• java: relationship of the Runnable and Thread interfaces

  I realize that the method run() must be declared because its declared in the Runnable interface. But my question comes when this class runs how is the Thread object allowed if there is no import call to a particular package? how does runnable know anything about Thread or its methods? does the Runnable interface extend the Thread class? • How do I keep a scanner from throwing exceptions when the wrong type is entered? (java)

  When you use variables (is that the correct word?) in python regular expressions like this: "blah (?P\w+)" ("value" would be the variable), how could you make the variable's value be the text after "blah " to the end of the line or to a certain character not paying any attention to the actual content of the variable.   I am using python-monetdb 11.16.0.7. I created my database farm and database according to instructions given below (source: http://www.monetdb.org/Documentation/monetdbd) % monetdbd start /home/my-dbfarm % monetdb create my-first-db Then I tried to connect to the database using the below mentioned command in python(https://pypi.python.org/pypi/python-monetdb/). • Is it possible to install IDLE on Python 2.5 and Ubuntu

  Ubuntu Software Center offers versions of IDLE numbered 2.6 and upwards. If I have to use Python 2.5 (because of Google App Engine compatibility), will it be possible to still use IDLE? I am of course assuming that the there is some necessity for the IDLE version number to be the same as the Python version number. Presently, my invocations of IDLE fail because of _tkinter not being found. Likewise it is not found when I try to do an import _tkinter interactively. I then proceeded to install Tcl and Tk and python-tk and one of the IDLE versions being offered (none were labelled 2.5) but _tkinter still does not get imported.

• How small is *too small* for an opensource project?

  I have a fair number of smaller projects / libraries that I have been using over the past 2 years. I am thinking about moving them to Google Code to make it easier to share with co-workers and easier to import them into new projects on my own environments. The are things like a simple FSMs, CAN (Controller Area Network) drivers, and GPIB drivers. Most of them are small (less than 500 lines), so it makes me wonder are these types of things too small for a stand alone open-source project? Note that I would like to make it opensource because it does not give me, or my company, any real advantage.

  Hi I am using 3-legged-oauth to import a users' Google contacts in my app. I did not find the ContactsClient library but i was using only the ContacsService and i was fetching the ContactsFeed but that resulted to not having a lot of data.   Hi, I'm using the cookielib module to handle HTTP cookies when using the urllib2 module in Python 2.6 in a way similar to this snippet: import cookielib, urllib2 cj = cookielib.CookieJar() opener = urllib2.build_opener(urllib2.HTTPCookieProcessor(cj)) r = opener.open("http://example.com/") I'd like to store the cookies in a database. I don't know whats better - serialize the CookieJar object and store it or extract the cookies from the CookieJar and store that. I don't know which one's better or how to implement either of them. I should be also be able to recreate the CookieJar object. Could someone help me out with the above? Thanks in advance.

• MySQL INSERT data does not get stored in proper db, only temporary?

  I'm having trouble with MySQL or Python and can't seem to isolate the problem. INSERTs only seem to last the run of the script and are not stored in the database. • matplotlib.pyplot, preserve aspect ratio of the plot

  Assuming we have a polygon coordinates as polygon = [(x1, y1), (x2, y2), ...], the following code displays the polygon: import matplotlib.pyplot as plt plt.fill(*zip(*polygon)) plt.show() By default it is trying to adjust the aspect ratio so that the polygon (or whatever other diagram) fits inside the window, and automatically changing it so that it fits even after resizing. Which is great in many cases, except when you are trying to estimate visually if the image is distorted. How to fix the aspect ratio to be strictly 1:1? (Not sure if "aspect ratio" is the right term here, so in case it is not - I need both X and Y axes to have 1:1 scale, so that (0, 1) on both X and Y takes an exact same amount of screen space. And I need to keep it 1:1 no matter how I resize the window.)

• Reusing MSBuild targets for different build types

  I have got a problem with reusing the same MSBuild targets for different build types on TFS. Let me describe the situation. I have got two build types (CI - for continuous integration and RC - for release candidate). So I have got two build types defined in the TFS. Their *.proj files are under: - $/Repository/TeamBuildTypes/CI - $/Repository/TeamBuildTypes/RC Also, I have got some common targets, like: ChnageVersion.taget, Deploy.tagert, etc. and I import them in the main *.proj file. Unfortunaltely, I have to keep two copies of them, one in each build type. I've been struggling to have only one copy of the common targets somewhere, but I give up. I can't do it, because when the build starts on a build agent, the build files are downloaded from: $/Repository/TeamBuildTypes/CI only. How can I make the build agent / TFS / whatever to download also $/Repository/TeamBuildTypes/Common for example?

• C++ : Lack of Standardization at the Binary Level

  Why ISO/ANSI didn't standardize C++ at the binary level? There are many portability issues with C++, which is only because of lack of it's standardization at the binary level. Don Box writes, (quoting from his book Essential COM, chapter COM As A Better C++) C++ and Portability Once the decision is made to distribute a C++ class as a DLL, one is faced with one of the fundamental weaknesses of C++, that is, lack of standardization at the binary level. Although the ISO/ANSI C++ Draft Working Paper attempts to codify which programs will compile and what the semantic effects of running them will be, it makes no attempt to standardize the binary runtime model of C++. The first time this problem will become evident is when a client tries to link against the FastString DLL's import library from a C++ developement environment other than the one used to build the FastString DLL. Are there more benefits Or loss of this lack of binary standardization?

• In iPhone OS, what UTI represents a plain ol' text file?

  I'm attempting to make use of the UIDocumentInteractionController mechanism in iPhone OS 3.2, but I'm struggling to figure out exactly how to construct a UTI that it likes. I've gotten as far as attempting to set "public.plain-text", but it's hard to test whether this is the correct UTI for a plain text document, since I can't tell whether the issue is that my iPad doesn't have any apps that support plain text import. (I figured Pages would, but I suppose perhaps not, since it will attempt and fail to load any files with the extension .pages, regardless of UTI). Any seasoned OS X developers that can help on this?

  IS THERE A WAY FOR A OPTION TO SELECT WHICH PDFS TO SHOW WITH THE FPDI FUNCTION? • Making a textfile into a list in matlab?

  I have a textfile and would like to import it onto Matlab and make it a list Person1 name = steven grade = 11 age= 17 Person2 name = mike grade = 9 age= 15 Person3 name = taylor grade = 11 age= 17 There are a few hundred entries like these above. Each are seperated by a blank line I was thinking I could scan the text and make the information between each blank line into an item in the list. I also would like to be able to look up each person by name once I have a list like the one below. I want something like x = [Person1 Person2 Person3 name = steven name = mike name = taylor grade = 11 grade = 9 grade = 11 age = 17 age = 15 age = 17] This seems very straight forward but I have been having trouble with this so far, I may be overlooking something. anyone have any ideas or advice?
