• How to read a Text File Hidden Characters?

  Hi guys, I've created a text file from an application that I developed. When I send the text file to a SYSTEM Validation, they (3rd Party System) say that the file is invalid and that the file contains 3 characters in the beginning of the file that are not allowed as well special characters are not correct. They also say I need to use either ISO 8859-1 or PC850 Well, I'm using NotePad++ and I can't see that at all! What is the best text file reader for this kinda problems? EDITED I also have a MAC and just a thought I remembered opening in TextMate ... WOW! Now I know what they are talking about! How can I have the same in Windows?

• How Can I Install LibreOffice Base?

  Useful info: I have tried running sudo dpkg --configure -a and sudo apt-get install -f with no result. I am running Kubuntu 11.10 (the updater is far too unreliable to ever be trusted with performing a version upgrade) The rest of LibreOffice seems to work fine (apart from an annoying bug where tooltips are shown as black text on black background...) I have need to use LibreOffice Base to complete a mail merge document. However, I noticed it's not installed. • Macbook Pro suddenly lagging video playback + Flash sites

  I have a Macbook Pro, OSx Lion, Intel Core2 Duo, 4GB Ram, NVidia Geforce 8600M GT 128 MB Ram, Intel x25m SSD. Approximately 4 years old. I've been running Flash sites and playing videos without any problems for years. Then suddenly 3 months ago, a flash site like http://thefwa.com is lagging in all browsers. Even mouseover animations - anything. Also video playback in e.g VLC and Quicktime is now lagging. Same videos I used before, I tried installing an older version of VLC without any luck. Playing back video in VLC utilizes the CPU almost 100%, and Flash sites like thefwa.com easily takes up 50-60%. It's as if the hardware acceleration stopped working, or the GPU lost its magic. UPDATE: Same issues also occurred on Snow Leopard Has anyone experienced something similar, or do you know what might be wrong?

  Is there any way for me to use Windows 8 in a dark environment? For a long time I had headaches that I couldn't fid their cause. Now, I'm using a dark visual style for my Windows 7 and since then, I haven't have any problems. Now I want to use Windows 8 release preview but I cannot find any way to use it in a dark theme/visual style. I've seen the files needed are patched but couldn't find any visual style. • Second Monitor Gets Bright, and then Blank.

  I recently added a second LCD monitor to my home-computer. It was working fine for the first couple of days, but then it started having problems. Every 10-20 minutes it would get really bright, and then instantly go black. The power was still connected, so it wasn't turned off. If I turned the power off for a few minutes, I could turn it back on and get another 10-20 minutes of work done before it would happen again. What could cause this behavior?

• Static objects and concurrency in a web application

  I'm developing small Java Web Applications on Tomcat server and I'm using MySQL as my database. Up until now I was using a connection singleton for accessing the database but I found out that this will ensure just on connection per Application and there will be problems if multiple users want to access the database in the same time. (They all have to make us of that single Connection object). I created a Connection Pool and I hope that this is the correct way of doing things. Furthermore it seems that I developed the bad habit of creating a lot of static object and static methods (mainly because I was under the wrong impression that every static object will be duplicated for every client which accesses my application). Because of this all the Service Classes ( classes used to handle database data) are static and distributed through a ServiceFactory: public class ServiceFactory { private static final String JDBC = "JDBC"; private static String impl; private static AccountService accountService; private static BoardService boardService; public static AccountService getAccountService(){ initConfig(); if (accountService == null){ if (impl.equalsIgnoreCase(JDBC)){ accountService = new JDBCAccountService(); } } return accountService; } public static BoardService getBoardService(){ initConfig(); if (boardService == null){ if (impl.equalsIgnoreCase(JDBC)){ boardService = new JDBCBoardService(); } } return boardService; } private static void initConfig(){ if (StringUtil.isEmpty(impl)){ impl = ConfigUtil.getProperty("service.implementation"); // If the config failed initialize with standard if (StringUtil.isEmpty(impl)){ impl = JDBC; } } } This was the factory class which, as you can see, allows just one Service to exist at any time. Now, is this a bad practice? What happens if let's say 1k users access AccountService simultaneously? I know that all this questions and bad practices come from a bad understanding of the static attribute in a web application and the way the server handles this attributes. • Computer shutsdowns when trying to boot

  I have an IBM ThinkCentre, and I was talking to someone on Skype when it suddenly just shutoff. When I rebooted it asked me to start windows normally or in safe mode, but as soon I choose an option (Any of them) it shuts back down. So I thought it was a problem with windows and tired booting from a Hirens disk, but same thing. I've been using this computer without problems for over a year know. Any idea's for me to try? Unfortunatly I don't have any powersupplies or extra RAM to switch out to try anything like that. EDIT I left it off for a while and it's booting to windows now. I would still like to know what might have been causing it to do that if you have any ideas.

