  • Suggestions for designing large-scale Java webapp from the ground up

    Hi all, I'm about to start developing a large-scale system and I'm struggling with which direction to proceed. I've done plenty of Java web apps before and I have plenty of experience with servlet containers and GWT and some experience with Spring. The problem is most of my webapps have been thrown together just to be a proof of concept and what I'm struggling with is what set of frameworks to use. I need to have both a browser based application as well as a web service designed to support access from mobile devices (Android and iPhone for now). Ideally, I'd like to design this system in such a way that I don't end up rewriting all of my servlets for each client (browser and phone) although I don't mind having some small checks in there to properly format the data. In addition, although I'm the only developer now, that won't necessarily be the case down the road and I'd like to design something that scales well both with regards to traffic and number of developers (isn't just a nightmare to maintain). So where I am now is planning on using GWT to design the browser-based interface but I'm struggling with how to reuse that code with to present the interface (most likely xml) for the mobile devices. Using GWT RPC would, I think, make it relatively easy to do all of the AJAX in the browser, but might make generating xml for the mobile phones difficult. In addition, I like the idea of using something like Hibernate for persistence and Spring Security to secure the whole thing. Again, I'm not sure how well those will cooperate with GWT (I think Hibernate should be fine...) There's obviously a lot more to this than I've presented here, but I've tried to give you the 5-minute overview. I'm a bit stumped and was wondering if anybody in the community had any experience starting from this place. Does what I'm trying to do make sense? Is it realistic? I have no doubt I can make all of these frameworks speak the same language, I'm just wondering if it's worth my time to fight with them. Unfortunately I am new to AJAX and Web Services and have little idea how to setup unit tests in the browser environment.   • Firefox 29 - how do I delete history entries visited fewer than x times

    Context: I've been using my Firefox profile for a couple of years now. My history file has become huge, naturally. I got Firefox Sync set up between my main desktop PC and my laptop. HW configs: PC: i5-3450, 8 GB DDR3 RAM, Crucial M4 128 GB SSD laptop: Pentium SU4100, 4 GB DDR3 RAM, WD 5400 rpm HDD Accessing history entries when typing into the Awesome Bar on my desktop takes quite a long time despite the decent config, the laptop is even slower. The experience is quite unresponsive. I figured if I cleared the history up a little bit, I might avoid creating a new profile to speed things up. The question itself: to illustrate: Is there a way to delete all history entries that have been visited fewer than x (let's say 5) times and at the same time the recent visit is fewer than y (let's say 120) days old? afaik the history file is some kind of SQL database, but I'm not really sure how the data is saved, if there's a "safe way" to edit it and what the query to do what I need would look like. Thanks in advance for any help. I kept browsing through previous SuperUser questions to see if I could find relevant information. "In my Firefox profile directory, there is a filed named places.sqlite. Opening it with sqlite reveals (amongst others) the tables moz_places and moz_historyvisits. It seems that moz_historyvisits uses the primary of moz_places to refer to the URLs." As I'm unfamiliar with databases, I don't really understand the way the two tables mentioned in the quote are related. screenshot of a part of the tables I've noticed the visit_count is in a standard format, making it easy to work with. The last_visit_date looks encrypted to my naked eye, but I can't see in which way. Hope that helps, I'm at my wits' end.

  • Flex vs. jQuery vs. GWTvs./ Closre vs. Cappuccino vs. plain JS and HTML5?

