• Linux iptables / conntrack performance issue

  I have a test-setup in the lab with 4 machines: 2 old P4 machines (t1, t2) 1 Xeon 5420 DP 2.5 GHz 8 GB RAM (t3) Intel e1000 1 Xeon 5420 DP 2.5 GHz 8 GB RAM (t4) Intel e1000 to test linux firewall performance since we got bitten by a number of syn-flood attacks in the last months. All machines run Ubuntu 12.04 64bit. t1, t2, t3 are interconnected through an 1GB/s switch, t4 is connected to t3 via an extra interface. So t3 simulates the firewall, t4 is the target, t1,t2 play the attackers generating a packetstorm thorugh (192.168.4.199 is t4): hping3 -I eth1 --rand-source --syn --flood 192.168.4.199 -p 80 t4 drops all incoming packets to avoid confusion with gateways, performance issues of t4 etc. I watch the packet stats in iptraf. I have configured the firewall (t3) as follows: stock 3.2.0-31-generic #50-Ubuntu SMP kernel rhash_entries=33554432 as kernel parameter sysctl as follows: net.ipv4.ip_forward = 1 net.ipv4.route.gc_elasticity = 2 net.ipv4.route.gc_timeout = 1 net.ipv4.route.gc_interval = 5 net.ipv4.route.gc_min_interval_ms = 500 net.ipv4.route.gc_thresh = 2000000 net.ipv4.route.max_size = 20000000 (I have tweaked a lot to keep t3 running when t1+t2 are sending as many packets as possible). The result of this efforts are somewhat odd: t1+t2 manage to send each about 200k packets/s. t4 in the best case sees aroung 200k in total so half of the packets are lost. t3 is nearly unusable on console though packets are flowing through it (high numbers of soft-irqs) the route cache garbage collector is no way near to being predictable and in the default setting overwhelmed by very few packets/s (<50k packets/s) activating stateful iptables rules makes the packet rate arriving on t4 drop to around 100k packets/s, efectively losing more than 75% of the packets And this - here is my main concern - with two old P4 machines sending as many packets as they can - which means nearly everyone on the net should be capable of this. So here goes my question: Did I overlook some importand point in the config or in my test setup? Are there any alternatives for building firewall system especially on smp systems?

• What are those CPU control panel softwares called?

  My computer is running an AMD Phenom II quad core CPU but it didn't come with the piece of software that I see people have in a lot of youtube videos. The software is kind of like the ATI catalyst control center but for the AMD processor instead. It shows things like current core temperature, clock speed, etc and I am not sure but maybe it also allows the user to make changes to those things from the control center as well. I am having a hard time finding the download for this online, especially since I don't even have the name for it.

• My Windows 7 computer is stuck in a refresh rate not supported by my display. How can I fix this?

  Star Wars: The Old Republic apparently decided that my screen res should be 1680x1050 at 75hz. I have an older monitor that doesn't support that refresh rate. I fixed this problem within the game, but subsequently I alt-tabbed out of the game to the desktop & it reset me to those settings. Now my monitor shows a blank screen with "out of range" in Windows, and these settings persist even through a reboot. I booted into safe mode, but of course while there, I can only change the settings for the default driver. How can I get my machine back into a usable state?

• Ways of file copy

  I sometimes found that when using simple right-click and copy-and-paste, some files/directories are not copied completely or not at all, because of various reasons, such as some saved webpage files/directories have some strange characters in their names or their names are too long. For example, in Windows 7, I save this webpage http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/working-around-windows-vistas-shrink-volume-inadequacy-problems/ completely in a very deep directories whose parent directories may have long names, I cannot copy its top ancestry directory, as Windows complains the filename for the saved webpage directory is too long. In Ubuntu, sometimes I can save a file with some special character such as newline under some directory. But when I copy that directory, it will say the file name has some special character and I will have to manually remove the character. Such cases are complained in both Windows and Ubuntu. I was wondering what some better ways to accomplish the copy job in both Windows and Ubuntu. For example, will archiving all to be copied into a single archive help? If yes how to do that? • EMERGENCY! Update Statement for critical mysql production database now running for 18 hours, need help.

