  I have 5 web servers (Apache/mod_perl) behind Amazon EC2 Elastic Load Balancing, when I deploy codes to the web servers, I am doing this.. For each machine, shutdown the Apache Update the code Start over the server and proceed to the next server I think when my server is shutdown, ELB will not distribute request to my server, but how about the request still serving? I think a better approach is Stop accepting new request from ELB Sleep for sometimes, shutdown web server only if all requests are responded Update the codes Start the server again But how to perform (1) and (2) from my local sever? Do I need to use AWS API? or other easy way to do it? Thanks.

  I am looking for a better way to log cronjobs. Most cronjobs tend to spam email or the console, get ignored, or create yet another logfile. In this case, I have a Nagios NSCA script which sends data to a central Nagios sever. This send_nsca script also prints a single status line to STDOUT, indicating success or failure. 0 * * * * root /usr/local/nagios/sbin/nsca_check_disk This emails the following message to root@localhost, which is then forwarded to my team of sysadmins. Spam. forwarded nsca_check_disk: 1 data packet(s) sent to host successfully. I'm looking for a log method which: Doesn't spam the messages to email or the console Don't create yet another krufty logfile which requires cleanup months or years later. Capture the log information somewhere, so it can be viewed later if desired. Works on most unixes Fits into an existing log infrastructure. Uses common syslog conventions like 'facility' Some of these are third party scripts, and don't always do logging internally.

• Is A Managed Switch With VLAN Support Required

  Hello, I am wondering if I need to buy a switch which is managed (VLAN support) for my configuration, or will a cheaper unmanaged switch work? I have servers with two NICS each. The first NIC is public and the second NIC is private. The router will plug into the switch port 1 let's say (public). Then server 1 public plugs into port 2 on the switch, and sever 1 private plugs into port 3 on the switch. The public interface is: 192.168.X.X / 255.255.0.0 and the private interface is 10.0.X.X / 255.255.0.0.   We have a web application project wich will be created using ASP.NET 4.0, Entity Framework, and SQL Sever 2008 R2. To meet the needs, suppose a normal page of this application that has a query which it takes 10 miliseconds to response on a Core2 Quad @ 2.8GHz proccessor with 2x2GB of DDR3 Ram (EntityFramework overheads are considered). And we will have about 2000 concurrent user at peek times. So, what is the best recommended specifications (CPU/RAM/RAID/...) for the server which will be host this application? -- Or -- How can I calculate that?

• How to issue machine certificates to Android devices trying to connect to L2TP VPN (L2TP/IPsec with Certificate)?

  I are trying to find a way to connect Android devices to our VPN box running Windows Sever 2008. We manage to configure a couple Android devices to connect via PPTP. However, I would like to be able to connect using L2TP/IPSec with certificates instead. I've managed to export and apply the Enterprise CA's certificate on the Android phone, but are totally lost on how to issue a machine certificate to the Android phone. Is it even possible? If so, what are steps I should take to issue the machine certificate and enable the Android phone to connect via L2TP/IPsec with certificates? Thank you for your help!

• Windows Server 2008 Enterprise. Incorrect password on screensaver

  First some software details: Thin client: Wyse C10LE Citrix - Windows Terminal Services - Windows Server 2008 Enterprise desktop I have a user with a very strange problem. When he locks his screen with Win+L, Windows claims he's entering wrong password when he tries to log back in. The only solution is to hard reboot the WYSE, and log back in. This reboot doesn't kill his Windows session. I've checked for errors in keyboard settings (wrong layout etc), nothing found. I suspect errors in his profile/errors in AD. No other users in the domain has this problem. EDIT: Sorry, it's NOT Win R2. Plain Windows Sever 2008

