  • Ruby On Rails on Windows - Linux VM or dual boot

    I am a windows developer currently getting into Rails. While you can develop on RoR Windows, it's not the ideal experience. Things are glitchy and running cucumber tests are painfully slow. So, would I be able to have a decent dev experience running Linux in a VM for doing RoR development, or should I bite the bullet and just do a dual boot - Windows 7 / Linux?

  • Ruby on Rails updating join table records

    Hey, I have two models Users and Roles. I have setup a many to many relationship between the two models and I have a joint table called roles_users. I have a form on a page with a list of roles which the user checks a checkbox and it posts to the controller which then updates the roles_users table. At the moment in my update method I am doing this because I am not sure of a better way: role_ids = params[:role_ids] user.roles.clear role_ids.each do |role| user.roles << Role.find(role) end unless role_ids.nil? So I am clearing all the entries out then looping threw all the role ids sent from the form via post, I also noticed that if all the checkboxes are checked and the form posted it keeps adding duplicate records, could anyone give some advice on a more efficent way of doing this?

    I'd probably be able to answer this for myself if "::" wasn't so hard to Google. Didn't see anything on SO so thought I'd try my luck. What is this double-colon :: all about? I see it everywhere in Rails: class User < ActiveRecord::Base or… ActionController::Routing::Routes.draw do |map| I found a definition from this guy: The :: is a unary operator that allows: constants, instance methods and class methods defined within a class or module, to be accessed from anywhere outside the class or module. but that just leads to more questions. What good is scope (private, protected) if you can just use :: to expose anything?

    I am getting an EOFError (End Of File Error) on this code in my controller. The block where the error appears is at the end of the line that says UserMailer.deliver_message( I am unaware as to how to fix this, I have been stuck for about 2 months and this site was suggested. For example, I would like to create a Group class and add it to something like Community Engine (http://communityengine.org/).     I have a problem calling class method from the with_option block with validations: Model: class Model < ActiveRecord::Base attr_accessible :field with_options :if => "<not important>" do |step| ... bunch of validations step.validates :field, :inclusion => {:within => Model.field} end private self.field (1..10) end end And it returns: undefined method `field' for #Class:0x5f394a8 self.class.field also doesn't work.   • Having trouble understanding some code (Ruby on Rails)

    I posted a question awhile ago asking how I could limit the rate at which a form could be submitted from a rails application. I was helped by a very patient user and their solution works great. The code was for my comments controller, and now I find myself wanting to add this functionality to another controller, my Messages controller. I immediately tried reusing the working code from the comments controller but I couldn't get it to work. I'll explain how much of the code I understand. When a comment is created, a cookie is created with a last_post_time value. If they try to post another comment, the cookie is checked if the last one was made in the last two minutes. If it was a flash warning is displayed and no comment is recorded. What I don't really understand is how the post_check method works and how I can adapt it for my simpler posts controller. I thought I could reuse all the code in the message controller with the exception of the line: @message = Message.find(params[:message_id]) # (don't need the redirect code) in the post_check method. But it trips up on the "record_post_time" in the create action/method. I really want to understand this. Can someone explain why this doesn't work? I greatly appreciate you reading my lengthy question.

  • Removing a pattern from the beggining and end of a string in ruby

    So I found myself needing to remove <br /> tags from the beginning and end of strings in a project I'm working on. I made a quick little method that does what I need it to do but I'm not convinced it's the best way to go about doing this sort of thing. I suspect there's probably a handy regular expression I can use to do it in only a couple of lines. Here's what I got: def remove_breaks(text) if text != nil and text != "" text.strip! index = text.rindex("<br />") while index != nil and index == text.length - 6 text = text[0, text.length - 6] text.strip! index = text.rindex("<br />") end text.strip! index = text.index("<br />") while index != nil and index == 0 text = test[6, text.length] text.strip! index = text.index("<br />") end end return text end Now the "<br />" could really be anything, and it'd probably be more useful to make a general use function that takes as an argument the string that needs to be stripped from the beginning and end. I'm open to any suggestions on how to make this cleaner because this just seems like it can be improved.

    I'm wondering what the difference is between the following two modules # First Example module Parent module Child end end and # Second Example module Parent::Child end Using the 2nd method, it appears as though the Parent module must be previously defined, otherwise I get an 'uninitialized constant' error Given this, what is the preferred way of defining modules such as this and then adding nested children with regards to syntax and file structure (ie. folders etc). Reference to a Rails way would be greatly appreciated. Are these two examples for all intents and purposes equivalent?