  We have a table with 500 million rows. Unfortunately, one of the columns was int(11), which is a signed int, and it was an incrementing value that just rolled over the 2.1 billion magic number. This immediately caused downtime for about 10.000 users. We discussed many solutions, and decided that we could just roll back this value safely, by say, a billion. But we had to roll it back for every row. Here is what we did: update Table1 Set MessageId = case when MessageId < 1073741824 then 0 else MessageId - 1073741824 end; I tested this on a table with 10 million rows and it took 11 minutes. So I assumed the larger table would take 550 minutes, or 9 hours. This was going to be our biggest downtime in 3 years. (We're a startup). It's now going on 18 hours. What should we do? Please don't say what we should have done. I think we should have updated a few million rows at a time. Is there a way we can see progress? Could Mysql have hung? Using mysql 5.0.22. Thanks!

• Netgear WNDR3700 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi are segregated

  I have a Netgear WNDR3700 with both the 2.4GHz (B/G/N) and 5GHz (A/N) broadcasting. I'd assumed that devices connecting on either channel would work together without issues, but there are some devices (such as my iPhone 4 or HP wireless printer) that will only connect at 2.4GHz, and some that connect at 5GHz. However, it seems that they're segregated on the network, so a computer at 5GHz can't print to the printer, but the iPhone can. This is causing issues not just with printing, but with AppleTV and so on. Is there a way to have the router let these devices all talk to each other?

• Is there a way to change the default animation speed in PowerPoint?

  I do a lot of PowerPoint (2007) presentations, and some of those involve some rather complex diagrams that I like to build step by step, using PowerPoint's animation feature. I prefer using the "fade in" style, but I find the default medium speed setting too low, so every time I'm adding an element to my animation, I have to go to the Speed dropdown box and select "Very fast". This is getting annoying, so I wonder if there is a way to tell PowerPoint that I'd like my standard animation speed (at least for fade-ins) to be "very fast"?

• Folder vs File Folder - Can I create a folder from the command line?

  If I create a shortcut to a folder and drag the shortcut onto the start menu, then the shortcut on the start menu behaves just like any other shortcut - click it to open the folder in explorer. However, if I drag the folder onto the start menu, then it expands in-situ. If I then copy this shortcut(?) into another location on my machine and compare it to other files/folders, its type appears as "Folder" as opposed to "File Folder" (which is what I get when I choose File-New-Folder. What's the difference between these two types of folder? Can I create one of these folders without dragging onto the start menu? Thanks

• Upgrade of Ubuntu 8.10 distribution fails due to missing packages

  I have a server that I've forgotten to upgrade for ages, which is still running Intrepid (8.10). I'd like to upgrade it to a newer version of the distribution, so that I can get security patches etc. I found some instructions that tell me to install the package update-manager-core. I tried the following: $ sudo apt-get install update-manager-core but this fails since some of the necessary packages can't be found: ... I know that Intrepid is no longer supported, and so I guess some of the necessary files may no longer be maintained. But this seems rather unhelpful: I can't upgrade because it's too old, and the only way to fix this would be to upgrade it. Is there a way round this? Is something else wrong?

• How to verify if my copy operation is complete in Windows 7?

  Yesterday, I was leaving some job of copying a directory to run overnight. This morning however, I found the computer had restarted because of Windows Update or something. I was wondering if there is some way to check if the copy is complete? One way I guess would be check the last modified time of the copy, and when the system restarted. But I was wondering where to find the time when the system restarted? I was also wondering if where to find some logging files that have the records. I know Event Viewer, but don't know where to find within it. Other methods are welcome too. I also would like to hear suggestions for other ways to accomplish the copy instead of just simple copy and paste. Thanks and regards!

• How can I delete Time Machine files using the commandline

  I want to delete some files/directories from my Time Machine Partition using rm, but am unable to do so. I'm pretty sure the problem is related to some sort of access control extended attributes on files in the backup, but do not know how to override/disable them in order to get rm to work. An example of the error I'm getting is: % sudo rm -rf Backups.backupdb/MacBook/Latest/MacBook/somedir rm: Backups.backupdb/MacBook/Latest/MacBook/somedir: Directory not empty rm: Backups.backupdb/MacBook/Latest/MacBook/somedir/somefile: Operation not permitted There are a number of reasons I do not want to use either the Time Machine GUI or Finder for this. If possible, I'd like to be able to maintain the extended protection for all other files (I'd like not to disable them globally, unless I can re-enable once I've done my work).

• Hyper-V R2 as a VM on another virtual OS

  I am trying to perform Microsoft Platform testing for a vendor application. The problem I have is that it requires the test be done on Windows Server 2008 as a VM on Hyper-V R2. Currently, I have access to a virtual server with just Hyper-V and also have access to an ESXi server. The crazy idea (which may just show how little I know about how virtualization technology works) is to install Hyper-V R2 as a VM onto one of these other servers. Then create a VM for Windows Server 2008 on this Hyper-V R2 VM. I can not just upgrade the current Hyper-V server as the VMs currently running would need to be taken off-line and are system critical (and I don't have rights to perform this upgrade). Has anyone tried this? Will this even work?

