• Server configurations for hosting MySQL database

  I have a web application which uses a MySQL database hosted on a virtual server. I've been using this server when I started the application and when the database was really small. Now it has grown and the server is not able to handle the db, causing frequent db errors. I'm planning to get a server and I need suggestions for that. Like I said, the db is now 9 GB, and is growing considerably fast. There are a number of tables with millions of rows, which are frequently updated and queried. The most frequent error the db shows is Lock wait timeout exceeded. Previously there used to be "The total number of locks exceeds the lock table size" errors too, but I could avoid it by increasing Innodb buffer pool size. Please suggest what configurations should I look for in the server I should buy. I read somewhere that the db should ideally have a buffer pool size greater than the size of its data, so in my case I guess I'd need memory gt 9 GB. What other things should I look for in the server? Just tell me if I should give you more info about the

• Only one domains not resolving via Windows DNS server at multiple locations, but is at others

  I'm having quite a weird issue. Had mail delivery issues to a specific domain. After looking closer, I realized that the DNS for that domain isn't resolving via the in-house Windows 2003 SP2 DNS server. C:\>nslookup foodmix.net Server: DC.DOMAIN.com Address: 10.1.1.1 DNS request timed out. timeout was 2 seconds. DNS request timed out. timeout was 2 seconds. *** Request to DC.DOMAIN.com timed-out (DC.DOMAIN.com and 10.1.1.1 are generic values to replace the actual ones) Even if I run this nslookup from the DC.DOMAIN.com server, I get the same result. However, all other requests are working as they should. I tried it on severs at completely separate organizations on different networks(Windows 2003 AD servers). The weird thing is some of these were having the same exact issue. However using public DNS servers work. I have tried clearing the DNS cache, restarting the server, restarting the services, etc. Nothing has worked. One weird event I noticed in the DNS Server Event Logs that might be related is an event ID of 5504 with the following description: The DNS server encountered an invalid domain name in a packet from 192.33.4.12. The packet will be rejected. The event data contains the DNS packet. For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp. In the data section below, I can see the following mentioned: ns2.webhostingstar.com Which happens to be the nameserver for the domain in question. Several discussion threads and a MS KB have pointed to disabling EDNS. I have done this via "dnscmd /config /enableednsprobes 0" and it has not fixed the issue.

• PostgreSQL failover cluster on Windows Server

  We are looking for advice on how to setup a basic failover cluster for our application: We will be using 4 machines running Microsoft Windows Server (most probably 2003). All four will always run our application, which is essentially a web service. Load balancing is "outsourced" - somebody else handles the distribution of the web requests among the servers. Only one of the servers will be running the PostgreSQL server actively at any given time. Another server (of the four) also has the DB installed, but is on standby/passive. The DB data is stored on shared storage. No copying data between servers. Reads are done very frequently by many end-users, and in rather small chunks of data. Writes are done much less frequently, by less users, and in very large bulks of data. Now, how can one configure Microsoft Cluster Service to keep only one instance of the DB server and 4 instances (1 per server) of our application at all times? And does PostgreSQL integrate neatly with MSCS at all? Update: Instead of keeping the data on shared storage, I also consider using log shipping to replicate data on a couple of DB servers. There are two issues with this option: Log shipping only makes sure that I have a second server that gets all of the data and is ready to take over. How do I implement the actual failure detection and failover switch? Switching back: Suppose the master fails and the system automatically fails over to the slave, and later the master comes back online. I understand that with WAL shipping this will require to reconfigure the log shipping once again, and that switching back is far from seamless. Is that so?

• How to setup an IPSec / GRE tunnel on Windows Server 2008

  I have a Windows Server 2008 that has a single network interface configured with a public IP address. My business partner has a private network. From my server, I need to access all the devices on his private network, and those devices must be able to access my server. My business partner has a standard solution for these requirements. They will setup an IPSec + GRE tunnel to my server. They told me, that I will need an additional public IP address for this to work. If it really is necessary, there is no problem, I can get an additional public IP address, although it will be assigned to the same physical network interface. I assume that on my server I will have both public IP addresses and also the private IP address from the tunnel (the same that is visible for the devices inside the private network). What alternatives do I have? Is it possible to configure this tunnel on my Windows Server 2008? Can it be done using only Windows tools, or do I need an additional free / commercial VPN software? If it cannot be done directly on Windows, can I setup an additional virtual machine running Linux, that will handle the IPSec + GRE tasks? How to do it? If it cannot be done on a virtual linux box, will I have to buy and setup a Cisco router to handle the IPSec + GRE tasks? Thanks for your opinions. I'm watching this question to clarify any issues or questions.

