• How to connect the virtual networks of vmware guests running on different hosts?

  In a test setup, we are running several virtual machines on a single vmware workstation host. All virtual machines are connected via a "host only" network. This runs fine up to 2 or 3 virtual machines (depending on the host hardware). To allow more virtual machines, we want to use more host machines. Details about the environment and applications: Host PCs are running Windows XP in a corporate intranet. VMware used is Workstation 6.5 Guests are running Windows Server 2003 All guests act as Web Servers One of the guests additionally acts as Windows File server, offering shared folders for the other guests to connect to. Restrictions: VMware guests shall not be visible from the intranet. Changes to the host PC are restricted by corporate policy. In the virtual network, no domain controller exists. All virtual machines are member of the same workgroup. Running the virtual network as NAT is possible. Port forwarding might be used if it does not conflict with ports used by the host PC. Looking for a solution, I found hints about using router or vpn software on the hosts, but without any details how to setup. (I found a similar question Sharing the network between 2 VMware hosts, but the answer was not sufficient for me.)

• Syncronization between folders MAC OS Lion

  I have an iMac at home and I use a Macbook pro for work. I also have a time capsule at home containing my main folder with my main files. I use it as a NAS besides the Time Machine backup tool. I have several personal files I need to be accessing both at home and at work. My wife, who works at home, uses sometimes the same .XLS files and .DOC files I might have used during my day at work, away from home. My question is: Is there a software, or tool that a I can use to sync my iMac and my MB Pro folders? Remembering that: There might be a chance that my wife and I have changed the same files during the day, so the files would have to be merged so none of the information added by either me or my wife would be lost. The software/tool that would be installed on the MB Pro would need to mount the Time Capsule volume so it could locate the main folder on it. It has to be done automatically when my MB is at home ( with a schedule option ); I have tested some softwares like synctwofolders and Chronosync but none fulfilled all my needs. The first couldn't mount the Time Capsule Volume and didn't have the many schedule options. I really liked Chronosync, but it doesn't merge the files. When it detects a conflict ( for instance: my wife changed a .DOC file on the iMAC and I changed the same file on the MB it asks you to choose which version you want to keep instead of allowing you simply to merge them ). I don't have much experience with automator or scripts but maybe you can give me a hand with that.

• Migrating to CF9: trouble getting JRun working with SSL

  I have a client on MX7 who wants to migrate to CF9. I have a dev environment for them on my WinXP machine where I've configured MX7 to run with JRun's built-in web server. I've had that working for a long time with both regular and SSL connections. I installed CF9 yesterday side-by-side with the existing MX7 install to start testing. The install was smooth and detected MX7, adjusted CF9's port numbers for no conflict, etc. Testing started well: MX7 over regular and SSL still worked and CF9 worked over regular HTTP. But I can't get CF9 to work with SSL. I installed a new certificate with keytool, FireFox (v3.6) complained about it being unsigned, I added it to the exception list, and now I get this: Secure Connection Failed An error occurred during a connection to localhost:9101. Peer reports it experienced an internal error. (Error code: ssl_error_internal_error_alert) I've been Googling that in all variations but can't find much help to get past this. I don't see any info in any log files either. • Installing OEM Windows Server 2008 under KVM

  Issue I have an HP server that came with an OEM copy of Windows Server 2008. I have installed CentOS 5.4 on the hardware and am trying to install Windows Server 2008 as a KVM guest. When I attempt to install Windows Server 2008 it complains that I am trying to install on unsupported hardware. This issue is caused because the hardware SMBIOS information is not being passed to the KVM guest. Background Before I go any further I want to state that what I am trying to do is within the license. HP offers a supported solution for VMWare but does not have an official solution for KVM. After much research the platform I am going to use is CentOS and KVM so please do not suggest other platforms. I emailed the KVM developers mailing list and was told that this is possible and was given the advice that: "You can dump SLIC table of your host bios and provide it to guest bios using -acpitable parameter." I used dmidecode and got the parameters that need to be passed, but I do not know where to pass the parameters into. Update Looks like CentOS 5.4 uses virt-install instead of qemu. Qemu is in the package manager and I was able to install it after uninstalling qemu-img (they conflict and qemu contains the packages in qemu-img). So now I know how to pass the acpitable parameters, but I am having trouble mapping what came out of dmidecode into -acpitable.

