• Why might login failures cause SQL 2005 to dump and ditch?

  Our SQL 2005 server began timing out and finally stopped responding on Oct 26th. The application logs showed a ton of 17883 events leading up to a reboot. After the reboot everything was fine but we were still scratching our heads. Fast forward 6 days... it happened again. Then again 2 days later. The last night. Today it has happened three times to far. The timeline is fairly predictable when it happens: Trans log backups. Login failure for "user2". Minidump Another minidump for the scheduler Repeated 17883 events. Server fails little by little until it won't accept any requests. Reboot is all that gets us going again (a band-aid) Interesting, though, is that the server box itself doesn't seem to have any problems. CPU usage is normal. Network connectivity is fine. We can remote in and look at logs. Management studio does eventually bog down, though. Today, for the first time, we tried stopping services instead of a reboot. All services stopped on their own except for the SQL Server service. We finally did an "end task" on that one and were able to bring everything back up. It worked fine for about 30 minutes until we started seeing timeouts and 17883's again. This time, probably because we didn't reboot all the way, we saw a bunch of 844 events mixed in with the 17883's. Our entire tech team here is scratching heads... some ideas we're kicking around: MS Cumulative Update hit around the same time as when we first had a problem. Since then, we've rolled it back. Maybe it didn't rollback all the way. The situation looks and feels like an unhandled "stack overflow" (no relation) in that it starts small and compounds over time. Problem with this is that there isn't significant CPU usage. At any rate, we're not ruling SQL 2005 bug out at all. Maybe we added one too many import processes and have reached our limit on this box. (hard to believe). Looking at SQLDUMP0151.log at the time of one of the crashes. There are some "login failures" and then there are two stack dumps. 1st a normal stack dump, 2nd for a scheduler dump. • How to trigger cross-platform jobs between Windows and Unix

  I have an application which has components on Windows and Unix. I need to run overnight jobs which initiate tasks/jobs on both environment. These need to be sequenced so I cannot simple use Cron / Task Scheduler. For each job, there will be a controlling script either on Windows or Unix, but this script will need to initiate jobs on the other environment and detect when they are complete and a success/failure code. In the past I have achieved this using 'flag files' on a samba share. This worked but required 'polling' behaviour on the receiving end which I do not consider optimal. I would prefer not to have to embed user credentials in script if possible.

  Just would like some feedback on the best ftp program (not free). The requirements I'm looking for is: - secure ftp - for use on mac, linux, windows - backup utility with scheduler - for use on more than one computer (multi-license) I'm using wsftp from 2007 right now but it's only good for windows. It's license is only good for one computer. And after some vista updates it's making some strange noises. I tried to turn off the noise (via control panel) and it's still making that noise and I turned off the sound within wsftp too. I like the program but I think it's time to look for a new one. I have per the task scheduler scheduled windows 7 backup and utility to run once a day. The amount of data I produce in a day is best measured in KiB yet, a few GiB of data is added to the backup destination set in the backup utility daily. Why is this? Is this due to this utility making what are called "normal" backups instead of "incremental" backups? If so, how can this setting be changed?

• Running scheduled web scripts in a Windows Server environment

  I'm trying to get a scheduled web script running on a Windows Server and so far the only way I've managed to automate this process is by using the Task Scheduler to open Internet Explorer with the web address as a parameter. I then need to create a separate task to run just after this task to close Internet Explorer (otherwise the task doesn't complete). Is there a better way of doing this? I've also managed to run the script by calling the web address through a Telnet connection to the web server (GET /web/address/here) but I haven't found a way of automating this process on a scheduled basis. Any ideas appreciated

• Group Policy Task Schedule deployed to User Configuration not working, works when in Computer Configuration?

  I added a Scheduled Task on my Windows 2008 R2 Domain Controller in the Group Policy Manager: MyDomain Policy User Configuration Preferences Control Panel Settings Scheduled Tasks Basic Task, like starting notepad, when user unlocks his workstation. This should show up in the client workstation's task scheduler, but it dosn't. No errors or anything like that. If I use the "Computer Configuration" instead of "User Configuration" the task appears, and I'm able to run the task. I've tried the gpupdate /force followed by gpresult and checked the report, but it dosn't contain the GPO Scheduled Tasks I created? (again, does show up when using "Computer Configuration".) The issue is that I have to run the application in the current users context, and only on a specific Employee OU, and thereby limit this task only to Employee Workstations and not apply the application when the same employee log on to internal servers and such. Primary domain dontroller is a Windows 2008 R2, workstations Windows 7 Enterprise. What am I doing wrong ?

  I have a server running on Windows server 2008 R2. It is recently added as a member of a domain. I am not able to start any applications in thew server. When I tried to open Event viewer it errored out saying "The page file is to small to complete the action". I am experiencing same problem when I tried to open Sql server Management studio, task scheduler or any other application. The windows server serves as a production database server, but our applications are not experiencing any problems. Can someone please help?

• How can I find the program making a harmonica sound?

  A friend has a Windows XP SP3 machine that plays a harmonica sound for about 5 seconds throughout the day at what seems to be random intervals (every couple hours). My question is how can I find the program making this sound? Is there a Windows API hook for monitoring audio access? I've gone through and checked all the standard Windows sounds in the Control Panel and right now the theme is set to no sounds and I personally checked to make sure none of the events have a sound specified. I also checked the Task Scheduler to make sure there wasn't something scheduled to go off every couple hours. Any ideas on how to go about finding the bugger?

