    I am a new programmer, and I started in C and am now starting to enjoy JavaScript and a tiny bit of PHP more. Lately I've heard the terms 'private' and 'public' functions a lot. Could anybody give an explanation of the both and how they are of use to a programmer? And I'm probably totally wrong here... but is a (function(){}) in javascript a private function?

  • Silverlight 4: Binding to a calculation of control properties

    What I would like to do is pretty simple. Given textboxes for ItemPrice, Tax and Total, I need the text value for Total to be bound to ItemPrice + Tax and the Tax value to display ItemPrice * taxRate. Could someone offer a brief explanation as to how this would be accomplished or point me to an appropriate example? I see property binding examples all over the place, but none that show binding to a calculation of the properties of two controls.

  • UnicodeDecodeError when redirecting to file

    Hi, I run this snippet twice, in the ubuntu terminal, (encoding set to utf-8) once with ./test.py and then with ./test.py >out.txt: uni = u"\u001A\u0BC3\u1451\U0001D10C" print uni Without redirection it prints garbage. With redirection I get a UnicodeDecodeError. Can someone explain why I get the error only in the second case, or even better give a detailed explanation of what's going on behind the curtain in both cases?

    Hi, I've seen in (Apple) sample code two types of ways of allocation memory, and am not sure I understand the difference and resulting behavior. // FAILS NSMutableArray *anArray = [NSMutableArray array]; [anArray release]; // WORKS NSMutableArray *anArray1 = [[NSMutableArray alloc] init]; [anArray release]; By "FAILS" I mean I get crashes/runtime warnings etc., and not always as soon as I call the release...   • Drawing performance in Java 6 updates 19,20 versus Java 6 update 3 ?

    I'm getting twice the frame rate with the earlier Java 6 u 3, than with the new ones. Very weird. Can anyone give some explanation? On Core 2 Duo 1.83ghz, integrated video (only one core is used) - 1500 (older java) vs 700 fps On Athlon 64 3500+, discrete video - 120 (older java) vs 55 fps The app is a simple game with a moving rectangle. I'm using Graphics2D to draw from a loop.

  • What is the XML spec for importing into Microsoft Project?

    From our existing, internal tracking system I would like to create an XML export that I can then bring into Microsoft Project 2007 to further display and manipulation. I've been unable to find a straightforward explanation of how the XML should look for this kind of import. I want to be able to create dependencies, assign resources, etc. The Excel/CSV imports don't appear to offer all these capabilities so I think XML is the better way...if I could just get a spec for it.

  • Why can't the server get the client MAC address, like the client IP?

    I know that all MAC addresses that the pocket goes through are in the pocket. This is because that each pocket that goes, should also be returned. So, if the router of the server know about the mac address of the client (all of them), why the server page (like aspx) cannot have this information? Please, give an explanation.   • Is it possible to capture audio output and apply effects to it?

    Using .NET and DirectSound I want to be able to take all output sound that is coming from my audio device and apply effects to it. I've had a quick look at the docs on MSDN and there doesn't seem to be any explanation as to how to do something like this. I've read elsewhere that you'd be better off writing a driver to sit in front of your real audio driver and have that do whatever you want with the sound. Any ideas anyone to push me in the right direction?

    Is it just me, or does expanding the list of databases in SQL Server 2008 Management Studio take significantly more time than expanding the list of databases in SQL Server 2005 Management Studio? If it isn't just me, is there an explanation for this behavior? Whatever it is doing in the background that makes it take longer, can we turn that off? Is it configurable? I know, it seems trivial, but I am perpetually being surprised at how long this takes.
