  Hi, I'm looking for a regex or a way to format the NumberValidator so that only decimal places are allowed. The domain="real" allows you to put integer values, but I need to force the user to but in 2.0 if they want an integer. This is because they pass through a Castor mapping file, it complains if it gets an integer when it expects a decimal. I dont want to restrict the number of decimal places, just insist that there must be a point, and a number after it. Any help would be much appreciated.

• Which is the best alternative for Java Serialization?

  I'm currently working on a project which needs to persist any kind of objects (of which implementation we don't have any control) so these objects could be recovered afterwards. We can't implement a ORM because we can't restrict the users of our library at development time. Our first alternative was to serialize it with the Java default serialization but we had a lot of trouble recovering the objects when the users started to pass different versions of the same object (attributes changed types, names, ...). We have tried with the XMLEncoder class (transforms an object into a XML), but we have found that there is a lack of functionality (doesn't support Enums for example). Finally, we also tried JAXB but this impose our users to annotate their classes. Any good alternative?

  Hi all, I'm looking to revamp our mobile site with something simple for phones below the ambiguous smart phone category and something a little more interesting for the phones above this category. I'm not interested in WAP/WML for this project. I'm building a ASP.Net 4 MCV 2 app and using MBDF What I'd like to know is how best to define this differentiation when using MBDF? Screen size, Javascript, SpportsTouchScreen etc. are all in MBDF along with others but I'm not sure where to draw the line and where the data is most accurate for the broad number of devices. What do those of you out there developing for this spread of hardware & software split on? Thanks, Denis P.S. I've done my research on xHTML MP1.0 - 1.2 and the best practises for implementation to ensure broad coverage but I don't want to restrict the newer phones out there to what the base line can see.

  Hi guys, I've got a WCF service (basicHttpBinding, basic authentication, IIS 6.0) on which I want to restrict the number of calls per hour - on user basis. For example, max 1000 calls per user, per hour (a la Google Maps, etc). I also want to implement some sort of subscription mechanism, so that users can upgrade their call-limit across various 'price plans'. I know that I could achieve this with a custom Inspector, backed by a DB containing some sort of 'subscription' table and a counter, but I'd like to avoid reinventing the wheel. Does anyone have experience doing this? Are there 3rd party projects/libraries that support this out of the box? Thanks. Eric

  I have a web service method in which I create a particular type of object, use it for a few seconds, and then dispose it. Because of problems arising from multiple threads creating and using instances of this class at the same time, I need to restrict the method so that only one caller at a time ever has one of these objects. To do this, I am creating a private static object: private static object _lock = new object(); ... and then inside the web service method I do this around the critical code: lock (_lock) { using (DangerousObject do = new DangerousObject()) { do.MakeABigMess(); do.CleanItUp(); } } I'm not sure this is working, though. Do I have this right? Will this code ensure that only one instance of DangerousObject is instantiated and in use at a time? Or does each caller get their own copy of _lock, rendering my code here laughable?

• Schemas and tables versus user-ids in a single table using PostgreSQL

  I'm developing a web app and I've come to a fork in the road with respect to database structure and I don't know which direction to take. I have a database with user information that I can structure one of two ways. The first is to create a schema and a set of tables for each user (duplicating the structure for each user) and the second is to create a single set of tables and query information based on user-id. Suppose 100000 users. Here are my questions: Considering security, performance, scalability and administration where does each choice lie? Would the answers change for 1000000 or 10000? Is there a set of best practices that lead to one choice or the other? It seems to me that multiple schemas are more secure since it's trivial to restrict user privileges but what about performance and scalability? Administration seems like a wash since dumping (and restoring) lots of schemas isn't any more difficult than dumping a few.

  Using Shiro we have a great security framework embedded in our enterprise application running on GF. You define users, roles, permissions and we can control at any fine-grain level if a user can access the application, a certain page or even click a specific button. Is there a recipe or pattern, that allows on top of that, to restrict a user from seeing certain data ? Sample: You have a customer table for 3 factories (part of one company). An admin user can see all customer records, but the user at the local factory must not see any customer data of other factories (for whatever reason).   Hello everybody, We are developing an ASP.NET MVC Application that currently uses it's own databse ApplicationData for the domain models and another one Membership for the user management / membership provider. We do access restrictions using data-annotations in our controllers. [Authorize(Roles = "administrators, managers")] This worked great for simple use cases. As we are scaling our application our customer wants to restrict specific users to access specific areas of our ApplicationData database. Each of our products contains a foreign key referring to the region the product was assembled in. A user story would be: Users in the role NewYorkManagers should only be able to edit / see products that are assembled in New York. We created a placeholder table UserRightsRegions that contains the UserId and the RegionId. How can I link both the ApplicationData and the Membership databases in order to work properly / having cross-database-key-references? (Is something like this even possible?) All help is more than appreciated!

