• What are good educational resources for setting up .Net Webservice on a DMZ connecting to SQL Server

  We are going to begin implementing a web service that will be hosted on a DMZ server. This web server will post data to a SQL server and we're trying to determine the best methodology to handle this. Things that concern us are web service authentication, SOAP, and whether or not to store the database on the DMZ or the local network. This same scenario will apply to ASP.Net apps. Trust me, I've already searched the web, but as usual, the online resources I've found either talk about just authentication, or just about SOAP, or etc, but does not show or suggest how the entire system can work together. Can you give me a list of resources such as links that I've missed, books, classes, or etc that would help? Thank You.

• Is frameworks really necessary for this problem?

  Hi Guys I'm creating an online music store application (in Java) for signed and unsigned artist for my client. I'm currently using Struts 1.3.10 (I was recommended Spring but Spring setup is sort of similar to Struts) for my Web application. My Database is currently a MySQL 5 (or higher) and I'm using a DAO pattern to talk to it. There are limitations to using Struts and DAO's (e.g. Multiple File upload in Struts is not implemented the same way as multiple String parameters, and for DAO's, there lacks a Publish-Subscribe feature). Is what I'm doing the best way forward or should I go straight Hibernate (or similar) and move out of Struts? What are the performance implications or technical issues that you've experienced with the same setup I have? The client doesn't care how I do it as long as it is done.

• How to make mysql accept connections externally

  I have a VPS and I want to make mysql DB accept connection externally (from my PC for instance). I have Debian Linux installed on the server. I checked some tutorials online and they said to comment out: bind-address = 127.0.0.1 But this didn't seem to help! is there anything specific for VPSs? or Am I missing something else? The command that runs mysql is: /usr/sbin/mysqld --basedir=/usr --datadir=/var/lib/mysql --user=mysql --pid-file=/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.pid --skip-external-locking --port=3306 --socket=/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock

• Retail knowledge inference

  So i am doing a research on how can i infer knowledge from reports (not with a specific format), but after pre processing, i should have some kind of formatted data. A fairly basic inference would be: "Retailer has X stock." and "X is sellable." - "Retailer sells X" the knowledge i focus is retail domain oriented, and if possible i should improve its efficiency with each iteration. Is this scifi(some of my friends think it is)? The related stuff i find online are "expert systems" that find anomalies, fuzzy inference systems and some rants about "easy knowledge". • Can I void all JavaScript calls to $

  I need some scripts inside an existing site's scripts.js. This site has been online for ages, and I can not touch the scripts file. I am including it standardly in another page. There are numerous jQuery calls in the scripts file. The place I include it does not have jQuery. I want to void all $() type things. I tried this... $ = function() { }; before I included scripts.js and it didn't seem to work. I am still getting errors like $(document) is undefined Is there a way to void all these jQuery calls?   Is RDF still used widely for content syndication? Specifically, I know only of Slashdot as a large scale website syndicating content in that format (say versus RSS). Understandably this might seem vague to answer so more specifically: Can anyone list any larger sites similar in scale to Amazon or CNN using it? Any web based publishing platforms (Wordpress, Joomla, etc...) that generate syndication feeds with this xml vocabulary. Any other more quantifiable evidence that it is used for syndication online.   Hi, I want to set up source control for my project, but it seems like I need a server for this. I've never done this before, and I couldn't find anything helpfull yet. Is there any way to host a server locally so Visual studio can use it? Or do you know any online (free) servers I can use? By the way, if source control is not actually what i should use for keeping track of changes in my files, please suggest a better option. Thanks in advance.

• How to include simple collections in ConfigurationSection

  Is there a way for me to include a simple array of strings, or List<string> on my custom subclass of ConfigurationSection? (Or an array or generic list of simple data objects, for that matter?) I'm becoming familiar with the new (and VERY verbose) ConfigurationSection, ConfigurationElement, and ConfigurationElementCollection classes, but I'm by no means an expert yet. It seems like ConfigurationSection should handle simple collections/lists on its own, without me having to create a custom ConfigurationElementCollection subclass for each and every one. But I haven't found any reference to this ability online.

• is jQuery 1.4.2 compatible with Closure Compiler?

  According to the official release statement version 1.4 has been re-written to be compressed with Closure Compiler yet when I use the online version of closure compiler I get 130 warnings. This is the code I use. // ==ClosureCompiler== // @compilation_level ADVANCED_OPTIMIZATIONS // @output_file_name default.js // @code_url http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.4.2/jquery.js // ==/ClosureCompiler== And as far as I know you get the real benefit of Closure Compiler if you include the library with your code also, so it removes the unused functions. Yet my testing show that I can't get any further than compressing the library itself.. What am I doing wrong? Any kind of insight will be much appreciated.

• How to safely purge in Varnish if backend is sick without losing content

  If the backend is sick, what is the preferable way to ensure that stale content can be retrieved from the backend when a PURGE request is made? When a PURGE request is made, whether or not the backend is sick, by default the content will be eliminated from the Varnish cache and if the backend is down, a 503 page would be served to the user until the backend comes back online to serve a new version of the content. I'd like to be able to at least serve up a stale version of the content if a new version could not be retrieved from the backend. Is this possible without installing the Softpurge Varnish Mod?

