• After installing Windows 7, I can no longer get to Debian 6 (dual boot)

  I had Debian 6 on my machine (Dell Vostro 260) and used GParted to shrink the partition. I then tried installing Windows 7 on that partition. After Windows 7 installed, I could not choose which OS to run. It would just boot into Windows. I ran GParted again, and saw that Windows created another partition, labeled "System Reserved". That partition had the boot flag set. I tried moving the boot flag to other partitions, including my Debian partition and one with a file system "linux-swap". No option would actually load an OS or anything except for the Windows partition, which is not what I want. Is it worth it to try to fix this installation, or should I start over. I have all my data backed up, so I can easily install from scratch if I need to. If I do start from scratch, which OS should I install first? And then, how do I set up the partitions to install the other OS? Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks for your help.

  I have a PC with linux-mint installed on it. I wanted to install win-7 along-side, for some reasones. what I have done is: create a bootable USB-stick with Ubontu ios. restarted the computer, this time with Ubuntu (running from my disk-on-key). created a partition on the main HD using GPart. formated the partition to NTFS. restarted the computer, this time through the installation CD for win-7. installed win-7 with normal settings. that all worked, and I'm writing this through win-7. the thing is - when I boot my system, I don't get to choose what OS to run. I checked the settings in msconfig, and in boot label it has just win-7. how can I boot linux?

• Dual Monitor + Virtual Desktop software (plus for cube)

  I've recently purchased another monitor, my first one being a TV and being much larger. I now sit at a desk and use my shiny new 24" LED more often, but I like to extend the desktop into the TV. The problem presented with this is to save power and the longevity of my 47" VIZIO, I try to keep it off when possible. What I'm seeking sounds very simple - If any of you have ever used Compiz or Deskspace (Yod'm) - You'll know what im referring to when I talk about a "cube." The most important functionality I'm looking for is the ability to scroll desktop contents between both displays and virtual desktops. Deskspace does and excellent job of presenting an attractive cube, but it creates a separate cube and virtual desktop space for the second extended monitor (now the TV) - Again, what I'm looking to do is scroll between virtual desktops, by passing through both monitors. The net effect of this functionality would allow me to scroll the contents of the extended monitor to the first monitor should a window get caught there without having to turn on the TV. So imagine the horizontal portion of a cube as being actual real monitors - is there anything that allows one to rotate desktops between displays?

  A dual interface in COM is one that is able to be accessed via a DispInterface or via VTable methods. Now can someone tell me what is exactly what the difference is between the two methods? I thought that a VTable is a virtual table which holds the pointers to the different functions when implementing a class hierarchy which has virtual functions that can be overridden in child classes. However I do not see how this is related to a dual interface in COM?

• Radeon 6950 - Garbling of text and graphics in certain Windows only

  This morning I noticed the text in Gmail (in Firefox 4) looked a little funny (kind of thin, maybe some color fringing). I went to work and thought it might be some ClearType issue or something with the way Direct way that FF4 draws to the screen. When I came back from work (I left the computer on), the problem was much worse - way beyond ClearType nit-picking. The text was barely readable. I opened Chrome and there was no such problem. It seems like only Windows that use hardware acceleration are garbled, and ones that use GDI are not. But, I fired up Dragon Age and didn't notice any problems (I only really looked at the main menu though). Here is a link to a screen shot that illustrates the problem. Notice how the Windows Live Mesh window is completely unreadable, the text in Firefox 4 (left) is pretty bad, while Chrome, the Windows Control Panel, and the task bar are perfectly fine. The fact that the problem shows up in screen shots and that it only happens in certain Windows makes me confident that the problem cannot be with the monitor or DVI cable. I am using the AMD Radeon drivers from 4/27/11. The card I have (MSI Frozr II) came with a slight overclock (810Mhz) out of the box, but it looks like when I'm on the Windows desktop it's not running at full clock (CCC reports 450Mhz). Still, I underclocked it to the stock reference clock (800Mhz) and it made no difference. The idle temperature according to Afterburner is 42-44 Celsius, which seems a tad high but not enough to cause a problem - it's cold to the touch if I open up the machine. What the heck could be causing this? The problem varies in intensity. As we speak I'm in Firefox and things look better than they did earlier - it'll probably get worse again soon. • Graphics Artifacts/ Texture Flickering

