• IIS7 - Web Deployment Tool - SetParam/SetParamFile to set http and https bindings + Cert

  Hi, we're currently using the MS Web Deployment Tool to sync a live website and some WebServices from a staging box to two live servers. The staging box hosts the site on any IP on port 17000, whereas the two live servers are load-balanced and have a different IP for each of them. At present, I generate two separate packages for deployment - one for each machine - using the sync operation and specifying a DestinationBinding parameter as follows: msdeploy -verb:sync -source:WebServer,computerName=localhost -dest:package="machinename.zip" -setParam:type="DestinationBinding",scope="SiteName",value="ip_address:port:". (Split across multiple lines to make it easier to read!) I run this twice, with a different target filename and ip address for each of the two machines. When it comes to deployment, I simply do a sync from each package to its respective live site. I know, I know - I should be able to do it by generating one parameterised package and then perhaps using the SetParamFile switch for each of the two Servers - believe me I'd like to, but the documentation on doing this is frankly non-existent. Now I need to configure and deploy both HTTP and HTTPS binding for this site; including also the ssl cert that is to be used. I've added an SSL binding for the site on the staging box - which uses a development cert (which will need to be replaced - or should the staging box be using the live cert?), and now the above command line has the effect of replacing the target IP on both http and https entries. It appears that I cannot specify multiple bindings plus the cert information in the DestinationBinding value in the -setParam above, so anyone know how would I go about doing this? Any help greatly appreciated.

• Spotlight actually searching every file on "This Mac"

  I know of 2 ways to search for any file in your machine using Finder (some say it's Spotlight) and no Terminal. To prevent answers / comments about Terminal, I consider it either for scripting something or as last resource. It's not practical for lots of usages. For instance, if you want to find something to attach to a mail, or embed in iTunes or any other app, you can just drag n' drop one or many of them. Definitely not practical to do under Terminal. There are many cases of use for any, but the focus here is Graphical User Interface. Well, the 2 ways basically are: Press Cmd + Opt + Spacebar and type in your search. Press the + button, select "System files" and "are included". This is so far my preferred way, but I'm not sure it will go through every file. Open Finder, press Cmd + Shift + G and/or select just one folder. Type in your search and select the folder rather than "This Mac". This will bring files not shown in "This Mac" if you select a folder outside of the default scope. Thing is, none of those is really convenient or have the nice presentation from regular Spotlight, which you get from Cmd + Spacebar and just typing. And, as far as I've heard, the default behavior on Spotlight in Tiger was actually being able to find files anywhere. So, is there any way to make the process significantly simpler? Maybe some tweak, configuration or really good Spotlight alternative? I'd rather keep it simple and tweak Spotlight.

• How to monitor changes in the frequency of network latency spikes over time?

  I'm currently trying to troubleshoot an issue with my network in which I get latency spikes up to 200 seconds (normally around 50 secs) in an apparently random way at apparently random moments of the day. While trying to find what part of my messy network needs to be blamed (outside of the scope of this question - discussed a bit on chat), I realized I have no reliable way to confirm that a change actually improved anything. So far, the main way in which i notice this is that irssi shows [Lag: 15 (??)] in the statusbar, increasing every 5 seconds, and all other connections seem to be affected too. Since this depends on my observations, it's not a very reliable method to know how often it really happens. Note that just sending ICMP pings is probably not enough, but that's just my guess. It might be a "bufferbloat" issue, it might be packet loss, it might only apply to persistent connections. I suspect this because a few months ago, when the issue started, I had a "ping" command running in background and it didn't show anything weird at all during the latency spikes. This seems to have changed now (pings don't go through), but still, I'd prefer something more robust.

  We have working installation of OpenLDAP version 2.4 which is using shadowAccount attributes. I want to enable ppolicy overlays. I have gone through the steps provided at OpenLDAP and ppolicy howto. I have made the changes to slapd.conf and imported the password policy. On restart OpenLDAP is working fine and I can see the password policy when I do a ldapsearch.   I've had a /29 provisioned on a network port for a server and am trying to at least configure the machine so I can ssh into it. It's Centos 6.2 x64 with the Basic Server install. Currently not able to ping gateway or any address for that matter. Why it's happening, but still I can not resolve this issue. Any ideas on what is happening here?