  I am just looking into using HTML Purifier to ensure that a user-inputed string (that represents the name of a person) is sanitized. I do not want to allow any html tags, script, markup etc - I just want the alpha, numeric and normal punctuation characters. The sheer number of options available for HTML Purifier is daunting and, as far as i can see, the docs do not seem to have a beggining/middle or end see: http://htmlpurifier.org/docs Is there a simple hello world tutorial online that shows how to sanitize a string removing all the bad stuff out of it. • ssh-keygen accepting stdin

  I am trying to call ssh-keygen using a variable through bash as an input instead of a file to get a fingerprint of a public key. This method does not work as it says the key file is invalid (it's correct for sure) echo $pubkey | ssh-keygen -lf /dev/stdin This does work ssh-keygen -lf /dev/stdin < alpha.pub This does not work because I get an ambiguous redirect ssh-keygen -lf /dev/stdin < $(echo $pubkey) I would appreciate some insight as to how to get ssh-keygen to read from a variable with a public key and if possible, an explanation as to why the redirects aren't doing what I think they should be doing. I searched online but many of the redirect tutorials didn't seem to answer my questions.

  Hi folks, This is the follow-up question from this general page load speed question. This question which will focus only, entirely and specifically on the thumbnail generator PHP code with the question: What's causing the 97% delays on these tiny thumbnails? Measuring only 3 ~ 5 kb each, this is strange indeed! Even after 7 orso bounty-rounds and 100 upvotes, the images are still doing nothing for over 97% of the time. It works allright, but it could be so much faster! ZAM, my pet robot, was so annoyed by not knowing why, he just pulled out some cords! Silly metal box... (I have asked permission from the original author, to put temporarily segments of the code online that I think could be the problem, after which I will remove all code, except the several lines that were the direct cause of this issue here to match the answer. This will be the free opportunity to perfect/speedup his otherwise already to my opinion vert versatile and userfriendly thumbnail generator.)

• A realistic and usable (VS2010) MVC2 project template?

  Hello. everybody. The default MVC2 web project template which VS2010 creates when you select "ASP.NET MVC2 Web Application" is quite a nice start... but nowhere near a realistic app framework. E.G.: user accounts without such features as password recover easily customizabile (and maybe multilingual) error messages an interface to manage users, such a searcheable user list, user edit and so on which an admin can use and these are just the beginning of the usual, mandatory basic features a web site of any size may use. Searching through the online projects templates doesn't seem to help, ehiter. Are there any project template sites or else that you are aware of, that gives such features? thanks a lot!

  hello. im working on a online game. i got some problems with inserting new data to table. im getting 2010-4-8 2:14, *** 37000, 513, [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]A column insert or update conflicts with a rule imposed by a previous CREATE RULE statement. The statement was terminated. The conflict occurred in database 'KN_online', table 'ACCOUNT_CHAR', column 'strAccountID'., 261 NationSelect*** this error in logs. what does this means? how can i fix this? i've tried to delete RULE for my DB but I'm unable to delete RULE. im getting the rule 'dbo.unallowedchars' cannot be dropped because it is bounded to one or more clumn. I set all permissions right but its still not working.. thanks..

  I have a database on line with Godaddy (who uses SQL Server 2005). They provide basic management tools, but tell you that for more advanced tools you can connect directly using SSMS. I followed their instructions to ensure my online database will accept remote connections, and can apparently log in using SSMS with success (after giving my hostname and access data).   I am new to git and recently set up a new account with github. I'm following a rails tutorial from Michael Hartl online ( http://www.railstutorial.org/book#fig:github_first_page ) and followed his instructions to set up my git which were also inline with the setup instructions at github. Anyways, the "Next Steps" section on github were: mkdir sample_app cd sample_app git init touch README git add README git commit -m 'first commit' git remote add origin [email protected]:rosdabos55/sample_app.git git push origin master I got all the way to the last instruction (git push origin master) without any problem. When I entered that last line into my terminal, however, I got this error message: "fatal: No path specified. See 'man git-pull' for valid url syntax." What might I be doing wrong?

• What *collaborative* wireframing / UI mockup tools are out there?

  I'm looking for something that applies the collaboration focus (one location/URL, always up-to-date, multi-person online read/write access anywhere) of google docs / google spreadsheets to wireframing. Bonus points if, like Google Docs, it needs only a browser yet also works offline. More bonus points if it supports automatic revisions. Even more bonus points if you can hand out login-less 'invitation' URLs like Flickr does, instead of forcing people into signing up for accounts or using their home accounts. To start off, there's one called iPlotz, but it didn't enchant me -- ironically, mostly because of its akward UI, which can't hold a candle to omnigraffle (don't let that prevent you from giving it a try though). And no, paper prototyping, wonderful as it is, does not qualify: it does not combine being instantly globally shareable & editable very well :-)

• How to do a true Java ping from Windows?

  I have a device on a network that I am attempting to ping through my Java program. Through my windows command prompt, I can ping the device address fine and do a tracert on the address fine. Online, I have seen that in order to do a ping through Java you have to do the following: InetAddress.getByName(address).isReachable(timeout); But, when I use this code on my device address, it always returns false in my program. I am using the correct IPv4 address with a good timeout value. Also, if I use a localhost address, it works fine. Why can I ping the device through cmd, but not through my program? I have heard in various places that this is not a true ping. Is there a better way to emulate a ping in Java? Thanks

This app features a way to connect your webcam or dv cam that is connected on the internet, you could set up the ip address and enter the data on the app and it will connect to your online camera. the thing is that they have the video stream and it looks like they embedded the video in a uiview or webview at the bottom they have buttons to choose from all the cameras you have set up. so this is different from other video streaming apps because it does not play the video from the full screen mode (MPMediaPlayer API) would there be any tutorials about this or somehow take reverse engineer this?

• Are there such things as Email Hooks?

  After hearing about git commit hooks, I was thinking maybe there are such things as email hooks... Is it possible for me to build a program that says "hey, you just received an email, now run this ruby script"? Something like a GMail Web Hook. Is there anything out there like that? I mean I could build a cron thing that checked my email all the time, but maybe there's a more formal way. Looking for an online email system to do this with, not say my Mac Mail.
