• Visual Basic 2010 Language Enhancements

  Earlier this month Microsoft released Visual Studio 2010, the .NET Framework 4.0 (which includes ASP.NET 4.0), and new versions of their core programming languages: C# 4.0 and Visual Basic 10 (also referred to as Visual Basic 2010). Previously, the C# and Visual Basic programming languages were managed by two separate teams within Microsoft, which helps explain why features found in one language was not necessarily found in the other. For example, C# 3.0 introduced collection initializers, which enable developers to define the contents of a collection when declaring it; however, Visual Basic 9 did not support collection initializers. Conversely, Visual Basic has long supported optional parameters in methods, whereas C# did not. Recently, Microsoft merged the Visual Basic and C# teams to help ensure that C# and Visual Basic grow together. As explained by Microsoft program manager Jonathan Aneja, "The intent is to make the languages advance together. When major functionality is introduced in one language, it should appear in the other as well. ... [T]hat any task you can do in one language should be as simple in the other." To this end, with version 4.0 C# now supports optional parameters and named arguments, two features that have long been part of Visual Basic's vernacular. • OS X Server DNS management

  I have an OS X 10.6 Server running, which has PHP, Apache, MySQL, and DNS running on it. I want to take the DNS management out of the Server Admin App. I know that the DNS configuration files (the ones BIND uses) are plain text files (which have to obey some rules, obviously). The main reason for this is because I wanted to setup DKIM for one of my domains, and I had to add a TXT record to the subdomain pm._domainkey.example.com. Server Admin did not let me add that subdomain, because of the "invalid" underscore character. I searched for web based DNS management tools (the ones that I would install on my server and would allow me to manage my DNS records), but I couldn't find any good ones. (There were a couple that I managed to install, but they didn't see the configuration that I already had setup in Server Admin). Now I'm looking into editing the config files directly, but I don't know where they're located. This is a test / development server, so messing it up wouldn't be such a disaster. I know "I shouldn't do this", but I want to :). Thanks for your help.

• SharePoint and COMException (0x80004005): Cannot complete this action

  I ran into a small issue today working on a deployment.  We were moving a custom ASP.NET control from my development environment into a SharePoint layout page on a staging environment .  I was expecting some minor issues to arise since I had developed the control in an ASP.NET website project, but after getting everything moved over we got an obscure COMException error the that looked like this: Cannot complete this action. Please try again. Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code. Exception Details: System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException: Cannot complete this action. [COMException (0x80004005): Cannot complete this action. .Lengthy stack trace goes here. Everything in the custom control was built using managed code, so we weren't sure why a COMException would suddenly appear. The control made use of an ITemplate to define its UI, so there was a lot of markup and binding code inside the template. As such, we started taking chunks of the template out of the layout page and eventually the error went away.  It was being caused by a section of code where we were calling a custom utility method inside some binding code: <%# WebUtility.FormatDecimal(.) %> Solution: It turns out that we were missing an Assembly and Import directive at the top of the page to let the page know where to find this method.  After adding these to the page, the error went away and everything worked great.  So a COMException (0x80004005) Cannot complete this action error is just SharePoint's friendly way of letting you know you're missing an assembly or imports reference.

• Creating block devices for openstack deployment using MAAS and juju (nova-volume deployment)

  Hi, I'm currently trying to get a openstack deployment working by using MAAS with 9 nodes and juju. To do this I found this guide, working with ubuntu 12.04 LTS https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuCloudInfrastructure and followed it as good as I can. After a vigorous amount of trial and error I finally got to the point where I'm supposed to deploy nova-volume using the "custom" config file. However when my node is started and shows up as running in the "juju status" report the service reports the installation failed. I'm trying to install with juju jitsu by the way. I think it has something to do with the following statement in the openstack.cfg file : nova-volume: # This must be a free block device that is writable on the nova-volume host. block-device: "xvdb" overwrite: "true" I did some research and found that (at least I think) this refers to a Xen Virtual Drive/device, and because the device is not present on the node it's being deployed to, the installation fails. What I don't understand is how I am supposed to have such a block device available on a machine which was completely managed by MAAS. Does anyone here have any experience with this and knows of a way to solve this, or am I missing something big here. Some kind of missing link between the MAAS and a separate XEN host ? My MAAS server is ubuntu 12.04LTS Server. All help is welcome. Kind regards, Tom

• Seeking htaccess help: Converting multiple subdomains (both http and https) to www.domain.com using .htaccess

