  • Recommended ASP.NET Shared Hosting (USA)

    Ok, I have to admit I'm getting fed up with www.discountasp.net's pricing model and this annoyance has built up over the past 8 years or so. I've been with them for years and absolutely love them on the technical side, however it's getting ridiculously expensive for so little that you get. I mean here's my scenario: 1) I am running 2 SQL Server databases which costs me $10/ea per month so that's $20/month for 2 and I only get 500 mb disk space which is horrible 2) I am paying $10/mo just for the hosting itself which I only get 1 gig of disk space! I mean common! 3) I am simply running 2 small apps (Screwturn Wiki & Subtext Blog)...so I don't really care if it's up 99% or not, it's not worth paying a total of $300 just to keep these 2 apps running over discountasp.net Anyone else feel the same? Yes, I know they have great support, probably have great servers running behind this but in the end I really don't care as long as my site is up 95% or better. Yes, the hosting toolset rocks. But you know I bet you I can find a similar set somewhere else. I like how I can totally control IIS 7 at discountasp and I can control my own app pool etc. That's very powerful and essential. But anyone have any good alternatives to discountasp that gives me close to the same at a much more reasonable cost point? I mean http://www.m6.net/prices.aspx gives you 10 SQL Databases for $7 and 200 gigs disk space! I don't know about their tools or support but just looking at those numbers and some other hosts I've seen, I feel that discountasp.net is way out of line. They don't even offer any purchasing discounts such as it would be nice if my 2nd SQL Server is only $5/month not $10...stuff like this, to make it much more realistic and fair. Opinions (people who do have discountasp.net, people who have left them, or people who have another host they like)??? But geez $300 just to host a couple DBs and lightweight open source apps? Not worth the price they are charging. I'm almost at a price point that enables me to get a decent dedicated server! I really don't care about beta ASP.NET frameworks support. Not a big deal to me. If you have alternative suggestions rather than your experience with discountasp, I'd like to know how their toolset is. Do you have complete control over your DB in terms of adding users, and same goes for the web app pool, etc.? Discountasp.net's control panel rocks. I don't want to loose the ability to at least control and add virtual directories, recycle my dedicated app pool myself, backup my sql database myself, through tools which is what discountasp does give you. I'd also want to know that the hoster at least gets the latest and greatest in terms of non-beta ASP.NET related frameworks available to its shared hosters.

    I've tried to develop a simple winform utility which is using xml file as its database. I've used VS 2008 express edition, C#. When this utility tries to write into the xml file then this error is displayed on other computer. I've tried to provide System.Xml.dll & System.Xml.Linq.dll in the same folder on the other computer but no use. What does it means? Any solution?     I have a custom user control called GoalProgressControl. Another user control contains GoalProgressControl and sets its GoalName attribute via databinding in XAML. However, the GoalName property is never set. When I check it in debug mode GoalName remains "null" for the control's lifetime. How do I set the GoalName property? Is there something I am doing incorrectly? I am using .NET Framework 4 and Silverlight 4. I am relatively new to XAML and Silverlight so any help would be greatly appreciated. I have attempted to change GoalProgressControl.GoalName into a POCO property but this causes a Silverlight error, and my reading leads me to believe that databound properties should be of type DependencyProperty. I've also simplified my code to just focus on the GoalName property (the code is below) with no success. Both the controls are created at rowdatabound event of gridview. Now the problem is that when Steps: 1) select any of the value from BaseFieldControl(DropDownList) which is rendered from Choice Column of SPList 2) enter any thing in textbox in another column of grid. 3) textchanged event fires up and in textchange event rebound the grid. Problem: the selected value becomes the first item or the default value(if any). but if i do not rebound the grid at text changed event it works fine.   • Having trouble using psservice and sc.exe between Windows Server 2008 machines

    I'm trying to control services on one W2k8 machine from another; no domain just a workgroup. The user account I'm logged in as is an administrator on both machines. I've tried both psservice and sc.exe. These work in a Windows Server 2003 environment but it looks like I need to an extra step or two due to the changed security model in 2008. Any ideas as to how grant permission to the Service Control Manager (psservice) or OpenService (sc)? I tried running the DOS window with "Run As Administrator" and it made no difference.   • Cisco SR520w FE - WAN Port Stops Working

    I have setup a Cisco SR520W and everything appears to be working. After about 1-2 days, it looks like the WAN port stops forwarding traffic to the Internet gateway IP of the device. If I unplug and then plug in the network cable connecting the WAN port of the SR520W to my Comcast Cable Modem, traffic startings flowing again. Also, if I restart the SR520W, the traffic will flow again. Any ideas?   • How do you host multiple public facing websites on a VPS?