• Have you changed your coding style recently? It wasn't hard wasn't it?

  I've used to write code in C-like languages using the Allman style, regarding the position of braces. void foo(int bar) { if(bar) { //... } else return; //... } Now the last two years I have been working mostly in JavaScript and when we adopted jslint as part of our QA process, I had to adopt to the Crockford way of doing things. So I had to change the coding style into: function foo(bar) { if (bar) { //... } else { return; } //... } Now apart from comparing a C/C++ example with JavaScript, I must say that my JavaScript-Crockford-coding style now has spread into my C/C++/Java coding when I revise old projects and work on code in those languages that for example has no problem with single line statements or ambiguous newline insertion. I used to consider the later format very awkward, I have never had any problems with adapting my coding style to the one chosen by my predecessors, except for when I was a Junior developer mostly being the solve developer on legacy projects and the first thing I did was to change the indenting style. But now after a couple of months I consider the Allman style a little bit too spacious and feel more comfortable with the K&R-like style. Have you changed your coding style during your career?

• Aging vs. Coding Skills

  A little background, since it can be part of my point fo view. I'm a C#/Java programmer with age of 23, coding since my 18's. I started studying C and working with Cobol, and after 1 year I quickly moved to C#/Java Web Development, and have worked with it in about 3/4 companies. (I've just moved again) In my (brief) professional career I encountered some older programmers, all the times it was very hard to work with them, since I was way better programmer than they. And it is not about just the language skills, some of them had seriously problems understanding basic logic. Now I wonder how theese programmer get jobs on the market since (I imagine) they have more expenses, and thus have to make more money, and are really counter-productives. In theese examples, others project member have to constantly keep stoping for helping them out. All the times, they eventually quit... So I wonder... May the aging process slow down the learning rate and logic thinking? Does the programmer has to, or at least should, move to a management area before getting old? Please, my intention is not to be disrespectful with older persons. I am fully aware that this is NOT the case of all older programmers, I often see around very good old programmers on the net, I just never met them for close.

• Xenserver boot error

  I'm trying to get Xenserver 5.5 running on a spare computer here, hardware specs: Intel Q6600, 4GB Ram, and Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R motherboard Xenserver itself installs fine onto a 150GB sata hdd, however it fails to boot whatsoever, giving this garbled mess: http://img697.imageshack.us/img697/9918/biosi.jpg it's not frozen because if I press enter it just prints a different garble and it also says "could not find kernel image". The strangest thing is if I put that hdd in my desktop and assign it to a VMWare desktop vm (under the ESX profile no less) it boots perfectly... leading me to believe there are no problems with the install or the hdd itself. From what I can tell the error seems to be occuring completely seperately to Xenserver, in the bootloader extlinux?. If there was a motherboard compatibility issue I would think it would also have manifested during installation, and the fact the problem seems to be with the booting into Xen makes me doubt this. Any ideas guys? (I'm using Xen because it can do PCI passthrough without VT-d.)

• eSata plugged into Sata socket via adaptor cable very slow

  Why would an external eSata Drive (xSonic with 500Gb notebook Hard Drive) run ok on a Silicon Image based PCI-E to eSata adaptor at about 35MB/s, But then run really slow when plugged into NForce4 Sata socket via cable? I have another version of the problem with Really slow 1MB/s!!! performance on a ASUS P5K Pro Motherboard with E8400 CPU. This time the same card is plugged into a PCI-E socket. The same eSata drive is plugged into the Esata port on the card. All this is running on Windows XP Pro 32bit. Any suggestions on how to diagnose the problems??

• Windows 7 MSDN version

  I recently purchased a copy of Windows 7 online. Upon trying to install, it stopped and I was told that it could not find a 64 bit driver for my CD/DVD and I could not finish install. I contacted Microsoft and was told that this was something called an MSDN version according to the product key and that was the reason for the problem. They also said is was illegal to sell it to me. The company I bought it from never returned my calls or emails and luckily I got money back through Amazon. Amazon didn't even want me to send it back. Anyway my question is, is there anyway to load this onto my system and will I have problems or should I just throw it out? Any help would be great. Thanks

• Im getting the "Console Window Host has stopped working" popup in a few places.

  Im running Windows 7 on a 17 inch Macbook Pro, late 2011. Last Saturday I opened my laptop(It was either asleep or shutdown before hand) and suddenly had a whole bunch of problem. First off I got a few of pop-errors, my macbook was out of battery. I also had problems with my trackpad(no scrolling or right-click), which I fixed by reinstalling bootcamp. Now a days when ever I run cmd I get the popup Console Window Host has stopped working If I chose the Close the program I get another popup The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000142) Click OK to close the application. This doesnt happen just with cmd if un/install a program I get similar popups(first one). And in some other case like in visual studio when i was working on class work.