• Problem authenticating with shiro in grails app

  I have a grails 1.2 app and I want to use declarative security in order to restrict accesses based on roles. I decided to try shiro, installed the plugin, but when I try to authenticate, the message "Invalid username and/or password" shows up in the header. I check the db entry and the user is there with the sha'ed password. No messages are shown neither in the console nor in the stacktrace file. I added "warn 'org.jsecurity'" to Config.groovy with no results. Any hints/tricks to troubleshoot this ?

If you have DTD processing enabled, you can use the XmlSecureResolver to restrict the resources that the XmlReader can access. You can also design your application so that the XML processing is memory and time constrained. For example, configure time-out limits in your ASP.NET application. Can someone please explain the issue? Why would a reader application want to prohibit the retrieval of a DTD? Where is the denial-of-service issue, if it is a reading application?   This may well be simple, but I'm new to Drupal. The organization I work for switched to Drupal a little while ago, but there's still some legacy code in various external PHP files that would be cumbersome to convert over to work within Drupal. However, it would be very nice to be able to restrict access to some of these pages based on a person being authenticated against Drupal. (Some pages are administrative and are currently visible to anyone who knows the URL, for instance. Yes, poor design, but that's what I inherited...) • Do Eclipse's Refactoring Tools Violate The Java Language Specification?

  In Eclipse 3.5, say I have a package structure like this: tom.package1 tom.package1.packageA tom.package1.packageB if I right click on an the tom.package1 package and go to Refactor-Rename, an option "Rename subpackages" appears as a checkbox. If I select it, and then rename tom.package1 to tom.red my package structure ends up like this: tom.red tom.red.packageA tom.red.packageB Yet I hear that Java's packages are not hierarchical. The Java Tutorials back that up (see the section on Apparent Hierarchies of Packages). It certainly seems like Eclipse is treating packages as hierarchical in this case. I was curious why access specifiers couldn't allow/restrict access to "sub-packages" in a previous question because I KNEW I had seen "sub-packages" referenced somewhere before. So are Eclipse's refactoring tools intentionally misleading impressionable young minds by furthering the "sub-package" myth? Or am I misinterpreting something here?

Your application gives security rules wenever a picture is allowed to be displayed. For example users must be friends on each sides by the system, in order that you can view someone elses uploaded pictures. Here comes the problem: it is possible that someone crawls the image directories of your server. But you want to protect your users from such attacks. If it's possible to put the binary data of an image directly into the html markup, you can restrict the user access of your image dirs the user and group your web application runs of and pass the image data to your apache user and group directly in the html. The only possible weakness then is the password of the user that your web app runs as. Is there already a possibility? Yours, Joern.

What i want to do is restrict users from accessing like i dont want them to go to www.mysite.com/uploads/ and see the files in there and it should show forbidden, but they should be able to download via my website, for example www.mysite.com/downloads.php?id=1 If thats not possible, how can i atleast not show them the directory index on /uploads How is it that file sharing websites does this?   Hi, I have ELMAH set up for a webapp, logging exceptions to a SQL server. I wish to have ELMAH send me an email too, but only when a specific exception is thrown (ie. MySpecialException). ELMAH must still log all exceptions to SQL server. I know you can do it programmatically in global.asax, but I'd prefer to use web.config. So, how do I restrict ELMAH error mails to filter out everything but a specific exception type, using web.config?

  For C# properties, I can do this: public class Employee{ public string Name { get; private set; } public Employee(string name){ Name = name; } } which means that the Name property can be set within the class Employee & can be read publicly. But, if I want to restrict the set to only within the constructors of the Employee class, I need to do: public class Employee{ public readonly string Name = String.Empty; public Employee(string name){ Name = name; } } But, for this case, I had to change the property to a field. Is there any reason this is not possible/allowed in C#: public class Employee{ public string Name { get; private readonly set; } public Employee(string name){ Name = name; } } IMO this will allow us to have properties which can be set only in the constructor & does not require us to change properties to fields...   Hi, By virtue of my application, I need to seperate my business entities from the entities created by EF4. I need to restrict the entities to only access the repository from where they are translated (using translator) to business entities shared at business and service layer. I thought of restricting them by specifying them as internal. Now there are more than 40 entities in my application so manually setting them as internal is a difficult job. In one of the forums the answers suggested using the T4 templates. But even those templates read from the entity framework access specifier. When I try to manually try to specify all the properties and class access specifiers as internal it gives me an error saying that the entity set should also be set to internal, but there is no option for the same. I am using VS 2010 and Entity Framework 4. Any suggestions???

• WPF Application - Role Management Recommendations

  I have a WPF application with a WCF service layer and a SQL database. I now want to restrict elements of the application so that certain functions are only available to those users with a particular role. For example, you will only be able to navigate to the settings screen if you are an administrator. I would like a user to be a member of 1 or more authorisation groups and each authorisation group to have 1 or more roles associated. A long time ago I used AzMan (Authorisation Manager) to do a similar thing. Does anyone think that there are better approaches? Is AzMan "old news"? Alternatives? Thanks.