• KVM network bridge with two NICs

  Greetings, I'm trying to set up bridged networking with KVM and am getting nowhere. There are docs and tutorials on the subject, but they all seem to conflict or don't provide enough info. I was wondering if someone can give me a high-level overview of how to get this working. I can probably work out the details myself (configuring the interfaces, adding routes, etc), I just need help on the big picture: how everything is interconnected. I have a RHEL5 server with KVM installed and running. It has two physical NICs, eth0 and eth1 in the same VLAN. I would like to use eth1 for all traffic between the guests and the rest of the network and reserve eth0 for host management, guest migrations, etc if possible. I'm not picky about which one gets the default route, although it would be nice if we could make it eth0. All of the guests will have static IPs. I would prefer that when a new guest is added, the networking configuration only needs to be set from within the guest itself. Basically, I want this: eth0: all host traffic eth1: all guest traffic Open to any other suggestions if this isn't possible or will be kludgy/difficult. Pointers to existing documentation might not be helpful since I've already been though just about everything out there. Thanks for any help.

• Mustek 1200 CP driver SFC4.SYS bluescreens with BAD_POOL_HEADER

  I have Windows XP SP2. Recently it started bluescreening right after starting up with 'BAD_POOL_HEADER', 0x00000019 error caused by SFC4.SYS driver. After googling for a while I've found out that this is my Mustek's 1200 CP scanner driver. Booting in safe mode and uninstalling it solved the problem... And created another one: now I can't use my scanner. The weird thing is, that it has been working for a while on this PC without any problems. It all started suddenly, and I can't remember installing anything that might have affected it. Reverting to several earlier system restore points didn't help. I've tried re-installing it from the Mustek website, just in case if my copy got corrupted or infected by a virus, but it did not help - it still bluescreens. Also, I've installed Avast and scanned my PC - there were no viruses found. If anyone had such a problem before or has an idea what might have caused it, please help. ED: @Michael Todd: ...try installing on another PC... I've installed it on my friends PC. He has the same OS version, with the latest updates just like mine (he wasn't too happy, even after I've assured him that it is easy to fix by uninstalling that driver :] ). It worked fine - no bluescreens or whatsoever. So I think I've narrowed it down to either BIOS settings, or some wicked driver conflict. Next thing I'm going to try is to re-install XP, or install windows 7. I'm not too happy with a prospect of mucking about with BIOS settings...

• Windows Virtual Machines will not run

  I'm trying to setup a few virtual machines to use for testing websites in the various old versions of IE. I had Microsoft Virtual PC working on an older machine using XP mode and 2 other VHD's from Microsoft that allowed me to test in IE6-IE8. I've recently gotten a new work machine and am trying to set up the VMs again for testing, however nothing seems to be working. Both the old and the new system run Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate with AMD processors. I downloaded Virtual PC & XP mode from here http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx and go through the installation process. XP mode is installed, but when I try to run it it goes through the initial setup process only to fail when it is almost complete with the error "Cannot Complete Setup". (After googling I see that this might be a conflict with my processor) I download other VHD's from here http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx in order to get the other versions of IE and try to set those up in Virtual PC as well. I click on them to start the machine and both Windows 7 with IE8 and Windows Vista with IE7 just hang at a black screen. I try to use Virtual Box instead, and I get Windows XP with IE6 running, but I have no internet connection in the VM. I try all different settings and try to google the correct settings but nothing seems to work. When I load the VM, XP shows that its found new hardware but it needs the drivers. One of these pieces of hardware is the network adapter, but I can't connect to the internet to download the driver in the guest OS. VirtualBox tells me I need to install extensions in order for things to function properly. I go through the installation process in the guest OS and restart the VM, however now XP is asking for validation and I can't access the VM. I try installing the other 2 OS (Vista & 7) but I get a BSOD right after the startup screen appears and the VM restarts itself. I'm getting so frustrated trying to make this work, I would really appreciate any assistance on getting the VMs up and running or any alternatives for testing websites in Internet Explorer.