• Unable to logon using terminal server connection

  I have several W2K3 SP2 servers, admin TS enabled. I discovered this morning, I was unable to logon into some of them. I've a couple of Citrix servers in different farms, a SAP (IA64) app server and a cvs server. All of them show same sympthoms; remote connections are refused. I've been able to logon locally, and terminal server service is up, there are no users (so connections are not depleted). There are no errors in log in most servers. One of the Citrix ones, reported following errors: Event ID 50 Source TermDD Type Error Description The RDP protocol component X.224 detected an error in the protocol stream and has disconnected the client. and Event ID 1006 Source TermService Type Error Description The terminal server received large number of incomplete connections. The system may be under attack. Anyway, I suppose these errors appear because server isn't working, and Citrix users try to logon massively. (I nmap'ed server and port seems up). I've solved this problem rebooting before, but with so many servers affected it seems like a crappy workaround. Any idea about troubleshooting it properly? Thanks in advance

• My Tech Ed North America Preview - Certification Edition

  In my previous TechEd North America Preview, I addressed all the content I wanted to see at the show. This time, we shall turn our attention to the certifications I might try to pick up. If you have never been to TechEd North America before, one of the greatest things about the event is an on-site certification center. If you have a couple hours to spare, you can walk up to a test. The first test on my agenda is 70-5231. I took this update test once, but did not do well on the MVC portion2. A few practice tests later, and I think I'm ready to fake that section. After that, I need to complete my road to being a master. The good folks here at work have been having a real love / hate relationship with the idea of me become an MCM in SQL Server3. Of course, before I do that, I need to finally take the SQL Administration tests. Thus, we shall add 70-4324 and 70-4505 to the list. Speaking of MCM, TechEd North America will have a special on test 88-9706. This test is normally $500, and you have to find a place to take it7. However, there is a special 50% off rate for people who take it on location. With those kind of prices, I may just take it as a form of study guide. As a final push, I may take some Windows Phone exams. I mentioned in my previous post that I may attend the 70-5998 Exam Cram session. Unfortunately, I will be staffing the Hands-On-Lab at that time. As we know, this has never stopped me from taking a test. This may lead to fits of 70-5069, but after we've come this far... That should complete my list. Do I really think I'll find time to take 6 tests at TechEd North America? Probably not. I have done it at TechEd North America before, but that was before I was TechEd North America staff. I also had a co-worker pass 9 in one year, but he basically did nothing but travel to Orlando in 2007 to take tests. And what's the point of attending a HUGE conference if you don't network?   I'm looking at setting up a blog, and I think I want to go the static website compiler route, rather than the perhaps more conventional Wordpress route. I'm looking at using blogofile, but could use jekyll as well. These tools recommend using disqus to embed a javascript comment widget on blog posts. I'd go that route, but I'd rather host the comments myself, rather than use a third party. I could certainly write my own dirt-simple comment server, but I was wondering if anyone knew of one that already exists (of the open source variety). Thanks!

• Ubuntu server on VM outgoing network(ping google.com) working, incoming(127.0.0.1:8080) is not. Was working previusly

  I have recently installed Ubuntu server with LAMP,OpenSSH and mail on Oracle's VM, it's incoming networking was recently working, apache's default message could be seen when opening 127.0.0.1:8080. But now it's not! :( Could you give me any tips? I couldn't google anything that helped me. :( I'm running windows 7 with such settings http://www.bildites.lv/images/3d91ikwtraw0ld7lhv.png I recently used apt-get --purge remove phpmyadmin.   Recently I had interesting experience at one conference. My PowerPivot plugin got disabled and I had no clue how to enable the same. After while, I figured out how to enable the same. Once I got back from the event, I searched online and realize that many other people online are facing the same problem. Here is how I solved the problem. When I started Excel it did not load PowerPivot plugin. I found in option>> Add in the plug in to be disabled. I enabled the plugin and it worked very well. Let us see that with images. • SQL SERVER – Detect Virtual Log Files (VLF) in LDF

