• Server freeze - how to debug

  I am running a Debian virtual server with Apache, PHP, MySQL. There is just 1 website with very low traffic running but the server very often (almost everyday) freezes and does not respond. When this happens the server is unreachable from web browser or by SSH and I have to go to administration of my provider and perform server hard reset after this the server seems to work fine. • Is there a version of Debian-Lenny that is legal for export from the US?

  I wanted to bundle my application in a Debian-Lenny Virtual Machine so others could download it and run it without having to configure anything. However, I don't want to have to worry about US legal issues. Many of the packages in a default Debian installation include encryption algorithms. Are all default versions export-safe?    If not, is there an export-safe version?       If not, is there an easy way to make one?

  Hello - I am trying to write a simple rewrite rule using the rewriteengine in apache. I want to redirect all traffic destined to a website unless the traffic originates from a specific IP address and the URI contains two specific strings. • Ubuntu displaying GDM but no login

  Ubuntu (Wubi, Lucid Lynx) boots and shows the login screen itself with the background and plays the boot sound but a list of users is never displayed. A mouse is on screen and I can move it but, alas, it does nothing. Dropping to a virtual term with CTRL+Alt+F# drops me to a cursor but I can't actually input anything. I can't boot into single-user with GRUB since it's Wubi and it never specifies a boot kernel directly in GRUB's initial menu.lst (only in files that it then reads from). Other details that may be helpful: Single monitor Same video card that's been working for months No new hardware Edit: I ssh'd in since it evidently booted up the sshd which is handy. dpkg-reconfigure gdm didn't do anything helpful. I do, however, get a "no seat-id found" when manually running it.

  A colleague of mine gave me the SQL Server 2008 Standard ISO image and I used that while building a Virtual Machine. Now, when I installed SQL Server with that above mentioned ISO, I did not give it a key and I chose Enterprise Evaluation. So, the instance has now been activated with 180-day expiration. I do have a valid MSDN Subscriber login but when I login and search for SQL Server 2008 it comes up with the download but says No Product Key is required. How do I now enter the product key?

• Nginx no static files after update

  First, i must say that i am not expert in server administration, my site was setup by hosting admins (that i cannot contact anymore). Few days ago, i updated Nginx to latest version (admin told me that it is safe to do). But after that, my site serves only html content, no CSS, images, JS. If i try to open some image i get message "Wellcome to Nginx" (same thin if i try to open static.mysitedomain.com). More details: Site has static. subdomain, but static files are in same directory as they used to be before setting up static files. I was googling for some solutions, i tried to change something in /etc/nginx/, but no luck. I feel that this is some minor configuration problem, any ideas? • SCCM deploy from VMware XP image

  We recently set up the latest version of SCCM and I managed to capture a .wim image from a virtual machine (build and capture task sequence). I want to use this .wim file to deploy winXP to different hardware, and therefor need to add device drivers to the task sequence. I created a driver package per laptop type, and deployed for the first time. However, I am getting a BSOD (0x00007B) which leads me to believe theres a problem with the storage drivers. After adjusting the task sequence to try and point to the mass storage drivers (which are applied at F6, I suppose) I do not get a list of compatible drivers (the list is empty). I looked around, and found some issues regarding hdc class drivers that are not recognized as mass storage drivers. The workaround suggested changing the INF file to make the driver a SCSIAdapter class driver, and importing these again, but to no avail. The list remains empty. Any help is much appreciated

• Easily tell if focused on VirtualBox window?

  Is there a way to make it very obvious that my VirtualBox window isn't in focus? The problem I'm having is switching between workspaces on Ubuntu or OS X and then trying to type in my Windows virtual machine, only to find that it's not in focus. The Windows window looks like it's in focus (based on the title bar), but I'm actually typing in Firefox on the host machine, for example. It's even worse because the Windows text insertion cursor is blinking to show focus. Ideally, I'd like the VM's display to get unsaturated (e.g. a "partial" grayscale) when not in focus, just to prevent this keyboard-focus problem. Other options would be fine too, as long as I don't have to second guess where my focus is. I'm not using the seamless mode -- the display is all within a window.

• How much memory should my rails stack be consuming?

  I am running my own webserver on a 384MB VPS from Slicehost to serve two Ruby on Rails applications on separate Virtual Hosts. I am running Phusion Passenger with Apache2. • How to get Hyper-V to recognize that a VM isn't stopping, it's stopped.

  I have a Hyper-V virtual machine that has some problems. First, its settings are apparently corrupt: The WMI object contained an invalid value in property BIOSNumLock. The WMI object contained an invalid value in property AutomaticStartupAction. Second, I saw something that implied that I could toggle the NumLock checkbox on the BIOS property page to fix the first problem, but the checkbox didn't show up. So I connected to the VM and shut it down. Now (many hours later) Hyper-V claims that the VM is "Stopping". However, when I follow the interweb's directions on forcing a VM offline (i.e. find vmwp and kill it), I can't find vmwp. The VM's WMI object has a PID that doesn't exist, and none of the vmwp processes have this machine's GUID. So, how do I trick Hyper-V into seeing that the machine is offline (or letting me delete it)?

  I have a virtualbox image that I created using libvirt from Ubuntu 10.04. It assigns a fixed IP address. I can start it up on my Windows 7 VirtualBox, but I cannot get networking to work. My colleague loaded the same image onto his Windows 7 and networking worked as a bridged connection. Therefore, I know that the image is good, it must be something about my Windows 7 installation. • What are the mandatory Linux kernel modules to run inside of ESXi

  I'm used to rolling my own kernels for servers, as it nicely minimizes the number of exploits (and the resulting patches) to take care of. In a traditional (bare metal) world, the whole process is about knowing what you have (hardware), and what you need (Ethernet, IPv4, iptables, etc.) In a virtualized environment, some things stay the same (still need Ethernet and IPv4), some things go away (power management), and then there are some new needs (vxnet3, or vmware-tools, even though that's compiled outside of the kernel). So my question mostly concerns itself with the last two categories: what can I remove completely, and what new stuff do I want? For example, what IO scheduler do I want, if all my disk operations are going through another filesystem/scheduler/cache to get to the virtual disk? Do I need hyper-threading enabled, or is the VM going to show them to me anyway as a CPU anyway? Do I need Large Receive Offload turned on, or is that something that the hypervisor's network drivers are going to do for me?