  I've been trying to get an answer to this question on other forums (the folks at SuperUser thought this was the place I needed to post) and via my connections, but I haven't gotten very far. Hopefully you guys can help me find an answer: I've got a dozen old subdomains that have been indexed by Google. These have been indexed as both http AND https. I've managed to redirect all the subdomains properly, provided they are not https, but can't get any of the https subdomains to property redirect. Here's the code I'm using: RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^subdomain1.mysite.com$ [NC] RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.mysite.com/$1 [R=301,L] RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^subdomain2.mysite.com$ [NC] RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.mysite.com/$1 [R=301,L] RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^subdomain3.mysite.com$ [NC] RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.mysite.com/$1 [R=301,L] This works great until someone goes to: https://subdomain2.mysite.com$ which is not redirected back to http://www.mysite.com$ How can I get this to work? Additionally, I'm guessing there is an easier way to make it happen than setting up a dozen pairs of Rewrite conditions/rewrite rule? Is there any way to do this in just a few lines, including one where I list all the subdomains? I'd actually also like to redirect everything on https://www.mysite.com$ to http://www.mysite.com$ except for 3 folders These are mysite.com/secure, mysite.com/store, mysite.com/user -- is there any good way to add this to the htaccess file? • Oracle Australia Supports MS Sydney to Gong Ride by Chris Sainsbury

  What is the Sydney to Gong Ride? The Gong Ride is a one of a kind fundraising event. You can pedal 90 km from Sydney to Wollongong on any day of the year but it's only on the first Sunday of November that you'll experience the camaraderie, fellowship, unity, safey, scenery and sense of achievement for pedalling in support of people living with MS. Well done to the 22 members of the Oracle Sydney to Gong ride on Sunday 6 November. For many, this was the first time riding over distance – officially a 90km event, by GPS about 84km. The event started in Sydney Park, Newtown. We left in a few separate groups between 6.30 and 7.30am – and finished with times between 2 hours 45 mins and 6 hours. With 10,000 riders there was a lot of congestion at the start but that soon thinned out as we left Sydney. It was a great spring day for the event but at 34 degrees it was getting pretty warm once we left the shade of the Royal National Park and carried on over the Sea Cliff bridge and down the coast road towards Wollongong. Unfortunately Dan managed to get himself a facial scrub when someone clipped his front wheel on the descent from Bald Hill lookout. No major incidents thankfully and Dan soldiered on. Most importantly everyone had a good time (even Dan) and we raised $5,800 for Multiple Sclerosis Australia. In total more than $3.7m was raised for this good cause.

• Navigating the Unpredictable Swinging of the Financial Regulation Pendulum

  Written by Guest Blogger: Maureen Clifford, Sr Product Marketing Manager, Oracle The pendulum of the regulatory clock is constantly in motion, albeit often not in any particular rhythm.  Nevertheless, given what many insurers have been through economically, any movement can send shock waves through critical innovation and operational plans.  As pointed out in Deloitte’s 2012 Global Insurance Outlook, the impact of regulatory reform can cause major uncertainty in the area of costs.  As the reality of increasing government regulations settles in, the change that comes along with it creates more challenges in compliance and ultimately on delivering the optimum return on investment.  The result of this changing environment is a proliferation of compliance projects that must be executed with an already constrained set of resources, budget and time. Insurers are confronted by the need to gain visibility into all of their compliance efforts and proactively manage them. Currently that is very difficult to do as these projects often are being managed by groups across the enterprise and they lack a way to coordinate their efforts and drive greater synergies.  With limited visibility and equally limited resources it is no surprise that reporting on project status and determining realistic completion of these projects is only a dream. As a result, compliance deadlines are missed, penalties are incurred, credibility with key stakeholders and the public is jeopardized and returns and competitive advantage go unrealized. Insurers need to ask themselves some key questions: Do I have “one stop” visibility into all of my compliance efforts?  If not, what can I do to change that? What is top priority and how does that impact my already taxed resources? How can I figure out how to best balance my resources to get these compliance projects done as well as keep key innovation and operational efforts on track? How can ensure that I have all the requisite documentation for each compliance project I undertake? Dealing with complying with regulatory efforts is a necessary evil. Don't let the regulatory pendulum sideline your efforts to generate the greatest return on investment for your key stakeholders.