    Hello, I'm creating my first web application and I'm really confused as to what technology to go for. My application needs to look serious (like an application), it doesn't need many colorful graphical interfaces. It only needs a toolbar, a tab bar, a split panel (preferably 3 columns), an easily-formatable text field, and a status bar. It will connect to a MySQL database through PHP (unless I go for GWT). Users will upload files. My evaluation of the options: Flex: Probably the easiest to develop but I'm pretty sure my application is something one would use on an iPad and with Flash's future on the iPad still unsure, I don't want to take the risk, otherwise Flex would've been my choice. jQuery: I've heard a lot about it and a lot of people recommend but I don't know how easy it is to use and how customizable the look of my app is. GWT: The problem with GWT is that it doesn't have many widgets. Another problem is that I'm gonna have to host the files in AppEngine's datastore and transfer them back and forth to a web server that will do operations on them (I need to process them) which adds more traffic and slows the process which worsens the user experience. Closure: It has a nice toolbar and a nice text field. I'm not sure how easy it is to use. Plus, I read an article that makes it sound really bad. Cappuccino: It has a very nice UI and it has a mac feel. I'm planning to give my application a mac feel anyway so this will save me a lot of theming. But if I go for this option I won't be able to make use of HTML5's new features (especially working offline). Plain JS and HTML5: This gives me the most flexibility but it is the hardest to work for. I'm sorry if this is subjective but I really need help with this.

    Hello i am trying to create a web application that will allow users to upload files online, i am using gwt while using hibernate for database communication, i am able to upload file to a server , and store them on the server. but what i want is to associate the files with a user. i want the user to be able to create folders and store a file in sub folders. my logic was to use the composite pattern to store folders and fileLocations with a user but i am am finding it difficult to implement this so i can show the files and folders within a gwt tree. what would be the best way to implement a hierarchy of folders and information of the location of a file so it could be displayed in a gwt tree? what i did have was a User would hold a reference to a root folder and then each sub folder could hold folders or fileLocations. i used the composite pattern to implement the file hierarchy, but when i want to display a the contents of a folder i need a for loop for each list. so i could a folder within a folder within a folder that would need 3 for loops to show the contents of my folders. What is the best way to implement this file management system. so what do you guys think?

  • jquery input-validation (number characters and decimal places).

    I have several javascript functions to validate the input data in textbox, so it will limit the user to type into the textbox a range of numbers (eg. from 0 to 500) an x amount of decimals (eg. 1 or 2 or 3 ....). I am having some issues with the javascript functions because they are three separate functions and the alerts get a bit mixed up. I was wondering if there is a jquery function that will make it neat, effective and simple. Thanks.

  • SqlServer2008 - Can I Alter a Scalar Function while it is referenced in many places

    We have a scalar function that returns a DateTime. It performs a couple of quick table selects to get its return value. This function is already in use throughout the database - in default constraints, stored procs, etc. I would like to change the implementation of the function (to remove the table hits and make it more efficient) but apparently I can't do that while it is referenced by other objects in the database. Will I actually need to update every object in the database that references it to remove the reference, update the function and then update all those objects to restore the reference to the function? Thanks for any insight you can give.

We all know the power of jQuery in UI manipulations. The latest news from Microsoft about jQuery being officially part of .Net developr’s toolkit will definitely make jQuery a preferred choice against other JavaScript libraries [See link: http://weblogs.asp.net/scottgu/archive/2008/09/28/jquery-and-microsoft.aspx]. But on the other hand, GWT is building a framework which could be used on client as well as on the sever side. It includes SDK (Java API libraries, compiler, and development server which allows to write client-side applications in Java and deploy them as JavaScript), Speed Tracer and plug-in for Eclipse. I m hearing a lot about AJAX, GWT, etc. So i wanted your opinion on which web technology/framework should i learn inorder to develop web applications for enterprise products. EDIT: Answers collated: Based on the answers : AJAX would be the best thing to start for learning fundamentals, then learn JQUERY. Any component based frame work that can complement ajax,jquery ?   • Installing my sdist from PyPI puts the files in the wrong places

