  • Login box not shown on Ubuntu

    I've installed Ubuntu 10.04 (64bit) as a guest OS in VirtualBox, using Windows7 Professional (64bit) as host. After Ubuntu install, I did installed Xfce4 (sudo apt-get install xfce4). Logged in using a Xfce session, and when I logged out, I couldn't see the login box anymore, only the regular gnome background from login screen. Then I restarted the virtual machine, and now I'm not able to see the login box anymore, only the gnome background. Does someone knows how to solve this? Thanks in advance Update: I've tried to use Xubuntu, that comes with Xfce. And I'm facing the same problem. As a common denominator from the two cases, now I see the problem arises after I've updated the system, and then installed curl (via apt-get), zlib (make process), git (make process). But I'm not sure this can be the cause for this ... Update: I isolated the problem. The bad guy is zlib, but I don't have a clue why. In fact, it does crash not only ubuntu and xubuntu, but also Debian (Yes, I've tested all). I'll keep this question in case someone have the same problem, but I think my initial question is not valid anymore.

  • Intel Atom overheating in ASUS EEE Box 1501P

    I have had an ASUS EEE Box 1501P for just a little bit over a year. Of course it breaks 2 months after the warranty runs out. http://www.asus.com/Eee/EeeBox_PC/EeeBox_PC_EB1501P/ I have been using the box as a Home Media Center. Running mostly 24/7 often pausing a video overnight. Since last week the fan started running extremely loud. After some digging I found that the Intel Atom CPU in it is overheating and the built-in sensor is reporting temperatures way over 105°C. This got me worried, so I took the unit apart. Completely vacuumed the heat sink, oiled the fan, but the unit is still showing the same behaviour. After turning it on and just observing the hardware monitor in the BIOS the temperature slowly rises from 40°C to over 95°C in appx 5 min. I am running the newest BIOS and a lightweight Linux OPENELEC OS with XBMC on it. Now I am wondering if it could be a faulty heat sensor in the Atom. Recommended running temperature is up to 85°C, but I have not detected any performance hits when running at the above mentioned 105°C and there seem to be no software faults. How can an Atom with an attached heat sink and a fan running at full capacity even get this hot in the first place at 0 load? Aren't those things designed to generate virtually no heat? Could it be a faulty heat sensor? What shall I try to fix this? I would prefer not to damage the CPU, since it is hard fused into the motherboard and cannot be replaced. I could remove the heat pipe/heat sink, but it is getting hot, so heat is properly transferring from the CPU to the heat pipe, the fan is running at full capacity, is recently oiled and warm air is making it out of the exhaust. Edit: One more note: The North-bridge (or whatever it is called nowadays) is on the same heat pipe.

    I was setting up a Debian Xen domU and after booting it fine, I added basic configuration to /etc/network/interfaces and ran /etc/init.d/networking restart. This failed so I decided to reboot. After the reboot I also ran xm shutdown box. When dropped to a shell prompt it wouldn't let me login.   • Creating Active Directory on an EC2 box

    So I have Active Directory set up on a Windows Server 2008 Amazon EC2 server. Its set up correctly I think, I never got any errors with it. Just to test that I got it all set up correctly, I have a Windows 7 Professional virtual machine set up on my network to join to AD. I set the VM to use the Active Directory box as its DNS server. I type in my domain to join it, but I get the following error: DNS was successfully queried for the service location (SRV) resource record used to locate a domain controller for domain "ad.win.chigs.me": The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.ad.win.chigs.me The following domain controllers were identified by the query: ip-0af92ac4.ad.win.chigs.me However no domain controllers could be contacted. Common causes of this error include: - Host (A) or (AAAA) records that map the names of the domain controllers to their IP addresses are missing or contain incorrect addresses. - Domain controllers registered in DNS are not connected to the network or are not running. It seems that I can talk to Active Directory, but when I'm trying to contact the Domain Controller, its giving a private IP to connect to, at least thats what I can make out of it.     I've got sendmail running on a linux box. Let's say the hostname of the box is bar.com. If I run the following command, I don't receive the email (which is hosted with a third party), presumably due to the hostname pointing to the local machine. echo "Test Body" | mail -s "Test Subject" [email protected] Is there any way to get this to work so that I can receive emails at my third party email address even though it has the same hostname? Do I have to change the hostname of this server (not preferred)? It may be worth noting that I created a user "foo" on my machine and noticed that the mailbox for that account is empty.   • VBA - Access 03 - Iterating through a list box, with an if statement to evaluate

    So I have a one list box with values like DeptA, DeptB, DeptC & DeptD. I have a method that causes these to automatically populate in this list box if they are applicable. So in other words, if they populate in this list box, I want the resulting logic to say they are "Yes" in a boolean field in the table. I am looking for something that will evaluate this list one at a time (i.e. iterate through the list of values, and look for "DeptA", and if it is found add yes to the SQL string, and if it not add no to the SQL string, then march on to the next iteration). Even though the listbox populates values dynamically, they are set values, meaning i know what could end up in it. Thanks for any help, Justin

