  • Dutch ACEs SOA Partner Community Award Celebration

    - by JuergenKress
When you win you need to celebrate. This was the line of thinking when I found out that I was part of a group that won the Oracle SOA Community Country Award. Well – thinking about a party is one thing, preparing it and finally having the small party is something completely different. It starts with finding a date that would be suitable for the majority of invited people. As you can imagine the SOA ACEs and ACE Directors have a busy life, that takes them places. Alongside that they are engaged with customers who want to squeeze every bit of knowledge out of them. So everybody is pretty busy (that’s what makes you an ACE). After some deliberation (and checks of international Oracle events, Trip-it, blogs and tweets) a date was chosen. Meeting on a Friday evening for some drinks is probably not a Dutch-only activity. But as some of the ACEs are self-employed they miss the companies around them to organize such events. Come the day a turn-out of almost 50% was great – although I expected some more folks . This was mainly due to some illness and work overload. Luckily the mini-party got going, (alcoholic) beverages were consumed, food was appreciated, a decent picture was made (see below) and all had a good chat and hopefully a good time. (Above from left to right: Eric Elzinga, Andreas Chatziantoniou, Mike van Aalst, Edwin Biemond) All in all a nice evening and certainly a "meeting" which can be repeated.  For the full article please visit Andreas's blog Want to organize a local SOA & BPM community? • Last Night's Phoenix Silverlight UserGroup Meeting -- thanks!

    - by Dave Campbell
14 of us gathered last night for a great presentation. As advertised, Les Brown of Sogeti came out to talk to us about the 4.0 enhancements, and brought along a new graduate and fellow-worker Chris Ross (Congratulations on your degree, again). Good discussion about MEF and Les' approach to using it, all of which is available on CodePlex along with other fun things Les has done, for example: FileUpload Control, FlipPanel, Animation Extensions, etc., and also his CodeCamp material. As it turned out I only had one give-away with me, but that was worth probably close to everything I've given away so far: a Telerik Ultimate License graciously provided by Telerik: I also have a Sitefinity license to use on our site from Telerik, but I've been jammed up and haven't had the time to devote to getting it cooking. I included Les and Chris in my spreadsheet for randomly selecting swag awardees, and Chris ended up the winner... Being a presenter, a new graduate, and new job, I thought it was appropriate. Let's not forget our host, Interface Technical Training for taking the burden of providing a facility for us off my agenda. I've been to User Group meetings in many places, but the ITT facilities are the best, so thanks! Also thanks to everyone that came out... we had some new people and some regulars. I have a speaker for August but not July, so if you have something to present, send me an email. Thanks!

  • For Oracle's JD Edwards Customers--IT's Getting Better All The Time

    - by Oracle Accelerate for Midsize Companies
By Jim Lein, Programs Management Sr. Principal, Oracle Midsize Programs. The annual JD Edwards Oracle Profit Magazine Special Edition was released this week. Look for the print copy in your mailbox or access the online version here. I entered the software industry when I joined JD Edwards in 1999. The next six years were a wild roller coaster ride for employees, partners, and--most unfortunately--for many of our customers. (Not entirely my fault BTW). In this Special Edition, I immediately gravitated to Aaron Lazenby's interview with Lyle Ekdahl, Group VP and General Manager of Oracle JD Edwards, "Better All The Time".  I met Lyle in 2003 when he joined PeopleSoft to guide JD Edwards' CRM development. He dropped by my cube (it was a double-wide cube, mind you) to explain his strategy. It was an intense first impression. Passionate, competent, personable. From my discussions with partners and customers, it is clear that for Oracle's JD Edwards customers it is getting better all the time. Now I've got that darn Beatle's song stuck in my head...

  • Use a Free Utility to Create Multiple Virtual Desktops in Windows

    - by Lori Kaufman
If you’ve used Linux, you’re probably familiar with the virtual desktop feature. It provides a convenient way to organize programs and folders open on your desktop. You can switch among multiple desktops and have different programs and folders open on each one. However, virtual desktops is a feature missing in Windows. There are many third-party options for adding virtual desktops to Windows, including one called Dexpot, which we have covered previously. Dexpot is free, but only for private use. Companies, public institutions, non-profit organizations, and even freelancers and self-employed people must buy the program. We found another virtual desktop tool that is completely free for everyone to use, called mDesktop. It’s a lightweight, open source program that allows you to switch among multiple desktops using hot keys and specify open programs or folders to be active on all desktops. You can use mDesktop to group related programs or to work on different projects on separate desktops. mDesktop is portable and does not need to be installed. Simply extract the .zip file you downloaded (see the link at the end of this article) and double-click the mDesktop.exe file. • BPM 11g and Human Workflow Shadow Rows by Adam Desjardin

