• Fitts Law, applying it to touch screens

  Been reading a lot into UI design lately and Fitts Law keeps popping up. Now from what i gather its basically the larger an item is, and the closer it is to your cursor, the easier it is to click on. So what about touch screen devices where the input comes from multiple touches or just single touches. What are the fundamentals to take into account considering this? Should it be something like, the hands of the user are on the sides of the device so the buttons should be close to the left and right hand sides of the device? Thanks

• Domain migration - 301 Redirect of all contentes of directory)

  Hi, I would like to know if it is possible to do the following considering that I would like to migrate domains. I have lets say: one.com/files/one.html one.com/files/two.php one.com/other/three.html one.com/other/four.doc one.com/other/subdirectory/five.doc I am migrating to two.com So I would like to make RESPECTIVE 301 redirects to the following: two.com/old/files/one.html two.com/old/files/two.php two.com/old/other/three.html two.com/old/other/four.doc two.com/old/other/subdirectory/five.doc I've tried with cPanel and although I come "close" with the redirects option I can't seem to make it happen. The folders are not much (10 -12) the file are a lot, and obviously impossible to make it manually. How would you proceed? Can this/ should this be done with regex from the .htaccess?? Can you direct all the elements of a subdirectory in the manner expressed above? I hope the question is clear enough, if not please ask for any clarification needed!! Thanks in advance!!

• Why MSSQL keeps throwing me Exceptions?

  I have my project in .NET that uses a db in MSSQL Server,i'm using LINQ , sometimes when the projec throws me an exception (Constraint) in a part of the project this same error keeps showing in other part of the project when i do another thing with the db, like when i do an insertion and i had before an exception on delete the insertion throws me the delete exeption, and it remainds this way until i close and open again the project, my major problem is when this happen in my online project, this error in my project causes me problems in the project i'm testing online (i use the same db). I don't know if this exception is on the memory or something but its have been causing me a lot of headechs.

  Hi I have not worked so much with files: I am wondering about possible issues with accessing remote files on another computer. What if the distant application crashes and doesn't close the file ? My aim is to use this win32 function: HFILE WINAPI OpenFile(LPCSTR lpFileName, LPOFSTRUCT lpReOpenBuff, UINT uStyle); Using the flag OF_SHARE_EXCLUSIVE assures me that any concurrent access will be denied (because several machines are writing to this file from time to time). But what if the file is left open ? (application crash for example ?) How to put the file back to normal ?

What I would like to do is Open a excel file that is the XLTemplatePath and the either rename or save the file at the XLSaveReportPath and then use that renamed/saved file to fill the report out. I am using Visual Studio 2008 in VB.NET

• VS 2008 unstable after "Stop Debugging"

  This was on Windows Server 2003 X86, VSTS 9.0.30729.1 SP I used "Attach to process" to debug the program, but recently when I "Stop Debugging" by "shift + f5", I was prompted with an error saying "VS has an internal error and will be unstable". After that all the debug related menu items were disabled e.g. "Start debugging" and "attach to process" etc., even when I forcibly closed the program the situation remained, leaving me the only option to restart the solution. The only reason I can think of causing this is that I forcibly kill the process a lot, in order to able to rebuild it quickly, other than that I didn't do anything abnormal to VS. another sympton: when I tried to close the VS normally, I was prompted with "source file [] does not belong to the project being debugged" for all the files I opened inside of IDE, but the file does belong to the project. • Is there a security issue with using javascript cookies?

  Hey guys, another quick question for the experts. I have an alert box that displays updates processed in php to the user just like this site. I want to make it so that if the user closes the box, then it will not pop up for another 5 minutes (unless they check the messages then it will not pop up because the entries that cause the pop up are deleted in the database). On the close of the box I was thinking of giving the user a javascript cookie, since the alert box is done in javascript. I was wondering if this was a bad coding practice, since I am kind of unfamiliar with cookies and was warned against them before. If anyone has any advice or can recommend a better way, I would really appreciate it.