  The latest version of Allen for Umbraco has now hit the Apple App store, we have managed to add some nice improvements to this version that include:Storing location and direction information when photos are taken within the AppEmbedding EXIF data into the images when they are uploadBackground UploadingPull to refresh the media tree Location and DirectionBy default when the camera is used within an application the location and direction that the camera is pointing is not stored within the image meta data. We have now added full support so that this data is now added. We have added a setting which allows you to prevent this data from being uploaded to your website if you do not want the location data to be sent you can turn it off within Allen, Note: Please don't forget that location services do need to be turned on to allow the app to access the images in the phone's asset library.We have had quite a few ideas from users already for using this location data, including logging free parking in Denmark to geo-tagging holiday photos and linking the photos to Google street view. Embedding EXIF dataWe now embed all the meta data available on the iPhone into the image when it is uploaded to your server, this allows you to pull the data out and use it within your site. Have a look at Cultiv's Photo Meta Data package for great example code that allows you to automatically pull this data out and populate properties on your Umbraco media item.We slightly modified the source code of this package to allow the package to always extract the image data, as the default package requires a property to allow the data to be extracted, it's an easy change, if you get stuck add a comment to this post. Background UploadingIf you try to upload multiple images and need to start doing something else on your phone, you can now click the home button and the application will continue to upload your images in the background. As soon as it has finished you will receive a standard Apple notification. Pull to RefreshOur final enhancement has been to add "Pull to refresh" to the media trees, just pull the tree downwards with your finger and it will refresh, this is useful if you are adding items to your media tree while testing your site with Allen for Umbraco. Seventeen is a lot of releases even for a SaaS company and Oracle should be proud of the milestone. The same is true of the emphasis on the pharmaceutical industry vertical. Oracle comes to the pharma CRM market with an assist from Siebel, the one time independent leader in CRM that Oracle bought a few years back. Before the acquisition Siebel and its pharma package had managed to corner about nineteen of the top twenty pharmaceutical companies. For a time in the last decade you could go from job to job as a pharma rep taking your Siebel skills with you and feel right at home. The writing on the wall now though is that pharmaceutical sales is transitioning to a SaaS model and Oracle is managing the transition for its customers. Oracle's done a good job of keeping up with changes in the industry and you have to admit that pharma sales is a different kettle of fish than almost anything else in CRM." • What are the best ways to cope with «one of those days»? [closed]

  I work in a fast-paced startup and am absolutely in love with what I do. Still, I wake up to a bad mood as often as the next guy. I find that forcing myself to play out my day as usual doesn't help — in fact, it only makes it worse, possibly ruining my productivity for the rest of the week. There are several ways I can cope with this, for instance: dropping the current task for the day and getting that awesome but low-priority feature in place; doing some pending research for future development (i.e. digging up ruby gems); spending the day reading and educating myself; just taking the day off. The first three items are productive in themselves, and taking the day off recharges my coding mana for the rest of the week. Being a young developer, I'm pretty sure there's a multitude of alternatives that I haven't come across yet. How can programmers cope with off days? Edit: I am looking for answers related specifically to this profession. I therefore believe that coping with off days in our field is fundamentally different that doing so in other areas. Programmers (especially in a start-up) are a unique breed in this context in the sense that they tend to have a multitude of tasks at hand on any given moment, so they can easily switch between these without wreaking too much havoc. Programmers also tend to work based on clear, concise objectives — provided they are well managed either by themselves or a third party — and hence have a great deal of flexibility when it comes to managing their time. Finally, our line of work creates the opportunity — necessity, if you will — to fit a plethora of tasks not directly related to the current one, such as research and staying on top of new releases and software updates.

• JMX Based Monitoring - Part One

  In all versions of the Oracle Utilities Application Framework there is an ability to use Java Management eXtensions (JMX) to both manage and monitor the various components of the product. This means that sites can use a JSR120 compliant JMX browser or JMX console to view or manage the components of the product with little or no configuration required. In each version we have progressively added JMX capabilities to allow IT groups more detailed information. In Oracle Utilities Application Framework V2.1 and above it was possible to use JMX on the Web Application Server provided Mbeans to allow you to monitor the online component of the product as well as manage the configuration. Also with a few additional java options it is possible to get a good level of detail about the Java Virtual machine including memory and thread usage. In Oracle Utilities Application Framework V2.2 and above, we added support for Java 5 statistics (Java enabled them by default), database pool statistics and also added the ability to manage and moinitor the batch component of the architecture. Now, in Oracle Utilities Application Framework V4 and above, we added support for Java 6 MXBeans, online management of the cache using JMX, additional JVM information and Performance monitoring using JMX. JMX allows the product to be managed from a common console such as Oracle Enterprise Manager, Tivoli, HP OpenView (and a lot more). Over the next week or so I will be compiling a set of blog entries discussing what is available (in summary format) using JMX and how to get access to the JMX statistics for your version of the product.

  parameterMap objects defined by managed beans can help reduce the number of child <parameter> elements listed under an ADF region or dynamic region page definition task flow binding. But more importantly, the parameterMap approach also allows greater flexibility in determining what input parameters are passed to an ADF region or dynamic region. This can be especially helpful when using dynamic regions where each task flow utilized can provide an entirely different set of input parameters. • I want to hit Apex SQL with a big stick

