• Windows 7 client can't connect to CentOS PPTP VPN

  Have a Macintosh (10.8.2) that connects just fine to a CentOS 6.0 virtual private server (OpenVZ, with PPP added by the host) via PPTP. A Windows 7 Home Premium client (virtualized in Sun's Virtual Box), on the same computer, using the same Ethernet connection, cannot connect to the Linux VPN server. I have iptables disabled (for testing) on the Linux box.   Hello, I browsed through the archives, and it seems like there's no live CD from which to run a good, up-to-date anti-virus application, at least to check whether a Windows host has been compromised The Ultimate Boot CD has only three AV applications, and their virus definition is from... 2007 In a report, ClamAV scored very low. It's nice that it's open-source, but if it's not as good as commercial alternatives... Those of you into this kind of thing, do you confirm that there's just no good live CD to inspect Windows hosts, and possibly repair them? If there is, what do you recommend? Thank you.

  I find the UI and general usability of the prepackaged windows Media Player to be cludgy and at times incomprehensible. I used to use programs like WinAmp and Sonique, many years ago. What are some current alternatives to the windows Media Player? I don't have iTunes - I'm pretty happy with ripping my own audio files from my album collection. I'm specifically looking for the follow qualities/abilities: Easy sorting and manipulation of the media library Easy tagging of media - marking favorites and ratings, etc. Preferably lightweight. Something like a Picasa for audio media.

• Expanding Files 0%, error 0x80070017 Windows 7 x64 RTM

  I have downloaded Windows 7 x64 from MSDN. I have checked the hash of the file and it is correct. I have them made a bootble USB stick (http://kmwoley.com/blog/?p=345 (had to use my vista bootsect.exe as running 32bit at the moment). When I boot from the USB it fails when expanding the file. It stays on 0% and fails after around 90 seconds. The error is 0x80070017. As the hash is correct and I am using USB I guess it could be a hardware problems. Any advice how to get Windows 7 installed? The machine is a Dell Studio Slim.

• Lost disk space in Windows 7, cannot find the missing

  My hard drive is complaining it is low on disk space, but a strange thing seems to be happening: Explorer reports 10Gb of available space (on a 120 Gb hard disk), chkdsk in the command prompt does the same but if I use a disk space tool such as SpaceSniffer or WinDirStat, only 50Gb of data is found. My guess is that there somehow is a hold on a large block of disk space (but that's just a guess) because of a prior very large (40 Gb) download attempt that didn't complete. There isn't 40Gb of files on the drive (hidden or visible), yet Explorer insists that something is there. How can I claim back this hard disk drive (without formatting my hard disk)? SpaceMonger is providing a clue, reporting four unscannable folders which add up to 43Gb: C:\RRBackups C:\System Volume Information C:\Windows\Csc\v2.06 C:\Windows\System32\LogFiles\Wmi\RtBackup Does anybody know what these folders are for, and how I can claim back at least some space? Restore point claims about 4Gb, so that doesn't seem to be the main problem.

• Upgrade MySQL on Plesk on Windows

  I just got a nasty surprise when I installed a website in Unicode Hindi (Indian language) on a server, all freshly entered unicode data is turning into question marks on the server. On my dev machine it works perfectly. I found that I have MySQL version 5.0.45 (installed in default by Plesk I guess). On my dev machine i have version 5.1.33. I believe the problem could be due to the version difference. The new version of MySQL apparently has better support for Unicode than the older one. I want to upgrade MySQL on my Windows Server machine with Plesk installed on it I am reluctant to just install the new version using the mysql installer because Plesk maintains some custom settings for mysql and I am afraid the new version could change those settings and break my db. Can anyone tell me do I have to do anything special to install MySQL on plesk on windows or can I just use the new version installer?

• Intel VT-x disappeared after upgrading to Windows 8

  I've upgraded to Windows 8 some weeks ago (MSDNAA!) and today, while I was trying to run a VM, I've noticed that VT-x is disabled. Now, Hyper-V works without problems, as I've tried emulating Win7 and WP8; but VirtualBox says that VT-x is disabled and it can't run my VM. Just to double check, I've run Securable by GRC and the Intel utility and both says that I've got VT-x off. Here comes the problem: VT-x is ON in my BIOS, and it worked flawlessly before upgrading to Windows 8! Any kind of suggestion? EDIT: My CPU supports VT-x: http://ark.intel.com/products/52219

• HP Compaq T20 Thin Clients & Windows Server 2008 R2: RDP Disconnects instantly.

  Hello, I have some HP Compaq T20 Thin Clients connecting to a Windows Server 2003. Now I want to upgrade to 2008 R2, so I tested a trial installation with remote desktop in administration mode. So I try to connect my T20 to the server and... It doesn't matter if I turn off encryption or not it disconnects with an generic error instantly. The T20s have Windows CE embedded with RDP 5.2 installed. Out of curiosity I tried Windows Server 2008 (no R2) and it worked! I tried the same with a Windows 7 machine set up with- no work. I can not update the T20s to Windows NT embedded for example because they only have a low amount of flash memory. It seems the "new" version of RDP coming from Windows 7 / Windows Server 2008 R2 is completely incompatible with the older 5.2 version. I have a USB drive that I want to backup to. But how do refer to the USB drive in the batch file. I cannot seem to map a drive to it, It is called "H on Malcolm-Desktop" in windows explorer.   I've installed Steam on an external hard drive so I can play games on different computers by just moving the drive around. Since save games are often saved in My Documents or AppData, but I want them to move with the external hard drive, I wrote a batch file that sets environment variables before starting steam. setocal set USERPROFILE=%EXTERNAL_LETTER%\Profile\Me set APPDATA=%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming ... start %TARGETAPP% endlocal I'm not sure if this is the right way to do this on Windows, but it seems to work. However, one game saves its games in the Shared Documents folder. I've tried setting %PUBLIC% and %ALLUSERSPROFILE% but that does not seem to affect where the game looks. Is it possible to make this one program use a different Shared Documents folder, either by environment variables or some other means? The change in Shared Documents should only affect the one program, I do not want it to be a permanent or system wide change to Windows.

