• Can't Log in to Lubuntu 12.04 X Server

  As of rebooting yesterday I can't login as myself to the X server part of 64-bit Lubuntu 12.04. Same problem as Can not get passed the login screen but that solution didn't work for me. Troubleshooting steps I already took: I can log in as guest (with whatever window manager) to the graphic (X) view of Lubuntu. log in as myself into a virtual terminal. (In fact I'm writing this from w3m for that reason.) So I know my password is correct and that most aspects of the system are working. One of the top google results for "can't log into lubuntu" mentioned a disk-full problem on netbooks; I don't have that problem. • Flash intro or embedded video?

  So a client of mine wants his homepage to start off something like this: http://www.roche-bobois.com/#/en-CA/home (It's basically a Flash intro that starts with a vector drawing of a furniture showroom that eventually transitions into the image of the actual showroom). Given that some of his users will be using an iPad to view his site, what are some of the alternatives that other developers here use? I'm thinking: Option 1: With PHP, detect if the user is using an iPad/iPhone by checking their user agent string. If they are using a mobile device, then forward to m.abccompany.com (mobile version of the site). Option 2: Convert the Flash video to MP4 or AVI and then embed that, which would allow all users to view his site. Any suggestions if either of these approaches are a good idea?

• WiFi not working on Dell Inspiron 1564

  hope you can offer some help! I'm new to Ubuntu (and Linux for that matter), but I managed to install Ubuntu 12.04 yesterday on an old Dell Inspiron 1564 Laptop. Everything works fine, with the exception of the wireless connection. Using my wired ethernet, I was able to look up several solutions which seemed as if they would work, but I've had no luck. Currently, wireless does show as enabled, but all wireless networks are disconnected, in fact, none of the networks are even listed (and I can see them on other devices in the home). • A design pattern for data binding an object (with subclasses) to asp.net user control

  I have an abstract class called Address and I am deriving three classes ; HomeAddress, Work Address, NextOfKin address. My idea is to bind this to a usercontrol and based on the type of Address it should bind properly to the ASP.NET user control. My idea is the user control doesn't know which address it is going to present and based on the type it will parse accordingly. How can I design such a setup, based on the fact that, the user control can take any type of address and bind accordingly. I know of one method like :- Declare class objects for all the three types (Home,Work,NextOfKin). Declare an enum to hold these types and based on the type of this enum passed to user control, instantiate the appropriate object based on setter injection. As a part of my generic design, I just created a class structure like this :- I know I am missing a lot of pieces in design. Can anybody give me an idea of how to approach this in proper way.

• Python script as a service on Ubuntu 11.10

  I am facing the following problem. I want to run a python script as a service on Ubuntu 11.10 system (already mentioned in the following link: Python service using Upstart on Ubuntu) I followed the steps mentioned in the above mentioned link, but i got the following error message in syslog: init: script main process (21826) terminated with status 1 Jun 8 16:59:55 bilbo kernel: [263012.984531] init: script main process ended, respawning Jun 8 16:59:55 bilbo kernel: [263013.044099] init: script main process (21827) terminated with status 1 The above two lines are getting repeated all the time. • Gnome Keyring keeps asking for a password that doesn't exist

  When ever I long into Ubuntu, I'm immediately presented with a dialogue that asks me to enter the password that will unlock Gnome Keyring, however I was never prompted to set this in the first place, and none of the passwords I've tried are effective. How can I disable these popups and just have Gnome Keyring unlocked when I log in in the same way that encrypted home directories are automatically mounted upon log in. FWIW, I'm set to auto log in, which may or may not be useful information. Btw, I've seen this question, and the accepted answer didn't work. I'd rather not uninstall Keyring Update 1: I've disabled automatic login but it still appears.