  Hey I been having some problems with artifacts in games. Sometimes textures flicker. Artifacts of various shapes and sizes show up usually after a couple games of dota 2. I built my computer almost exactly one month ago and it has been doing this pretty much from the start except before the artifacts I believe just flashed on screen fast enough to where I couldn't tell what it was but I still noticed. In dota I've seen green triangular artifacts among other things. I've tried running Furmark for a while but even though it pushes the gpu much harder than dota 2, there are still no artifacts. It maxes in furmark at about 60C and running every game I've tried on it at 40C. CPU and system temp don't usually get higher than 40C either. These are my system specs: Gigabyte Z68 Intel Motherboard 16 GB Gskill Ripjaws SDRAM DDR3 Sapphire Radeon HD 7770 GHz edition Intel Core i5-2500k (with built in gpu) Corsair 750 Watt PSU windows 7-64 bit I have the latest drivers for everything. What should I do about this? Try to RMA my graphics card? Are there other things that could be causing this?

  The validations I know of are: Checksum the whole card number should add up to zero. (range is 0-9) Check the first digit(s) against the card type Check the length against the card type Check the CCV length against the card type (I think all the major types are 3 anyway) Of course make sure it is accepted card type as well as non expired. Are there any other validations :) (I expect many folks did not know about all of these) The reason I ask is because I overheard there was one to checksum number against expiration or CCV.. I just wanted to check.

My computer satisfied all the minimum system requirements it required. After installing the Card in PCI Express Slot I started the computer. But it now hangs at the POST screen i.e.(the first screen when the PC loads). It hangs at Checking NVRAM. I had checked the graphic card on other PC and its works perfectly. So I think there's no problem in the Graphic card. If I remove my graphic card and run my PC with built in Graphic card, my PC works and doesn't hang. So, what can be the problem? • How to boot Chromebook from SD card without entering developer mode?

  I have a question. Is it at all possible to install Ubuntu or Chrubuntu onto a SD Card and then boot a chromebook from said SD card? I know this is easily possible, but the chromebook in question belongs to my school, so I cannot enter developer mode, because that would void the license agreement.   I have Ubuntu 13.10 and Windows 7 installed in dual boot on a single SSD. In addition they share an NTFS partition where I put all my data and documents. What is the optimal way to mount this NTFS partition in /etc/fstab (considering performance and minimizing wear of the SSD)? Similar questions have been asked, but I could not find answers to this particular scenario. As I understand it, the mount option 'discard' is not supported for NTFS and so should not be used (although it is recommended here). Another often quoted mount option is 'noatime'. I use it for my ext4 partitions. Does it apply to NTFS? My current /etc/fstab line is: UUID=XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX /dos ntfs defaults,nls=utf8,uid=1000,gid=1000 0 0

• Why does grub selection no longer appear on my dual-boot system?

  I had installed a Ubuntu 12.04 and Fedora 17 dual boot on my system. During the installation I had installed Ubuntu first and Fedora later. Fedora had recognized Ubuntu and added it to the GRUB OS selection list. Afterwards I installed some routine updates on my Ubuntu and after that I am just not able to see the GRUB OS selection anymore when I boot. I am unable to understand what happened, both Fedora and Ubuntu use GRUB 2.0. Also it seems Ubuntu is not able to recognize other existing linux operating systems; because in the beginning I had installed Fedora first and Ubuntu later, but Ubuntu did not recognize Fedora at all, while Fedora recognized Ubuntu when I installed the other way round.

Can this even be done realtime in a game, or are they pre-rendered animations?

  I installed Ubuntu on a old Windows XP computer using Dual Boot, i have no XP Cd and desperately need to remove it! EasyBCD does not work on windows XP, iF I just delete the Ubuntu partition all hell breaks loose and i have to reinstall ubuntu to get my XP back. Please help me i am only 12 and i have made a stupid error on my mum and dads computer and will get into serious trouble if i dont fix it soon!. Extra Information: I use the gnu boot loader to choose my operating system, but my mum and dad need my help to open a word document, they have only just grasped double clicking! I installed it off a cd that i made, the computer is 64-bit AMD Athlon with one 160gb hard drive, 512mb ram and a Sis mirage2 128mb shared video card. Its a COMPAQ presario.