  <Whinge> Thought id just have a little whinge about this product which caused me a load of grief the other day..... So the background was that my development machine had a completely full hard disk which I needed to sort out.  Upon investigation I found the issue was that the msdb database had managed to get very large. This was caused because a long time ago (and I cant even remember why) I tried out Apex SQL.  After a few days I decided to uninstall it and thought nothing more of it.  What I didnt realise was that uninstalling it doesnt actually uninstall it (and it doesnt inform you about this), but there was still some assemblies left on my machine.  Everytime SQL Server was running it was starting the Apex SQL Connection monitor which was then running in the background and regularly recording information in the msdb database.  Over time it had recorded enough to fill the disk. The below article advises how to sort this out by removing this fully so if your having a problem then try this out:http://knowledgebase.apexsql.com/2007/08/how-to-uninstall-apexsqlconnectionmonit_09.htm Once this was sorted out its interesting to read the above article because I just dont think the approach used by the vendor of this software is a very good one.  So for the Apex team just wanted to pass on a thought: If I want to uninstall your product you should tell me if stuff is left on the machine especially if a process will be running which is going to fill my machine with useless data, </Whinge>

• Continuous Physics Engine's Collision Detection Techniques

  I'm working on a purely continuous physics engine, and I need to choose algorithms for broad and narrow phase collision detection. "Purely continuous" means I never do intersection tests, but instead want to find ways to catch every collision before it happens, and put each into "planned collisions" stack that is ordered by TOI. Broad Phase The only continuous broad-phase method I can think of is encasing each body in a circle and testing if each circle will ever overlap another. This seems horribly inefficient however, and lacks any culling. I have no idea what continuous analogs might exist for today's discrete collision culling methods such as quad-trees either. How might I go about preventing inappropriate and pointless broad test's such as a discrete engine does? Narrow Phase I've managed to adapt the narrow SAT to a continuous check rather than discrete, but I'm sure there's other better algorithms out there in papers or sites you guys might have come across. What various fast or accurate algorithm's do you suggest I use and what are the advantages / disatvantages of each? Final Note: I say techniques and not algorithms because I have not yet decided on how I will store different polygons which might be concave, convex, round, or even have holes. I plan to make a decision on this based on what the algorithm requires (for instance if I choose an algorithm that breaks down a polygon into triangles or convex shapes I will simply store the polygon data in this form).

• Imperative vs. LINQ Performance on WP7

  Jesse Liberty had a nice post presenting the concepts around imperative, LINQ and fluent programming to populate a listbox. Check out the post as it’s a great example of some foundational things every .NET programmer should know. I was more interested in what the IL code that would be generated from imperative vs. LINQ was like and what the performance numbers are and how they differ. The code at the instruction level is interesting but not surprising. In fact if you have ReSharper installed you’ll see a squiggly (technical term) in the imperative code that says “Hey Dude, I can convert this to LINQ if you want to be c00L!” (or something like that, it’s the 2010 geek version of Clippy). What about the fluent version? As Jon correctly pointed out in the comments, when you compare the IL for the LINQ code and the IL for the fluent code it’s the same. LINQ and the fluent interface are just syntactical sugar so you decide what you’re most comfortable with. At the end of the day they’re both the same. Now onto the numbers. Again I expected the imperative version to be better performing than the LINQ version (before I saw the IL that was generated). Call it womanly instinct. A gut feel. Whatever. Some of the numbers are interesting though. For Jesse’s example of 50 items, the numbers were interesting. The imperative sample clocked in at 7ms while the LINQ version completed in 4. As the number of items went up, the elapsed time didn’t necessarily climb exponentially. At 500 items they were pretty much the same and the results were similar up to about 50,000 items. After that I tried 500,000 items where the gap widened but not by much (2.2 seconds for imperative, 2.3 for LINQ). It wasn’t until I tried 5,000,000 items where things were noticeable. Imperative filled the list in 20 seconds while LINQ took 8 seconds longer (although personally I wouldn’t suggest you put 5 million items in a list unless you want your users showing up at your door with torches and pitchforks). Here’s the table with the full results. In fact if Windows Phone 7 detects you’re taking more than 10 seconds to do any one thing, it considers the app hung and shuts it down. The results here are for Windows Phone 7 but frankly they're the same for desktop and web apps so feel free to apply it generally. From a programming perspective, choose what you like. Some LINQ statements can get pretty hairy so I usually fall back with my simple mind and write it imperatively. If you really want to impress your friends, write it old school then let ReSharper do the hard work for! Happy programming!
