• SAB BizTalk Archiving Pipeline Component - Codeplex

  In an effort to give a little more to the BizTalk development community, I have created my first Codeplex project. The SAB BizTalk Archiving Pipeline Component was written using Visual Studio 2010 with BizTalk Server 2010 intended as the target platform.  It is currently at version 0.1, meaning that I have not yet completed all the intended functionality and have so far carried out a limited number of tests.  It does however archive files within the bounds of the functionailty so far implemented and seems to be stable in use. It is based on a recent evolution of a basic archiving component that I wrote in the past, and it is my hope that it will continue to evolve in the coming months. This work was inspired by some old posts by Gilles Zunino and Jeff Lynch.   You can download the documentation, source code or component dll from Codeplex, but to give you a taste here is the first section of the documentation to whet your appetite: SAB BizTalk Archiving Pipeline Component   The SAB BizTalk Archiving Pipeline Component has been developed to allow custom piplelines to be created that can archive messages at any stage of pipeline processing.   It works in both receive and send pipelines and will archive messages to file based on the configuration applied to the component in the BizTalk Administration Console.   The Archiving Pipeline Component has been coded for use with BizTalk Server 2010. Use with other versions of BizTalk has not been tested.   The Archiving Pipeline component is supplied as a dll file that should be placed in the BizTalk Server Pipeline Components folder. It can then be used when developing custom pipelines to be deployed as a part of your BizTalk Server applications.   This version of the component allows you to use a number of generic messaging macros and also a small number that are specific to the FILE adapter. It is intended to extend these macros to cover context properties from other adapters in future releases.     Archive Pipeline Parameters As with all pipeline components, the following parameters can be set when creating your custom pipeline and at runtime via the administration console.   Enabled:              Enables and disables the archive process.                                 True; messages will be archived.   False; messages will be passed to the next stage in the pipeline without performing any processing.   File Name:          The file name of the archived message.   Allows the component to build the archive filename at run-time; based on the values entered, the permitted macros and data extracted from the message context properties.   e.g.        %FileReceivedFileName%-%InterchangeSequenceNumber%   File Mask:           The extension to be added to the File Name following all Macro processing.   e.g.        .xml   File Path:             The path on which the archived message should be saved.   Allows the component to build the archive directory at run-time; based on the values entered, permitted macros and data extracted from the message context properties.   e.g.        C:\Archive\%ReceivePortName%\%Year%\%Month%\%Day%\                   \\ArchiveShare\%ReceivePortName%\%Date%\     Overwrite:          Enables and disables existing file overwrites.   True; any existing file with the same File Path/Name combination (following macro replacement) will be overwritten.   False; any existing file with the same File Path/Name combination (following macro replacement) will not be overwritten.  The current message will be archived with a GUID appended to the File Name.