  So I've noticed that there are several recommendations on basic practices on Server Fault, but there doesn't seem to be a cohesive view as to how those recommendations would all fit together. So I thought I would lump these together as a kind of mental exercise to see what the "ServerFault Community IT Department" would look like if it were implemented. This would give a few things: it would make a reasonable wiki (in the true wiki spirit of many contributions), it would provide several links to well-vetted practices, and it would be kind of fun to see what the amalgamation would look like. • svn post-commit not performing

  ive been sitting on this for about 7 hours, and ive aged close to 7 years... ahhh, server admin does that to me. i have svn wired through apache2 with webdav in the usual manner (basically like http://www.howtoforge.com/setting-up-subversion-with-webdav-post-commit-hook-and-multiple-sites-on-jaunty-jackalope-ubuntu-9.04). ive had endless problems with this (i didnt on my previous ubuntu server install, although this is ubuntu 10.10): this happened, and was fixed like in the post: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2547400/how-do-you-fix-an-svn-409-conflict-error this looks like my issue, although its not my solution: http://serverfault.com/questions/135494/apache-svn-on-ubuntu-post-commit-hook-fails-silently-pre-commit-hook-permis my commit to svn works (finally). although the post-commit hook which is supposed to svn update the working copy of the repo on the server, doesn't work. the post-commit hook itself executes, and has sudo permissions (as in the setup url above. testing with whoami somelogfile.log or sudo whoami somelogfile.log shows www-data and root, respectively), although it wont perform the svn update (sudo svn update /var/www/gameServer /var/svn/gameServer.log). similar to the serverfault url above, when i perform the exact command it does update the working copy to the latest revision, just not through the post-commit hook. an age old question that is 90% of the time a permissions issue. but in pure frustration i chmod 777 lots of stuff not to mention the fact that www-data is in /etc/sudoer so it shouldnt even need that. im collapsing in front of the screen partly out of frustration and partly out of sleepiness. any direction would be appreciated.

• OpenVPN with MacOS X Client and same subnets in local and remote net.

  I have a homenetwork 192.168.1.0/24 with gteway 192.168.1.1 and a remote network with the same parameters. Now I want to create a OpenVPN tunnel between those networks. I have no problems with Windows, because Windows routes everything to 192.168.1.0/24 except 192.168.1.1 throught the tunnel. When I manually route a single IP like 192.168.1.16 over the tunnel gateway 192.168.6.6, this works. Q: How do I set up my routes in MacOS X for the same behaviour as on windows, to route everything except 192.168.1.1 through the tunnel, but leave the default gateway to be my local 192.168.1.1 ?

• Tips and Suggestions IP Address Re-Addressing?

  Hello serverfault Universe, My ever evolving and expanding local area network is currently using a class-C address. My network consists of multiple subnets depending on site/location. 192.168.1.x is site HQ 192.168.5.x is secondary site 192.168.10.x is so on and so forth. Long story short - I have inherited this network design from the previous admin who has left the company which started off with a dozen people and now has just over 300 full time/part time employees. We do not yet have client VPN access; but we do have site to site VPN setup. My question is, in preparation for outside client access to my network via Cisco ASA, I would like to re-address the HQ site because I understand a 192.168.1.x or 192.168.0.x are not very good choices for a company subnet - it may conflict with a home user's LAN when connecting to my LAN, I believe? Through your experience, does anyone out there have any suggestions and tips on how I can proceed with re-addressing my subnets. If I designed this network I would have gone with a 10.0.0.0 (mask 255.255.255.0) so I am leaning towards changing it to fit. Thank you.

• Tracking down source of duplicate email messages in Outlook / Exchange environment

  I have a few users, who are also Blackberry users, that occasionally have duplicate emails generated from their "mailbox". I put mailbox in quotes because I'm not exactly sure where the duplicates are created. One of these users is in non-cached mode, and the other is in cached mode, and both experience the problem. In fact, the non-cached mode user was originally experiencing the problem while in cached mode, and I made the switch a few weeks ago to attempt to solve the problem. Today I discovered the issue still exists. I'm not sure if the fact that they are blackberry users could be causing the problem at all. I don't see how, but felt I should mention it anyway. Does anyone have ideas on how I might begin to troubleshoot this? I can see in the non-cached user's mailbox "Sent Items" that the message was sent only once. I confirmed the message does not state that there was a conflict and in fact that makes sense because they are in non-cached mode. On the server, we have a mail journaling feature turned on for our third-party mail archiving system, and I can see that that system sees two sent messages. And likewise, the recipient does in fact have two messages in their inbox with consecutive message IDs ([email protected]) and ([email protected]). It would seem to me that the duplicates are generated on the client, but is there a way to tell for sure?