    We host about 30 websites using typical shared hosting plans using ASP.NET and SQL 2000/2005/2008. I am now wondering about hosting all of these websites using our own virtual private server. This is clearly cheaper but comes with a lot of questions I need answers to: Is the risk of having to keep this VPS server up and running worth it? Until now, the host provider has managed the server and we have not had to worry about crashes, downtime, software patches etc. We are not server administrators, we are programmers, so this is not really our expertise. On the other hand, it may not be hard to learn. When we make a website live, we log in to a domain management control panel and change the primary and secondary name servers to point to our shared web host: Eg ns1.sharedwebhost.com and ns2.sharedwebhost.com These name servers are going to have to change when we have a VPS. I don’t understand anything about how to set this up. Is there some useful info anyone could direct me to? Or is there software we need to install to make the primary and secondary name servers work on our VPS? The control panel we have for shared hosting comes with DNS management like this: http://www.yart.com.au/stackoverflow/dns.png What software would I need to install to create this for each site we host at a VPS? The control panel we have for shared hosting also comes with a POP email interface that allows email addresses to be added easily by our customers. Is this something that can be easily set up at a VPS so clients can manage their own email addresses? Is there software we need to install to make this work?

    I have a new Dell XPS with an NVIDIA GeForce GT 445M and an old (several years) Epson PowerLite Cinema 550 projector. Windows 7 refuses to recognize that the projector is connected under normal conditions (I'll get to the strange condition in a moment). Here are some things that I have already tried: Confirm that the projector continues to work well on my old Windows XP laptop. Confirm that the video cable (HDMI to HDMI) is connected Make sure the Dell laptop is plugged in to wall power at all times Reboot both the computer and the projector Click "Detect" under the "Connect to an External Display" Windows dialog (no reaction) Click "Rigorous Display Detection" under NVIDIA Control Panel (dialog: none found) Checked "Force Television Detection on startup" under "My display is not shown..." in NVIDIA Control Panel (no effect) Here's where it gets weird... My projector has three states: off, standby and on. Standby means the power switch on the back is on, but the projector is effectively off (no picture, no access to menu or controls). When I plug in the HDMI cable while the projector is in standby, Windows detects the projector! It lets me switch to Duplicate, Extend, or Project Only mode, and adjusts the resolution appropriately. A new Generic Plug-n-Play monitor shows up in my device manager. A "Seiko EPSON PJ" display shows up in my NVIDIA control panel. Then if I turn my projector on, Windows no longer recognizes the display. This is true whether I turn the projector on while the HDMI cable is plugged in, or if I unplug the HDMI cable while turning on the projector. Anyone have any ideas, because I'm completely stumped...?

  • Chrome caching 302 redirects

    I have a php script with is used to rotate banner images on a site. Under Firefox/IE page refreshes will make another request and a different image will be returned. Under Chrome, the request seems to be cached and only opening the page in a new tab will cause it to actually query the script. I believe this used to work in older versions of chrome, I've tried a few different types of redirect codes all with the same result.   • Silent install FirePro v4900 Driver on Windows Embedded 7 Standard

    I'm trying to install the Drivers for a FirePro v4900 on a Windows Embedded 7 Standard 64bit OS. I want the system to be as small as possible, so i would rather not install the whole catalyst control center, but only the necessary drivers. Because the installation should be accomplished absolutely unattended, the installation process of the FirePro-Driver should also be done without any user interaction. I see two possible solutions for the Problem: Install only the Drivers: Is it possible to solely install the necessary drivers? How would i achieve that? This solution would be the preferred one, because of the smaller footprint. Silent custom install the provided "FirePro_8.911.3.3_VistaWin7_X32X64_135673.exe" (found at ATI FirePro™ Driver). Is there a way, to do that? Thank you in advance for your support! Update: I managed to accomplish a silent installation. I extracted the contents of the above mention installer-file and ran \$_OUTDIR\Bin64\Setup.exe -Install. (There are some other Parameters, just run Setup.exe /?). But i couldn't achieve to just install the drivers without the Cataclyst Control Center, and it seams the Control Center has some unfulfilled dependencies and so it crashes...

