  • How do I preserve ownership permissions when copying to an external volume?

    - by Yitzchak
When I upgrade or reinstall linux I backup my home folder by running sudo cp -pr /home/users/yitzchak /media/externalHDD/backups. When I do this I get errors saying that permissions could not be preserved and when I copy the folder back onto my local disk I see that ownership has been changed to root and I have to chown all of them back, which has to be done manually piecemeal because not all files have the same group. Is there any way around that?

But when i set the filterpath in FileDialog, it opens (in linux) only the /home level not entering into the user home dir. This is the source code: FileDialog dialog = new FileDialog(shell); dialog.setText("Choose a certificate"); String platform = SWT.getPlatform(); String homefolder = System.getProperty("user.home"); dialog.setFilterPath(homefolder); Any idea? • Batch file to map a drive when the folder name contains spaces

    - by Santiago
I am trying to map a drive using a batch file. I have tried: net use m: \Server01\myfolder /USER:mynetwork\Administrator "Mypassword" /persistent:yes It works fine. The problem comes when I try to map a folder with spaces on its name: net use m: \Server01\my folder /USER:mynetwork\Administrator "Mypassword" /persistent:yes I have tried using quotes, using myfold~1 but nothing works. An easy way would be renaming the folder but I have it mapped in more than 300 workstations so is not a very good idea. PLEASE HELP!!!

  • Get user profile size in vbscript

    - by Cameron
Hello, I am trying to get the size of a user's local profile using VBScript. I know the directory of the profile (typically "C:\Users\blah"). The following code does not work for most profiles (Permission Denied error 800A0046): Dim folder Dim fso Set fso = WScript.CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject") Set folder = fso.GetFolder("C:\Users\blah") MsgBox folder.Size ' Error occurs here Is there another way to do this? UPDATE: I did some deeper digging and it turns out that the Permission Denied error occurs if permission is denied to some subfolders or files of the directory whose size I wish to get. In the case of user profiles, there's always a few system files that even the Administrator group does not have permission to access. To get around this, I wrote a function that tries to get the folder size the normal way (above), then, if the error occurs, it recurses into the subdirectories of the folder, ignoring folder sizes that are permission denied (but not the rest of the folders). Dim fso Set fso = WScript.CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject") Function getFolderSize(folderName) On Error Resume Next Dim folder Dim subfolder Dim size Dim hasSubfolders size = 0 hasSubfolders = False Set folder = fso.GetFolder(folderName) ' Try the non-recursive way first (potentially faster?) Err.Clear size = folder.Size If Err.Number <> 0 then ' Did not work; do recursive way: For Each subfolder in folder.SubFolders size = size + getFolderSize(subfolder.Path) hasSubfolders = True Next If not hasSubfolders then size = folder.Size End If End If getFolderSize = size Set folder = Nothing ' Just in case End Function

  • How should I fix problems with file permissions while restoring from Time Machine?

    - by Andrew Grimm
While restoring files from a Time Machine backup, I got the error message "The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access some of the items." because of problems with files in one folder. What's the safest way to deal with this? The folder in question has permissions like: Andrew-Grimms-MacBook-Pro:kmer agrimm$ pwd /Volumes/Time Machine Backups/Backups.backupdb/Andrew Grimm’s MacBook Pro/2010-12-09-224309/Macintosh HD/Users/agrimm/ruby/kmer Andrew-Grimms-MacBook-Pro:kmer agrimm$ ls -ltra total 6156896 drwxrwxrwx@ 19 agrimm staff 680 18 Jan 2008 Saccharomyces_cerevisiae -r--------@ 1 agrimm staff 60221852 4 Aug 2009 hs_ref_GRCh37_chrY.fa -r--------@ 1 agrimm staff 157488804 4 Aug 2009 hs_ref_GRCh37_chrX.fa (snip a few files) -r--------@ 1 agrimm staff 676063 27 Oct 2009 NC_001143.fna -rw-r--r--@ 1 agrimm staff 6148 23 Mar 2010 .DS_Store drwxr-xr-x@ 3 agrimm staff 1530 23 Mar 2010 . drwxr-xr-x@ 30 agrimm staff 1054 20 Nov 14:43 .. Is it ok to do sudo chmod, or is there a safer approach? Background: Files within the original folder on my computer also had weird permissions - I suspect I may have used sudo to copy some files from a thumbdrive onto my computer.