  • Ruby on Rails check box not updating on form submission

    I have an entries controller that allows users to add contact information the website. The user-submitted information isn't visible to users until the administrator checks a check box and submits the form.   • actionscript 2.0 input text box

    So, here's what I'm trying to do, and I, frankly, believe it should be obvious, but I can't figure it out. I am creating a very simple Artificial Intelligence simulation. And in this simulation there's an input box at the bottom of the screen (called "input" exactly). "input" has a variable in its properties that is called "inbox" (exactly). Using a key listener the script calls up a function when the enter button is pressed. This function has 2 if statements and an else statement which dictate the responses of the AI (named "nistra"). The problem is this, When I type in what I want to say, and hit enter, it always uses the second response ("lockpick" in the code below). I have tried variations on the code but I still don't see the solution. I believe the problem is that the "typein" variable holds all the format information from the text box as well as the variable, but I could be wrong, that information is in here as well, underneath the code itself.   • How to avoid the configuring ms office dialog box

    I always see the configuring ms office with a an endless progress bar, 2 or more weeks after I installed ms office(2000, 2003, 2010 beta). I'm not exactly sure what it is called but it is trying to configure ms office.Or maybe repairing the installation. And it sucks because when I need to access ms word NOW, I can only see that box with the progress bar. And when I press cancel, it won't open ms word, or maybe the whole suite(ms word, powerpoint, excel) What might be a possible solution to this?anyone here who has encountered it before

    I was wondering if there is a way to access a deeply nested shared networked Windows folder on Mac (Lion) like you can on windows with the Run box. say I know the folder I want is on the computer Homer-PC, the G drive, the folder ABC/234/CDE on Windows I can Win+R then \Homer-PC\G\ABC\234\CDE return and it should open that folder directly, Is there something similar on the Mac? Or is there some tiny apps that I can use to do that? Thank You

  • iPhone 3.1 Black Screen

    Since I've updated my 3G iPhone to 3.1, it will become unresponsive after ~4-5 hours. It looks like it's off, but it's not. None of the buttons do anything that I can see. The only way I can get a screen back is to do a hard reset (Power + Home). Has anyone else had this problem? What can I do to fix it? I've had it 3 happen 3 times already. Very annoying. Apparently, the Discussions forum on Apple.com also shows lots of people are having the same problem. One guy said he did a restore and that fixed it for him, which I haven't tried yet because many others also tried that and it didn't help. A few others have said turning off WIFI fixes it for them, so I'm going to try that today. Another thing I've noticed is that now, when I plug in my iPhone to my Macbook Pro, iTunes 9 does not launch. It used to before the update. ** Further update and possible solution ** I left my iPhone plugged into my Macbook Pro yesterday while at work, and didn't use it much throughout the day. I noticed it didn't lock up once. I suspect this was because it was connected to a power source. I continued to use my iPhone with no problem yesterday and today. Still no lockups as of now. I personally think this was Spotlight and/or Genius "doing it's thing" from a new install. Kinda like an OS upgrade on your Mac... Spotlight has to rebuild itself and those first couple of hours can be kinda sluggish. This would be even more so on the iPhone where processing power is limited, and I'm sure the processor is clocked down a bit while on battery power, which would further amplify the problem. Again, just my guess. My iPhone is working fine now. ** Final Solution ** Update to 3.1.2. Problem solved.

  • Virtual Box state not saving upon restart/reset/shutdown - reverting to an earlier state

    Every time I restart/shut down my VM in VirtualBox (image is Ubuntu 10.02), whenever I start it back up, it reverts to the state it was in after I installed Guest Additions. This is extremely frustrating as every time I make progress on a project, whenever it restarts (mostly from crashing), I have to redo mostly everything. Is this a known problem with Guest Additions or with Virtual Box in general, and if so is there some solution?

Is there something similar for email? This will be used in printed documentation, needs to be stable (the domain can't go stale or replaced by an NSFW site), and as generic as possible.

  • Black stripe appears to the right of the screen, impossible to get rid of

    After clicking the "Auto Config" button on my Acer AL2216w screen a stripe appeared on the right of the screen where the screen doesn't "exist" and I can't seem to take the screen viewport back even by using the OCD setting and moving it to the right. The left part of the screen is also hidden and I'm not able to see what's going on there. The PC is connected to the screen through a DVI adapter and a VGA cable. I also use multiple monitors and this is the second monitor. Anyway this seems not to be a related issue, as this used to happen even when I only had a single monitor. I managed to fix this issue once but it was more than two years ago and I can't remember what I did, and out of all of the things I've tried so far (connecting the screen to another PC and performing auto adjustment, switching the cables, etc.) none worked. Here's how it looks: Can anyone help me fix this?
