• How do you deal with the conflict between ActiveSupport::JSON and the JSON gem?

  I am stumped with this problem. ActiveSupport::JSON defines to_json on various core objects and so does the JSON gem. However, the implementation is not the same -- the ActiveSupport version takes arguments and the JSON gem version doesn't. I installed a gem that required the JSON gem and my app broke. The issue is that I'm using to_json in a controller that returns a list of objects, but I want to control which attributes are returned. When code anywhere in my system does require 'json' I get this error message: TypeError: wrong argument type Hash (expected Data) I tried a couple of things that I read online to fix it, but nothing worked. I ended up re-writing the gem to use ActiveSupport::JSON.decode instead of JSON.parse. This works but it's not sustainable...I can't be forking gems every time I want to use a gem that requires the JSON gem. Update: The best solution of this problem is to upgrade to Rails 2.3 or higher, which fixed it.

  I'm helping an artist maintain her website and have inherited some pretty outdated code. Have moved lots of redundant common code to include files and am now working on moving from inline styles to more CSS-driven styles. For the gallery pages, e.g. http://artistsatlaketahoe.com/abstract.html, a lot of inline styling is used to force the current layout. My preference would be to replace this entirely with CSS that presents the following table-like layout within the "content" div: [image] [image descriptives and purchase button] [image] [image descriptives and purchase button] [image] [image descriptives and purchase button] I'd like to middle-align the image descriptives & purchase button relative to the image if possible. And then apply some padding above and below each row to stop using tags for vertical spacing. Any ideas how to create a div that I can use to get this kind of layout? Thanks!

• How to direct people to fill out a form

  What is the best way to get people to fill out a form correctly? For instance I originally had a "Name" field on a form and I want 1 person per form. People filled it out like this: "Mark & Becky Newsman". So I broke it into 2 fields, "First Name" and "Last Name", And people are still filling it out wrong, like "First Name" = "Mark & Becky", "Last Name" = "Newsman". Are there any recommendations on how better to get people to understand that only one person's name should go there? I currently have it on two lines, would it work better to put both fields on one line? If this is on the wrong site go ahead and move it to the correct site.

• Wordpress problem

  Just recently, my client's blog http://robertnogueira.com/ encountered a bug. If you look at the site the footer has been displaced. It's been running fine until I tried to populate the posts for the 6th time with caff content. It got broke and I don't know how to fix it. I chose to ask help here because the folks here usually responds to my question unlike the wordpress forums. Please help me figure this out, I do this for a living. :(

• View Window Not Opening in Interface Builder

  When I double click the XIB file in Xcode, Interface Builder typically launches a few different windows, one of which is the View window. For some reason, however, the View window isn't opening for one of my XIB files. If I open any of the other XIB files, however, the View window does open. I'm not sure if there's a way to manually launch the View window (I looked through all of the menu items and couldn't find a way) or if I broke something in my XIB. Update: I created a connection from the app delegate to a navigation controller, which seemed to break something. When I cleared that connection, the View window came back.

• Socket.recv works but not gets or read?

  Hello I've been messing around with Sockets in Ruby some and came across some example code that I tried modifying and broke. I want to know why it's broken. • Matching First Alphanumeric Character skipping (The |An? )

  I have a list of artists, albums and tracks that I want to sort using the first letter of their respective name. The issue arrives when I want to ignore "The ", "A ", "An " and other various non-alphanumeric characters (Talking to you "Weird Al" Yankovic and [dialog]). Django has a nice start '^(An?|The) +' but I want to ignore those and a few others of my choice. I am doing this in Django, using a MySQL db with utf8_bin collation. EDIT Well my fault for not mentioning this but the database I am accessing is pretty much ready only. It's created and maintained by Amarok and I can't alter it without a whole mess of issues. That being said the artist table has The Chemical Brothers listed as The Chemical Brothers so I think I am stuck here. It probably will be slow but that's not so much of a concern for me as it's a personal project.

I’m looking for a solution for this problem: My model looks like this: class Song(models.Model): Album = models.ForeignKey(Album) class Artist(models.Model): album = models.ForeignKey(Album) song = models.ForeignKey(Song, blank=True, null=True) So the user has to define a topic. He can also define a subtopic but doesn’t have to. The subtopic belongs to a topic. In the admin interface I’d like to limit the choices for subtopic based upon what he selects in topics. That should change dynamically with AJAX. I will have a closer look to django-ajax-filtered-fields but didn’t find a solution to that specific problem. Perhaps it’s another usecase for django-ajax-filtered-fields in general? Or do you know another solution to my specific requirements?

• WinForms / .Net interactive world map - how?