    - by JuergenKress
During the OFM Forum last week, there were a few discussions around the relationship between the Human Workflow (WF_TASK*) tables in the SOA_INFRA schema and BPMN processes.  It is important to know how these are related because it can have a performance impact.  We have seen this performance issue several times when BPMN processes are used to model high volume system integrations without knowing all of the implications of using BPMN in this pattern. Most people assume that BPMN instances and their related data are stored in the CUBE_*, DLV_*, and AUDIT_* tables in the same way that BPEL instances are stored, with additional data in the BPM_* tables as well.  The group of tables that is not usually considered though is the WF* tables that are used for Human Workflow.  The WFTASK table is used by all BPMN processes in order to support features such as process level comments and attachments, whether those features are currently used in the process or not. For a standard human task that is created from a BPMN process, the following data is stored in the WFTASK table: One row per human task that is created The COMPONENTTYPE = "Workflow" TASKDEFINITIONID = Human Task ID (partition/CompositeName!Version/TaskName) ACCESSKEY = NULL Read the complete article here. • CoffeeScript Test Framework

    - by Liam McLennan
Tonight the Brisbane Alt.NET group is doing a coding dojo. I am hoping to talk someone into pairing with me to solve the kata in CoffeeScript. CoffeeScript is an awesome language, half javascript, half ruby, that compiles to javascript. To assist with tonight’s dojo I wrote the following micro test framework for CoffeeScript: <html> <body> <div> <h2>Test Results:</h2> <p class='results' /> </div> <script src="http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.3.2/jquery.min.js" type="text/javascript"></script> <script type="text/coffeescript"> # super simple test framework test: { write: (s) -> $('.results').append(s + '<br/>') assert: (b, message...) -> test.write(if b then "pass" else "fail: " + message) tests: [] exec: () -> for t in test.tests test.write("<br/><b>$t.name</b>") t.func() } # add some tests test.tests.push { name: "First Test" func: () -> test.assert(true) } test.tests.push { name: "Another Test" func: () -> test.assert(false, "You loose") } # run them test.exec(test.tests) </script> <script type="text/javascript" src="coffee-script.js"></script> </body> </html> It’s not the prettiest, but as far as I know it is the only CoffeeScript test framework in existence. Of course, I could just use one of the javascript test frameworks but that would be no fun. To get this example to run you need the coffeescript compiler in the same directory as the page.

I’m excited to announce the launch of SonicAgile 2.0 which is a free Agile Project Management tool.  You can start using it right now (for free) by visiting the following address: http://sonicagile.com/ What’s special about SonicAgile?  SonicAgile supports a real-time backlog and kanban. When you make changes to the backlog or kanban then those changes appear on every browser in real-time. For example, if multiple people open the Kanban in their browser, and you move a card on the backlog from the To Do column to the Done column then the card moves in every browser in real-time. This makes SonicAgile a great tool to use with distributed teams. SonicAgile has all of the features that you need in an Agile Project Management tool including: Real-time Backlog – Prioritize all of your stories using drag-and-drop. Real-time Kanban – Move stories from To Do, In Progress, to Done Burndown Charts – Track the progress of your team as your work burns down over time. Iterations – Group work into iterations (sprints). Tasks – Break long stories into tasks. Acceptance Criteria – Create a checklist of requirements for a story to be done. Agile Estimation – Estimate the amount of work required to complete a story using Points, Shirt Sizes, or Coffee Cup sizes. Time-Tracking – Track how long it takes to complete each story and task. Roadmap – Do release planning by creating epics and organizing the epics into releases. Discussions – Discuss each story or epic by email. Watch the following video for a quick 3 minute introduction: http://sonicagile.com/ Read the following guide for a more in-depth overview of the features included in SonicAgile: http://sonicagile.com/guide-agile-project-management-using-sonicagile/ I’d love to hear your feedback!  Let me know what you think by posting a comment.

  • Wire Framing WP7 Apps With Cacoo

    - by Tim Murphy
While looking for a free alternative to Sketchflow I landed on the Cacoo web site.  Any developer who decides to use the free Visual Studio tools may find themselves doing the same search.  The base functionality of Cacoo is free although there are certain features that have fees attached to them such as extended stencils and templates. Cacoo doesn’t seem to have a template for WP7.  It does have templates for iOS and Android development so I started with the Android template and started modidfying it for WP7.  Funny thing is since Android has the same hardware vendors as Windows Phone the basic frame looks just right (I would swear I was looking at my Samsung Focus). Below is the start of a new mockup for the user group that I help run. I found that while Cacoo doesn’t have all the icons I need I am able to insert them from the Windows Phone Toolkit folder.  If I put them off to the side as you can see above.  I can simply copy and paste them into the appropriate place as needed.  Beyond that I have customized the main frame frame so I can have my base to work from.  In the future I intend to create this as a stencil and if it looks good enough I would consider making it public. My use of this product is still in it’s early phase, but it seems like a great way to start.  Maybe if you use this to get going you can earn enough from your resulting apps to pay for something with more bells and whistles in the future. del.icio.us Tags: WP7,Windows Phone 7 development, design,Cacoo, wire frame

  • Why doesn't Gradle include transitive dependencies in compile / runtime classpath?

