• Bacula backup on Linux, restore on FreeBSD

  I'd like to migrate my storage server from Linux (Debian) to FreeBSD. Biggest part of this is restoring backups saved on Linux to tape volumes on the newly installed FreeBSD. Unfortunately I don't have anywhere to test this on at the moment but I'd like to ask you if you're aware of any incompatiblities or Bacula specific settings that should be used to make this as smooth of a process as possible.

• Photo/Video gallery for Ubuntu web server

  I'm trying to have a gallery that can display images as well as videos for visitors to my web server. I'm running Ubuntu 12.10, and have Apache installed. All my images and videos are in /var/www/media. I've taken a look at bbgallery, which is simple enough for me, but I don't think it supports video. I've also looked at Single File PHP Gallery, but it doesn't support video. Does anyone know of a gallery that supports video as well, which I can use for my web server? EDIT: I do not have a database.

  The server runs well but I wonder if I should get more RAM. I only have a few MB of "free" memory and 1.2GB of "cached" memory: free: total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 3945 3893 51 0 28 1216 -/+ buffers/cache: 2648 1296 Swap: 3895 857 3038 I learned that cached memory is used while it's free and not. • Is it possible to use XP visual styles (*.msstyles) or Windows Blinds in a thinapp portable applicat

  It's been a while since I made a portable (Office 2007) Thinapp application, and since then I've uninstalled VMWare from my machine to free up space, so I'd like to know if someone already knows the answer to this before I set up everything again to try it. I'm thinking of installing a visual style (*.msstyles, for XP) along with the application to thinapp before post-setup capture. Failing that, maybe I'll try with visual mods such as Windows Blinds. The purpose is to be able to run a portable application with a specific visual style. So my question is: Is it possible? (I believe it somehow is, since VirtualBox does something similar to XP Mode) If it is, will it work on a computer with the "classic" Windows style? If it's not, will it work with another virtualization software? (Xenocode?) If it's not possible with *.msstyles, will it work with visual mods such as Windows Blinds? Thanks for any input! • Subnet calculator for MS Excel

However, does anyone have details/a link for a version of this that offers similar functionality but is in an excel spreadsheet. • PCI-express - is there a typo in the Intel 5500 overview

  The overview for the 5500 and 5520 chipsets state that there is a total bandwidth of up to 48GB/s on each PCI Express x8 interface. http://www.intel.com/products/server/chipsets/5500-5520/5500-5520-overview.htm My understanding (admittedly from wikipedia) is that PCI-e Gen 2 runs at 500MB/s per lane. The 5520 has 36 lanes, and so would be limited to a total of 18GB/s. Am I missing something here, or is Intel's claimed 48GB/s a typo that should say 18GB/s ?

• Graphics and USB devices freezing soon after OS loads

  I run Ubuntu/Windows dual boot. Last night I started the upgrade to Ubuntu 12.04, and my computer has not worked since in either Windows or Ubuntu. Here's what I got when I rebooted after the upgrade, and continue to get every time I boot: Gets to GRUB screen OK. Choose Ubuntu - black screen or crazy purple lines. At first I assumed something went wrong with the upgrade (often happens). Choose Windows - works fine, I log in, but soon after that the graphics freeze (sometimes with purple artifacts). The keyboard and mouse (both USB) also lose power at the same instant, and none of the USB ports have power to them. This happens sooner or later every time I boot. Update: the HDD also appears to lose power at the same point. I have tried a live CD, but my computer refuses to boot any CD even after disabling all other boot options in the BIOS. I have disconnected everything except keyboard, mouse, graphics card with one monitor, one RAM sick and HDD; no change. I also took the little battery out to reset CMOS. I am pretty sure no matter how wrong the Ubuntu upgrade went, it wouldn't cause the above symptoms in Windows. So the only explanation I can think of is that a hardware failure occurred at the same time. Some possible causes of this I can think of are: A couple of days before this, I added a third screen (which worked fine). About a week before, my house lost power in a storm (no ill effects over the past few days though). What can I do, other than buy a new motherboard/CPU and hope it works? Unfortunately I don't have another box to swap parts into to test at the moment.