  Today I had to schedule a package stored in the shiny new SSIS Catalog store that can be enabled with SQL Server 2012. (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh479588(v=SQL.110).aspx) Once your packages are stored here, they will be executed using the new stored procedures created for this purpose. Within the results tabulation WolframAlpha provided me with all sorts of neat data break downs. I now know exactly how many days it is to my next birthday, the composition of my aggregate posting habits (how many posts are status updates, links, or photos), the time of day when I do the most posting (and what the composition of those posts is), and my average post length. I also know my most liked post and my most commented on post. It will even crunch the numbers on your network of friends (60.6% of my friends are married, for example). By far one of the more interesting data analysis it does on the friendship data, however, is organizing all your friends into relationship clusters so you can see who in your Facebook network is friends with other people in your Facebook network. The service from WolframAlpha is free: simply visit the WolframAlpha search portal and type in “Facebook report” to start the process. You’ll be prompted to create a WolframAlpha account if you don’t have one and to authorize the WolframAlpha Facebook app to access your data. • SQL Server Job system silently fails

  We run numerous scheduled jobs using MS SQL 2005 job scheduler. Over the past few weeks, we've been witnessing that a running job will simply STOP and will not record any history in the Log File Viewer. What appears to be happening is that the server will start a job and record these steps into msdb. At a random step during a job, the server will stop running the job and it records no error. This silent failure prevents a "Step 0" record from being created and we won't see anything in the Log File Viewer. Anyone else experience this?

• login takes long time

In the beginning login was fast enough after I put the password it hardly takes 3 to 4 sec to enter in desktop, but now its taking like more that 40 sec to show desktop after entering password. whats the problem, is there any solution? • Should I be running my scheduled backups as SYSTEM or as the our domain admin?

  I have a daily backup which is scheduled through the Task Scheduler. It failed with a strange error code last night, but I was able to search and find a blog post with how to avoid the error in the future. However, one of his recommendations was to run the backups as the Administrator user of the domain. Since all of the files being backed up are local to this system, should I continue to have the backups run as SYSTEM? Or is it actually better to run it as a different user? I have been running these backups for well over a year now and have only had a handful of failures, but ironically when it does fail, the error code means it was a permissions issue (or so I read, this code seems to be undocumented by Microsoft). Thanks in advance for any insight into this. Might as well post the error code here too, in case anyone would like to share their insight on this as well, but I rarely ever get this error, so I don't care too much about it: 4294967294

• Can KVM CPU assignment count differ from physical hosts CPU count?

  I have read this question. I knew already that I could for example, have a quad core machine with four guests each having two vCPUs. As they don't all be require 100% CPU usage all the time, the scheduler would handle this for me. My question is about how this relates to a fail-over or migration situation; If host1 has two dual-core CPUs, and I assign guest1 four vCPUs (so it accessed all four physical cores), what will happen if I try and migrate it to host2 which only has one dual-core CPU? Can qemu-kvm emulate more vCPUs than there are physical? Or would I have to shut down the virtual machine, change the CPU assignment, migrate it, and then boot it back up (so no live migration)?   I am getting the following problem on a number of windows 2008 servers. 0x80041323 Task Scheduler failed to start task \Reporting" in TaskEngine "S-1-5-18:NT AUTHORITY\System:Service:" for user "NT AUTHORITY\System". User Action: Reduce the number of tasks running in the specified user context. I've done lots of research around the web but have been unable to come up with a working answer. I have found some information suggesting increasing a value in the registry key "TasksInMemoryQueue" which I have done, but even setting this as high as 500 has not helped. I have rebooted the server after setting this value. The server does run a high volume of Scheduled tasks, there could be 150 or so running at any one time, but certainly not 500. The scheduled tasks are all running under the system user. Does anyone have any ideas?

• Semantic is consuming all CPU, causing emacs to hang

  I upgraded to emacs 23.2.1 on Windows 7, not long ago. Since then I've been unable to use Semantic. As soon as I start it, the cpu goes to MAX . (actually, Windows reports it at 50%, but this is a dual core machine, so emacs is effectively consuming 100% of a core). Emacs becomes non-responsive. Is there a particular combination of versions of semantic and emacs I that is unsafe to use together? how would I debug this spin/hang? I've seen other suggestions to change the semantic-idle-scheduler-idle-time, from its default 2 to something very large. I tried that, but got the same results.

• Laptop battery life drastically decreased compared to Windows 7

  I am running Ubuntu 10.10 on my Dell Studio XPS 1640 and have about one hour of battery life in it, compared to about 2.5 hours running on Windows 7. This is with wireless and bluetooth on, but still, the difference seems incredible. What could be causing such a difference and is there a way to close the gap without losing core functionality? EDIT: here's some output from powertop. This is with bluetooth turned off and Wifi turned on. The output seems pretty normal to me, but as indicated, this is about 1 hour of battery life on a full battery... The previous 'solution' of installing the official ATI drivers turns out to be a non-solution. Although it does increase battery life, my laptop resolution is maxed out at 1200x800 after a reboot. (Please note that this problem does not need answering in this question as it is a seperate case)

The Update-EbuMembers cmdlet does not return an object. I want to log any verbose messages written by WriteVerbose and I want to log errors created by ThrowTerminatingError.

• Sound entirely stopped working on Windows 8 on a Macbook Pro

  I am currently running Windows 8 (downloaded from DreamSpark) on a Macbook Pro. This worked fine for a while but suddenly all audio stopped working. When I go to "Playback devices" and hit "Test" on the speakers I get treated with the following message: This also shows up right after I try restarting. I tried disallowing exclusive usage of the devices but it makes no difference. Edit: After some looking around I tried changing the sample rate and bit depth so I would get a dialog screen to force Windows to go around the program that's using it.