  • Windows batch - loop over folder string and parse out last folder name

    - by Tim Peel
Hi, I need to grab the folder name of a currently executing batch file. I have been trying to loop over the current directory using the following syntax (which is wrong at present): set mydir = %~p0 for /F "delims=\" %i IN (%mydir%) DO @echo %i Couple of issues in that I cannot seem to pass the 'mydir' variable value in as the search string. It only seems to work if I pass in commands; I have the syntax wrong and cannot work out why. My thinking was to loop over the folder string with a '\' delimiter but this is causing problems too. If I set a variable on each loop then the last value set will be the current folder name. For example, given the following path: C:\Folder1\Folder2\Folder3\Archive.bat I would expect to parse out the value 'Folder3'. I need to parse that value out as its name will be part of another folder I am going to create further down in the batch file. Many thanks if anyone can help. I may be barking up the wrong tree completely so any other approaches would be greatly received also. Tim

  • How can I change the file name of the Program Files (x86) folder?

    - by Madrauk
Let me stop you before the "you shouldn't do that" and "you will corrupt your file paths". I know what I'm doing, but I'll give you the story to convince you. Basically, my hard drive is failing to the point where programs installed on it are not responding consistently. So, in preparation for my replacement, I'm moving as many files as possible to my secondary because the new drive will be smaller (it's an emergency I can't buy a fancy expensive new drive) and so I can actually use my computer until the new drive comes in. The basic idea behind what I'm doing is I've copied the contents of the Program Files x86 folder to another spot on my other drive, and I want to replace the original folder in the C drive with a symbolic link that points to the other drive, so the programs can run from that drive and be fine but it will save space on my C drive and simplify the moving process when the new one comes in. To do that, I need to rename the program files folder, make the symbolic link, hopefully delete the program files folder, then restart my computer so all the programs are running properly and I can confirm it works. Now that I've told you why, can anyone help me out?

  • Batch file that returns folder size

    - by Paul Wall
Hi, I'm having space issues on my Vista machine and need to figure out what's taking up so much space. I would like to write a simple batch file that returns all folders under C: and the size of each folder. The dir command doesn't appear to return folder size. Unfortunately we don't have admin rights and can't install a third party application and we have other users in our group that also need this information. Thanks...

  • Specify build folder for iphone application

    - by Martin KS
I've written an app that uses some of the user's camera roll images, and while it does so it stores them in the application root directory. The problem I have is that whenever I re-compile my application it changes the folder to which the application is installed. Is there any way I can specify which folder it should build to, so that any path information stored during it's last run will still be valid?

  • Share Folders & Files Between Vista and XP Machines

    - by Mysticgeek
Since Microsoft has three operating systems in use, chances are you’ll find yourself needing to share files between XP, Vista, Windows 7, or some combination of the three. Here we take a look at sharing between a Vista and XP on your home network. Share Without Password Protected Sharing If you’re not worried about who’s accessing the files and folders, the easiest method is to disable Password Protected Sharing. So on the Vista machine open Network and Sharing Center. Under Sharing and Discovery make sure Network Discovery, File Sharing, and, Public Folder Sharing are turned on. Also turn off Password Protected Sharing… Now go into the Vista Public folder, located in C:\Users\Public, and add what you want to share or create a new folder. In this example we created a new folder called XP_Share and added some files to it. On the XP machine go into My Network Places and under Network Tasks click on View Workgroup Computers. Now you’ll see all of the computers on your network which should be part of the same Workgroup. Here we need to double-click on the Vista computer. And there we go…no password to enter so we can access the XP_Share folder or anything else that is located in the Public folder. Share with Password Protected Sharing If you want to keep Password Protected Sharing turned on, then we need to do things a little different. When it’s turned on and you try to access the Vista machine from XP, you’re prompted for a password, and no matter what you think the credentials are, you can’t get access…very annoying. So what we need to do is add the XP Machine as a user. Right-click on Computer from the Start Menu or desktop icon and select Manage from the context menu. The Computer Management screen opens up and you want to expand Local Users and Groups, then the Users folder. Then right-click any open area an select New User. Now create a new user name and password, you can also fill in the other fields if you want. Then make sure to uncheck User must change password at next logon and check the box next to Password never expires. Click the Create button and close out of the New User screen. You’ll then see the new user we created in the list and you can close out of the Computer Management window. Now back on the XP computer when you double-click on the Vista machine, your prompted to log in. Just type in the username and password you just created. Now you’ll have access to the Public folder contents. Set up Sharing on XP If you want to access a shared folder from the Vista computer located on the XP machine, it’s the same process in reverse. On the XP computer in Shared Documents, right-click on the folder you want to share and select Sharing and Security. Then select the radio button next to Share this folder and click Ok. Go into Computer Management and create a new user… Now from the Vista machine double click on the XP machine icon, enter the password, then access the folders and files you need. If you have multiple versions of Windows on your home network, you’ll now be able to access files and folders from each of them. • PowerShell Script to Enumerate SharePoint 2010 or 2013 Permissions and Active Directory Group Membership

