMG ran a full day of sessions at the user group Sunday.  I wont go over the content again, but to say thank you very much to all our presenters and helpers, including Gert Poel, Pitier Gillis, Aino Andriessen, Simon Haslam, Ken Mizuta, Lucas Jellema and the FMW roadshow team, Ronald van Luttikhuizen, Guido Schmutz, Luc Bors, Aino Andriessen and Lonneke Dikmans. Also special thanks must go to Doug Cockroft and Bambi Price for their time and effort in organizing the ADF EMG room behind the scenes via the APOUC. To be blunt Doug and Bambi really do deserve serious thanks because they had to wear a lot of Oracle politics behind the scenes to get the rooms organized (oh, and deal with me fretting too! ;-). Finally thanks to all the members and OOW delegates for turning up and supporting the group on the day.  In the end the ADF EMG exists for you, and I hope you found it worthwhile. • print jobs are held until the VirtualBox guest OS is reboot

  Here is the setup: VirtualBox 4.1.20 (which the Help window describes as 4.1.12_Ubuntu) Extension Pack 4.1.20 (for USB support) Windows 7 Home Premium as a guest operating system on VirtualBox Ubuntu 12.04 with dist-upgrade's to September 2012 as the host operating system. Fuji Xerox DocuPrint P205b, which I believe is a GDI printer, connected via USB. The problem is that often print jobs will sit in the print queue and nothing comes out of the printer. The printer status for the first item in the queue will be Printing even though nothing happens. Then upon rebooting Windows, the print jobs get printed, seemingly simultaneous to the rebooting process; that is as Windows reloads. One way to avoid this problem is to reboot Windows with the printer cable attached, and then submit the print jobs. The print jobs get printed in a timely manner. Perhaps VirtualBox has a problem with USB being plug-n-play and hot pluggable. It's not convenient to have the printer plugged in when Windows boots because: One, this is a laptop, and Two, I may be boot Windows for a purpose other than printing and not anticipate needing to print. Are there any recommendable fixes for this problem?

• Should we choose Java over C# or we should consider using Mono?

  We are a small team of independent developers with an average experience of 7 years in C#/.NET platform. We almost work on small to average web application projects that allows us to choose our favorite platform. I believe that our current platform (C#/.NET) allows us to be more productive than if we were working in Java but what makes me think about choosing Java over C# is the costs and the community (of the open source). Our projects allow us even work with various frameworks as well as various platforms. For example we can even use Nancy. So we are able to decrease the costs by using Mono which can be deployed on Linux servers. But I'm looking for a complete ecosystem (IDE/Platform/Production Environment) that decreases our costs and makes us feel completely supported by the community. As an example of issues I've experienced with MonoDevelop, I can refer to the poor support of the Razor syntax on MonoDevelop. As another example, We are using "VS 2012 Express for Web" as our IDE to decrease the costs but as you know it doesn't support plugins and I have serious problems with XML comments (I missed GhostDoc). We strongly believe in strongly-typed programming languages so please don't offer the other languages and platforms such as Ruby, PHP, etc. Now I want to choose between: Keep going on C#, buy some products and be hopeful about openness of .NET ecosystem and its open source community. Changing the platform and start using the Java open source ecosystem

• Welcome to the newly merged JCP EC!

  As part of the JCP.Next effort, the second JSR as part of the JCP program reforms, JSR 355, Executive Committee (EC) Merge, will take effect on Tuesday as JCP 2.9. The first in the effort was JSR 348, which took effect as JCP 2.8 in October 2011. EC members guide the evolution of the Java technologies by approving and voting on all technology proposals (Java Specification Requests, or JSRs). They are also responsible for defining the JCP's rules of governance and the legal agreement between members and the organization. They provide guidance to the Program Management Office (PMO) and they represent the interests of the JCP to the broader community. Starting on Tuesday, 13 November, JCP 2.9 is in effect, and the EC is merged from two ECs -- one representing Java SE/EE and one representing Java ME -- to one merged EC. IBM and Oracle each gave up one of their two seats (one per EC) and the terms expired for four members who did not run for re-election: AT&T, Deutsch Telekom, Siemens and Vodafone. All four remain JCP members. In addition, the seat occupied by RIM was forfeited due to lack of participation in October 2012. The JCP values the organizations and representatives for their contribution to the JCP EC, and looks forward to their continued participation in the JCP Program. The complete listing of the EC, 24 members total at the moment, is now available. We asked the two newcomers to the EC, Cinterion and CloudBees, and the re-elected London Java Community, to comment on their plans for their term in the EC. Read about their plans in the article published on JCP.org, "JCP 2.9 with a Merged EC Takes Effect 13 November".