• Resolving Domainnames differently for different services

  Some time ago we had an issue with our network infrastructure and php with curl. Our Network infrastructure is fairly simple. LoadBalancer/Firewall = 5 servers The Domainname of our website is set to the ip of the Loadbalancer, of course. But calling curl from one of the servers did result in a timeout. It appears that a server could not call for its own domain it is serving. So we had to set the domains via /etc/hosts to the sever itself. But now We have implemented a Varnish in front of the Loadbalancer, which we want to automatically purge, once a change on a page happens. So now we need to call the domain www.example.com/url_to_purge. Sadly this call what be resolved to the server itself instead of the varnish, because of the /etc/hosts entries. So now I am wondering, if you could resolve domain names differently for different services :)

  I'm researching a sever clustering architecture as a redundancy and backup solution for a client, and something that isn't made clear is whether or not i can use server clustering to replace a file server with backup solution. Forgive my Elementary understanding of server clustering but supposing: 2 Sites (NJ, CA) Identical Servers at each site setup as a Remote Site Cluster nodes with Windows Enterprise server 2008 r2 Services: File, Terminal, AD, and maybe DNS Will the following will be true: Files (including data drives) will be synced between the two servers eliminating the need for third party backup/mirroring software to sync/backup files. Also supposing i use roaming profiles w/ folder redirection; How will client computer in the WAN access their data through the cluster (i.e. will they automatically choose the best route)

• light.exe : error LGHT0217: Error executing ICE action &lsquo;ICE*&rsquo; with BizTalk Deployment Framework &amp; TFS 2010 Build.

  Hi there, Recently I was working with BizTalk Deployment Framework v5.0 for my BizTalk Sever 2009 projects and TFS 2010 Builds. I had followed all the steps mentioned in the BTDF documentation to create the build definition and also followed the steps to setup the Build Server with BTDF. After few hiccups I was stuck at this light.exe validation error. The detailed error is as below: light.exe : error LGHT0217: Error executing ICE action 'ICE06'. The most common cause of this kind of ICE failure is an incorrectly registered scripting engine. See http://wix.sourceforge.net/faq.html#Error217 for details and how to solve this problem. The following string format was not expected by the external UI message logger: "The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance." I found few blog posts and forum answers out there which had steps to resolve the error but all of them mentioned different things. Like: Some mentioned that disable the validation itself so that the VBScript would not be called. (I didn’t want to disable the validation.) Another said to put NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE in the local Administrators group but this is not recommended as it opens up network security holes. But what actually worked for me was: TFS Build Service Account was part of the Administrator group on the Build Server which is OK. But somehow it was also part of the IIS_IUSR Group. I removed the TFS Build Service Account from the IIS_IUSR group. Queued up my TFS Build but same error. Again after some digging, I found that I had not restarted the Visual Studio Team Build Service. In a Nutshell: Remove TFS Build Service Account from IIS_IUSR Group. Restart the Visual Studio Team Build Service, either from Services or TFS Console.   Hope this resolves the issue for someone and not waste bunch of hours.   Thanks, Vishal Mody

  Already 10 days has passed since SQL Bits X in London. I really enjoyed it! Those kind of events are great not only for the content but also to meet friends that – due to distance – is not possible to meet every day. Friends from PASS, SQL CAT, Microsoft, MVP and so on all in one place, drinking beers, whisky and having fun. A perfect mixture for a great learning and sharing experience! I’ve also enjoyed a lot delivering my session on Temporal Snapshot Fact Tables. Given that the subject is very specific I was not expecting a lot of attendees….but I was totally wrong! It seems that the problem of handling daily snapshot of data is more common than what I expected. I’ve also already had feedback from several attendees that applied the explained technique to their existing solution with success. The server is connected by LAN. On one computer running windows XP I can see the server but are not allowed to acces them. On another computer on the WIFI-net running win7 I cannot see the server at all but I can ping the server and I can see the smb-protocoll is running when sniffing with wireshark. I don't primarily want to use passwords, computers on the lan and wifi should be able to connect without any login-procedure. I'm sure my config is not sufficient but have hard to understand how I should do. Theres a lot of descriptions on the net but most is old and none have been of any help. I'm also confused by the fact that I can not se the sever on my win7-machine even though it communicates with the samba-server. Would be very happy if anyone could spread some light over this mess.