  • OpenVZ Can't initialize containers after install

    I have installed OpenVZ on centos 6 on a dedicated server. I followed quick installation guide on openvz wiki. After installing thru yum, I don't know why, but grub.conf wasn't automatically updated to accomodate new kernel, so I had to do it manually. I edited grub.conf, added openvz kernel and rebooted - it went fine. Server went up into openvz kernel and it worked, it started openvz service byitself. But after I created a container, added IP to it and attempted to start it, I couldn't. Here is the output from the shell: [root@cloud2 ~]# vzctl start 86 Starting container ...   • NIC are not advertising Correct Speeds

    I have an IBM x336 that is not advertising the proper LINK speeds. One interface is the other is not. I've tried to Force it to 1000/Full but then it just shows link down. I have confirmed the switch is set to auto negotiate like my switches. I have also changed out my Ethernet Cables. I'm at a loss where to look further. I have verified that it will connect at 1G on a different swtich. This also has happened on two different servers on the same switch.   • System recognizes admin password on the Welcome screen but not when elevating

    I set up Windows 7 with a couple of standard accounts, and an administrator account (called Odin). I can log in to Odin just fine from the Welcome screen. While logged into Odin I can do anything that requires administrator privileges without a password: just hit Yes in the User Account Control dialog. If I am logged into one of the other accounts and I do something that requires elevation (e.g. most installers, and some control panel functionality), then Windows presents me with a User Account Control dialog asking "Do you want to allow the following program to make changes to this computer? To continue, type an administrator password, and then click Yes." The account shown in this dialog is Odin, so I enter Odin's password. But Windows redisplays the dialog with the message "Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password." This always happens, and has done so for many months, probably since I first got the computer. Why does Odin's password work from the Welcome screen, but not when elevating? Please note that I am not asking how to recover Odin's password. I remember the password I originally set for Odin, and it works as it should from the Welcome screen, but is not recognized when elevating. The password has no funny characters, just letters and digits. Thanks!

  • Unable to PPTP through NAT on Cisco 881

    I'm trying to connect to a PPTP server which is sat behind a Cisco 881 NAT router. The server is running Ubuntu Server 12.04 and is running Poptop pptpd as the PPTP daemon listening for connections. As discussed in my other question, I'm trying to setup a Cisco 881 router to replace my old Linksys WAG320N. This same server and WAN connection worked fine with the WAG320N with no special configuration, other than allowing 1723 in through the firewall. On the Cisco 881, I'm using the newer ip nat enable or NAT NVI to setup static routes in through the firewall for the services running behind the router. My reason being that I can't run another copy of my live DNS domains internally with local IP addresses in. For the purposes of this question, though, I have rebuilt the router with ip nat inside/outside style NAT'ing, but this issue is still apparent. HTTP/SMTP/IMAP etc. all work ok from both the WAN and LAN interfaces of the router. I'm only having issues with SIP (see other question) and PPTP. My issue is that the GRE doesn't appear to be passing through NAT correctly and one end of the connection is not receiving GRE traffic when it should be, so the server hangs up the connection. When attempting a connection, I can see in show ip nat nvi translations that both a TCP translation on 1723 is setup and also a GRE translation is setup also. I appear to be able to see GRE related packets on the LAN that the server is on, so I am lead to believe that the server is sending(?) GRE packets, however running Wireshark on a client PC when attempting a connection shows absolutely no GRE packets. Whilst there are no configuration directives in my config posted above (that I can pin point) which would specifically block them, it would appear that the GRE packets are not being allowed in/out of the router's firewall, even though a NAT translation entry is setup to the server's LAN address. Would anyone be able to provide me with some help to ensure that GRE packets are not blocked by the router's firewall, so that this can be ruled out as a possible issue please?

  • How to use AND/OR Building Block content in a Word 2007 template

    I am creating a Schedule of Work template and am successfully using Developer Tab and Quick Parts to allow user to choose content on an "either/or" basis: either A; OR B; OR C; etc., essentially choose one option from many. One Building Block control, one paragraph, nice and clean. Now what I need to do but cannot seem to figure out, is how to allow user to choose content on an "and/or" basis: either A AND B; A OR B AND C; B AND D AND E OR F; etc., essentially choose several options from many on a variable basis. One Building Block control, maybe one paragraph, maybe three or more paragraphs. Not so clean. I thought of building choice options for all possible paragraph combinations, but I can have as many as 7 or 8 different paragraphs, and that solution quickly becomes unworkable. Multiple controls--some of which will be left unused doesn't work either, since I cannot find an easy way to have a "Choose or Delete" control that actually deletes if "Delete" is chosen. Recommendations are most welcome.