• Windows IPSec computer authentication using *user* account?

  For some reason every once in a while it happens that my IPSec authentication is from a user account to a computer account, not computer to computer. How can I fix it? Sometimes - notably when I try to add a new workstation through ePO but it's happened other times as well I'm getting strange behavior from my Windows Advanced Firewall IPSec. This causes the authentication to be invalid (as the group memberships, etc all assume computer accounts). I have no idea why this is happening or how to fix it but the IDs to match up between servers (the opposite server in my second example has remote ID timb).

• Resetting default Input Method in Mac OS 10.6

  I'm a Dvorak guy. I recently installed a new machine at the inlaws who are not Dvorak people. I stupidly selected Dvorak as my Input Method of choice while installing OS X. Now, all of the users I created default to Dvorak and need to go through the manual process of removing Dvorak as their Input Method of choice and instead choosing U.S. I have no idea how far reaching the implications might be. Could be that any time another user is added they will default to Dvorak. Right now, I'd like to set the default back to U.S. How can I do that? Behaviors I'm looking for include that when the Input Menu is not shown at the Login Screen, U.S. is the keyboard layout. Any future users created should default to U.S. with no Input Menu in the menu bar. Any users created already should have their default layout be U.S. Thanks in advance!

• Exchange 2007 automatically adding IP to block list

  This puzzled me. We have all mail directed to an ISP's spam filter, then delivered to SBS 2008 Exchange. One of the ISP's IP numbers suddenly appeared in the ES2007 block list, set to expire in 24 hours I think, so emails started bouncing. Quick look through the typically ponderous docs, and I can't see anything that says Exchange will auto-block an IP number, but nobody is admitting to adding it manually and I think it must have done. Anyone know about this or where it is configured? Obviously one could disable block lists completely but I'd like to know exactly why this happened.

• Reset my windows server 2003

  I was recently given an HP Proliant Server from a friend as a gift. It has Windows Server 2003 installed on it. When I go to boot the system however to log in to Windows Server 2003 it requires an Admin password. I can't figure out the password and my friend doesn't know it either as it has been years since hes used the machine. I don't care about any of the data on the machine I just want to have a new clean version of Windows server 2003 running on it. Any advice would be helpful?   I need a way to pass a given variable - lets say thearch - to several different files within a given class. I need to be able to state the contents of this variable for each file individually. I have tried the following: file { "xxx": thearch => "i386", path => "/xxx/yyyy", owner => root, group => root, mode => 644, content => template("module/test.erb"), } This doesn't pass this variable so I can use it with a <%=thearch% statement within the erb file as I expect. • Change ISP and MX static ip but no mail

  We have recently changed our ISP, I have changed the MX record for our domain name to point to the new external static IP address for the router on the new ISP's connexion but I am not getting any mail (though sending works). Do I just have to wait will the change propagates? I am slightly concerned because I can connect to the web email service made visible through the new router, but not actually receive email. Have I missed something?

• How do I block a single css file from being loaded with firefox or chrome?

  I want to be able to block one css file from loading on my system. The site has multiple sheets that I do want to load but it has one hideous theme.css file that I just have to get rid of. I would prefer to use Chrome but FF is ok too. A system wide ban on the file would be ideal. I want to specify a single url that the computer becomes incapable of fetching it. I will then use stylish to create my own replacement. BTW its a SharePoint theme and it has way too many rules to have to override. Thanks

• pine sometimes not update new received emails

  Hi, I am using pine on a KUbuntu linux email server to check my emails. Most of the time when I am under "Inbox", the list of emails is updated automatically so I don't have to do things like pushing the refresh button when I am under web. But sometimes it does not and I have to type "<" to go to the upper level and then select "Inbox" to enter again into the inbox directory to find out that I do receive new emails that are not shown previously.   If there are two physically separate hard drives, should they be treated as two pre-defined partitions? If yes: should they be treated as two primary partitions (including one or two of them can become extended partition(s) and be further subdivided into logical partitions)? Or they (or one part of each) can be treated as two logical partitions of a extended partition? Thanks! I intended to ask if there can be a primary/logical partition that are partially on both hard drives? And if there can be a logical partition on a hard drive and another logical partition on another hard, and the two logical partitions belong to the same extended partition? I guess the answers to both questions are no?