• How to represent an agile project to people focused on waterfall [closed]

  Our team has been asked to represent our development efforts in a project plan. No one is unhappy with our work or questioning our ability to deliver, we are just participating in an IT cattle call for project plans. Trouble is we are an agile team and haven't thought about our work in terms of a formal project plan. While we have a general idea of what we are working on next we aren't 100% sure until we plan an iteration. Until now our team has largely operated in a vacuum and has not been required to present our methodology or metrics to outside parties. We follow most of the practices espoused in Extreme Programming. We hold quarterly planning meetings to have a general idea of the stories we are going to work on for a quarter. That said, our stories are documented on 3x5 cards and are only estimated at the beginning of the iteration in which they are going to be worked. After estimation we document the story in Team Foundation Sever. During an iteration, we attach code to stories and mark stories as completed once finished. From this data we are able to generate burn down and velocity charts. Most importantly we know our average velocity for an iteration keeping us from biting off more than we can chew. I am not looking to modify the way we do development but want to present our development activities in a report that someone only familiar with waterfall will understand. In What Does an Agile Project Plan Look Like, Kent McDonald does a good job laying out the differences between agile and waterfall project plans. He specifies the differences in consumable bullets: An agile project plan is feature based An Agile Project Plan is organized into iterations An Agile Project Plan has different levels of detail depending on the time frame An Agile Project Plan is owned by the Team Being able to explain the differences is great, but how best to present the data?

• Develop for Desktop and mobile use?

  I am in the very beginning of developing an app / desktop program. I want it to be cross-platform and possibly also as a tablet version (preferably Android Icecream sandwich). Note that I need to run it offline. I thought about the following approaches: ADOBE Air, since I do not need much performance. Plus I did some web programming in the past which might be of some use. Afaik it would run on OS X and Windows and should run on mobile OSes, too. Qt. Found some nice Qt based desktop recently and read it also works on android. Plus I like the SDK. HTML5 / JS. Again my web background should help me here. I wont need no sever side scripts, thus it should work without installing anything but a browser. How easy could this be converted into an Android app? There might be a plethora of other (better) ways to do it, but I haven't thought of them yet. Can you help out? How would you create such an application. Would it be better to do some pure desktop client and then create tablet versions? Would you rather start to create a website and worry later on how to turn into an app?

  I'm an ASP.NET Webforms developer, and I face some problems when I deal with designers. Designers always complain about the asp.net server controls. They'd rather just have an html file and create css files along with the required images to go with those. Sometimes, if the design phase is done in advance, I get html files with related css files, but then we face many problems integrating the design with the aspx files (sever controls an telerik controls ... etc). What I want to ask about is: How do I overcome these problems? The designers prefer php- and mvc developers because of the problems with .net server controls. I need to know how to interact with the designers in the correct way. Are there any tools or applications to provide the designers with the rendered (html page) of the .aspx pages? By that I mean the page in runtime rather than the aspx in Visual Studio. They do use Web Expression but they want the rendered page in html as well.

• Is it possible to have multiple subdomains point to the same Blogger blog?

  For our application we want to have a status page which is hosted outside of the rest of our infrastructure so in case there are issues in our data center we can post updates for our users and our users will be able to access them. We registered a blog on Blogger and set it up with xyzstatus.blogspot.com and status.xyz.com. Everything seems to work fine. We need to perform some maintenance at our datacenter which will sever all connectivity so we're unable to have a redirect using nginx or apache. We'd like to do this with a short TTL CNAME DNS entry. Ideally www.xyz.com and app.xyz.com could be CNAMEd to status.xyz.com. When I setup the CNAME and go to that URL I get a Google broken robot 404 page. I figure I must need to let Google know it should associate traffic to www.xyz.com and app.xyz.com to the blog served up by status.xyz.com. But I can't see anywhere to do this in Blogger. Does anyone know if this is possible?