• DAC pack up all your troubles

  Visual Studio 2010, or perhaps its apparently-forthcoming sister, "SQL Studio", is being geared up to become the natural way for developers to create databases. Central to this drive is the introduction of 'data-tier application components', or DACs. Applications are developed as normal but when it comes to deployment, instead of supplying the DBA with a bunch of scripts to create the required database objects, the developer creates a single DAC Package ("DAC Pack"); a zipped XML file containing all the database objects needed by the application, along with versioning information, policies for deployment, and so on. It's an intriguing prospect. Developers can work on their development database using their existing tools and source control, and then package up the changes into a single DACPAC for deployment and management. DBAs get an "application level view" of how their instances are being used and the ability to collectively, rather than individually, manage the objects. The DBA needing to manage a large number of relatively small databases can use "DAC snapshots" to get a quick overview of what has changed across all the databases they manage. The reason that DAC packs haven't caused more excitement is that they can only be pushed to SQL Server 2008 R2, and they must be developed or inspected using Visual Studio 2010. Furthermore, what we see right now in VS2010 is more of a 'work-in-progress' or 'vision of the future', with serious shortcomings and restrictions that render it unsuitable for anything but small 'non-critical' departmental databases. The first problem is that DAC packs support a limited set of schema objects (corresponding closely to the features available on 'Azure'). This means that Service Broker queues, CLR Objects, and perhaps most critically security (permissions, certificates etc.), are off-limits. Applications that require these objects will need to add them via a post-deployment TSQL script, rather defeating the whole idea. More worrying still is the process for altering a database with a DAC pack. The grand 'collective' philosophy, whereby a single XML file can be used for deploying and managing builds and changes, extends, unfortunately, to database upgrades. Any change to a database object will result in the creation of a new database, copying the data from the old version, nuking the previous one, and then renaming the new one. Simple eh? The problem is that even something as trivial as adding a comment to a stored procedure in a 5GB database will require the server to find at least twice as much space, as well sufficient elbow-room in the transaction log for copying the largest table. Of course, you'll need to take the database offline for the full course of the deployment, which is likely to take a long time if there is a lot of data. This upgrade/rename process breaks the log chain, makes any subsequent full restore operation highly complicated, and will also break log shipping. As with any grand vision, the devil is always in the detail. It's hard to fathom why Microsoft hasn't used a SQL Compare-style approach to the upgrade process, altering a database with a change script, and this will surely be adopted in the near future. Something had to be in place for VS2010, but right now DAC packs only make sense for Azure. For this, they're cute, but hardly compelling. Nevertheless, DBAs would do well to get familiar with VS 2010 and DAC packs. Like it or not, they're both coming. Cheers, Tony.

Begin by downloading the trial version and running the program. After everything is installed then you will see the following screen: After it is installed, you may want to take a look at your Toolbox in Visual Studio 2010. After you add the controls from the “Choose Items” in Silverlight and you will see that you now have access to all of these controls. At this point, to use the controls it’s as simple as drag/drop onto your Silverlight container. It will create the proper Namespaces for you. It’s hard to show with a static screenshot just how powerful the controls actually are so I will refer you to the demo page to learn more about them. Since all of these are animations/effects it just doesn’t work with a static screenshot. It is worth noting that the Sfx pack really focuses on the following core effects: I will show you the best route to get started building a new project with them below. The best page to start is the sample browser which you can access by going to SvFx Launcher. In my case, I want to build a new Carousel. I simple navigate to the Carousel that I want to build and hit the “Cs” code at the top. This launches Visual Studio 2010 and now I can copy/paste the XAML into my project. • T-SQL: Compute Subtotals For A Range Of Rows

  MSSQL 2008. I am trying to construct a SQL statement which returns the total of column B for all rows where column A is between 2 known ranges. The range is a sliding window, and should be recomputed as it might be using a loop. Here is an example of what I'm trying to do, much simplified from my actual problem. Suppose I have this data: table: Test Year Sales ----------- ----------- 2000 200 2001 200 2002 200 2003 200 2004 200 2005 200 2006 200 2007 200 2008 200 2009 200 2010 200 2011 200 2012 200 2013 200 2014 200 2015 200 2016 200 2017 200 2018 200 2019 200 I want to construct a query which returns 1 row for every decade in the above table, like this: Desired Results: DecadeEnd TotalSales --------- ---------- 2009 2000 2010 2000 Where the first row is all the sales for the years 2000-2009, the second for years 2010-2019. The DecadeEnd is a sliding window that moves forward by a set ammount for each row in the result set. • Advice on database design / SQL for retrieving data with chronological order