• No contact list in MSN

  Since today I can't see my contact list en empathy IM, using the MSN protocol. I've tried uninstalling, reinstalling, erasing all config files from my computer (using ubuntu tweak and erasing the config files from my /home folder), but nothing solve the problem Time ago people have the same problem, they're solved it changing a line in a script, but that bug was solved in latest versions of empathy. I've tried to change that script, using other lines. /usr/lib/pymodules/python2.6/papyon/service/description/SingleSignOn/RequestMultipleSecurityTokens.py I've changed the line CONTACTS = ("contacts.msn.com", "MBI") by the older one: CONTACTS = ("contacts.msn.com","?fs=1&id=24000&kv=7&rn=93S9SWWw&tw=0&ver=2.1.6000.1") But this no fix the bug In advanced options I have this (in empathy account options): Server: messenger.hotmail.com Port: 1863 How can I solve this? • How do I point a new domain to start on a page that's not index.html on separate hosting?

  I'm using a service (CMS/Host) called SquareSpace to host my site, and today I'm registering the domain for it. Basically, how do I make it so when somebody types www.tedxoxford.com it points at http://www.tedxoxford.com/landing (currently http://tedxoxford.squarespace.com/landing) instead of the default index? Is this possible? Squarespace is quite a restricted CMS and means that your logos etc all point to the index so I don't want people ending up on my landing/splash page every time they want the home page, only on the first time they type in the URL. A dirty hack would be to check the refferer and redirect anyone hitting the index to the landing page, but that's a lot of loading overhead I'd rather avoid...

      QUICKLINK: Note 153788.1 ORA-600/ORA-7445 Lookup tool Note 1082674.1 : A Video To Demonstrate The Usage Of The ORA-600/ORA-7445 Lookup Tool [Video]   Have you observed an ORA-07445 error reported in your alert log? While the ORA-600 error is "captured" as a handled exception in the Oracle source code, the ORA-7445 is an unhandled exception error due to an OS exception which should result in the creation of a core file.  An ORA-7445 is a generic error, and can occur from anywhere in the Oracle code. The precise location of the error is identified by the core file and/or trace file it produces.  Looking for the best way to diagnose? Whenever an ORA-7445 error is raised a core file is generated.  There may be a trace file generated with the error as well.   Prior to 11g, the core files are located in the CORE_DUMP_DEST directory.   Starting with 11g, there is a new advanced fault diagnosability infrastructure to manage trace data.  Diagnostic files are written into a root directory for all diagnostic data called the ADR home.   Core files at 11g will go to the ADR HOME/cdump directory.   For more information on the Oracle 11g Diagnosability feature see Note 453125.1 11g Diagnosability Frequently Asked Questions Note 443529.1 11g Quick Steps to Package and Send Critical Error Diagnostic Information to Support[Video]   NOTE:  While the core file is captured in the Diagnosability infrastructure, the file may not be included with a diagnostic package.1.  Check the Alert LogThe alert log may indicate additional errors or other internal errors at the time of the problem.   In some cases, the ORA-7445 error will occur along with ORA-600, ORA-3113, ORA-4030 errors.  The ORA-7445 error can be side effects of the other problems and you should review the first error and associated core file or trace file and work down the list of errors.   Note 1020463.6 DIAGNOSING ORA-3113 ERRORS Note 1812.1 TECH:  Getting a Stack Trace from a CORE file Note 414966.1 RDA Documentation Index   If the ORA-7445 errors are not associated with other error conditions, ensure the trace data is not truncated. • Ubuntu One Sync for multiple folders, not just the Ubuntu One folder.

  Hello, I may have misunderstood Ubuntu One as a service, but this is how I had pictured it. At home, I tagged a few folders with the "Sync to Ubuntu One" tick and it started uploading. Now back at work, on Win7, I installed Ubuntu One and thought I was going to be able to tick which of the backed-up folders I could download/sync to this machine. From what I gather after a little research is that whatever I would like to synchronize would need to be in the Ubuntu One folder? There is no way to do this outside of that? • Importing Radio Tray radio stations into Rhythmbox

  Radio Tray icon applet is pretty neat and comes with a variety of predefined radio stations ordered by categories. To those I also added some additional local (Israeli) radio stations and ended up with few dozens. In preparation for the coming Precise and the need to have one player for all I would like to automatically migrate this list to the Rhythmbox. (P.S. I wish Rhythmbox will also merge the capabilities of cloud players like Nuvola Player). Anyway, the only thing I figured out is that the radio stations of Radio Tray are being kept in an XML file at @HOME/.local/share/radiotray/bookmarks.xml.