• Create a folder shortcut/redirection in Vista

  Given a plain old directory of files in Windows Vista, say "C:\OldFolder\", is it possible to move the contents of that directory to a new location, perhaps "F:\NewFolder\" and keep a shortcut-like 'virtual' folder at C:\OldFolder that will always redirect access to the updated location. Shortcuts work for users accessing through the GUI to some extent, but all application links to the old location won't work anymore even with a shortcut. For example, If MS Word tried to access C:\OldFolder\document.doc I would want Windows to simply rewrite it's request to F:\NewFolder\document.doc... I guess I'm basically looking for Apache's Mod_Rewrite for Windows Vista... any suggestions?

• Virtualhost setup, same IP address, different DirectoryIndex's

  I am trying to set up 2 virtual host entries in apache but I'm not sure how to accomplish what I want to do. I have two domain names, both pointing to the same IP Address. I need the DirectoryIndex to be different, which is pretty much the only difference in the entries. The only real difference is I need the second domain to point to a different DirectoryIndex. If there is a better way to accomplish this, your help would be appreciated.

  One of my customers has requested that their web server is encrypted to prevent offline attacks to highly sensitive data contained in a mysql database and also /var/log. I have full root access to the dedicated server at a popular host. I am considering 3 options - FDE - This would be ideal, but with only remote access (no console) I imagine this would be very complex. Xen - installing XEN and moving their server within a XEN virtual machine and encrypting the VM - which seems easier to do remotely. Parition - encrypt the non-static partitions where the sensitive data resides e.g. /var /home etc. What would be the simplist approach that satisfies the requirements?

• How do you passthrough native SATA drives to a guest on ESXi?

  I have ESXi 4.0 running on an Intel DX58S0 Mothboardboard with an Intel Core i7 930 processor. VT-d is also enabled. I have three drives in the system, drive 0 is used for ESXi. Drive 1 and 2 contain data from an older machine and show up under the "Storage Adapters" section in configuration. I would like to allow a guest machine to access the data on these drives (as nativly as possible). I have enabled passthrough of the motherboard's built in SATA controller (Intel/Marvell 88SE6121 ). This controller shows up in my guest OS, but the guest shows no drives aside from the normal virtual drive. I have tried a Linux guest and Windows7. I have also configured the host machine to try IDE/RAID/ACHI modes for the SATA controller. Any ideas how I can configure one of my guests to get at the raw data on these drives?

• Configuring port forwarding on Fortigate 50B

  I can't for the life of me get port forwarding to work on my Fortigate 50B. I followed the setup tips described on this other SF thread with no success. The only specific difference I can find is we are using load balancing through 2 different internet uplinks. Is there any caveat specific to this scenario that I might be missing? If you need any specific additional information please ask because I think I have checked everything: Virtual IP mapping on external interface wan1 ACCEPT all from any on wan1 to the corresponding server on internal No seeming offending firewall rules (any specific pitfalls that I might want to check for?)

• Why my AD domain doesn't work on my laptop

  I have installed Windows Server 2008 R2 on a virtual machine with a bridged network card and installed Active Directory. I configured it and when I try to connect my laptop to the domain name, in this case, creationsmicroweb.ca (doesn't exist, don't try, for local only), I can't get connected. My laptop just doesn't see it. I don't know why! • Why do all my sites randomly stop in iis?

  I have a GoDaddy Account with a virtual hosting environment. For some reason every few weeks, all of our sites (both websites and FTP sites) are stopped. I restart them and they start normally, but I would like to prevent this from happening in the future. It is an iis thing. When you open up iis you can see that each of the sites has been stopped in iis. Also, I have tried looking at the event viewer and I don't see anything, but I am not sure what I am looking for.

  I have Windows Server 2003 running in a virtual machine, running some software that is trying to update a database within transactions on my Windows 7 machine (the host for the VM). On my host I have edited the settings for Local DTC by selecting the following Client and Administration Allow Remote clients Allow Remote administration Transaction manager communication Allow inbound Allow outbound No authentication required However when I try to run the software I receive this error: MSDTC on server 'x' is unavailable. Whilst searching for fixes most just suggest making sure the service is running which I have. Cheers!

  I am getting a lot of the following types of error in my secure log on a CentOS 5.4 server: crond[10445]: pam_loginuid(crond:session): set_loginuid failed opening loginuid sshd[10473]: pam_loginuid(sshd:session): set_loginuid failed opening loginuid I've seen discussion of this being caused when using a non-standard kernel without the correct CONFIG_AUDIT and CONFIG_AUDITSYSCALL options set. Where this is the case, it is advised to comment out some lines in the pam.d config files. I am running a Virtual Private Server where I need to use the kernel provided by the supplier. Is there a way to find out what options they used to configure the kernel? I want to verify if the above is the cause. If this turns out not to be the cause, what are the risk of disabling pam_loginuid for crond and sshd?

I want to tweak this to allow anyone to request a certain URL: http://example.com/public/file.html How do I change this to allow /public/file.html requests to get through from anyone? Note: /public/file.html doesn't actually exist as a file on the server. I redirect all incoming requests through a single index file using mod_rewrite.