    - by Brian T. Jackett
Originally posted on: http://geekswithblogs.net/bjackett/archive/2013/07/01/powershell-script-to-enumerate-sharepoint-2010-or-2013-permissions-and.aspx   In this post I will present a script to enumerate SharePoint 2010 or 2013 permissions across the entire farm down to the site (SPWeb) level.  As a bonus this script also recursively expands the membership of any Active Directory (AD) group including nested groups which you wouldn’t be able to find through the SharePoint UI.   History     Back in 2009 (over 4 years ago now) I published one my most read blog posts about enumerating SharePoint 2007 permissions.  I finally got around to updating that script to remove deprecated APIs, supporting the SharePoint 2010 commandlets, and fixing a few bugs.  There are 2 things that script did that I had to remove due to major architectural or procedural changes in the script. Indenting the XML output Ability to search for a specific user    I plan to add back the ability to search for a specific user but wanted to get this version published first.  As for indenting the XML that could be added but would take some effort.  If there is user demand for it (let me know in the comments or email me using the contact button at top of blog) I’ll move it up in priorities.    As a side note you may also notice that I’m not using the Active Directory commandlets.  This was a conscious decision since not all environments have them available.  Instead I’m relying on the older [ADSI] type accelerator and APIs.  It does add a significant amount of code to the script but it is necessary for compatibility.  Hopefully in a few years if I need to update again I can remove that legacy code.   Solution    Below is the script to enumerate SharePoint 2010 and 2013 permissions down to site level.  You can also download it from my SkyDrive account or my posting on the TechNet Script Center Repository. • How to change mount to grant user write permissions?

    - by nals
I am on TomatoUSB, and using the feature to have a NAS. The only way I can write to the Samba share is if I force root: [global] interfaces = 127.0.0.1, 192.168.1.1/24 bind interfaces only = no workgroup = WORKGROUP netbios name = TOMATO security = share wins support = yes name resolve order = wins lmhosts hosts bcast guest account = nobody [Public] path = /mnt/sda2 read only = no public = yes only guest = yes guest ok = yes browseable = yes comment = Network share force user = root writeable = yes I dont really like the idea having to use root to allow write access to my share. I have a samba account created already named nobody to allow access to the share. However every time I try to write I get access denied error. fstab: /dev/sda2 /mnt/sda2 vfat defaults 0 0 Further more every time I try to chmod 777 /tmp/mnt/sda2 the permissions are not changed, and no error is produced. They stay 755. drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Jun 4 01:49 sda2 Basically; how can I give the user nobody write permissions to my mount? dev name: /dev/sda2 dev mount: /tmp/mnt/sda2

  • File Permissions

    - by Simon Bateman
Some years/versions ago I found a script that took the Directory group/permissions of the current folder for NEW files Sub-Folders Currently when I import Photographs into 12.04 using Shotwell, I have to use terminal to issue: chgrp photography *.JPG. This enables other ubuntu members of 'photography' group to add these files to their version of Shotwell. I find modifying the Folder Properties/Permissions will NOT set the Group on 'Apply Permissions to Enclosed Files'

  • How to correctly setup home directories and permissions on a mounted partition.

    - by user36505
I'm setting up a Fedora 12 server. I have a root (/) partition where the boot (/boot) partition is mounted and then a separate partition (/files) for separating home directories and shares away from the other partitions. The filesystem mounts fine and users can be created to have home directories in /files/home/[user] just fine. However, when I log in as one of those users, I get an error saying "Cannot chdir in to /files/home/[user]: permission denied". If I create a user under the default /home using the same process, everything works fine. The same goes for when I try and browse a share in windows; I can see the shares, but cannot access them. The permissions and owners on /files and /files/home are the same as /home. When the user is created, the user directory owner and permissions are also the same. How can I set the /files partition up so that it can be used as a home directory and for samba sharing rather than using the root (/) partition? Thanks.