My current algorithm is using recursion. but I am wondering how to do it in non recursive way to make it more efficient. it is programmed in c# using graphics to draw on a bitmap. • Attempting to set up xampp and zend server on the same machine

  I am attempting to set up the zend server and xampp on the same machine but I am running into problems. I came across documentation on the zend site that said you cannot do this. However the folks over at apachefriends said you can. I have since discovered that I can run some of the zendframework examples within xampp by downloading the zendframework2 library and the skeleton app from git and I am doing this right now. However, I would like to know how to set them both up without having any conflicts both for the apache2 server and phpmyadmin. (One of the frustrating things is trying to load phpmyadmin in the deployment dialog by using the zpk tool in Zend). What I did in trying to set up both servers on windows 7 is as follows: First I have tried to set up the httpd conf files separately for each server, xampp running on port 8082 , and zend running on port 8088. At the time xampp would work, but zend server would not. This is after setting up the virtual host files separately for each server. Question 1: Where are the zend server error logs? Earlier, I was able to get both of them running configuring the xampp server httpd-conf file alone, however, I experienced problems with phpmyadmin even after configuring phpmyadmin on xampp to work on a different port other than 3306. Second question here: how to set up the two mysql phpmyadmin instances so they do not conflict with each other? • Sending mail through local MTA while domain MX records point to Google Apps

  My domain's email is managed by Google Apps, so that domain users get Gmail and Calendar, etc. But I also want to be able to send applicative notifications to users outside the domain via email (e.g. "some commented on your post", and so on). However, if I try to send email through code I get blocked by Gmail after a few emails. I send marketing email through MailChimp, to minimize the risk of appearing as spam to my users (one-click unsubscribe, etc.). But I can't send applicative message in this way. I want to install a local MTA (my server runs Ubuntu), but I'm not sure what anti-spam measures I need to implement so that receiving MTAs don't think it's a spam server. What's stopping anyone from setting up a mail server and sending emails using my domain name? AFAIK it's the DNS records that show the MTA's address actually belongs to the domain. But my understanding of this is rather superficial, so someone please correct me if I'm wrong. But what sort of DNS configuration do I need to put in place so that I don't get blacklisted (assuming I don't actually spam anyone)? The MX records already point to Google, and I'd like to keep it this way. So do I just need to define an A record for my internal mail server? Should it show email as coming from a sub-domain, so as not to conflict with the bare domain being managed by google? Edit: Does the following SPF record make sense if I want email from my domain name to be sent by either google's servers or any server with a dns name ending with mydomain.com? "v=spf1 ptr mx:google.com mx:googlemail.com ~all" How should I set up reverse DNS for my server? If I have an A record that points mailsender.mydomain.com to my MTA's ip address, does it mean that reverse lookup will only allow emails sent from [email protected]?

• VMWare steals IP addresses

  I'm having a peculiar problem, that I think I have narrowed down to VMware. For the past one year, every once in a while we lose internet connection and not all users (about 10 users) go down at the same time, its usually one-by-one. First someone will call me and say "Internet is down" and then we would go reset the router and modem and switch and it would be working again for a while, then go down again without any pattern or replicatable sequence. We'd go repeat the steps again to get everyone in the office running again. We called our Internet Service Provider and they constantly say, We see your modem and we see your router and from thier end everything is OK. we replaced our router and switch and modem, twice! Last friday, it dawned upon me, that everytime we turn on a VMware machine, this sequence of taking everyone down starts, which also explains the message that my users get for "IP Conflict Found" So we do alot of VMware testing and lo and behold, it takes my Internet down. My Yahoo and Gtalk would continue working but www is down when the VMware machines are started. I do use bridged networking to all the VMware machines, but I dont know what else to set it at. now, sorry for this long rambling but anyone have any clue on how to stop this? thanks IA