  • Having trouble routing a page in ruby

    I currently have a users model and controller, whenever a user is created it makes there profile url at example.com/users/userid. I also have a users/new page and a users/index page. The issue is that when I try to create a users/selected users page rails thinks its a user id and gives me this error. "Couldn't find User with id=selectedusers." I've previously been able to fix this by directly calling the pages in the controller e.g index, or new but I'm not sure how to handle a page that doesent have a function in the controller. Thank you

  • Resource mapping in a Ruby on Rails URL (RESTful API)

    I'm having a bit of difficulty coming up with the right answer to this, so I will solicit my problem here. I'm working on a RESTFul API. Naturally, I have multiple resources, some of which consist of parent to child relationships, some of which are stand alone resources. Where I'm having a bit of difficulty is figuring out how to make things easier for the folks who will be building clients against my API. The situation is this. Hypothetically I have a 'Street' resource. Each street has multiple homes. So Street :has_many to Homes and Homes :belongs_to Street. If a user wants to request an HTTP GET on a specific home resource, the following should work: http://mymap/streets/5/homes/10 That allows a user to get information for a home with the id 10. Straight forward. My question is, am I breaking the rules of the book by giving the user access to: http://mymap/homes/10 Technically that home resource exists on its own without the street. It makes sense that it exists as its own entity without an encapsulating street, even though business logic says otherwise. What's the best way to handle this?

    I'm trying to figure out how to add records to an existing object for each iteration of a loop. I'm having a hard time discovering the difference between an object and an array. I have this @events = Event.find(1) @loops = Choices.find(:all, :limit => 5) #so loop for 5 instances of choice model for loop in @loops @events = Event.find(:all,:conditions => ["event.id = ?", loop.event_id ]) end I'm trying to add a new events to the existing @events object based on the id of whatever the loop variable is. But the ( = ) operator just creates a new instance of the @events object. I tried ( += ) and ( << ) as operators but got the error "You have a nil object when you didn't expect it! You might have expected an instance of Array. The error occurred while evaluating nil" I tried created an array events = [] events << Event.find(1) @loops = Choices.find(:all, :limit => 5) #so loop for 5 instances of choice model for loop in @loops events << Event.find(:all,:conditions => ["event.id = ?", loop.event_id ]) end But I dont know how to call that arrays attributes within the view With objects I was able do create a loop within the view and call all the attributes of that object as well... <table> <% for event in @events %> <tr> <td><%= link_to event.title, event %></td> <td><%= event.start_date %></td> <td><%= event.price %></td> </tr> <% end %> </table> How could i do this with an array set? So the questions are 1) Whats the difference between arrays and objects? 2) Is there a way to add into the existing object for each iteration? 3) If I use an array, is there a way to call the attributes for each array record within the view?

    I've been working through the tutorial for the past few days, and finally hit a snag in chapter 7. It is in this step where the line in routes.rb: get "users/new" is replaced with resource :users After I do this, I get a routing error when visiting http://localhost:3000/users/1 - No route matches [GET] "/users/1" instead of the other "Unknown Action" error shown here.     I have a string. That string is a html code and it serves as a teaser for the blog posts I am creating. The whole html code (teaser) is stored in a field in the database. My goal: I'd like to make that when a user (facebook like social button) likes certain blog post, right data is displayed on his news feeds. In order to do that I need to extract from the teaser in the first occurrence of an image an image path inside src="i-m-a-g-e--p-a-t-h". I succeeded when a user puts only one image in teaser, but if he accidentally puts two images or more the whole thing craches. Furthermore, for description field I need to extract text inside the first occurrence inside <p> tag. The problem is also that a user can put an image inside the first tag. I would very much appreciate if an expert could help me resolve this what's been bugging me for days.     Right now I'm building a project management app in rails, here is some background info: Right now i have 2 models, one is User and the other one is Client. Clients and Users have a one-to-one relationship (client - has_one and user - belongs_to which means that the foreign key it's in the users table) So what I'm trying to do it's once you add a client you can actually add credentials (add an user) to that client, in order to do so all the clients are being displayed with a link next to that client's name meaning that you can actually create credentials for that client. What i can't figure it out how to do is, that if you actually have credentials in the database (meaning that there's a record in the users table with your client id) then don't display that link. Here's what i thought that would work <% for client in @client%> <h5> <h4><%= client.id %></h4> <a href="/clients/<%= client.id %>"><%= client.name %></a> <% for user in @user %> <% if user.client_id = client.id %> <a href="/clients/<%= client.id %>/user/new">Credentials</a> <%end%> <% end %> </h5> <% end %> And here's the controller: def index @client = Client.find_all_by_admin(0) @user = User.find(:all) end but instead it just puts the link the amount of times per records in the user table. Any help?