• Neophyte question about using Subtotal and CountIf in Excel

  Hi, I'm using Excel and having some problems with Countif and I don't understand how it works differently from SubTotal. I used the GUI to subtotal stuff and all the subtotals are right. Then I attempted to use the Countif to see how many requirements passed. That worked for the first subtotal only. It's easy to see why. When I look at the box for the subtotal, it says: =SUBTOTAL(3,C286:C292) When I look at my formula for passed requirements, I have: =IF(ISTEXT(A285),COUNTIF(C286:C338,"=Passed"),"") Notice that the last column is wrong. How did the Subtotal manage to keep this correct? I typed in the formula for passed requirements and dragged it down the page. Everything behaved as expected (even the bit about ISTEXT dutifully figured out which row was which), but it got the last row wrong. Any ideas? • windows 7 crash during hibernation

  At times, when I hibernate my Dell Latitude e6400 with Windows 7 (64 bit), the laptop screen goes black as it should, but then it takes several minutes before it powers down. Then, when I attempt to "resume," Windows boots up from a fresh startup, with all my work lost, and tells me that it's recovered from a serious error. What can I do to resolve this problem? Other background info: -I got a new hard drive with plenty of space about a year ago; I only use a small fraction of that space. This sometimes happens when I don't have any programs running at all. If it's relevant, I do have Dropbox and OneDrive running in the background, though. -The problem usually occurs when I hibernate just after I unplug from an external monitor to bring my laptop home, but I believe it happens at other times, too. • Creating an interactive "movie" from a Microsoft PowerPoint 2003 presentation (.ppt file) containing animation

  I have created a Microsoft PowerPoint 2003 presentation (a .ppt file) on Windows XP that contains a lot of animation, using PowerPoint's Custom Animation tools. I would like to share this presentation -- animations and all -- with a colleague who has a Mac computer and does not have PowerPoint or Keynote. Is it possible to make a "movie" from my .ppt file that contains a lot of animation? I recall that another colleague once made me a QuickTime "movie" from a PowerPoint file, I think (although I do not remember whether he made it using Windows or Mac). On this "movie," clicking advanced the animation/slide, just as clicking would do in an actual PowerPoint presentation. In that sense, it was not really strictly a movie, since I could interact with it by clicking. Do you know how to make such an interactive "movie" from a PowerPoint 2003 presentation (a .ppt file)? We are looking for something that will provide the following functionality (or achieve the same result, i.e. a cost-effective backup strategy for files stored in Rackspace Cloud Files): Work out which files have been added to or modified in a Rackspace Cloud account (since the last backup). Create a ZIP (or similar) of these files and store them in Amazon Glacier. Keep a record of which files are in which ZIPs. Ideally, restore either a single file or all files from Glacier back into Rackspace.

• USB key to pass password in Centos 6

  I had a room mate that put a livecd in my desktop and looked around on my machine. I caught him in the act and threw him out. I haven't had a room mate for a while now and so as to avoid the livecd issue again I encrypted the hard drive, the machine is running centos 6.3. Is there anyway that I can avoid typing the password in each time if I have usb key in the machine to feed the password to the system? Additional question. Currently I can only get one of these to work at a time. • Unknown redirect & slow page load

  Hello: I am hosting a website with GoDaddy's "Deluxe Linux" package. Of late, I noticed my website is loading nearly 10x slower. As I begin to debug, I noticed the following redirect occurring however nothing in my script would be causing it. It hits the URL, www.domain.com, then a 302 fires to www.domain.com/39dnda, then another 302 back to www.doamin.com ??? The first 302 is random each time... • Will HDCP cause problems with a MacBook Pro using a VGA projector?