• Updating Samba From RPMs

  My Red Hat Enterprise Edition 4 comes with Samba Version 3.0.10, which does not have support for the "inherit owner" attribute that is essential in implementing a Deny-Delete Write Once Read Many share (for examples, search google for a-shared-drop-box-using-samba). (BTW, if any body knows an alternative way to do it without updating samba, I'm all ears!) I am not all that comfortable building from source, and after hours of googling (no, I do not have a red hat subscription, so I cannot just run the up2date command), I found a whole bunch of rpms on http://ftp.sernet.de/pub/samba/tested/rhel/4/i386/ (Samba 3.2.15 for RHEL 4)... Next, I tried updating them with the rpm -U --nodeps command, but I got file conflict errors. So I went ahead and overwrote everything (or so I thought) by using the rpm's --force option. But no good has come of all that. /usr/sbin/smbd -V still returns the old version. As of now, rpm -qa | grep samba returns, samba3-client-3.2.15-40.el4 samba-3.0.10-1.4E.2 samba-client-3.0.10-1.4E.2 system-config-samba-1.2.21-1 samba3-3.2.15-40.el4 samba-common-3.0.10-1.4E.2 samba3-winbind-3.2.15-40.el4 I cannot remove the older ones because samba-common >= 3.0.8-0.pre1.3 is needed by (installed) gnome-vfs2-smb-2.8.2-8.2.x86_64 libsmbclient.so.0()(64bit) is needed by (installed) kdebase-3.3.1-5.8.x86_64 libsmbclient.so.0()(64bit) is needed by (installed) gnome-vfs2-smb-2.8.2-8.2.x86_64 Now thats a whole bunch of dependencies that I dare not touch :) Any and all pointer are welcome at this stage.   CentOS 5.x The short version: Is there a way to change the encoding format for an existing CSR "Country Code" field from UTF8 to Printable String? The long version: I've got a CSR generated from a product using standard java security providers (jsse/jce). Some of the information in the CSR uses UTF8 Strings (which I understand is the preferred encoding requirement as of December 31, 2003 - RF 3280). The certificate authority I'm submitting the CSR to explicitly requires the Country Code to be specified as a PrintableString. My CSR has it listed as a UTF8 string. I went back to the latest RFC - http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc5280.txt. It seems to conflict specifically on countryName. Here's where it gets a little messy... The countryName is part of the relative DN. The relative DN is defined to be of type DirectoryString, which is defined as a choice of teletexString, printableString, universalString, utf8String, or bmpString. It also more specifically defines countryName as being either alpha (upper bound 2 bytes) or numeric (upper bound 3 bytes). Furthermore, in the appendix, it refers to the X520countryName, which is limited to be only a PrintableString of size 2. So, it is clear why it doesn't work. It appears that the certificate authority and Sun/Java do not agree on their interpretation of the requirements for the countryName. Is there anything I can do to modify the CSR to be compatible with the CA?

• How to make project auto-estimate duration based on work?

  This one has bothered me for a long while. I like to do estimates thinking on how much time a certain task will take (I'm in TI business), so, let's say, it takes 12 hours to build a program. Now, let's say I tell Project that my beginning date is today. If I allocate one resource to this task, it means that the task will last 1,5 days, implying that it will end tomorrow. But right now, that is not what it's doing. I say that the task will take 1 hour, and when I add a resource to it, it allocate the resource at [13%] basis, which means that the duration is still fixed... project is trying to make the task last for a day. I have, on many occasions, accomplished this. What I do is build a plan based on these rough estimates for effort, then I allocate tasks to resources. Times conflict, so I level resources and then Project magically tells me how long, in days, will it take. But every time I have to start estimating again, I end up having trouble on how to make project work like that.

  I botched a transfer of a VM from one harddisk to the other. Now I'm left with the base vdi and a whole bunch of snapshots. My steps Copied old VM directory over to new HDD Deleted old VM and added new VM using using Machine-add and providing the old XML file Couldn't add base vdi file due to conflict so changed the UUID of base vdi with VBOXMANGE.EXE internalcommands sethduuid <path/to/vdi> Attempt to rollback to a snapshot, but it seems the VM is looking for the snapshots on the old HDD (which is formatted and gone) This is the error (networked is the name): Failed to restore the snapshot networked of the virtual machine lfs. Could not open the medium 'H:\vm\ft.vdi'. VD: error VERR_PATH_NOT_FOUND opening image file 'H:\vm\ft.vdi' (VERR_PATH_NOT_FOUND). Result Code: E_FAIL (0x80004005) Component: Medium Interface: IMedium {53f9cc0c-e0fd-40a5-a404-a7a5272082cd} The old HDD was drive H: the new one is drive N: How can I modify the snapshots/VM to look in N:\vm\ft.vdi for the base vdi? I've already set the default settings in VirtualBox in general (default vm/vm snapshot location). Or if not that how can I merge the old snap shot with the base vdi given that the only things that have changed is the base vdi's UUID?