  Hi Guys, I'm using a open-source Python library in my project. This library logs a lot of information using the logging class. ...but I can't see the output or log it to file. I know that i would have to create a logger instance and add a file-handler or a console-handler to it but how can i pass this logger instance to the class?   Is there a possibility to write a GUI from inside a function? The Problem is: The callback of all GUI-functions work in the global workspace. But functions have their own workspace and can not access variables in the global workspace. • What is the impact/limitation of oracle select with large number of bind variables?

  We had our oracle server chocking during processing a select statement with close to 3500(!!) bind variables. This select is, obviously, build dynamically by code that we can't change. During the execution of this select the db server went to 100% cpu usage and our system almost halted. We know how to reproduce this problem. So we can prevent this specific condition. But I am wondering if there is a way to protect the db ( by configuration) from this type of problems.

• SSIS Custom Control Task Debugging UI in BIDS and VS

  I've created a SSIS Custom Task in C# and I'm currently developing the UI. I was wondering if there is a better way of debugging the UI instead of compiling the project, copying the DLL's into the appropriate DTS folder and then opening the test Package within BIDS and then attaching the process to Visual Studio. This part I'm not bothered about but once you've tested the UI and made changes to UI within Visual Studio. I've got to recomplile the DLL's and then repeat the entire process. I've got to close BIDS and VS because they don't release the DLL's before I have to start the entire process over again. Does anyone have any tips to speed up this process. It's just so frustrating having to do this everytime.

Do Work ... } } } } }); This code leads into an continuous growing number of handles in IE 8 (Windows 7 / verified with Task Manager & Process Explorer). Firefox & Chrome does not have this problem. This page is displayed all day long - this leads into thousands of handles & will sometimes crash the complete browser. My workaround is to reload the complete page every hour - but this can't be the solution ;-) Any suggestions how to "close" these Ajax-Handles? thx

Even all the dataadapter objects use the same SQLConnection, each Fill method will open and close the connection unless the connection state is already open before the method call. What I want to know is how does unnecessarily opening and closing SQLConnections affect the performance of the application. How much does it need to scale to see the bad effects of this problem (100,000s of concurrent users?). In a mid-size website (daily 50000 users) does it worth bothering and searching for all the Fill() calls, keeping them together in the code and opening the connection before any Fill() call and closing afterwards?

  Hello, I want to use the google maps hand cursor in Python but I don't know how to do it. I've downloaded the cursor but I only get to use the hand open, I also have a event that "closes" the hand when clicked but I don't know how can I change the style cursor on it. I say this because the google maps hand cursor has two style (the open and the closed hand). If you don't know how to use the other style you can also tell me how can I create another cursor where the close hand is the default style. If I have that, I only change the cursor and it's done.   I did find an answer to this title and I did do a little research but I'm still not getting the flow. Here is what I want to happen: 1) click a button on the presenter view to open a modal view. 2) retrieve some value and click a button to close the modal view....sending the value to the presentor view and execute a method. I get that this works like a callback but I still can't figure out where to put the callback stuff. So, how exactly do I do this? A) In the presentViewController completion block, should I include the presenter view method to execute when modal view is completed? Or: B) In the modal view's dismissViewControllerAnimated completion block, should I include the presenter view method to execute when modal view is completed? Can somebody help me with some sample code? Or at least help me get the flow of which block to put the code in? Thank you, P

  So, in facebook, I cannot call myFrame.window to get the iframe parent window. How can I do it? What I'm trying archieve is: I have a popup (div) that will load a iframe. And then in the iframe will have a button. Once people click the button inside the iframe, I want to close the popup(div). Normally, I need to get the parent window. Then I can destroy the popup div. But in facebook, how can I do it? any alternative way to do that? I don't want to refresh the page. :)

  Hi Quite frequently I have to explain things to Project Managers who sometimes want to know a little bit more about something, and sometimes I try and come up with some analogy that best explains it. Now, I can't really kick this off with a good analagy because mine usually suck, but I would be interested in yours, or some you've heard that have been used to simplify explanations. One analogy that does come up often is when explaining Interfaces (i.e. .Net) to which I usually explain in terms of a vehicle has a driver interface, and all vehicles must implement that interface so that anyone who can drive a vehicle will be able to utilise it. Any more? Would like to hear some, both serious and humourous. Please close if a duplicate.