  The ssd did not come along with the laptop, so i bought one myself and physically installed it. I've booted into Ubuntu from a USB drive and my goal is to install / and /home in the SSD. (because most of the actual media exists on the HDD) The only problem is i'm unable to detect the SSD while configuring the partitions. I know the SSD is not the problem because it recognizes in a different laptop. I've followed the instructions shown in https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFI but that still doesn't help in identifying the SSD partition. Any help would be appreciated. (p.s: I'm wondering if i have to prepare the SSD through windows or something like that)

• Create Advanced Panoramas with Microsoft Image Composite Editor

  Do you enjoy making panoramas with your pictures, but want more features than tools like Live Photo Gallery offer?  Here’s how you can create amazing panoramas for free with the Microsoft Image Composite Editor. Yesterday we took a look at creating panoramic photos in Windows Live Photo Gallery. Today we take a look at a free tool from Microsoft that will give you more advanced features to create your own masterpiece. Getting Started Download Microsoft Image Composite Editor from Microsoft Research (link below), and install as normal.  Note that there are separate version for 32 & 64-bit editions of Windows, so make sure to download the correct one for your computer. Once it’s installed, you can proceed to create awesome panoramas and extremely large image combinations with it.  Microsoft Image Composite Editor integrates with Live Photo Gallery, so you can create more advanced panoramic pictures directly.  Select the pictures you want to combine, click Extras in the menu bar, and select Create Image Composite. You can also create a photo stitch directly from Explorer.  Select the pictures you want to combine, right-click, and select Stitch Images… Or, simply launch the Image Composite Editor itself and drag your pictures into its editor.  Either way you start a image composition, the program will automatically analyze and combine your images.  This application is optimized for multiple cores, and we found it much faster than other panorama tools such as Live Photo Gallery. Within seconds, you’ll see your panorama in the top preview pane. From the bottom of the window, you can choose a different camera motion which will change how the program stitches the pictures together.  You can also quickly crop the picture to the size you want, or use Automatic Crop to have the program select the maximum area with a continuous picture.   Here’s how our panorama looked when we switched the Camera Motion to Planar Motion 2. But, the real tweaking comes in when you adjust the panorama’s projection and orientation.  Click the box button at the top to change these settings. The panorama is now overlaid with a grid, and you can drag the corners and edges of the panorama to change its shape. Or, from the Projection button at the top, you can choose different projection modes. Here we’ve chosen Cylinder (Vertical), which entirely removed the warp on the walls in the image.  You can pan around the image, and get the part you find most important in the center.  Click the Apply button on the top when you’re finished making changes, or click Revert if you want to switch to the default view settings. Once you’ve finished your masterpiece, you can export it easily to common photo formats from the Export panel on the bottom.  You can choose to scale the image or set it to a maximum width and height as well.  Click Export to disk to save the photo to your computer, or select Publish to Photosynth to post your panorama online. Alternately, from the File menu you can choose to save the panorama as .spj file.  This preserves all of your settings in the Image Composite Editor so you can edit it more in the future if you wish.   Conclusion Whether you’re trying to capture the inside of a building or a tall tree, the extra tools in Microsoft Image Composite Editor let you make nicer panoramas than you ever thought possible.  We found the final results surprisingly accurate to the real buildings and objects, especially after tweaking the projection modes.  This tool can be both fun and useful, so give it a try and let us know what you’ve found it useful for. • I'm building a theme for tumblr and the {HasPages} doesn't seem to work properly.

  I've put the HTML draft of the theme so far, with minor CSS edits. Currently I have all the block posts and everything else that's essential to a tumblr theme but I can't seem to get the {HasPages} block to work properly. I've tested it on a different tumblr, also. There are pages created and I already have provided some basic CSS for it just in case. But there isn't anything showing up. Has anyone has this problem and if so, is there a solution I'm missing?