  In a CD collection program, I have each artist's country of origin stored in the main database and want to display a map of the world which: Colour-codes each country depending on the number of CDs by artists in that country Allows clicking on each country to filter a list of CDs to only ones by artists in that country This is a heavily simplified version of what I'm trying to do, but if I can at least get this far the rest should be easy enough to figure out. So far the closest thing I've found to what I'm trying to do is here: http://www.synergetechsolutions.com/blog/analytics-world-map-control Ideally I don't want to be embedding Flash in my program though, and the only other solutions I've found all involve SVG which I haven't managed to get working in practice outside of a web browser control (and I DEFINITELY don't want to be embedding a browser in the forms). Something in pure managed code and either GDI+ or WPF would be preferable. Are there any existing components that would get me started, or can anyone suggest how to approach it from scratch?

• Cannot see response body in ie8 when response http status code is set to some error code(422)

  I am making a requset to a web service that sends custom error with proper HTTP header when I notice some validation error, this works fine in chrome and mozilla as things always do and then it broke in ie8 as it always does! After checking the network activity, I see that ie8 is not able to get response body when HTTP code is other that 200(or at-least it seems so). In groovy I am returning error like : render(status: 422, contentType: 'TEXT', text: ((errors as JSON) as String)) Is there a way I could somehow get ie8 to read in the response body, or as an alternative I might be able to set response header but before trying that I was wondering if you guys have already seen this issue and know a solution to it. • Is it possible to pickle python "units" units?

  I'm using the Python "units" package (http://pypi.python.org/pypi/units/) and I've run into some trouble when trying to pickle them. I've tried to boil it down to the simplest possible to case to try and figure out what's going on. What am I missing? This is using v0.04 of the units package, and Google App Engine 1.4 SDK 1

  What is the best way to add errors to render if a child resource is really what's having issues and not the parent resource?   How do I convert (as an example): Señor Coconut Y Su Conjunto - Introducciõn to: Señor Coconut Y Su Conjunto - Introducciõn I've got an app that creates m3u playlists, but when the track filename, artist or title contains non ASCII characters it doesn't get read properly by the music player so the track doesn't get played. I've discovered that if I write the track out as: #EXTINFUTF8:76,Señor Coconut Y Su Conjunto - Introducciõn #EXTINF:76,Señor Coconut Y Su Conjunto - Introducciõn #UTF8:01-Introducciõn.mp3 01-Introducciõn.mp3 Then the music player will read it correctly and play the track. My problem is that I can't find the information I need to be able to do the conversion properly.

• What is the difference between these two LINQ statements?

  I had the 1nd statement in my code and found it not giving an accurate count, it was returning 1 when the correct answer is 18. To try and debug the problem I broke it out creating the 2nd statement here and the count returns 18. I just don't see what the difference is between these two. It seems like the 1st is just more compact. • Accessing a Clip Inside Another Clip in a Loaded SWF-File

  I'm writing a card game in AS3. The artist I'm working with has produced (in Flash CS4) a single swf-file containing all the card graphics and animations. The structure of the fla working file looks something like this: - Scene - CardGraphics (Movie Clip) - CardFront - CardBack - CardValueImage (Movie Clip) ... In the program I create 52 instances of my Card class, each having a MovieClip instance created from the loaded swf. The idea is to set the frame of the CardValueImage MovieClip to correspond to the Card instance's suit and rank member variables. However, I can't figure out how I access CardValueImage and call gotoAndStop (or whatever method I will need to call). • Communicating from website to desktop application (not vice-versa)

  I am designing an application such that it will have to react to certain actions required by the website, mostly the same way Last.FM client does (if you have used one) The way Last.FM client works is that, it will register a custom protocol in Windows (lastfm://) and on their website, they use that protocol to trigger certain action on the player, e.g.: lastfm://artist//similarartists will actually direct any Last.FM client running to load up similar artists. I would like to do the same thing for my application. Is this a good idea? Is there any good alternatives to send a message from a website to a desktop client in this manner?

• Help: My SSL Certificate expired but I can't renew it until Monday, is there any way I can disable SSL through IIS?

  Or perhaps force redirect to HTTP when they request HTTPS? I tried removing the SSL port settings under 'Advanced' but it broke the login page. I don't want to do a deploy/recompile right now but I am able to edit the VIEWS. However I am thinking there may be a way for IIS to do this, but then again I think the .NET code tries to force SSL. And yes, the key is that more support tickets will be caused by the browser giving a security error than if SSL was removed entirely for one day. Becaues they wouldn't very very likely not notice it being gone.

• iPhone - Image overlay MapKit framework?

  I can see with iOS4 you can now tile an image on google maps (Been looking at the TileMap example from apple). This is great as this is what I want to do, but from what I can see I need to know the GEO reference of the image so I can raster the images with the appropriate zoom levels, etc. What I have is an artist image, which is a map of a specific area and I want to overlay this image on google maps. Am I missing something here, but can this be done with a none standard map and having different zoom levels? The main reason why I need to use google maps is because of the GPS functionality, so the user will know where they currently are on the map.

After this point i am unable to get inside and grab data and i am not sure why? For example, i would expect: doc.xpath("//LyricArtist") To kick back the artist but it does not. I have tried the same thing with other feeds, such as the default RSS feed that any wordpress installation provides and if i do something like: doc.xpath("//link") I get a list of all the "links". I am definitely missing something and would love your input. thank you!!
