  • Is there a better way to deal with reserved characters when parsing XML/JSON data on the iPhone?

    - by Charles S.
    The following code works, but it's ugly and creates a bunch of autoreleased objects. I'm using similar code for parsing reserved HTML characters as well (for quotes, & symbols, etc). I'm just wondering... Is there a cleaner way? NSString *result = [[NSString alloc] initWithString:userInput]; NSString *result2 = [result stringByReplacingOccurrencesOfString:@"#" withString:@"\%23"]; NSString *result3 = [result2 stringByReplacingOccurrencesOfString:@" " withString:@"\%20"]; formatted = [[result3 stringByReplacingOccurrencesOfString:@"&" withString:@"\%26"] retain]; [result release];

  • iphone - why is this flip animation using layers not working?

    - by Digital Robot
I would like to make an animation that goes like this: imagine a picture sitting on a shelve. It drops from the shelve and as it falls it rotates along the horizontal axis and translates along the vertical axis. I would like to do this with perspective and the back side should be the image reversed, like the picture is a kind of slide. I have done this: CALayer* layer = myImageView.layer; layer.doubleSided = YES; CAKeyframeAnimation* animationTransform = [CAKeyframeAnimation animationWithKeyPath:@"transform"]; CATransform3D startTransform = CATransform3DIdentity; CATransform3D endTransform = CATransform3DTranslate (layer.transform, 0.0f, 200.0f, 0.0f); endTransform = CATransform3DRotate (endTransform, degreesToRadian(350.0f), 1.0f, 0.0f, 0.0f); endTransform.m34 = 1.0 / -500; NSArray *values = [NSArray arrayWithObjects: [NSValue valueWithCATransform3D:startTransform], [NSValue valueWithCATransform3D:endTransform], nil]; [animationTransform setValues:values]; NSArray *tempos = [NSArray arrayWithObjects: [NSNumber numberWithFloat:0.0f], [NSNumber numberWithFloat:0.7f], nil]; [animationTransform setKeyTimes:tempos]; NSArray *timing = [NSArray arrayWithObjects: [CAMediaTimingFunction functionWithName:kCAMediaTimingFunctionEaseInEaseOut], nil]; [animationTransform setTimingFunctions:timing]; animationTransform.fillMode = kCAFillModeRemoved; animationTransform.removedOnCompletion = YES; animationTransform.repeatCount = 1; animationTransform.duration = 3.7f; animationTransform.cumulative = YES; the result of this has nothing to do with anything. The result is: the image translates down an inch on the screen and then up half inch. Then it disappears and appears at its starting position again. What am I missing? thanks

  • How to make RegexKitLite w/ iPhone SDK produce a list of all matches +/- and also return surrounding

    - by Matt
I'd like to create a regular expression that will match and return based on the following criteria: 1) I have N search terms entered by a user 2) I have a body of text. 3) I want to return a list of all the occurrences of all the search terms entered by the user plus surrounding context. I think (\w+\W+){,4}(", ")(\W+\w+){,4} might work. 4) I don't know how to use RegexKitLite at all. Do I invoke a RegexKitLite class? or does it interface into NSString somehow?

  • Converting image to Black & White image on iPhone SDK issues.

    - by KfirS
Hello, I've used a familiar code to convert image to Black & White which I've founded on several forums. The code is: CGColorSpaceRef colorSapce = CGColorSpaceCreateDeviceGray(); CGContextRef context = CGBitmapContextCreate(nil, originalImage.size.width, originalImage.size.height, 8, originalImage.size.width, colorSapce, kCGImageAlphaNone); CGContextSetInterpolationQuality(context, kCGInterpolationHigh); CGContextSetShouldAntialias(context, NO); CGContextDrawImage(context, CGRectMake(0, 0, originalImage.size.width, originalImage.size.height), [originalImage CGImage]); CGImageRef bwImage = CGBitmapContextCreateImage(context); CGContextRelease(context); CGColorSpaceRelease(colorSapce); UIImage *resultImage = [UIImage imageWithCGImage:bwImage]; // This is result B/W image. CGImageRelease(bwImage); return resultImage; When I'm using this code with on Horizontal image it's work fine, but when I'm trying a to use this code on Vertical image, the result is disproportionate image and rotate 90 degree left. Can anyone know what could be the problem? Thanks, Kfir.

  • Can I tell if the iPhone has a passcode?

    - by tewha
I'm developing an application that asks for a PIN when you start it. That's not great, but I can live with it. The problem is I'm being asked to ask for the PIN each time the phone wakes from sleep, too. Combined with the OS asking for its passcode, it's too much. Is there any legitimate way to detect if the phone has a passcode required for waking, so I can skip requiring a PIN in this case? I don't want to know the PIN and I don't actually care if it was locked (for instance, if the phone was asleep very briefly), I just want to know that the data is in some way "protected."

  • Why do .png backgrounds appear black on iPhone device but not simulator?

    - by David Rea
I started with a .tiff file and used GraphicConverter to change it to a .png and set a transparency color. Worked fine in the simulator but when I pushed to the device the transparency color became black. Tested with a .png I downloaded from the net and that worked fine, so it seems to only happen with some files. Thus I suspect it has something to do with the way GraphicConverter writes the .pngs, but I don't know enough about file formats to debug it. Any ideas/suggestions? Ideally I'd like to programatically treat all .pngs because my app allowed dynamic loading of arbitrary files, so I can't verify the transparency beforehand.

  • iPhone SDK: How to store the time each word was typed?