  I'm planning on using a MacBook Pro with a projector that only has a VGA input (through the MBP's Mini DisplayPort and a Mini DisplayPort to VGA converter). Will this have problems with HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection), either under Snow Leopard or Windows XP? I'll only be showing other people's photos, user-generated movies or PowerPoint slides. The MacBook Pro was purchased from Apple new in December 2009.

• Installing and maintaining an email server

  I need to move hosting providers for four or five domains and for several reasons I'm considering a Linux VPS rather than staying with my current shared, managed hosting provider. The only thing that's stopping me is email. I have lots of experience running and maintaining Apache, but none with email servers. Based on some research, if I want to keep what I've using now, it looks like I'd be going with Postfix and Dovecot, and probably Exim and SpamAssassin. I have no problem performing regular maintenance and watching for security updates, but I don't want to bite off more than I can chew. For someone new to email services, how hard is it to set up an email server that is externally accessible (via SMTP and POP3, not IMAP), available over SSL/TLS and reasonably reliable for multiple domains? How much of a time commitment is it to maintain one?

• Windows crashes when I try to compress large .MOV file from iPhone

  I have a 40 minute, 6 gigabyte .MOV file that I transferred from my iPhone to my PC. I need to upload the video to Youtube but the file is too large. When I try to compress the video, my computer will shut off when the process reaches 3 or 4 percent. This has happened in Windows Live Movie Maker, Riva FLV encoder, and VLC. Any ideas on how I can get this file down to a reasonable size so I can upload it online?

How does, for example, four 320x240 cameras fare against a single 640x480 camera? I'm not well versed in the architecture of the USB interface, what are the performance caveats? By performance I mean how would it affect the time to read the image data from multiple cameras compared to a single one.

  I'm working on a project to replace my organisation's aging Slackware gateway/router/firewall machine in our colo rack. Previously we used rc.firewall but we are now looking for something more modern and easily configurable. The requirements are: Act as a gateway router & firewall Port forwarding to a Terminal Server in the colo IP/traffic accounting, preferably accessible via SNMP (already using cacti for other servers) Possibility of acting as a PPTP server & routing these connections Is not an out-of-the-box Cisco product (don't have the finances or support to maintain it) I'd prefer to use Ubuntu or some other Debian-based distro but something that integrates everything we're looking for is certainly an option if it offers all the desired features and is easy to configure. Is there a simple set of packages that will provide me with the Firewall & Accounting features, or am I best served with a custom-built distro / other solution?

• LDAP System Authentication in Ubuntu

  Hi, I'm having a bit of an issue with system authentication against LDAP in Ubuntu. The LDAP server is OpenLDAP on Ubuntu 10.10, and the client is Ubuntu 10.10 also. I've set up the client by following the "LDAP Authentication" steps at https://help.ubuntu.com/10.10/serverguide/C/openldap-server.html apt-get install libnss-ldap; auth-client-config -t nss -p lac_ldap; pam-auth-update I've done these steps on the server and been able to see LDAP users when running getent passwd. Doing the same steps on the client, getent passwd does not return any LDAP users. Any ideas?

• Advance DNS - Redirecting Emails to new webhost

  I am not to sure if this question belongs here but I will surely find out soon enough. I have two web hosts (Not sure why it has been setup this way but it has). I do not want to use the original web host to handle the emails as the Data that we get from them is 500 mb which is already full with hosting the website. The second web host has an unlimited data plan and was created so we could use this host for the email accounts. Now the problem is I have reset the Advance DNS Zone records on both accounts and I am not sure what they were before. (Silly me should have taken a backup of how it was setup before hand I know) Emails were working before and going to the second hosts server now they are going to the first host but it has no email addresses setup for use so all emails are bouncing saying that the address does not exist. Host 1 IP: 192.185.96.110 Host 2 IP: 27.54.88.66 So far I have changed the Advanced DNS Zone record on Host 1 with the following: A Record: mail.australisinstitute.qld.edu.au - 27.54.88.66 I have not made any changes on Host 2 and both hosts have the default MX Records. If I need to provide any more information I can but I just hope someone can decipher what I have said haha. Cheers in advance!