  I am creating a database that will help keep track of which employees have been on a certain training course. I would like to get some guidance on the best way to design the database. Specifically, each employee must attend the training course each year and my database needs to keep a history of all the dates on which they have attend the course in the past. The end user will use the software as a planning tool to help them book future course dates for employees. When they select a given employee they will see: (a) Last attendance date (b) Projected future attendance date(i.e. last attendance date + 1 calendar year) In terms of my database, any given employee may have multiple past course attendance dates: EmpName AttandanceDate Joe Bloggs 1st Jan 2007 Joe Bloggs 4th Jan 2008 Joe Bloggs 3rd Jan 2009 Joe Bloggs 8th Jan 2010 My question is what is the best way to set up the database to make it easy to retrieve the most recent course attendance date? In the example above, the most recent would be 8th Jan 2010. Is there a good way to use SQL to sort by date and pick the MAX date? My other idea was to add a column called ‘MostRecent’ and just set this to TRUE. EmpName AttandanceDate MostRecent Joe Bloggs 1st Jan 2007 False Joe Bloggs 4th Jan 2008 False Joe Bloggs 3rd Jan 2009 False Joe Bloggs 8th Jan 2010 True I wondered if this would simplify the SQL i.e. SELECT Joe Bloggs WHERE MostRecent = ‘TRUE’ Also, when the user updates a given employee’s attendance record (i.e. with latest attendance date) I could use SQL to: Search for the employee and set the MostRecent value to FALSE Add a new record with MostRecent set to TRUE? Would anybody recommended either method over the other? Or do you have a completely different way of solving this problem?

What I'm finding is that when I use Google's Webmaster Tools to fetch my site (to see what a GoogleBot sees) it sees this.   A table has timestamp column. A sample value in that could be 2010-03-30 13:42:42. With Hibernate, I am doing a range query Restrictions.between("column-name", fromDate, toDate). The Hibernate mapping for this column is as follows. <property name="orderTimestamp" column="order_timestamp" type="java.util.Date" /> Let's say, I want to find out all the records that have the date 30th March 2010 and 31st March 2010. A range query on this field is done as follows. Date fromDate = new SimpleDateFormat("yyyy-MM-dd").parse("2010-03-30"); Date toDate = new SimpleDateFormat("yyyy-MM-dd").parse("2008-03-31"); Expression.between("orderTimestamp", fromDate, toDate); This doesn't work. The query is converted to respective timestamps as "2010-03-30 00:00:00" and "2010-03-31 00:00:00". So, all the records for the 31st March 2010 are ignored. A simple solution to this problem could be to have the end date as "2010-03-31 23:59:59." But, I would like to know if there is way to match only the date part of the timestamp column. Also, is Expression.between() inclusive of both limits? Documentation doesn't throw any light on this.

  I need to connect to a MongoDB instance from my EJB3 application, running on glassfish 3.0.1. The Mongo project provides a set of drivers, and I'm able to use them in a standalone Java application. How would I use them in a JEE application? Or maybe better phrasing: how would I make a 3rd party library available to my application when it runs in an EJB container?   I'm having problems getting AppendHeader to work properly if I am also using an authorize filter. I'm using an actionfilter for my AJAX actions that applies Expires, Last-Modified, Cache-Control and Pragma (though while testing I have tried including it in the action method itself with no change in results). If I don't have an authorize filter the headers work fine. Once I add the filter the headers I tried to add get stripped.   Hello! I have such situation - I'd like to build timeline control. So I have UserControl and ItemsControl on it (every row represents some person). The ItemsControl contains another ItemsControl as ItemsControl.ItemTemplate - it shows e.g. events for the person arranged by event's date. So it looks as some kind of grid with dates as a column headers and e.g. peoples as row headers. ........................|.2010.01.01.....2010.01.02.....2010.01.03 Adam Smith....|......[some event#1].....[some event#2]...... John Dow.......|...[some event#3].....[some event#4]......... I can have a lot of persons (ItemsControl #1 - 100-200 items) and a lot of events occured by some day (1-10-30 events per person in one day) the problem is that when user scrolls ItemsControl #1/#2 it happened toooo sloooooowwww due to a lot of elements should be rendered in one time (as I have e.g. a bit of text boxes and other elements in description of particular event) Question #1 - how can I improve it? May be somebody knows better way to build such user control? I have to mention that I'm using custom Virtual panel, based on some custom Virtual panel implementation found somewhere in internet... Question #2 - I'd like to make image with help of WriteableBitmap and render data bound control to image and to show image instead of a lot of elements. Problem is that I'm trying to render invisible data bound control (created in code behind) and it has actualWidth/Height equals to zero (so nothing rendered). How can I solve it? There's an added layer of complexity that I have a date restriction (This is on a per user/group basis) where certain user groups can only see between certain dates.