• Oracle EZConnect in Mediawiki

  Mediawiki supports Oracle and I'm trying to configure it in the installer. The installers says you can use EZConnect...something like: user/pass@//server.example.com/dbname or since the installer has fields elsewhere for user/pass server.example.com/dbname The installer includes a link to the EZConnect docs: http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/network.112/e10836/naming.htm. All the examples in that doc include a forward slash. But every combination I've tried results in an error like this: Invalid database TNS "sever.example.com/service_name". Use only ASCII letters (a-z, A-Z), numbers (0-9), underscores (_) and dots (.). I can't find any examples of EZConnect that don't include a forward slash. That error is from Mediawiki, not Oracle. I'm tailing the listener log and there is no connection made - Medaiwiki is returning an error without trying to connect. I'm using php OCI8 with the Oracle instant client. I don't have a tnsnames.ora setup for this client - which is kind of the point of EZConnect. I did write a test php script that connects via oci_connect just fine. Has anyone configured Mediawiki to use Oracle with EZConnect? If so, what did you use in the installer?

• How to disguise a serverside mob as another?

  I've been working a Minecraft sever mod and i want to be able to add a new entity to the server, but then make the server send the packets to the client, imitating another mob, for example.. Lets say say i have EntityPlayerNPC.class, what i want to do is have all of the packets that get sent to the client look like they are from that of another player which is on the player, therefore allowing me to add custom NPC's... Thinking about the theory i'm sure this can be done. I've tried looking around for where the packets are being sent from and whatnot, can anyone think up a solution? edit: i tried adding a new constructor to the Packet20NamedEntitySpawn class like so: public Packet20NamedEntitySpawn(String username, EntityLiving e){ this.entityId = 0; this.name = username; this.xPosition = MathHelper.floor_double(e.posX * 32.0D); this.yPosition = MathHelper.floor_double(e.posY * 32.0D); this.zPosition = MathHelper.floor_double(e.posZ * 32.0D); this.rotation = (byte)((int)(e.rotationYaw * 256.0F / 360.0F)); this.pitch = (byte)((int)(e.rotationPitch * 256.0F / 360.0F)); this.metadata = e.getDataWatcher(); } unfortunatley, that didn't work :(

• Looking for home networking hardware and software advice

  Note: I originally wrote this up in a blog post. I've removed any affiliate links that I put in my original post to ensure I don't annoy anybody. I've recently moved home and I now need to go to the trouble of sorting out my home network yet again. We had Virgin broadband in Hertford but you can't get Virgin in the street we've moved to so I've had to go with O2 Broadband. Normally I prefer to use my own hardward, and previously used the DLink DIR-655 router which was great, but in this situation I am using the O2 Wirelss Box III since I only have an old Netgear DG834PN Wireless G modem router and I'd rather be using Wireless N. Anyway, the place we have moved into has only one phone point in the hallway, has the best TV point in one room and the best place to put the TV and other entertainment stuff in yet another room. So, networking the house up for Internet and TV is required. The diagram below shows the things that I'll have in my home network but there are three points where I'm not quite sure what hardware to us. Wireless Access Point/Bridge, that acts only as a wireless to wire bridge and not an AP, that links up a Media Centre/PC and a couple of consoles to the network. I'm pretty much settled on us an Acer Aspire Revo R3600 as my media PC, probably with Ubuntu or Windows and XBMC installed.   This is probably a simple question to answer but I just can't figure it out. I have a "Company" class with a many-to-one to "Address" which has a many to one to a composite id in "City". When I load a "Company" it loads the "Address", but if I call any property of "Address" I get the error: {"could not load an entity: [IDI.Domain.Entities.Address#2213][SQL: SELECT address0_.AddressId as AddressId13_0_, address0_.Street as Street13_0_, address0_.floor as floor13_0_, address0_.room as room13_0_, address0_.postalcode as postalcode13_0_, address0_.CountryCode as CountryC6_13_0_, address0_.CityName as CityName13_0_ FROM Address address0_ WHERE address0_.AddressId=?]"} The inner exception is: {"Invalid column name 'CountryCode'.\r\nInvalid column name 'CityName'."} What I don't understand is that I can run the query in sql server 2005 and it works, furthermore both those columns exist in the address table.