    - by Harkonian
My problem is twofold: 1) I'm trying to determine an eloquent way to allow the user to type into a UITextView and store the time each word was typed into an array. The time will be a float which starts at 0 when the user begins to type. 2) Conversely, I'd like the user to be able to tap on a word in the UITextView and display the time that word was typed (displaying in an NSLog() is fine). Considerations that may throw a wrench into a possible approach -- what if the user goes back to the top of the text and starts typing or to the middle of the text? Even a suggested approach without code would be appreciated, because right now I'm drawing a blank.

  • How to backup data stored with Core Data - iPhone app?

    - by Alex
I'm using sqlite for the persistent store, so could I just upload the .sqlite file to, for example, Amazon S3 as a way of providing users with the ability to backup their app data? Then for restoring just download it back and replace the existing .sqlite file in the app's folder. Does anybody see any issues with that? Has anyone done it? Any other suggestions on how to implement data backup feature?

  • Does iPhone SDK Objective C support functions inside of functions?

    - by Moshe
I know that javascript, for example supports functions inside of functions, like so: function doSomething(){ function doAnothingThing(){ //this function is redefined every time doSomething() is called and only exists inside doSomething() } //you can also stick it inside of conditions if(yes){ function doSomethingElse(){ //this function only exists if yes is true } } } Does objective-c support this? Theoretical example: -(void) doSomething:(id) sender{ -(void) respondToEvent: (id) sender{ //theoretically? ... please? } } BONUS: What is the proper term for a "local" function?

  • Creating Thumbnails in Build Phase of iPhone App Xcode project?

    - by nephilite
Hey All, I have a group of png files in my bundle; but I also want smaller versions of them to be used at my app as well. Right now I am just resizing them all manually and putting them in the bundle as well: so i might have Graphic_1.png and Graphic_1-thumbnail.png. Instead, is there anyway to do something like: at build time, take all my png assets and create 1/4 scale versions of them, and save them into the bundle as well, with the -thumbnail in the filename as above? Thanks!

  • How to know when the MPMoviePlayerController has been paused in iPhone?

    - by iPhoney
I want to add an overlay view for my video when the video is paused by the user. Is there any way to get the pause notification from MPMoviePlayerController? According to Apple Doc, there should be ways to do this but I can't find which notification should I use for this purpose. Quote: In addition to being notified when playback finishes, interested clients can be notified in the following situations: -When the movie player begins playing, is paused, or begins seeking forward ... For more information, see the Notifications section in this reference.

  • How do I make a UIAlertView happen only on the first start-up of an iPhone app?

    - by user309245
I'm using the UIAlertView to make a pop-up happen once the app has started up. It works fine but I only want the pop up to happen on the first start-up of the app. At the moment I've got the UIAlertView in the AppDelegate class, after the application didFinishLaunching. Here is my code at the moment. - (BOOL)application:(UIApplication *)application didFinishLaunchingWithOptions:(NSDictionary *)launchOptions { sleep(4); UIAlertView *alert = [[UIAlertView alloc] initWithTitle:@"Welcome!" message:@"SAMPLE!!!" delegate:nil cancelButtonTitle:@"OK" otherButtonTitles:nil]; [alert show]; [alert release]; I'm new to app development so sorry if this is simple. Thanks in advance! :)

  • How do I break down an NSTimeInterval into year, months, days, hours, minutes and seconds on iPhone?

    - by willc2
I have a time interval that spans years and I want all the time components from year down to seconds. My first thought is to integer divide the time interval by seconds in a year, subtract that from a running total of seconds, divide that by seconds in a month, subtract that from the running total and so on. That just seems convoluted and I've read that whenever you are doing something that looks convoluted, there is probably a built-in method. Is there? I integrated Alex's 2nd method into my code. It's in a method called by a UIDatePicker in my interface. NSDate *now = [NSDate date]; NSDate *then = self.datePicker.date; NSTimeInterval howLong = [now timeIntervalSinceDate:then]; NSDate *date = [NSDate dateWithTimeIntervalSince1970:howLong]; NSString *dateStr = [date description]; const char *dateStrPtr = [dateStr UTF8String]; int year, month, day, hour, minute, sec; sscanf(dateStrPtr, "%d-%d-%d %d:%d:%d", &year, &month, &day, &hour, &minute, &sec); year -= 1970; NSLog(@"%d years\n%d months\n%d days\n%d hours\n%d minutes\n%d seconds", year, month, day, hour, minute, sec); When I set the date picker to a date 1 year and 1 day in the past, I get: 1 years 1 months 1 days 16 hours 0 minutes 20 seconds which is 1 month and 16 hours off. If I set the date picker to 1 day in the past, I am off by the same amount. Update: I have an app that calculates your age in years, given your birthday (set from a UIDatePicker), yet it was often off. This proves there was an inaccuracy, but I can't figure out where it comes from, can you?

  • Help! Obj-C/Iphone programming: extracting string from html text and reading off line by line

    - by royden
hihi, I have this html text response from a particular website: <tr><td valign="top"><img src="/icons/image2.gif" alt="[IMG]"></td><td><a href="crsdsdfs2221.jpg">crash-2221.jpg</a></td><td align="right">14-Jun-2010 14:29 Notice for every line, there is this href=".__", which is an image file with random name and random format. I would like to extract that string within the inverted commas out so that i can append it into a URL path and download the image. I've been looking through this documentation from apple: http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/documentation/cocoa/conceptual/strings/Articles/SearchingStrings.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/20000149-CJBBGBAI on String programming but couldn't find one that fits my bill. Also after reading it, what code can I use to ensure that I will be reading the next line the next time my function is called( because I want to download the next picture). Hope some kind soul can help me out, thanks!