My problem is that when I upload my Python package to PyPI, and then install it from there using pip, my app breaks because it installs my files into completely different locations than when I simply install the exact same package from a local sdist. Installing from the local sdist puts files on my system like this: /Python27/ Lib/ site-packages/ gloopy-0.1.alpha-py2.7.egg/ (egg and install info files) data/ (images and shader source) doc/ (html) examples/ (.py scripts that use the library) gloopy/ (source) This is much as I'd expect, and works fine (e.g. my source can find my data dir, because they lie next to each other, just like they do in development.) If I upload the same sdist to PyPI and then install it from there, using pip, then things look very different: /Python27/ data/ (images and shader source) doc/ (html) Lib/ site-packages/ gloopy-0.1.alpha-py2.7.egg/ (egg and install info files) gloopy/ (source files) examples/ (.py scripts that use the library) This doesn't work at all - my app can't find its data files, plus obviously it's a mess, polluting the top-level /python27 directory with all my junk. What am I doing wrong? How do I make the pip install behave like the local sdist install? Is that even what I should be trying to achieve? Details I have setuptools installed, and also distribute, and I'm calling distribute_setup.use_setuptools() WindowsXP, Python2.7. My development directory looks like this: /gloopy /data (image files and GLSL shader souce read at runtime) /doc (html files) /examples (some scripts to show off the library) /gloopy (the library itself) My MANIFEST.in mentions all the files I want to be included in the sdist, including everything in the data, examples and doc directories: recursive-include data *.* recursive-include examples *.py recursive-include doc/html *.html *.css *.js *.png include LICENSE.txt include TODO.txt My setup.py is quite verbose, but I guess the best thing is to include it here, right?     I am storing a list of numbers (as Double) in a text file, then reading them out again. When I read them out of the text file however, the numbers are placed into the text box as 1.59993499 for example, instead of 1.6. AssignFile(Pipe, 'EconomicData.data'); Reset(Pipe); For i := 1 to 15 Do ReadLn(Pipe, SavedValue[i]); CloseFile(Pipe); Edit1.Text := FloatToStr(SavedValue[1]); The text in Edit1.text, from the code above, would be 1.59999... instead of the 1.6 in the text file. How can i make it so the text box displays the original value (1.6)?

  • Access violations in strange places when using Windows file dialogs

    A long time ago I found out that I was getting access violations in my code due to the use of the Delphi Open File and/or Save File dialogs, which encapsulate the Windows dialogs. I asked some questions on a few forums and I was told that it may have been due to the way some programs add hooks to the shell system that result in DLLs getting injected in every process, some of which can cause havoc with a program. For the record, the programming environment I use is Delphi 6 Professional running on Windows XP 32-bit. At the time I got around it by not using Delphi's Dialog components and instead calling straight into comdlg32.dll. This solved the problem wonderfully. Today I was working with memory mapped files for the first time and sure enough, access violations started cropping up in weird parts of the code. I tried my comdlg32.dll direct calls and this time it didn't help. To isolate the problem as a test I created a list box with the exact same files I was using during testing. These are the exact same test files I was selecting from an Open File dialog and then launching my memory mapped file with. I set things up so that by clicking on a file in the list box, I would use that file in my memory mapped file test instead of calling into a comdlg32.dll dialog function to select a test file. Again, the access violatons vanished. To show you how dramatic a fix it was I went from experiencing an access violation within 1 to 3 trials to none at all. Unfortunately, it's going to bite me later on of course when I do need to use file dialogs. Has anyone else dealt with this issue too and found the real culprit? Did any of you find a solution I could use to fix this problem instead of dancing around it like I am now? Thanks in advance.

The inserted widget has a somewhat complicated layout, so I am trying to define it in HTML. referencePanel.add(...) fails with NoSuchElement exception. reference.getElement().toSource returns "undefined".     So here's where I'm coming from: My background is in C#, C++, VB Script, php, javascript, PowerShell, T-SQL, and VB 6. I have some experience with python, and a brief introduction to Ruby On Rails. At work, we're transitioning to a web based UI in the next year or so, but in asp.net & SilverLight. I would like to, if possible, learn more open source web technologies on the side. And, hopefully, in a year and a half or so, I would like to transition to a more open source web technology position. I found that I do really like python, but I'm open to pretty much anything. And yes, I do know Linux (ubuntu and gentoo), as well. And, here's my question: What technologies, frameworks, IDEs, or systems should I be highly proficient in to become a prime candidate for a position doing web application development using non-Microsoft technologies?