    - by Francis Toth
I'm learning how Gradle works, and I can't understand how it resolves a project transitive dependencies. For now, I have two projects : projectA : which has a couple of dependencies on external libraries projectB : which has only one dependency on projectA No matter how I try, when I build projectB, gradle doesn't include any projectA dependencies (X and Y) in projectB's compile or runtime classpath. I've only managed to make it work by including projectA's dependencies in projectB's build script, which, in my opinion does not make any sense. These dependencies should be automatically attached to projectB. I'm pretty sure I'm missing something but I can't figure out what. I've read about "lib dependencies", but it seems to apply only to local projects like described here, not on external dependencies. Here is the build.gradle I use in the root project (the one that contains both projectA and projectB) : buildscript { repositories { mavenCentral() } dependencies { classpath 'com.android.tools.build:gradle:0.3' } } subprojects { apply plugin: 'java' apply plugin: 'idea' group = 'com.company' repositories { mavenCentral() add(new org.apache.ivy.plugins.resolver.SshResolver()) { name = 'customRepo' addIvyPattern "ssh://.../repository/[organization]/[module]/[revision]/[module].xml" addArtifactPattern "ssh://.../[organization]/[module]/[revision]/[module](-[classifier]).[ext]" } } sourceSets { main { java { srcDir 'src/' } } } idea.module { downloadSources = true } // task that create sources jar task sourceJar(type: Jar) { from sourceSets.main.java classifier 'sources' } // Publishing configuration uploadArchives { repositories { add project.repositories.customRepo } } artifacts { archives(sourceJar) { name "$name-sources" type 'source' builtBy sourceJar } } } This one concerns projectA only : version = '1.0' dependencies { compile 'com.company:X:1.0' compile 'com.company:B:1.0' } And this is the one used by projectB : version = '1.0' dependencies { compile ('com.company:projectA:1.0') { transitive = true } } Thank you in advance for any help, and please, apologize me for my bad English.

  • July, the 31 Days of SQL Server DMO’s – Day 31 (sys.dm_server_services)

    - by Tamarick Hill
The last DMV for this month long blog session is the sys.dm_server_services DMV. This DMV returns information about your SQL Server, Full-Text, and SQL Server Agent related services. To further illustrate the information this DMV contains, lets run it against our Training instance that we have been using for this blog series. SELECT * FROM sys.dm_server_services The first column returned by this DMV is the actual Service Name. The next columns are the startup_type and startup_type_desc columns which display your chosen method for how a particular method should be started. The next columns status and status_desc display the current status for each of your Services on the instance. The process_id column represents the server process id. The last_startup_time column gives you the last time that a particular service was started. The service_account column provides you with the name of the account that is used to control the service. The filename column gives you the full path to the executable for the service. Lastly we have the is_clustered column and the cluster_nodename which indicates whether or not a particular service is clustered and is part of a resource cluster group, and if so, the cluster node that the service is installed on. This is a good DMV to provide you with a quick snapshot view of the current SQL Server services you have on your instance. For more information on this DMV, please see the below Books Online link: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh204542.aspx Follow me on Twitter @PrimeTimeDBA

  • Drop and Give Me 20 Questions

    - by [email protected]
IOUG Sponsors Boot Camp at Collaborate 10 Feeling flabby and out of shape on topics such as virtualization, SQL development, and security? Want to beef up your skills on Oracle Database 11g Release 2, Oracle on Linux for IBM System z, and Oracle's maximum availability architecture on Linux for IBM System z? If so, it's time for boot camp. The Independent Oracle Users Group (IOUG) is sponsoring its first-ever boot camp for Oracle technology and database professionals at Collaborate 10, April 19 to 21. And yes, as with many boot camps, the IOUG programs will be in a harsh, desert environment--at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. The one- and two-day programs will cover Oracle technology and a variety of database topics, and they'll be taught by drill instructors, including industry experts as well as Oracle users and staff. You'll get in-depth training. But don't worry. You won't have to suffer through a bad haircut and 20-mile hikes. Are you ready? Was that a "yes, sir"? I can't hear you.