• Windows security unknown accounts: security breach?

  I was uploading some images I had just created to imgur earlier today and noticed that chrome couldn't access my Pictures folder. Windows tells me access was denied. Firefox didn't have an issue though I went to it through windows explorer and it worked fine, and looked at the security tab under properties and noticed that there were four unknown accounts, one of which has full control privileges. I looked at my other folders in the same drive and none of them had these unknown accounts. It was only that specific Pictures folder, and all of its subfolders. What are these unknown accounts and what could it mean? Should I be worried that someone may have compromised the system (well, I should probably be worried about that all the time I guess) I read on microsoft support forums that it may be the result of a previously deleted account, but there has only been one account on this computer for months and no user account management has been performed for awhile.

• Windows 7 PC crashes after being locked a few minutes

  I have a problem with an Optiplex 755 PC running (32-bit) Windows 7 Professional. I just installed the operating system last week, and ever since, it seems to crash when I lock the screen. It doesn't happen immediately; it's usually after I walk away, so a few minutes (but I'm not sure exactly how many). I have this non-specific error in the Event log. I've run a chkdsk, thinking it might be hard drive-related, but that didn't help. • How to trigger cross-platform jobs between Windows and Unix

  I have an application which has components on Windows and Unix. I need to run overnight jobs which initiate tasks/jobs on both environment. These need to be sequenced so I cannot simple use Cron / Task Scheduler. For each job, there will be a controlling script either on Windows or Unix, but this script will need to initiate jobs on the other environment and detect when they are complete and a success/failure code. In the past I have achieved this using 'flag files' on a samba share. This worked but required 'polling' behaviour on the receiving end which I do not consider optimal. I would prefer not to have to embed user credentials in script if possible.

• Windows 7 boot problem on a Lenovo Thinkpad Z61m 9450HAG

  Hello, I recently did a full upgrade of windows 7 on my thinkpad, everything worked fine after up until the second reboot (the first reboot after some updates installed worked OK). At second reboot time the system would just black screen just before the Windows logo appears, disk/wireless/power/battery lights are all lit and the disk light is active (flickering). However, if I remove my battery and boot with just power it boots fine and quickly, and everything is OK. Any help on why this wont boot with battery plugged in is greatly appreciated - i need to take this battery out on the road/trains etc.... Cheers Matt

• Windows Explorer folders jumping

  Windows Explorer in Windows 7 seems to jump around more than previous versions. The directory forlders seem to want to reposition the directory "just right" in the display. So opening a subfolder can cause a significant shift in the display. Aside from annoying, this has also caused a different directory to be positioned under my cursor and a file or sub-sub-directory to be opened incorrectly. (I'm not talking here about keeping things onscreen). Any way to slow this down?

• Enabling Surround sound on a Realtek ALC892 via SPDIF, on Windows 7

  I have a problem with my ALC892, on an ASRock mainboard (ASRock 890FX Deluxe4). I get only stereo sounds if I use SPDIF connection, in general. My amp shows that is getting surround sound only when I use the Test feature of Windows 7. This test feature allows to know which formats are supported by the audio chip. The tests render correctly both Dolby Digital and DTS. You can find this test under Sounds, Playback Devices, Select Digital Audio, then "Properties". I am using Windows 7 x64, with the latest drivers from the official Realtek website. I also tested other driver versions, both from the Realtek website and from the ASRock one, but had no luck. Thanks for the help. Some specs: CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 965 MOBO: ASRock 890FX Deluxe4 (with onboard Realtek ALC892) Audio amp: Onkyo R-380 (works fine with other sources like PS3 and Xbox 360)

• Serial number not found, copy of Windows not genuine

  I have an HP-G71-340US notebook that I purchased 11/29/09. When I power it up, a black screen comes on that shows "serial number not found" and it also says that my copy of Windows 7 Home Basic is not genuine – but my computer came with Windows 7 Home Premium. In BIOS, my serial number is not shown either and I did pull out the little battery to reset it which allowed me to bypass the suddenly new locked BIOS that needed a password to enter. I'm sure this is a masterpiece created by my 6 or 9 yr old child while trying to play on my laptop. Can I fix these two problems?

  I have my Git repository hosted at github.com. I would like to push updates and such to github.com and then log into my Windows server and do a git pull to get my changes. Is this optimal? It seems like whenever I try to do a git pull on the server, the files seem to get updated somehow since the last pull. And so I am unable to get the update as git says I need to commit my local (Windows server) changes. How can I use git like I want to? Or is there a better way?

  I have a HP st5742, which is a tower that does not have a hard drive and I am trying to boot it off the network, preferably off an image. It was designed along with the program HP Image Manager, however this program has been discontinued by HP and I can not seem to find a way to get a copy. If this helps, I am running my network with windows server 2008 R2 and would like the streaming client to be running windows. I have spent days searching for a way to deploy this machine however I can not seem to find a straight forward program, guide, or way to do this. I am new to this sort of thing but I willing to reading into the subject, all I need is a point in the right direction. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Change Language in Windows 8.1

  I try to change the output language of windows 8.1 (not preview). I installed a German version of windows 8.1 and try to change language over the control panel as it is suggested by microsoft. But the change has no effect, and if i check the Language options it says "Es ist kein Sprachpaket verfügbar" (No language pack available). I cannot find a download for the en-GB language pack either, as MS suggests using the control panel to download the files. Has anybody experienced similar problems and found a solution?.