  I was wondering if there's a possibility to render a retro-pixel-like graphics from 3d model in real time? I'm talking about the Starfarer-like graphics. I know it's hand drawn, and it's 2d. But if I need a 3d objects with the same aesthetics? I'm currently working with Flash. But I don't need any ready-solutions, I just want to understand the principle from any other platform if there is one. So if anybody met anything like this I would appreciate your help. • Windows 7 won't boot? Tried Boot Repair (dual-boot)

  I downloaded Ubuntu and installed it so that my computer was dual boot. The first day, Ubuntu and Windows both worked great. Unfortunately, the next day, after messing around on Compiz Config Settings Manager to get the rotation cube, I tried booting into windows 7, and it wouldn't boot. It just goes to the screen where the Windows logo comes up and says Windows 7, and then reboots without even displaying an error message.   I have Ubuntu and Windows 7 installed and dual booting via Grub2. 99/100 times I will boot into Ubuntu. I want to speed up my time for booting into Ubuntu and really the Grub2 prompt is the part that adds the most time. So, I want to disable the prompt. I would prefer to be able to set it up so I can hold shift or similar at boot if I wish to show it. But I don't mind editing a config file or similar in Ubuntu to show it again if need be.   I've just tried to install ubuntu 12.04 dual boot OS with Windows 7 and it finished installing in ubuntu. However, it said that the bootloader "grub.." failed to install. The same exact problem here I receive the error 'grub-install /dev/sda failed' while attempting to install Ubuntu as the computer's only OS. . When I tried to restart my computer, it went to the hp screen since my computer is a dv6 hp laptop and then it goes into this black screen with no words or any buttons will work. There is just a blinking underscore that seems like it'll allow me to type but makes error sounds when I type. Is this because I possibly partitioned my memory incorrectly? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm very desperate. ANY HELP would be great. Thanks.

• In setting up dual Boot with Windows XP and Ubuntu, which OS do I install first?

  I'd like to install both Ubuntu 12.04 and Windows XP on a Dell laptop, and I was thinking about using a dual boot structure, and using the bulk of my hard drive as empty hard drive space to share files between the two operating systems (so choice of file system type is very important in this set-up). The kind of partitioning structure I would like to use is Partition 1 - Ubuntu 12.04 (root) (20GB) Partition 2 - Ubuntu /home (20GB) Partition 3 : Free Space (560GB) Partition 4 : Windows XP (35GB) Partition 5 : SWAP (3GB) (Total Hardrive Capacity is ~640GB) My question is; what is the best way to go about setting up this kind this system? Should I install Windows XP first and setup the partitions, and then install Ubuntu which I believe will install the GRUB bootloader for OS booting choice or Do I install Ubuntu first, setting up the available partitions and then perform a WIndows install? Please let me know if there is anything in this setup that I have left out and should know about, including things related to setting particular partitions as logical or primary, and whether the boot partition and the filesystem partition should actually be two separate partitions.

• jQuery and jQuery UI (Dual Licensing)

  OK I have read many posts regarding Dual Licensing using MIT and GPL licenses. But Im curious still, as the wording seems to be inclusive. Many of the Dual Licenses state that the software is licensed using "MIT AND GPL". The "AND" is what confuses me. It seems to me that the word "AND" in the terms, means you will be licensing the product using both licenses. Most of the posts, here on stackoverflow, say you can license the software using one "OR" the other. JQuery specifically states "OR", whereas JQuery UI specifically States "AND". Another Instance of the "AND" would be JQGrid. Im not a lawyer but, it seems to me that a legal interpretation of this would state that use of the software would mean that your using the software under both licenses. Has anyone who has contacted a lawyer gotten clarification or a definitive answer as to what is true? Can you use Dual licensed software products that state "AND" in the terms of agreement under either license?