• SMTP Server Times Out for 1 of 2 ISPs

  For months I've been using a 5g sprint card for my laptop to check email. I have gmail, and three other accounts all configured in Thunderbird. Recently, I got AT&T internet service at my house and I discovered that I cannot send email when connected to my home service. I can receive just fine, but I can't send. If I plugin my 5g card, I can sent/receive with no problems. At home I'm connected wirelessly through a router. What could be causing this interruption? I even tried pinging my smtp server only to see it timeout when connected via AT&T. If more details are needed, I'll be happy to share.

• ubuntu one not syncing

  I am really starting to despair as I have been trying ubuntu one for several months, trying it on several machines, and it has caused me loads of different issues wasting me a lot of time. It is not straight forward to use, it should be a piece of software that runs in background and users should not think about checking all the time if it is really doing it's job. Of course I have been searching around this website and other forums but couldn't find an answer to my situation. Yesterday I had several problems with the client not syncing and using a lot of the machine's RAM, up and CPU. I had to reboot on several occasions and leave the office's PC on overnight in order to sync a few files of not more than a few MB. Today I am experiencing another problem: I have decided to do a test putting a small file in my ubuntu one shared folder. Ubuntu one is not detecting it (now already more than an hour), therefore not uploading it to the server. martin@ubuntu-desktop:~$ u1sdtool --status State: QUEUE_MANAGER connection: With User With Network description: processing the commands pool is_connected: True is_error: False is_online: True queues: IDLE and martin@ubuntu-desktop:~$ u1sdtool --current-transfers Current uploads: 0 Current downloads: 0 I am running Ubuntu 11.04 64 with all recent updates. On my other machine the transfer of files seems to be completely frozen, with around 10 files in the queue but no transfer whatsoever. Another curious issue is on my Ubuntu 10.10 laptop where ubuntu one seems to have completly disappeared from Nautilus context menu, folder/file sync status icons missing. • Ubuntu backlight problem with Nvidia graphics

  I have a laptop mySN QMG6 / Chiligreen Mobilitas NW which is Quanta TW9 barebone with intel i3 and nvidia 335m GT onboard. On ubuntu distros 10.04, 10.10, 11.04 and 11.10 i had problem with changing screen backlight with nouveau and nvidia drivers. FN+F4/F5 buttons did not change my brightness. I tried to edit xorg.conf, adding Option “RegistryDwords” “EnableBrightnessControl=1? Also tried to add some lines to grug acpi_osi="Linux" acpi_backlight=vendor Neither worked for me. Today I installed Ubuntu 12.04 beta2 and... With nouveau driver my FN key works, and changes the brightness (is it a new 3.0.22 linux kernel, or patched nouveau driver, i don't know). This is a big step forward. But, when installing proprietary nvidia driver (295.33) FN button stops working and i can't change brightness. I also tried workaround with xorg and grub with no result. Tried to install acpi from apt - no result. Is there anything left to try? I really need that nvidia driver working with FN keys, as i would like to have a working 3D acceleration. P.S. Does the nouveau driver has 3d acceleration like nvidia drivers??? If there is need to provide some log data, please write what should i print, as i'm a bit new to Ubuntu. P.P.S. Same problems i had with other Linux distros (Mint, Fedora and others) P.P.P.S. Other FN buttons work with both drivers (Mute, VOL UP/DOWN, WiFi on/off, Bluetooth, Sleep, Start/Pause, Stop, Next/Prev song)

• Can one have multiple name servers that don't all belong to the same TLD/provider?

  In light of the GoDaddy outage we updated our name server list for our domain to include an additional name server provider. The list looks something like this: ns61.domaincontrol.com ns54.domaincontrol.com ns1.dreamhost.com ns2.dreamhost.com Both Godaddy and Dreamhost have zone entries to handle the A and MX records. The idea is that if one provider goes out the other will be a fall-back. However, when I tested my config with http://www.intodns.com/ I am getting a warning about SOA serials not being agreed. Have I misunderstood some fundamentals in name-server config? What can I do to prevent future problems?

  I know that you can use SysPrep and ImageX to create a prepared image that can be used on several systems but the question is. How well does it work in a corporate environment of moving machines from old hardware off to new harddrives and new hardware? EDIT: The system runs accounting software and databases. So would SysPrep remove all License keys and other information which means would cause problems right? Would something else be a better option even though there are heavy costs involved? Currently, when I clone/copy the drive, Windows will black screen on me. So I need something with differential hardware support?