• Fresh Proxmox VE 2.1 installation with defaults can't be reached or pinged

  I am using the lastest Proxmox VE 2.1. My server has two NICS with a uplink only connected into eth0. My Server is a co-located server utilizing public IPv4 IPs. It is not behind a firewall or any system which monitors traffic. Via IPKVM I did a fresh install of Proxmox, I put in the correct IP, Mask, Gateway, and DNS information. The install went perfectly fine with no errors. Upon completion and rebooting the system: I am unable to reach the web GUI via the browser, it just times out. I am unable to ping the server. I am unable to ping outside to the Internet from within the server. Tried pinging out to 4.2.2.2 and yahoo.com I tried rebooting the server and restarting the network service. IFCONFIG shows my IP information under vmbro0 which also has the same MAC address as the eth0 device. eth0 only displays a IPv6 Scope:Link address, which I did not setup myself. This is my first time installing proxmox, but after searching for a few hours it doesn't seem like anyone else is having the same issue as me from a fresh install with just the defaults. So far the only thing I did was install it. Also, I know the network cable is good and the IP is good because I was running a Xen XCP server with the same network settings prior to wiping it to install proxmox.   I am using Windows Firewall in conjunction with a third-party tool to get notified about new outbound connection attempts (Windows Firewall Notifier or Windows Firewall Control). The way these tools do it is by setting the firewall to deny by default, and to add an auditing policy to log blocked connections into the Security event log. Then they watch the log, and display notification about newly added entries. netsh advfirewall set allprofiles firewallpolicy blockinbound,blockoutbound auditpol /set /subcategory:{0CCE9226-69AE-11D9-BED3-505054503030} /failure:enable With this configuration in place, I now need to craft outbound allow rules for applications and system services. Here is the rule for CryptSvc, the service frequently used for certificate validation and revocation checking: netsh advfirewall firewall add rule name="Windows Cryptographic Services" action=allow enable=yes profile=any program="%SystemRoot%\system32\svchost.exe" service="CryptSvc" dir=out protocol=tcp remoteport=80,443 The problem is, this rule does not work. Unless I change the scope to "all programs and services" (which is really unhealthy), connection denied events like the following will keep appearing in the security log: Event 5157, Microsoft Windows security auditing. The Windows Filtering Platform has blocked a connection. • windows clients cannot get dns resolution until you open and close ipv4 properties page

  This strange problem has started recently. Some windows clients cannot seem to get dns resolution to the internet after boot, and sometimes again at some point in the day. Internal hosts are also slow to resolve. trying to ping an interal host by name will take a long time for the hostname to resolve to ip address and trying to ping a website by name will fail to resolve. If you go into the tcp/ip v4 properties and view but not change anything, ok/close out of that then the client starts working fine, hostnames will resolve quickly. I have seen this happen on both Vista and W7 clients. ipconfig /all at a client experiencing this problem shows everything in order. proper ip addr, gateway, dns server, dns suffix ect.. ipconfig /dnsflush will not fix them, neither will /release and /renew the clients get their ip address, mask and dns server info from either one of 2 OES dhcp servers that assign addresses in different scopes in the same subnet. the internal dns server is a different OES dns server the default gateway is not assigned by the OES server but is statically put in at the client (only for those who need to get to the Internet for their job) flat network topology What can I do to get to the bottom of this? It only happens to a few of the client machines and typically the same ones. It started happening when we made a change to one of the DHCP scopes in iManager. Strangly this problem only happens to clients that get an IP address from the scope that we didn't make any changes to.

• FreeBSD 8.1 unstable network connection

  I have three FreeBSD 8.1 running on three different hardware and therefore consist of different network adapter as well (bce, bge and igb). I found that the network connection is kind of unstable which I have tried to scp some 10MB file and found that I cannot always get the files completed successfully. I have further checked with my network admin and he claim that the problem is being caused by the network driver which cannot support the load whereby he tried to ping using huge packet size (around 15k) and my server will drop packet consistently at a regular interval. I found that this statement may not be valid since the three server is using three different network drive and it would be quite impossible that the same problem is being caused by three different network adapter and thus different network driver.   I am trying to run the following code snippet as part of a tool to gather and log some pertinent system diagnostics. The purpose of this snippet is to gather the result of running the command: vssadmin list writers The snippet is as follows: ' Set WshShell = CreateObject("WScript.Shell") ' WScript.Echo sCurPath & "\vsswritercheck.bat" ' Set WshShellExec = WshShell.Exec("elevate.cmd cmd.exe /c " & sCurPath & "\vsswritercheck.bat") Set oShell = CreateObject("Shell.Application") oShell.ShellExecute "cmd.exe", sCurPath & "\vsswritercheck.bat", , "runas", 1 vsswriter = VSSWriterCheck Select Case oShell.Status Case WshFinished strOutput = oShell.StdOut.ReadAll Case WshFailed strOutput = oShell.StdErr.ReadAll End Select WScript.Echo strOutPut vsswriter = strOutPut With the first code snippet (commented out) I can run the command and capture stdout from the batch file. In the second code snipped, I cannot capture stdout. I need to be able to run the batch script with Elevated permissions, so I am looking for a compromise between the functionality of the two. I cannot run the entire calling script in elevated mode due to restrictions from other pieces of functionality. I am looking for any ideas on how to add this output to my log as I am running out of options that are within the scope of basic scripts.