  In one of the recent training engagements, I was asked if it true that there are multiple small log files in the large log file (LDF). I found this question very interesting as the answer is yes. Multiple small Virtual Log Files commonly known as VLFs together make an LDF file. The writing of the VLF is sequential and resulting in the writing of the LDF file is sequential as well. This leads to another talk that one does not need more than one log file in most cases. However, in short, you can use following DBCC command to know how many Virtual Log Files or VLFs are present in your log file. DBCC LOGINFO You can find the result of above query to something as displayed in following image. You can see the column which is marked as 2 which means it is active VLF and the one with 0 which is inactive VLF. • Moodle Inconsistencies, Flowplayer, or Server?

  We are trying to decide if an issue we're having with Moodle and our videos is a flowplayer issue, a video issue, or a network issue. Any input is welcome. We've had videos in our Moodle (version 1.9, we're working on an upgrade on a different server) up for weeks, or even months. After that time, some of them have suddenly just stopped working. When they don't work, they just don't load. The videos work when we first upload them. With flowplayer, we don't get errors, just a blank screen. We have re-uploaded our videos several times when this has happened, but we really would like to know what's causing it so that we can prevent it. There are also no keyframe issues with the video. We are currently trying to find answers through various searches, but have not had any luck. I will continue to post more info as I come across it...but if there's anyone who knows or has ideas, it's welcome.

  Possible Duplicate: Can you help me with my capacity planning? I'm planning to start my own high-performance server and then use collocation services for keeping it up and running. I'm planning to USE it for processing videos and keeping big video site up! (using FFMpeg, MENcoder and etc.) I just need recommendations on whether listed hardware is good enough and will work together well and fast enough. Do I need anything else (missed something). I remember about CPU coolers though! ;) I'm planning to use SSD drives so please tell me if it's going to work just as regular HDDs (but much faster)? Are they going to be used as RAID (is this possible for SSDs)? Here is what I would like to get: Intel ® Server System SR1600URHSR (Urbanna) or Intel® Server System SR1695WBAC 2 x Intel Xeon X5650 4 x 16Gb DDR-III 1333MHz Kingston ECC Reg (KVR13R9D4/16) 3 x (or maybe 4x) 480Gb SSD Intel 520 Series (SSDSC2CW480A3K5) Which server system would be better? Is listed hardware new/good enough and worth buying it at the moment? Should I probably take a look at something slightly more expensive but more up to date and powerful, may be? After all as software I would like to use CentOS 6 64 bit + WHM/CPanel? Any other suggestions on maybe cheaper and same/more powerful server management system but WHM? What most important points to keep in mind when starting/maintaining your own server?

• Ping server NETBIOS name returns wrong IP and "Destination host unreachable"

  Problem server is Windows 2008 R2 VM running on VMWare ESXi 4 host. Single network adapter manually assigned single IP address (192.168.1.11). When I ping the server from any other network computer, it returns 192.168.1.124 and "Destination host unreachable". Yesterday I found a second network adapter assigned to this server with an IP of 169.254... indicating it had no real valid IP. Using the MAC addresses I determined which adapter was not needed/not wanted, and removed it using VMWare systems. This is the network Printer Server and, understandably, nothing is printing right now. I've looked at the solutions here Why was my ping answered by a different IP address than the one pinged? and they aren't applicable to my situation for the following reasons: Output of arp -a on another computer returns the correct IP address (.1.11) assigned to the correct MAC address, the incorrect IP .1.124 is not listed, and the MAC of the network adapter I removed yesterday is not listed at all. I checked out the Microsoft KB article which listed pretty much my exact symptoms ( http://support.microsoft.com/kb/981953 ) and it says to check binding orders and look for hidden adapters. But there are no hidden adapters, and there is only one Network Adapter listed in the Binding Order list. Essentially, I can communicate from the server TO any other network device, but I cannot communicate from any other network device TO the server. Help!   I have just found a very good resource about Hekaton (In-memory OLTP feature in the SQL Server 2014). On the Codeplex site you can find the newest Hekaton samples - https://msftdbprodsamples.codeplex.com/releases/view/114491. The latest samples we have were related to the CTP2 version but the newest will work with the RTM version.There are some issues fixed you might find if you tried to run the previous samples on the RTM version:Update (Apr 28, 2014): Fixed an issue where the isolation level for sample stored procedures demonstrating integrity checks was too low. The transaction isolation level for the following stored procedures was updated: Sales.uspInsertSpecialOfferProductinmem, Sales.uspDeleteSpecialOfferinmem, Production.uspInsertProductinmem, and Production.uspDeleteProductinmem.