  Hi, I tried installing mysql a couple of times and I'm having problems. First of all, when I install it gives me a message that it's setting up and it just hangs. I can't ctl + c out of it, so I reboot the server and try to log into the db with sudo mysql -u root -p I enter my password and then get ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2) I restart the server: sudo /etc/init.d/mysql start Rather than invoking init scripts through /etc/init.d, use the service(8) utility, e.g. service mysql start Since the script you are attempting to invoke has been converted to an Upstart job, you may also use the start(8) utility, e.g. start mysql ~$ I try this: aptitude search mysql | grep ^i i A libdbd-mysql-perl - Perl5 database interface to the MySQL data i libmysql-java - Java database (JDBC) driver for MySQL i A libmysqlclient16 - MySQL database client library i mysql-client-5.1 - MySQL database client binaries i A mysql-client-core-5.1 - MySQL database core client binaries i mysql-common - MySQL database common files, e.g. /etc/mys i mysql-embedded - MySQL - embedded library i mysql-server-core-5.1 - MySQL database server binaries When I navigate to the folder to see if the *.sock file exists: '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' it does not.   The sys.dm_tran_locks DMV is used to return active lock resources on your server. Locking is a mechanism used by SQL Server to protect the integrity of data when you have multiple users that may potentially access the same data at the same time. Let’s run a query against this DMV so we can analyze the results. SELECT * FROM sys.dm_tran_locks As we can see, its a lot of lock information returned from this DMV. I will not go into detail about each of the columns returned, but I will touch on the ones that I feel are the most important. The first column in the output is the resource_type column which tells you the type of lock a particular row represents. It could be a PAGE lock, RID, OBJECT, DATABASE, or several other lock types. The resource_database_id represents the id of the database for a particular lock resource. The resource_lock_partition column represents the ID of a lock partition. When you have a table that is partitioned, locks can be escalated to the partition level before going to a table level lock. The request_mode column gives us information about the type of lock that is being requested. From the screenshots above we see RangeS-S locks which represent a share range lock and IS locks which represent Intent Shared locks. The request_status column displays whether the lock has been granted or whether the lock is waiting to be acquired. The request_session_id  shows the session_id that is requesting the lock. This DMV is the best place to go when you need to identify the exact locks that are being held or pending for individual requests. You might need this information when you are troubleshooting severe blocking or deadlocking problems on your server. • Filtering junk mail in Outlook 2007

  I keep getting mail which I try to filter as junk. Problem is, it is sent from my e-mail address while writing that the name of the sender is "Viagra yada yada yada ([email protected])" I can't add a rule to outlook according to sender's name, right? Is there any other way I can filter those e-mails (I can't add a rule to junk-mail my own e-mail address). The subject of the e-mails keeps changing in the following formats: "Faruz 76% discount now!" "Faruz 80% discount now!" "Now! 78% discount Faruz" (They seem to have infinite ideas of saying the same thing... :) ) So I also seem to have problems filtering according to subject. ideas?

• Reasons why mod_jk wouldn't work and how to trace them

  I've been using one server, then I reinstalled everything on another server, and the mod_jk stopped working. Here is the situation: apache 2.0 sitting "in front" mod_jk used to connect to the apache to tomcat tomcat 6.0.26 used to server the actual requests I followed this tutorial. The result is: accessing http://mysite.com opens the index.html in /var/www/ accessing http://mysite.com:8080/ works OK the logs at /var/logs/apache2 show everything is OK: [Mon Mar 29 22:01:53.310 2010] [28349:3075389184] [info] init_jk::mod_jk.c (2830): mod_jk/1.2.26 initialized [Mon Mar 29 22:01:53 2010] [warn] No JkShmFile defined in httpd.conf. Using default /var/log/apache2/jk-runtime-status [Mon Mar 29 22:01:53 2010] [notice] Apache/2.2.9 (Debian) mod_jk/1.2.26 configured -- resuming normal operations I compared the server.xml, jk.conf, sites-enabled/mysite from the new server to those from the old one and they are identical. The domain name is the same (I updated the DNS record today, and it has refreshed successfully) So the question is, what can go wrong? Is there another place where problems would be logged, if such occur?

• Ubuntu Server on Proliant ML350 G4

  Hi Everyone, I have been given the task to change OS of a HP Proliant ML350 G4 server, and I decided to use Ubuntu server edition for that matter. The thing is that the server has already installed Windows server 2000 on the only Hard drive it has (SCSI). My question is, could I install an IDE HD on the IDE connection it has and install ubuntu without overwritting the boot configuration, so if I wanted to go back to the windows 2000 server installation with no problems? It also has a tape drive which is used for backups. Do you guys know how buntu deals with such devices? Thanks for your time