• Inconsistent DHCP replies with Windows 2008R2 DHCP server

  I've got a Windows 2008R2 standard server running DHCP services. We've noticed that certain clients are receiving inconsistent DHCP replies. We have over 175 Windows workstations in this VLAN that don't seem to have trouble getting DHCP leases. However, PXE-booting clients trying to reach our DHCP server are able to get a lease inconsistently. Additionally, we tried using the "dhcping" tool against our DHCP server and found that roughly two of every three requests time out with "no answer" -- and this holds true when we set the timeout value on dhcping to 20seconds. After a failed attempt, however, we may get a dhcp lease reply immediately with dhcping. This leads me to believe that this issue isn't confined to PXE booting clients, but something more systemic with my LAN layer2 or DHCP. And that possibly my 175 windows clients are experiencing this in some form without my knowledge. We have over 30% of our scope available so the addresses are there. I was unable to find anything in the Windows server "DHCP-Server" log. Of course, my goal is to have my DHCP server reply to every request that it receives on the LAN!

  I've been reading: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuCloudInfrastructure It's fascinating stuff, but documentation seems a bit sparse. Where I work, we have this aging, clunky VMWare ESXi setup for all our internal servers. I'd really like to read up on possible migration or just information on Orchestra, integration with Juju, etc that isn't a bunch of loosely connected blog posts. :p This is concerning 11.10 and, presumably, 12.04. To make this less vague, specifically documentation on: Orchestra - features, comparisons, videos, etc Integrating Juju with Orchestra - I'm familiar with using Juju for deploying on AWS, but that wiki page glances over connecting it to orchestra Building a private cloud - Advantages, using/deploying Openstack, etc Working with internal networks - Configuring DMZs, setting rules, etc Any recommended books would be appreciated too. I didn't intend for this to be a 'do all my homework for me! LMGTFY' post, I'm just hungry for information and haven't found a good repository of knowledge for much of this.

• Using Sql Server Change Data Capture with a frequently changing schema

  We are looking into enabling Sql Server Change Data Capture for a new subsystem we are building. It's not really because we need it, but we are being pushed for having a complete history traceability, and CDC would nicely solve this requirement with minimum effort on our parts. We are following an agile development process, which in this case means that we frequently make changes to the database schema, e.g. adding new columns, moving data to other columns, etc. We did a small test where we created a table, enabled CDC for that table, and then added a new column to the table. Changes to the new column is not registered in the CDC table. Is there a mechanism to update the CDC table to the new schema, and are there any best practices to how you deal with captured data when migrating the database schema?

• Network access lags for Win7 when server network utilization is high

  We have a Dell PE2950 file server running Windows 2008, hosting a DFS namespace of ~1.2 TB. This server has two Broadcom 1Gbps NICs teamed together. When there is high traffic going to the server across the network (greater than 200 Mbps), any Windows 7 client accessing a DFS share at the time experiences severe performance problems. For example: Computer A has an AutoCAD drawing opened directly from the DFS share. Performance is normal, not causing any issues. Computer B begins a file transfer, putting a 11GB file onto a different DFS namespace, on the same server Computer A immediately notices lag while using AutoCAD. The cursor momentarily freezes within AutoCAD every 10 seconds or so, and any browsing of the DFS share is extremely slow. Computer B completes file transfer, and performance resumes to normal for Computer A. This is only affecting Windows 7 clients, using a variety of hardware (desktop + laptop). All of our Windows XP clients see no performance impact during the file transfer. Things I have tried with no change: Had Computer A work from an entirely different RAID array from the file transfer destination Updated NIC drivers on clients and server Enabled TCP offload and receive side scaling on the server NIC (previously disabled when the issue began) Antivirus disabled during file transfer I am currently having a user test applications other than AutoCAD when the file transfer occurs, and will update the question with that result. Does anyone have any recommendations for resolution or additional troubleshooting steps?
